Suggested January 2024 2023 Apple Watch Could Sport A Sleep Monitor

For all its integrated fitness and health-tracking features, Apple Watch is unable to measure your sleep out of the box. That could change next year, according to a new report Tuesday.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is reporting that Apple is currently testing a sleep monitor for a future version of Apple Watch.

The company has been using the sleep-tracking feature for several months with testers at secret sites around its Cupertino, California, headquarters.

If the functionality is successful in the testing stages, the company plans to add it to the Apple Watch by 2023, according to people familiar with the work.

The report doesn’t make it clear if Apple’s implementation of “a sleep monitor” may require new sensors or if this is something that could be brought to older models via a firmware update.

The Health app already sports sections dedicated to sleep analysis.

There are many third-party watchOS apps on App Store focused on providing sleep analysis based on data from the device’s onboard sensors.

The vast majority of these apps write data to the Health app.

From the onset, the Health app has included a section for sleep analysis data. Aside from third-party apps, the Health app can also pull in sleep-related information from third-party sleep monitors and the alarm clock function in iOS’s Clock app (hours slept data).

The Clock app sports basic sleep-tracking with hours slept data written to the Health app.

There’s just one problem: battery strain.

Here we go again, comparing battery life of fitness trackers to that of a general-purpose smartwatch like Apple Watch that does so much more than track workouts.

Some options may include Apple increasing the Watch’s battery life or creating a way to run sleep tracking overnight as part of a low-power mode. It could also just require a battery charge in the morning.

So I’ve been using apps like Sleep++ and AutoSleep for years now to measure the duration and quality of my sleep. Yes, doing so means I’m usually not waking up to a fully charged device as I would have had I left my watch on the charger overnight.

No, this isn’t a biggie for me—far form it. There are worse things in life than waking up to a half-charged watch. Besides, I just leave my watch charging when I’m doing my morning routine. By the time I’m done and ready to pop out, I’m usually near 100 percent charge.

That’s good enough for me.

AutoSleep is one of the best apps for tracking your sleep.

There are no technical reasons against bringing sleep analysis to older watches with a software update. Apple being Apple, it could choose to limit such a feature to 2023 devices to boost sales. Another reason could be avoiding dealing with customers who might complain about their watch’s battery losing its charge due to a battery-sucking feature like sleep tracking.

TUTORIAL: How to track your sleep with AutoSleep

Then again, many people who do track their sleep with third-party apps are not complaining about any battery issues, and Apple certainly isn’t denying service to those people just because they happen to be using a battery hog sleep-tracking app.

38Mm Apple Watch Sport Component Costs Estimated To Begin At $81.20

Based on the initial Apple Watch teardown analysis conducted by hardware experts at iFixit, Chipworks and ABI, research firm IHS Technology has now estimated the cost of components — so-called bill of material — that go into building each 38mm aluminum Apple Watch Sport at $81.20.

For clarity, Apple CEO Tim Cook said on an earnings call earlier this week that component cost breakdowns around Apple products are inaccurate and “much different than the reality.”

Rather unsurprisingly, the priciest individual component is LG’s plastic OLED display and TPK’s Slim GG touchscreen overlay module with Force Touch feedback. With a combined cost of $20.50 per unit, this module accounts for more than one-quarter of the device’s estimated bill of material of $81.20 per unit.

Then come the enclosure, wristbands, physical buttons and the printed circuit board with a combined cost pegged at $16.50.

The third priciest component is an Apple-designed system-in-package processor: running at an estimated $10.20 a pop, the S1 chip is encapsulated in resin and integrates an entire computer architecture onto a single chip.

The encapsulation of the S1 impressed IHS experts.

Apple has basically encased the entire printed circuit board in the same plastic/epoxy material used for conventional integrated circuits (IC). As a bonus, “many of the devices found inside the assembly are already encapsulated, effectively creating an IC-within-an-IC affair,” according to Keller.

To provide electromagnetic shielding, the encapsulated printed circuit board assembly is further treated with a metalized coating deposited over the surface.

“This shielding process is used in place of conventional stamped sheet metal shielding, saving a significant amount of space, as well as cutting down slightly on weight,” he said.

If accurate, IHS’s estimates suggest that the Apple Watch Sport hardware costs only about 24 percent of its retail price, the lowest hardware-costs-to-retail-price ratio of any Apple product examined by IHS. For guidance, IHS typically sees this ratio in the range of 29 to 98 percent for Apple products.

Here’s the full breakdown of the estimated component pricing.

IHS expects costs of Apple Watch components to decrease over time due to the economies of scale, especially after sales have started picking up steam and Apple’s supply chain has dealt with the yield issue.

“It is fairly typical for a first-generation product rollout to have a higher retail price versus hardware cost,” said Kevin Keller, senior principal analyst-materials and cost benchmarking services with IHS Technology.

“While retail prices always tend to decrease over time, the ratio for the Watch is lower than what we saw for the iPhone 6 Plus and other new Apple products, and could be of great benefit to Apple’s bottom line if sales match the interest the Watch’s generated.”

Another interesting tidbit: although Apple has not been announced as a member of the Wireless Power Consortium, which develops the Qi wireless charging specification, the MagSafe wireless charger that ships with the Watch could be Qi-compatible after all.

The veracity of the video couldn’t be established so it’s still unclear if the Moto 360 shown in the video uses a hardware modification to make it compatible with Apple’s MagSafe charger.

At the very least, one could speculate  — assuming the video is genuine and devices unmodified — that Apple is a silent partner of the WPC, in which case this could potentially be “another boost for the wireless charging industry looking to increase interoperability,” as IHS put it.

Lastly, IHS analysis has provided a glimpse into a possible second-generation Watch as the Taptic Engine (pictured below), which currently consumes a substantial amount of space inside the device, is bound to get miniaturized further.

It’s worth reiterating that IHS’s numbers are just estimates and should be taken with a few pinches of salt. Commenting on supply chain estimates, Tim Cook said this on the call earlier this week (emphasis mine):

In the first quarter with any new kind of product, you would always have learning and these sorts of things. And I haven’t even seen this, but generally, there’s cost breakdowns that come out around our products that are much different than the reality. I’ve never seen one that is anywhere close to being accurate.

Again, IHS’s figures exclude the bulk of other related costs incurred by high-volume gadget research, manufacture and sales — a major factor, especially as such a new-category product requires a steep learning curve from Apple’s vast network of suppliers.

Apple Watch Fall Detection Could Send Your Health Data To Emergency Services

Apple Watch Fall Detection has been credited with saving a number of lives, thanks to its ability to automatically call emergency services if it detects you falling and you don’t confirm that you’re ok.

But the feature could get even more sophisticated in future, with the ability to send comprehensive data to emergency services so they can get a sense of your condition before the ambulance arrives …

Patently Apple spotted the latest in a series of patents in which the Apple Watch builds on this capability, with the ability to send identification and health data as part of the audio message.

Apple goes further than this, and includes other identification and health data.

One aspect of the present technology is the gathering and use of data available from specific and legitimate sources to improve the ability of user devices to assist in emergency situations by making emergency calls on behalf of the user and providing valuable information to the recipients.

Apple contemplates that in some instances, this gathered data may include personal information data that uniquely identifies or can be used to identify a specific person. Such personal information data can include demographic data, location-based data, online identifiers, telephone numbers, email addresses, home addresses, data or records relating to a user’s health or level of fitness (e.g., vital signs measurements, medication information, exercise information), date of birth, or any other personal information.

Apple recognizes that the use of such personal information data, in the present technology, can be used to the benefit of users. For example, the personal information data (e.g., users health information, physical location, etc.) can be used to help emergency service responders and technicians to identify when a user needs medical attention and/or where the user is located. For example, information about previous health conditions of the user can help emergency services identify what type of medical attention is needed, and what type of technicians to send to the location of the user.

Health metrics that may be computed using the electrodes include, without limitation, heart functions (ECG, EKG), water content, body-fat ratios, galvanic skin resistance, and combinations thereof.

The Apple Watch doesn’t yet have sensors enabling it to gather all of this data, though we do expect additional sensors to be added over time. However, much of this data may already exist in the Health app. For example, if the casualty uses smart scales at home, the Health app may know things like their age, height, weight, BMI and body fat percentage.

This opens up the possibility of a very comprehensive automated briefing being given on 911 calls. For example, it might be something like this:

This is an automated emergency call on behalf of John Appleseed. John is a 38-year-old man who has had a hard fall, and is non-responsive. His current location is approximately 767 5th Ave, New York, NY 10153. John’s current heart-rate is 33 beats per minute. His normal resting heart rate is 42 beats per minute. John is five feet and 11 inches tall and weighs 168 pounds. His BMI is 23.5 and his body-fat is 22%, both within healthy ranges. He shows no sign of afib. John takes regular exercise, and the health data on his phone does not record any known medical conditions or medication. This message will repeat a further three times, with updated heart rate.

Best Cases For Apple Watch Ultra In 2023

The Apple Watch Ultra is the most rugged and feature-packed wearable made by Apple yet. And no doubt it can withstand a lot and does not really need a case to protect it, but my mind says otherwise. Apple is currently testing a built-on sleep timer feature in its Apple Music Android client, with a public release expected in a matter of few weeks.

The built-in feature allows you to gently fall asleep and wake up in the morning to your favorite playlist, artist, tune and so forth.

The feature appears to be pretty well thought out. You can set your timer in fixed increments or use one of the criteria for when the music should start or stop playing. Once you’ve set the timer, live countdown is display throughout the app. When the timer runs out, your preferred music will start or stop playing, which is great if you’d like to fall asleep or wake up in the morning to your favorite tune.

Live countdown persists through different selections in the app so you can always shut off the sleep timer with a quick flip of the switch. The built-in timer feature works with songs, albums, artists, playlists and radio stations. You can also set conditions for when the current song, album or playlist ends, 9to5Google reports.
