Suggested March 2024 5 Ways To Take Some Of The Distance Out Of Distance Learning

It’s important this year to keep connecting with students and fostering their engagement in learning.

Teachers understand the importance of physically being in the student space of the classroom. It’s essential for engaging students who are off track, for making specific points, and for energizing already on-task learners. But how can we connect with students when we’re separated by either a computer screen or the physical barriers we currently need to keep everyone safe in the classroom?

The following are five ideas we’ve tried this year with middle school and college students—they should also work with the high school students in between.

1.

Be Dramatic—Shout and Whisper

When we notice early sleepers still arising, students with pre-lunch cravings or post-lunch comas, or end-of-the-day clock watchers—in other words, students who are distracted for various reasons throughout the day—we find that, whether we’re teaching in person in a mask or virtually via Zoom, alternating between using a booming voice and a conspiratorial whisper draws students into the drama of our learning experiences.

It sounds simple, and that’s the point. We need simple ideas in complex times.

2. Focus on Connecting With Students

We have to engage our students, particularly those who are struggling, in just a few moments of conversation. The need is especially real for students who don’t normally participate in class or in online calls.

If you’re teaching virtually, take two minutes four times a week before or after a synchronous session to ask individual students about their weekend and their interests. The best time is usually right before or after class, but reaching out with a phone call works as well. Continuing to follow up with them a few times a week for a brief two-minute conversation is the key. The two minutes four times a week can also be one minute three times a week, or even one minute one time a week. You can do this with one or more students per week.

These are slimmed down versions of the Two by Ten approach, which has been shown to measurably improve student behavior. The point is that you are initiating a real connection with a student, and that can break down all types of walls.

3. Make Sure Everyone Speaks

Every member of the class should expect to speak in every class, and the norm should be that everyone contributes. Our classes are richest when all perspectives are included.

Cold calling is controversial, but it’s possible to take the sting out of cold calling and transform the downsides into a warm invitation to share thoughts. A wise teacher knows when to bring each student into a conversation through round robin questions that elicit a response from everyone or rapid questioning that allows many students to participate in a limited time frame.

There are many ways to ask questions that help students feel safe, such as using a tool like Mentimeter to make participation anonymous while ensuring that every student gives feedback.

Keep engaging students and let them feel the warmth of participation, and make sure the classroom is a place where it’s OK to be wrong because we come together to learn.

4. Really See Each Student

Students need to hear about the good work they’re doing—and they’re achieving a lot of amazing work this season.

General or generic praise, however, not only gives students a false sense of accomplishment but can also lead to praise becoming meaningless. Be specific with praise, and use this as another opportunity to break down that dividing wall.

5. SEL, Early and Often

Regularly attending to the social and emotional needs of students establishes a focus on well-being. In class, try to incorporate social and emotional learning activities, whether as a stand-alone, or, to really maximize the benefit, incorporated into a lesson plan.

In elementary through early middle school, give students words to describe their feelings using the framework of the Zones of Regulation. Older students can be given assignments that lead them to connect their learning to their community, such as asking family members, religious leaders, and other potential mentors about their experiences.

The point of all of these strategies is to engage and connect with students, no matter what the distance. If one of these ideas stands out to you, try it. And remember, we need to say no to some things so that we can say yes to the best things. To un-distance distance learning, make sure to first take care of yourself so that you can take care of those entrusted to you.

Distance Calculation On Map

In this tutorial, I’ll discuss distance calculation on map in Power BI based on forward stock location (FSL) and delivery point. This is just one of the various ways on how you can efficiently use distance calculation for geospatial analysis.

In this example, I’ll display and analyze customers within a radius from an existing forward stock location at a depot or a hub.

Let’s now discuss the dataset that I used for this instance of distance calculation. Here’s the data that contains the Customers data table.

It also contains the Forward Stock Locations table.

The Depots table has been appended to the Customers data table. This is to allow simultaneous display.

As you can see, there’s no connection between the two tables.

Furthermore, the DAX measures that I used are in three separate tables.

When modeling, I keep my measures at hand. Once my report is completed, the measure tables will be hidden.

I used three sets of measures to calculate and display the distance for this demonstration.

I transformed the distance calculation (Haversine formula) into a DAX measure (Distance measure). I’ve discussed the Haversine formula in an article about Distance And Bearing Calculation in Power BI (I’ll link this once it’s published).

This formula is slightly different from the Power Query function because I just made this as a workaround.

I used the Distance measure to calculate the distance based on a selection from the Select Distance slicer.

I used the Total Distance in the selection measure to calculate the total distance from the selection. Then, I displayed it on the table.

Moreover, I used the Distance in selection measure as a supporting measure for the Total Distance in selection measure.

The next set of measures contains the measures for the color, size, and title.

The first measure for this set is the FSL Point Color (Forward Stock Location Point Color).

This measure creates the green point in this smaller map.

It is used to zoom in on the selected location from the slicers.

Next is the Map Point Color measure.

The Map Point Color measure displays the green or blue color on the bigger map.

Additionally, I used the Size measure to display the customer’s bubbles and selected depots in different sizes on the map.

Last is the Map measure. I used this to create a dynamic title.

This dynamic title changes based on the selection from the Select Distance slicer.

The third measure table contains some standard calculations for Revenue and Demands. It also has measures that show the results of these calculations associated with the selected distance.

I created a Select Radius table with the distances from 0 to 250 km. I used a what-if parameter for this one.

That table is then used to create this special slicer with a slider.

After getting all the measures ready, I can now start building the report.

As a result, here’s the map with the points from the distance selection.

In this report, I can select a depot.

I can also change the distance on the Select Distance slicer. Then, I’ll be able to see the results in the table like the Revenue in selection, Demand in selection, and the Total Distance in Selection.

The smaller map zooms in on the selected location. This will move based on the selected depot.

These cards also show the results based on the selection from the Select Distance slicer.

In this tutorial, I didn’t focus on building the most attractive dashboard. It is merely for demonstrating one of the many ways to do distance calculation on the map in Power BI.

Hopefully, you were able to understand how to dynamically create visual reports in geospatial analysis where you need to analyze and display data based on a selected distance. Keep in mind that properly doing the measures and creating the dataset is essential for this to work.

5 Steps To Get The Most Out Of Ai In Search Advertising

Artificial intelligence, or AI, has been a top buzzword over the last year.

In fact, AI was even named the “Marketing Word of the Year” in 2023 by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA).

There are so many opinions and prognostications about the future of AI – with industry leaders and others weighing in – that it can be difficult to understand.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg recently shared his optimism over the rise of AI technologies like deep learning and how they could lead to breakthroughs in areas like healthcare and self-driving cars.

Space X founder Elon Musk contends that “AI is more dangerous than nuclear weapons.”

On the other hand, Bill Gates asserts that “Artificial intelligence is good for society.”

While the late Stephen Hawking declared that “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.”

What do we make of these statements?

Like many hot topics, AI is often described in hyperbolic extremes that can sound apocalyptic or utopian. But many applications of AI – and machine learning, which enables computers to learn from vast datasets – are practical.

AI in Search Advertising

In all, it is too much data and too complex for humans to make the optimal decisions manually. AI is uniquely suited to help humans make trade-offs to drive the best possible performance.

1. Set Clear Goals

AI is not taking over your job. It still needs humans to make strategic decisions and set business goals. It is important to take the time to set the right goals, which are unique to any business.

For some, optimizing to a cost per action (cost per sale, lead, registration) is best while others might want return on ad spend.

2. The More Data, the Better

The more data that AI has to learn from on a searcher’s intent, the better it can optimize campaigns.

Even if searchers for some keywords don’t convert, AI can leverage other data like actions on a website or audience data to optimize for performance.

Leveraging a marketer’s full data footprint – including site engagement and conversion metrics (time on site, number of pages viewed, registration, shopping cart status and product page visits, etc.), customer CRM data or data from a data management platform (DMP) – is key to maximizing performance.

3. Apply Expertise

Since AI works the best with few constraints, going overboard can be detrimental since the AI system will look for the optimal solution among a smaller set of possible values.

By focusing on setting the right goals as guardrails, marketers can then let the algorithm decide how to best achieve them.

4. Run Simulations

Simulations allow a marketer to do a low-effort test to see estimated impact without investing real dollars.

Before making big changes to campaign settings or budgets, simulations can help a marketer understand the impact on business goals – then, when ready, AI can take over on performance optimization.

5. Trust, but Verify

Regularly reviewing model accuracy reports offers much-needed peace of mind that AI forecasts and optimizations are working as expected.

With these best practices in mind, AI can do what it does best – and so can you.

5 Of The Best Screen

If you are having trouble with your computer or want to access files on it when you are not physically present, using screen sharing and remote-access software can be a real time saver.

Screen sharing and remote-access software allow one computer to access another and control the mouse and keyboard inputs while connected through an Internet or network connection.

This may conjure up images of malicious users having easy access to your device. However, screen sharing and remote-access programs use a high level of security so that only the people who are authorized have access. Some of the security features are password protection, encrypted data transmission, gated access, and blacklisting unwanted connections.

It’s easier than ever for you to access your computer or let others access it. There’s a large selection of excellent tools you can use, and some are even free. Here are some popular, well-tested options.

1. TeamViewer

For many good reasons, TeamViewer is one of the best-known remote desktop programs in the world. It supports a variety of platforms that you may want to use to access your PC, including iPhone and iPad. They have also recently added support for Samsung’s DeX technology. This allows you to use Samsung smartphones to access your computer.

TeamViewer supports 4K desktops, has a VPN alternative, and makes file sharing easy. Using this program you can also conduct web conferences and make online presentations.

This program integrates with popular software like SalesForce, Amazon Workspaces, Zendesk, ServiceNow, and Boss.

There is a free version for personal use that allows you to test the program before you commit to buying it for team use.

2. Chrome Remote Desktop

Chrome Remote Desktop is an easy to use solution for screen sharing and remote access. It installs as a Chrome browser extension, and you need a Google Account to use it. Start by creating a PIN so other PC users can log on to a secure connection in seconds. You can also permanently link two computers together if you often share access.

It supports multiple operating systems including Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebook by using the Chrome browser. Both users must be using Chrome for Chrome Remote Desktop to work.

There is no cost to use Chrome Remote Desktop, but it does have limited features, even when you compare it to other free remote desktop options.

3. Microsoft Remote Desktop

Microsoft Remote Desktop is a free program available through the Microsoft Store that uses the propriety Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) technology. You can install it on up to ten devices with Windows 10, 8, 8.1 and Xbox One.

This program can be a little challenging to set up for those who are not as tech-savvy. If you want to connect to computers outside of your home network, you will need to know the IP address of the device. Also, you need to be able to configure their router to accept the connection.

You cannot transfer files over the connection established by Microsoft Remote Desktop, but you can copy and paste information. It is designed to work in an office environment, so if you just want something to use at home, this won’t be your best choice.

4. Lite Manager

The desktop sharing program Lite Manager is an under-appreciated program with the same features as some of the more expensive tools. It includes file transfer and chats and supports multiple languages.

Also included in Lite Manager are a screen recorder, the ability to remotely install screen-sharing software, a registry editor and network mapping.

Lite Manager comes with a free and pro version. The paid version is only $10, but most users won’t need it due to the robust features of the free version.

5. AnyDesk

The AnyDesk software works with a variety of platforms and mobile devices to transfer files, collaborate while screen sharing, and even make presentations. Connecting is easy. You only need to know the host’s AnyDesk address or alias.

Other features of AnyDesk include a slider to balance the speed of your connection with the quality for the best possible experience. You can also sync clipboards and record the session.

AnyDesk can be run either as a portable program or a desktop app. Its security features include encryption and verified connections. It is possible to restrict who can access your computer by using a whitelisting feature.

Even though there is excellent security built into these programs, nothing is ever entirely safe. If you have an account you log into when accessing the app, it is easier to hack. Make sure you only give access to those you completely trust.

Exploring The Possibilities Of Machine Learning In The Enterprise

It’s something we use dozens of times throughout our day, and yet we may not even recognize it. Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that is beginning to bring major changes to how we live and do business today — and we’ve only just begun to tap its true potential.

Machine Learning Explained

The term refers to the practice of feeding a computer algorithm a huge amount of data and allowing it to identify patterns within the information without being programmed by humans to do so — and then making a prediction about the world around it. There are a number of methods which can be used to enable these algorithms to learn and, in turn, use predictive modeling to improve over time.

Use AI to Work Without Barriers

White Paper

Stanford University defines this brand of artificial intelligence as “the science of getting computers to act without being explicitly programmed.” Nidhi Chappell, head of AI at Intel, recently explained in WIRED: “The way I think of it is: AI is the science and machine learning is the algorithms that make the machines smarter. So the enabler for AI is machine learning.”

What is it Used for Today?

The goal of AI is to mimic human behavior. In its latest TechRadar report on AI, Forrester says AI differs from traditional technologies “in its ability to sense, think and act while constantly learning.”

One application is self-driving cars. By using cameras, cars can “sense” the world around them. Powerful processors allow them to “think” about what they should do, and automated control systems let driverless cars “act” — all without human intervention. Smartphone digital assistants are another example. They hear our voice (sense); parse what we mean (think); and carry out the task requested (act) without the user having to touch the screen.

Financial services providers are using machine learning to spot trends in data as well as automatically detect fraud. The medical world is using it to identify potential health risks and even suggest treatments. Governments are applying it to the vast troves of data they typically collect to find cost savings and efficiencies.

What’s Next?

Take, for example, a manufacturing line. By employing a deep neural net and training it to maximize output, this technology can have a huge impact on the bottom line of a business. Organizations can use information generated from the neural net to identify inefficiencies within legacy machines and implement preventative maintenance.

Beyond the manufacturing floor, a U.S. beer company is using basic deep learning systems to create more drinkable beer, and the system can be applied to all types of food and drink. The NBA’s Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers both use a deep learning system to analyze player performance.

Businesses will also be able to combine other artificial intelligence technologies with machine learning to give them unparalleled insight and offer new services. For example, technologies such as iris scanning in combination with predictive modeling can provide automated and secure access to hotel rooms or conferences.

We’re still writing the first chapter of the artificial intelligence revolution, and because new technologies are still evolving, they’re in need of constant human oversight. However, these technologies will come to dominate the 21st century, and will become so pervasive that all companies — no matter their size or industry — need to embrace them or risk being left behind.

Trends that are contributing to the rise of the digital workforce include augmented reality and the Internet of Things.
