The “Wi-Fi doesn’t have a valid IP configuration” error mostly happens due to driver issues, misalignment of routers and PC IP addresses, or DNS problems. This error is inconvenient, as it prevents you from connecting to the wireless network. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to fix the Wi-Fi connection issue without formatting your PC. Let’s take a look at the potential solutions.

1. Restart PC and Router

Begin the troubleshooting journey by rebooting your computer and router. To reboot the router, unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in again. Sometimes such a simple solution can resolve the error.

2. Run Windows Troubleshooter

Next, try running the Windows Troubleshooter to detect and fix the issue.

1. Use the Win + X keyboard shortcut to open “Settings” on your Windows PC.

2. Go to “Network & Internet.”

4. Wait for the troubleshooter to identify the issue and offer a solution.

3. Temporarily Disable Your Antivirus

Many Windows 10 folks recommend turning off Antivirus services, as it may prompt Windows to assign a valid IP. Whether you are using Windows Defender or a third-party antivirus program, consider turning it off followed by restarting your computer to resolve the issue.

4. Reset TCP/IP Stack

One of the most recommended solutions for the “Wi-Fi doesn’t have a valid IP configuration” error is to reset the TCP/IP stack on your PC. Here are the steps to reset it:

1. Press Win + X and type “CMD” or “Command Prompt” in the search bar.

3. In the Command Prompt window, type

netsh winsock reset catalog

and hit Enter. Wait for the command to run.

4. Next, run the command:

netsh int ip reset

5. Close the Command Prompt window and restart your PC.

5. Renew IP Lease and Flush DNS Cache

If the commands above don’t work to provide you with a valid IP, try flushing the DNS cache with the commands listed here.

For starters, you can decide whether you want your Android device to bug you about available public Wi-Fi networks, and you can view—or forget—any Wi-Fi network you’ve previously saved for automatic connection. You can also decide whether your phone’s Wi-Fi radio stays on when your Android device is asleep, or put data caps on any metered Wi-Fi networks that you regularly use.

”Forget” a saved Wi-Fi network

Now that you’re looking at a list of all your saved Wi-Fi networks, you might see a few that you’d rather not connect to again—for example, one of those sketchy (and usually unreliable) public Wi-Fi hotspots that always seem to be floating around in malls, cafes and other public spaces.

Tap the “Forget” button to keep your Android handset from automatically connecting to a specific Wi-Fi hotspot.

To cross any off your list, just tap it and then tap the Forget button. When you do, the network will disappear from your Saved list and your Android handset will no longer connect to it automatically.

You can, of course, reconnect manually to a “forgotten” Wi-Fi network, but you’ll have to type in the network’s password again (assuming the network is password-protected) to do so.

Keep your Android device from bugging you about available Wi-Fi networks

By default, your non Wi-Fi-connected Android device will pop up an alert whenever it detects available Wi-Fi hotspots in the vicinity.

Keep Wi-Fi on when your Android device is asleep

In general, it’s best to stick with “Always” when it comes to Android’s “Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep” setting.

While turning Wi-Fi off when you Android phone or tablet is asleep may sound like a tempting power-saving option, doing so has its downsides.

For example, turning off your device’s Wi-Fi radio doesn’t stop your handset from consuming data. Indeed, any apps running in the background may simply start gobbling up cellular data if your Wi-Fi is turned off, and if the cellular connection is spotty, your device might actually consume more power over cellular than over a solid Wi-Fi connection.

Stick with one frequency band

If you’ve got an Android device that supports Wi-Fi over the speedy 5GHz frequency band, there’s a way to make sure all your Wi-Fi connections are 5GHz all the time. Ben Patterson

If you wish, you can force your Android device to connect to Wi-Fi hotspots using the speedier 5 GHz frequency band.

Now, pick a band: either 2.4GHz (slower, but longer range) or 5GHz (faster, but shorter range).

The next time your device joins a Wi-Fi network, it’ll be using the frequency band you specified. You can check by tapping the network you’re connected to under the Wi-Fi list and looking at the Frequency setting.

One thing to keep in mind: Not all Wi-Fi hotspots support the 5GHz frequency band, so don’t see surprised if you see far fewer available Wi-Fi networks if you choose the 5GHz setting.

Note: Still not connected at the right frequency? Try “forgetting” the network you’re connected to and reconnecting. 

Set a Wi-Fi network as a “metered” network

If you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network with a data cap (either because your Android device is tethered to a mobile hotspot, or you’ve got a stingy ISP when it comes to data), you’ll want to be careful that your handset doesn’t gobble up massive chunks of data by downloading big system updates or allowing apps to chew up data in the background.

How To Fix “Your Wi

Nearly everyone alive today knows that password-protecting your network is best practice. You don’t want just anyone having access to your network, whether it’s your neighbor just looking for free Internet or a malicious hacker looking to steal your information. You don’t want to get a visit from the police just because someone else used your network for nefarious purposes!

Passwords are not the only protection your network needs. It also needs strong encryption so that no one can intercept the data.

Wi-Fi Encryption Protocols

There are different methods of encryption that are used to protect Wi-Fi networks: WEP, WPA, and WPA2. The Wi-Fi Alliance has just begun certifying new products using the new WPA3 technology. Each new protocol improved on the security of the previous one, making your network safer.

However, the older versions are still available and, unfortunately, still widely used. WEP has never been a good option for encryption, even when it was first released. The Wi-Fi Alliance retired this method of encryption in 2004. A year later, the FBI demonstrated how easily hackers could crack WEP encryption by exploiting its many flaws.

The Wi-Fi Alliance planned to replace WEP with WPA-TKIP, but that protocol works in very similar ways as the original one. They have many of the same vulnerabilities. If you can crack one, you can usually crack the other.

Windows’ “Wi-Fi Isn’t Secure” Warning

Windows has recently added a warning when you try to connect to a network that is protected by one of these older encryption protocols. This message is for your safety and as a warning, especially if you are running Windows 10, that you will soon be unable to connect to these less secure protocols.

This warning states:

[Network Name] isn’t secure.

This Wi-Fi uses an older security standard that’s being phased out. We recommend connecting to a different network.

This message lets you know that you are trying to connect to a network that is still using WEP or WPA-TKIP encryption.

How to Fix the Issue

If you see this message when trying to connect to your home network, you should be able to fix the problem by enabling a stronger, more recent method of encryption.

Each router has a different method for changing these protocols, so you may have to check the manufacturer’s website to find the exact location of this option.

1. Either type your router’s IP address into the address bar of your browser, or if you have a Netgear router, you can type chúng tôi to access the router.

2. Log in to your router with your username and password. If you don’t have a password set, check the router manufacturer’s site for the default.

No matter what you need to do to stop using these outdated protocols, you should do so quickly. Not only are they easy to hack into, but it will also soon be impossible to use them on your Windows devices.

Restore Galaxy Note 10.1 Wi

In the world of custom ROM flashing, it’s often needed to revert back to a stock firmware on your device, for many reasons including wanting to recover the device from a bad custom ROM flash or simply returning to stock from a custom ROM which you don’t like. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is sure to receive a lot of attention in the custom ROM development world, which is where this guide comes in.

This guide will help you restore your Galaxy Note 10.1 Wi-Fi variant (N8010) to the stock N8010XXALGC (or simply XXALGC) Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0.4 firmware. Flashing this firmware will not affect your device’s warranty nor will it increase the dreaded flash counter nor show the yellow triangle when booting up the device, so it is perfectly safe to flash and will get your device back to stock.

This firmware and the guide below are compatible only and only with Galaxy Note 10.1 Wi-Fi variant, model number N8010. It’s not compatible with any other device. Check your device’s model number in: Settings » About tablet.

How to Install N8010XXALGC Firmware on Galaxy Note 10.1 Wi-Fi (N8010)

Extract the file to obtain a file named N8010XXALGC_N8010PAPALG5_HOME.tar.md5 (the file name may end at .tar, which is normal as the .md5 extension may be hidden).

Extract the contents of the Odin file to a folder.

Disconnect your tablet if it’s connected to PC, then switch it off.

Then, turn off the tablet. Then boot into download mode (odin mode) on the tablet by holding down Power and Volume Down buttons (volume down is the button next to the power button) together till you get a Warning!! screen. Here, press Volume Up to continue to enter download mode.

If you don’t get this message, then probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve proper drivers installed (check step 2). Also, uninstall Kies from the Control Panel as well if you have it installed.

What to do if Odin gets stuck: If ODIN gets stuck and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, or you get a FAIL message (with red background) in ODIN, disconnect the tablet from the PC, close ODIN, press and hold the Volume Down + Power buttons till the tablet reboots and shows you the Warning!! screen, then press Volume Up to enter download mode again, then repeat the procedure from step 9.

[Important] After you get the PASS message and the tablet reboots, the tablet might get stuck at the booting animation/Samsung logo. If that happens, perform the following steps to make it boot. Remember that these steps will wipe your personal data like contacts, apps, messages, etc. If your tablet has already booted, skip these steps, the flash has been successful:

Boot to recovery mode — for which, press and hold down Power andVolume Up buttons together till the device reboots. When the screen turns on, let go of the power button but keep holding down the volume up button till the device boots into recovery.. Once you are in recovery mode, use volume keys to move the selection up and down and power key to select the option.

Go to Wipe data/Factory Reset and select it. Select Yes on next screen.

Then, select reboot system now to reboot the tablet, which will now boot properly.

You might have considered switching broadband providers, but this may cost you more and there are no guarantees of a faster connection. A Wi-Fi extender or mesh Wi-Fi system might help, or you could move close enough to the router for a more rapid wired connection.

But there’s another potential solution that’s much easier. Most routers have what’s known as ‘dual-band’ Wi-Fi, meaning it broadcasts two separate Wi-Fi networks at the same time.

2.4GHz is usually the default, as it provides decent speeds over a longer distance. However, if you’re dissatisfied with your current connection, it’s worth considering a switch to 5GHz. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi?

Essentially, it comes down to reliability vs speed.

2.4GHz can pass through walls and floors much more easily, making it a more reliable option for all rooms of the house. 

However, if you’re near the router or have few obstacles, switching to 5GHz is likely to lead to a much faster connection. 

Does my router have 5GHz Wi-Fi?

Unless you already know for sure that your router is a dual-band model and definitely has a 5GHz radio, it’s worth checking that out first. There’s no point enabling 5GHz Wi-Fi on your laptop if your router doesn’t support it.

The easiest way to do that is to check its specifications online, look in the manual, or log in to the router itself and check the settings available in the Wi-Fi section.

When you have separate networks, you can rename them (with 5GHz at the end of the 5GHz one, say) so you can easily identify each network from your laptop, phone or tablet and know which one you’re connected to.

If your router doesn’t support it, almost all of the best routers do.

Does my laptop support 5GHz Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi specs aren’t the first thing you think about when buying a new laptop, and manufacturers don’t always quote them.

But if you already have a Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop, it’s easy to find out, and the method is the same on both.

Using the search bar next to the Start menu, search for and open the Device Manager

Expand the ‘Network adapters’ section

Find the make and model of your laptop’s Wi-Fi – either ‘Wi-Fi’ or ‘Wireless Network’ is usually mentioned in its name

Search for its specific name online

This laptop, for example, has a Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 adaptor. Searching online for this make and model brings up plenty of results for its specifications which show that it works only on 2.4GHz. If your adapter supports Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), it will definitely support 5GHz. In most cases, 802.11n adapters will also support 5GHz.

You can also check directly from Device Manager:

Select the ‘Advanced’ tab, then look for the ‘Property’ list

If it supports 5GHz, you should see it mentioned here. If not (as is the case in the example below), either your adapter doesn’t support it or the wrong drivers are installed

But even if it’s bad news, there’s an easy fix. You can add 5GHz Wi-Fi to any laptop which doesn’t have it by adding a dongle. These are relatively cheap, and there are plenty of great options.
