5 Android Apps You Shouldn’T Miss This Week
Price: $32.99
Disgaea 1 Complete is a mobile port of the classic strategy RPG game from 2003. It is the complete game as the name implies. For the uninitiated, Disgaea is a strategy RPG similar in mechanics to Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem. You get some characters, play through the story, and enjoy the game in all of its glory. Additionally, the mobile version adds an auto-battle system for easier level grinding, cloud saves, battle speed boosts, and a cheat shop for extra EXP and HL. The price is outrageously expensive, but keep an eye on it to see if it ever goes on sale.
Microsoft Launcher PreviewPrice: Free
Microsoft is doing a lot of new stuff with its launcher these days. In fact, they are re-building the entire app from scratch. This new iteration has a bunch of new features such as a legitimate landscape mode, a dark mode, and a bunch of performance tweaks from the original. It is a preview and there are some bugs. However, this should easily usurp the old Microsoft Launcher as long as the improvements keep coming. Plus, the new version looks pretty nice as well. Check out our hands-on impressions here!
Might & Magic: Chess RoyalePrice: Free to play
Might & Magic: Chess Royale is an auto-battler with 100-player matches. It’s actually a fairly basic game right now. There is one game mode where you go in and do auto chess style combat against all those other people. However, matches tend to go rather quickly and the loading times are pretty good. You get the usual array of auto chess elements as well. Some people aren’t fans of the game’s singular game mode and there are a few connection issues for some folks. It’s not the best it can be right now, but it should improve over time.
BytePrice: Free
Byte is the literal successor to Vine. The app appeared on the Play Store late last week and people are already talking about it. It works very much like Vine used to. You upload 6-second clips and re-watch them over and over again. It’s set up to be a nostalgia trip back down memory lane for previous Vine users. However, the developers are open to where the app could go. It’s a little basic right now but we expect improvements, additions, and things like better categorization as time goes. Here’s hoping this one is a bit more successful but it has to compete with TikTok and that’s a steep hill to climb. Here’s how to install the app if it’s not available on Google Play for you.
Realm of AltersPrice: Free to play
Realm of Alters is a deck-building duel game similar in its basic premise to games like Hearthstone. Players collect cards, build decks, and duel other players in online PvP matches. Unfortunately, the game launched on the Play Store, but the servers hadn’t launched as of the time of this writing. Thus, I was unable to really test this one out. However, based on context, it’ll likely be similar to most card dueling games where you summon cards gacha-style and obtain free stuff for logging in every day. It should be relatively decent when the servers go live.
What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You
Unauthorized wireless devices can expose your organization’s confidential data and critical assets to the outside world. Left connected, these devices create a dangerous vulnerability at best, and at worst, a company disaster. Despite the widespread understanding that rogue devices are a leading security threat facing enterprises today, organizations continue to look for viable solutions and best practices for scouring the entire network to ensure that only approved devices are connected.
There are solutions available to root out unauthorized access points and other devices acting as access points, known as rogue peers. However, enterprises and government organizations should look for solutions that find and eliminate rogue devices while also being easy to deploy and manage – and cost-effective. A new approach that should be considered is wired side scanning using a security appliance, which can be a highly effective, lower cost solution to protect the entire network.
The Rogue Wireless Device Problem
As enterprise networks expand and more and more devices are introduced, it is critical to quickly discover and eliminate network infrastructure that poses a significant risk to the organization. The emergence of wireless networking has created a host of new threats that must be addressed under the umbrella of wireless vulnerability management. In particular, unauthorized devices connected to the wired network can pose the most acute risk.
Rogue wireless devices can be broken down into two broad categories: access point (AP) based threats and computer based threats.
Rogue Access Points
A rogue access point is an AP which is connected to the LAN without the blessing of a network administrator. Most commonly, rogue APs are added to the network by employees or contractors who want to improve their own productivity by being able to work wirelessly.
Rogue Peers
A rogue peer is an end-user computer—usually a laptop—that has both bridging and wireless enabled. Since the basic functions of an access point are bridging and wireless access, any laptop that has these capabilities presents a similar vulnerability or worse. In fact, the vulnerability with a rogue peer can be much more severe than with a rogue AP, because laptops provide almost no security features to prevent connections from other unauthorized users.
In addition to the problems of network access provided by rogue APs or rogue peers, there are also security concerns about other unauthorized networked devices. For example, a Web camera connected to the LAN could be used by an attacker to eavesdrop on confidential meetings. It may have been installed by a well-meaning employee, but it’s actually sharing your trade secrets.
Depending on your organization’s security policy, different devices may be considered security risks. In some organizations, even the act of connecting an unauthorized printer to the network is considered a serious vulnerability.
Discovering Everything on the LAN
The first step to being able to find unauthorized devices on the LAN is to find everything. The second step is to quickly hone in on the devices which meet the criteria of being a threat. With the network appliance scanning approach, a combination of passive and active techniques are used for discovering devices, because both techniques are needed to discover all of the devices. Passive techniques place the least load on the network and also help the system discover the network topology, but some devices may not communicate very frequently. Active techniques work quickly and are less dependent on the network topology.
Classification
Accurate classification is critical for any system responsible for discovering and identifying network infrastructure. Determining what a networked device is, based upon only what can be observed from the network, is very much like recognizing your friends from their silhouettes—the one with the long nose or protruding forehead is easy to recognize, but the others all look very similar. Solutions using the new wired side scanning approach collect as much information about each device as possible using the discovery techniques already mentioned. Once the basic device mapping is complete, additional probing is used for classification. The system then combines the information and matches the data against known device signatures to determine which one matches the best.
With over 300 different manufacturers of access points and tens of thousands of different models of network equipment, the major challenge for device classification has been in creating a database of fingerprints for all of these devices. Typically, the approach has been to acquire one of each device that needs to be fingerprinted and probe it in a laboratory. This technique simply can’t scale beyond hundreds of devices. Furthermore, it is limited to devices which can be easily purchased and acquired, which ignores devices that are no longer on the market, are only sold in foreign markets, or are relatively rare.
New collaborative classification techniques are now leveraged for building the classification database. This process leverages the collaboration of network administrators and networks.
Remediation
The new wired side solution approach mitigates rogue wireless devices through the technique of Ethernet port disabling. Enterprises can leverage configuration capabilities for auto-blocking a particular device type. Whether automatic or manual, the product will block the switch port for the rogue wireless device.
Summary
Unauthorized wireless devices connected to the network continue to be the number one wireless security risk that network administrators need to address. With new wired side scanning solutions that can find, classify and remove rogue devices, it is now possible to scan an entire network to accurately find and remediate these threats. This protects organizations from wireless threats, whether they have implemented a wireless infrastructure or need to enforce a “no wireless” policy. And while the bane of classification systems has been their inability to properly identify devices and differentiate actual threats from authorized devices, the use of new classification techniques can finally solve this problem.

Serp 101: All That You Want To Know
What Is SERP in SEO?
SERP is short for Search Engine Result Page. It is the list of sites search engines display on their result page when someone enters a query.
When someone enters a query in a Search Engine, its algorithm cross-references the keyword and the information with the indexed pages. Then it displays a list of results with a link to the website.
A website is ranked no.1 if the contents on the page match precisely with the user’s query. The position a link gets is called SERP ranking.
In the old days, SERP had only ten hyperlinks with blue-colored titles. It used to comprise the link, Meta title, and Meta description. However, things have changed significantly over the years. Now, it comes with a wide range of features. This includes images, reviews, graphs, text excerpts, links, news, etc.
How Does SERP Ranking Work?Search engines, mainly Google, use 100s of ranking factors to decide the SERP ranking. It does not reveal all the elements. However, industry experts over the year have worked and have been working to uncover the secrets.
After several testing and trial and error, SEO experts figure out some crucial factors. These include −
The uniqueness of the contents
Quality and reliability of the contents
Keyword optimization
Relevancy of the query to the website’s content
The page must be indexed by Google
High and authoritative backlinks
Dwell time and bounce rate
Meta tags
Information Architecture
Navigation of the site
Page loading speed
Mobile-friendliness of the site
Google has confirmed most of these in their official documentation about SEO. The Google algorithm documentation also includes some essential information on the implementation process.
On top of that, Google also has provided tools such as Search Console and Google Analytics. These tools allow site owners to check their rank in the SERP.
What Results are Displayed in the SERP?The SERPs of every search engine and user are different. One user may get a different response from Search Engines on the same query. The results are usually generated based on the user’s browsing history, location, device, interests, and other information.
Besides the difference, all SERPs display two common results −
Organic ResultsOrganic results in SERPs are natural search results. These are the results that google displays naturally without charging any fee from the site owner.
Assuming your contents have all the information the users are looking for. In such events, Google will likely reward your efforts by boosting your page on the SERP.
Organic search results are based on three main categories: relevance, authority, and discoverable.
Relevance − The content on your page is relevant to the target keywords or query searched by the user.
Authority − You have higher page authority in your niche. When someone has high page authority, they are considered an expert in the subject.
Discoverable − Your site should be created so that search engines easily index it.
All these factors play a crucial role in ranking a page organically in SERP.
Paid ResultsBusinesses or organizations pay a specific price for specific keywords or phrases. When users search that keyword in google, they see the paid sites on the top. The paid results come “sponsored” written on top of them.
Usually, google display three paid results on each page. The organic results start just below the paid results.
Features displayed on Google SERPThe features you will see in Google SERP −
Featured SnippetsFeatured snippets are small information located at the top of the search results. The contents displayed as featured snippets usually come from the page that ranks higher for a keyword. A page appearing on featured snippets is referred to as rank 0. It is the highest rank one can get on organic search results.
Featured snippets often appear in the form of −
List of items
Paragraph of text
Table
Video
It depends entirely on the type of search query. For instance, if you search “top 10 songs of lady gaga”, the featured snippet will appear in a list of songs by the pop icon.
Similarly, if you search “what are organic results?” the featured snippet will display a paragraph containing the answer.
It is still unclear how Google’s algorithm chooses a webpage for rank 0. However, SEO experts believe google prefers content that is −
Written and displayed with a proper format
Fully matches the user’s search intent and query or keywords
Image PackGoogle displays image packs on the search results page if the query is associated with some images. For example, when you search for cute puppy pics, cat pics, etc.
VideosGoogle displays videos on the SERP if the user query is relevant. For instance, if you search “Dalgona coffee,” google will display videos about preparing coffee at home.
Local PackLocal packs are information extracted from Google My Business profiles. They are usually geographical. Such as a search with “near me” followed by a map and the top three results.
Knowledge PanelThe knowledge panel displays organized information about a person, business, brand, and other entity and things in the search query. If you search for “Bill gates, Google will pull the data from verified sources and display them on the top right side of the SERP.
Knowledge CardA knowledge card is located at the top of the search results, right below the search bar. The results are retrieved from verified and reputable sources like Google’s index from reliable sites, Wikipedia, government sites, etc. They cover topics like a celebrity’s birthday, stock information, formulas, currency exchange rates, etc.
SitelinksSitelinks appear as a big box containing several additional links to a website or brand. If you search “youtube,” google will display the homepage as the top result. Along with that, it will display sublinks like youtube music, videos, upload, subscriptions, movies, tv shows, etc.
ReviewsGoogle shows user reviews when you search for a movie, book, restaurant, etc. The reviews are located at the bottom right end of the search results.
News Results and Top Stories Shopping ResultsShopping results are paid results displayed on the SERP. When you search for a product such as “iPhone 14 pro max,” it will display a rich snippet containing the image and details of the product. The details include the product name, retailer, review stars, price, any ongoing offers, etc.
Google: You Don’t Need To Be An Authority To Rank
Not all websites need to be seen as authorities in order to rank well in search results, says Google’s Search Advocate John Mueller.
This is stated during the Google Search Central SEO office-hours hangout recorded on December 10.
Mueller said it’s hard to call a site authoritative after publishing 30 articles on a particular subject.
With that being the case, Harnish asks how Google views single page websites.
Read Mueller’s full response in the section below.
Google’s John Mueller On Website AuthorityAs far as single page websites go, Mueller says it’s possible to make good ones.
For example, a website can’t just publish 30 articles about a medical condition and be viewed as having the same authority as a doctor.
Mueller states:
“I think you can make good one-page sites. So from that point of view I’m not too worried about that.
I think the Reddit post, as far as I remember, was something along the lines: ‘I created 30 blog posts, and they’re really good, and therefore my website should be authoritative.’
And from my point of view, you going off and creating 30 blog posts does not automatically make your website authoritative.
Most sites don’t need to concern themselves with being an authority. They can still put content out there and have it rank in search results.
Mueller gives the example of a small business selling a product or service. The business doesn’t need to be the foremost authority in its field in order for customers to find its products.
“And for a lot of websites, it’s not that you need to be seen as an authority. You essentially put your content out there. If you’re a small business you’re selling something. You don’t need to be an authority.
And especially things where like one page websites they’re often very focused on this one thing and you don’t need to be an authority to do that one thing.
To sell, I don’t know, an ebook, or to give information about opening hours for a business. It’s like, it’s just information.
So from that point of view, having a one page website, I think it’s perfectly fine.”
Mueller goes on to say that a one-page website is a good starting point, but it can always grow from there.
Consider how more pages can be added to the site in the future so it doesn’t get stuck in a place where new content keeps getting added to the single page.
“With regards to starting out with a one-page website, I think that’s fine, but I would think about where do you want to go from there at some point.
Maybe you do want to create more pages and try to find a way that you don’t paint yourself into a corner by saying, well, I have to put everything on one page all the time. But rather expand when you see that it fits.”

You Might Want To Wait Before Updating Some Devices To Ios 7
Our recommendations are divided into two groups: devices that should wait to update until some issues have been resolved, and devices that should think twice before updating because the current 7.0 experience isn’t optimal.
You should wait to install iOS 7 on these iPad modelsWe do not yet* recommend updating to iOS 7 on the following devices:
iPad 2 – wait, buggy and slow user experience
iPad 3 – wait, buggy and slow user experience
Put simply, iOS 7 on the iPad doesn’t feel entirely ready yet, but it’s worse on these two older models and they wind up experiencing a combination of annoyances; general bugginess plus sluggish overall performance. The bugginess may be tolerable to many (if you don’t mind some apps randomly quitting or becoming unresponsive), but the performance degradation and sluggishness is frustrating enough to just say forget it for the 7.0 build. Tasks that are as simple as typing have an awkward lag to them, changing the wallpaper can take 15-25 seconds and render the entire device useless in the process. Even bringing up Spotlight or rotating the iPad from landscape into portrait mode wind up as exercises in patience. Basically, the iOS 7.0 GM build still feels like a beta on these devices, and the experience will probably not be what you are accustomed to with a speedy and stable iOS 6 release.
* The performance issues, speed degradation, and stability problems may be resolved by a future minor iOS update, perhaps iOS 7.0.1 or iOS 7.1. We highly recommend waiting until then. Updates versioned as iOS 7.0.1, 7.0.2, and 7.1 are actively being worked on by Apple, according to logs studied by MacRumors and 9to5mac, thus we may see releases of those updates sooner than later.
Think twice before updating these devices to the first 7.0 releaseWe suggest thinking twice about updating these devices because the experience isn’t entirely optimized yet:
iPad 4 – reconsider or wait before updating, buggy experience
iPad Mini – reconsider or wait before updating, buggy experience
iPhone 4 – reconsider or wait, iOS 7 is sometimes more sluggish on iPhone 4 than iOS 6
As mentioned already, the iOS 7.0 GM build still feels like a beta in many ways. To non-developers, that basically means the experience can sometimes be buggy, with apps crashing and freezing up for no obvious reason. Simple tasks can bring frustrations, and typing on the keyboard can be randomly and inexplicably lagged with a delay before characters appear. To get the device to become responsive again, sometimes you’ll have to force quit an app or even hard reboot the entire device. These kind of quirks do not happen all the time, but it’s often enough to be potentially frustrating if you are accustomed to the stability of iOS 6. Waiting a week or two for a minor bug fix update may alleviate many of these frustrations. At the very least, know what you’re getting into before installing iOS 7.0 on any iPad model, and don’t expect it to be a perfectly fluid user experience quite yet.
Finally, the iPhone 4 is also on our ‘reconsider’ list for a more simple reason; it’s often just a bit slower running iOS 7 than it is running iOS 6. That’s probably due to some of the new transparencies, transitions, eye-candy effects, and background app functionality that have been introduced in iOS 7, and it may be resolvable through adjusting user settings or a 7.0.1 type of update. If you’re happy with how your iPhone 4 is now, holding off on the initial 7.0 update may provide you with a better experience.
–
This is a recommendation based upon experience with the iOS 7.0 GM build. You don’t need to agree with this opinion, and remember that Apple supports iOS 7 on all the devices we mentioned here. At the very least, take the time to properly prepare and back up your iOS stuff before jumping ahead.
