Though TikTok rose to fame as a platform for Gen Z dance challenges, TikTok has grown to encompass every kind of content and community. In fact, with features like in-app shopping, livestreaming, and branded hashtag challenges, it’s now an essential tool for brands looking to connect directly with customers. (Good thing it’s finally possible to schedule TikTok posts.)

General TikTok statistics

Here are some more fascinating TikTok statistics about the app that’s now the sixth most popular social media platform in the world.

TikTok is the #1 downloaded app in more than 40 countries, available in 150+ markets and 35+ languages.

In 2023, TikTok was the second-most downloaded app globally, placing runner-up to Instagram… though it was the most downloaded app on the Apple App Store.

TikTok has 150 million monthly active users in the U.S.

TikTokers use the app for an average of 1.5 hours every single day.

China’s version of TikTok, Douyin, meanwhile, has 600 million active daily users… a number that experts project will pass 835 million by 2025.

TikTok is the sixth most frequently used social media app, up from its seventh-place finish in 2023 (Facebook, Youtube, Whats app, Instagram, and WeChat outrank it).

However, when you rank apps for highest usage time, TikTok climbs the charts slightly, clocking in at #5. In other words: TikTok may have fewer users than Instagram, but it appears to be more compelling.

TikTok users spend 22.9 hours per month on the app; Youtube clocks in with a slightly higher number at 23.4 hours monthly.

Users tune in to TikTok to find fun: 4 in 5 users rate Tiktok as very or extremely entertaining.

The most popular TikTok hashtag is #fyp, which has 18.57 trillion views to date. The second-most popular hashtag is #viral, which clocks in at a mere 6.3 trillion views.

90% of TikTok users report that the platform makes them happy and never gets boring.

TikTok user statistics

You’ve probably got a broad picture in your head of who the average TikTok user is — but the truth is, not every one of the billion global active users on the platform is a Billie Eilish impersonator.

These are also people who are interested in engaging with brands and doing some serious shopping… so if your company is on the ‘Tok, it’s time to get to know (and love) your viewers.

TikTok recently surpassed a huge milestone: 1 billion global active users. That’s 18% of internet users worldwide.

While TikTok may get a reputation as being for teenagers, a full 24% of its global audience is women aged 18 to 24. Male users of this age bracket make up another 18%.

31% of TikTok’s audience falls into the 25 to 34-year-old age group.

But TikTok users aren’t exclusive to the app — in fact, only 0.1% of TikTok users only use TikTok. 83.4% also use Facebook, 81% also use Instagram, and 77% are also using Youtube. The least likely overlap is with Reddit—only 16.7% of TikTok users are also regulars there.

There are 120.5 million monthly active users on iOS devices alone.

29% of active users open the app every single day.

…and yet, only 5.6% of active social media users aged 16 to 64 called TikTok their favorite platform. (That honor goes to Whatsapp, with 16.1% of the population naming it as their #1 pick).

However, among younger, female-identifying demographics, that number is higher: 11.3% of this group called TikTok their favorite.

Only 6.6% of male users in that age bracket call TikTok their favorite platform, preferring Instagram, Whatsapp, Facebook, and WeChat.

Black and Hispanic teens report using TikTok more frequently than White teens.

TikTok usage statistics

Knowing who uses TikTok is important for marketers, but so is understanding how they use it. Though TikTok may have originally been created as a lip-synching app, its function has evolved beyond anyone’s imagination.

Now, it’s an entertainment hub and education tool, one that users flock to for research, information, shopping, and laughs. (And, yes, lip-synching and dancing are still as popular as ever here.)

Communities find each other here — hey, #witchtok! — and new languages are created. Yes, technically you could describe TikTok as a short-form video platform (and we absolutely did earlier in this story), but the truth is, it’s a powerful social connecter and communication tool, too.

Gen Z uses TikTok as a search engine: nearly 40% of this demographic prefers searching for info on TikTok and Instagram over Google.

78% of TikTok users are there to find funny or entertaining content, while 35.1% use TikTok to follow or research brands.

TikTok is frequently used as a news tool: 32.4% of TikTok users globally are on the app to keep up-to-date with current events. In the U.S., one-quarter of U.S. adults under 30 say they get their news on TikTok regularly.

When it comes to total usage time, TikTok ranks fifth (behind Youtube, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Google Chrome).

According to Pew Research, 16% of teenagers say they use TikTok “almost constantly” (19% say the same about YouTube).

TikTok for business statistics

If you’re not using TikTok for business yet, you’re making a mistake, my friend.

Given the fact that a billion people of all ages are active on the app, chances are, you’ll find your audience hanging out here. TikTokers are actively searching for product recommendations and reviews, hungry for content from their favorite brands.

While it’s true not every social platform is a fit for every target audience, the business opportunities here on TikTok are too rich not to at least explore. And you don’t have to be online all day — now that you can schedule TikToks, it’s easier than ever to participate in this digital business boom at your own convenience. Read on for TikTok business statistics that might just inspire you to brush up on your video editing skills.

TikTok has a potential ad reach of 945.2 million (among users aged 18+).

People love to spend money on TikTok. In 2023, TikTok was the top app for consumer spending — more than Youtube!

It was also the platform with the highest ad-spend growth, climbing 29% quarter over quarter in 2023 (The top spenders? Amazon, Google and Disney!).

No wonder that in 2023, TikTok was valued at $443.48 billion USD.

TikTok creator Khabane Lame is the most followed creator on TikTok, with 152 million subscribers as of November 2023. (Charlie D’amelio is #2, with 149 million.)

41% of TikTok users say “lifting their spirits” is key in motivating them to make a purchase.

Millennial TikTok users love brands: they are 2.3x more likely to create a post and tag a brand than other platforms.

There you have it: the cold, hard numbers behind the hottest app in town. How To Repost On Tiktok: Everything You Need To Know

Sharing a video is the only option for users to send their favorite posts to others, and this has thus far been accomplished in three ways — 1) copying the link to the original video and sharing it to others via networking apps, or 2) saving a video to the camera gallery and reuploading it as one’s own, or 3) stitching or dueting with other’s contents to share it on one’s profile. If your purport is pure, then you can save all this trouble and directly share or repost someone else’s video on TikTok.

Wait, so TikTok has a “repost” button now? Since when? Since very recently. Let’s see how it works and how to use the feature.

TikTok “Repost” in a glance

Let’s take a look at how it is done.

How to repost on TikTok

Launch the TikTok app on your device.

Tap the Home icon to go to your ‘For You’ feed.

Hit the arrow icon of the share button.

Tap Repost found next to the contacts at the top row.

The first time you use this function, a popup informs you about its purpose and effects. Hit Repost to continue.

Enter your message in the text box and hit Add.

How to undo TikTok repost

As we already discussed, the TikTok videos you find by any other means such as a link you received over the DMs, from a creator’s profile, or from the TikTok Discover do not come with a repost button. Hence, once you repost something, you ought to remove it immediately lest you lose the opportunity to do it later.

To undo a repost, all you have to do is tap the Repost button again.

A popup asks you to confirm the activity. Hit Remove to proceed.

How does TikTok repost work: Things to know

The purpose of the TikTok reposting function is to allow users to share their favorite content with their followers and the shared content gets sort-of organically recommended to the mutual follows.

As a video-sharing platform with its root deeply embedded in content sharing and global discovery, why hasn’t TikTok introduced a similar feature to its arsenal?

It is likely that it wasn’t not considered, but because of the lurking threat of power abuse involved that has likely kept the repost feature from making its way over until now. TikTok’s “for you” page recommendations are brought to each user after grinding through the sieve of the algorithm that only allows ‘related’ or interesting content to users. So, if you follow a few popular creators who form a pact to support each other by reposting each other’s content, imagine what kind of mess your FYP would fall into?

However, the repost feature on TikTok seems to have found a workaround for this. Because, even if you follow some influential TikToker, their reposts won’t show up on your feed unless they follow you as well. Hence, manipulation to cheat the algorithm is expected to be less with such a root formula guiding the repost function.

However, reposting is also a necessary function expected by users as we often come across videos that we wish to share with someone else. Previously, the most used method was to share the link of a video with others in DMs. There is the second category of users who often download other creators’ content and upload it as their own. However, reposting someone else’s original content is highly frowned upon on TikTok. Hence, the repost feature is anticipated to remedy the situation at hand and allow for easy video sharing and recommendations.

Alternate ways to “repost” a video on TikTok

While it may not be “reposting” in the real sense of the word, another way to share a TikTok video is by sending the link to it to someone else. Sharing the link to videos comes in handy when you find a video from anywhere on the app; that is to say, fetching and sharing the link does away with the restriction of the repost button to the home feed on TikTok.

Method 1: Copying the link to a video for sharing

Launch the TikTok app on your device.

On any video that’s playing, tap the Share icon.

Tap the link icon to copy the link.

You can paste the link in the text box of any interactive app like WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.

Another method to repost a video is by uploading someone’s content as your own. Here is how it is done.

Method 2: Downloading a video to re-upload it

Launch the TikTok app on your device.

On any video that’s playing, tap the Share icon.

Tap Save video to download it to your camera roll.

Now, open the TikTok app and tap the Record button to go to the create page.

Tap Upload to access the videos in your camera roll.

Select the videos and tap Next.

In the editing page, add overlays and effects of choice, and tap Next.

Add captions and adjust the privacy setting on the processing page. Hit Post.

The videos uploaded thus would have watermarks of the original creator’s details on the video, you can use the link to download the videos from websites that remove watermarks from downloaded videos.

Method 3: Stitching or Dueting with other creators’ videos.

When you stitch or duet with other videos, they appear on your profile along with the additions you have made to it. For instance, when you stitch with a video, you can take a 5-second byte from someone else’s video as a starter clip for your own video. Similarly, when you duet with some, you can “share” the screen with them by appearing on split-screen with their original content. You can read more about stitching with someone else’s video on TikTok by following the link below.

There, now we have seen all the ways to repost and share someone’s video on TikTok. The new Repost feature is definitely a bonus to recommend the videos we like to our followers and similarly view the content they like in our for you feed recommends.

New Gmail Tabs – What Email Marketers Need To Know And Do

A briefing and ressearch on the impact of Google’s new Tabbed Inbox

December 2013 update: Return Path have released a comprehensive study evaluating the impact of Gmail’s tabbed inbox. We have added it to the end of Tim’s post to enable readers to compare their open and delivery rates in Gmail.

In August 2013, Google made two important changes to the Gmail inbox that all email marketers need to understand.

What has changed?

The two changes that Google have made are distinct, but have been introduced together.

1. Tabs added to the inbox separating promotional, social updates and other email

2. Ads that look like emails may be placed at the top of the promotional tab

These changes are being automatically rolled out to all Gmail users.

As Gmail users access their inbox they will see this popup to inform them about the inbox change:

Then the Gmail web interface looks like this with the tabs

And on mobile like this

Should an Ad be targeted this is how it appears

Is Google trying to stop commercial email?

I do not think Google is trying to stop promotional email, rather they are wanting a cut of the action. The fact that Google has put its new email like Ads in the promotional tab means they want, intend and indeed need users to go to the promotional tab.

If users don’t go to the promotions tab then Google won’t get revenue from their Ads and thus Google will change the interface again. Right now Google has a strong incentive to ensure users do review their promotions tab.

What impact will this have?

The real question is not about how inbox functionality has changed but rather will it alter the way that users perceive, think and interact with email?

Will users just not go to the promotions tab? This would seem an odd behaviour. If someone has proactively signed up and given permission for emails, why would they then totally ignore them? Surely they wouldn’t sign-up in the first place?

Why is Google doing this?

Officially Google are doing this to help Gmail users saying that it “puts you back in control” of your email.

In fact, this is a big acknowledgement from Google about the power of email and the huge revenues email marketers are driving from their lists. Google is clearly looking at the revenue and working out how they can piggy back off of the success of email marketing.

What should I check?

Check your database to see how many Gmail users you have. If you are strongly B2B its likely to be small and the change will have minimal material impact.

MailChimp ran analysis last week to see if this change has impacted open rates and the first signs are there is a small impact, a drop of 1% from 13% to 12% on open rates.

Open rates provide a view of campaign impact. However, open rates are not a strong indicator of commercial success and don’t map to conversion at all accurately. To really understand if your activity has been impacted check your conversion and revenue metrics, look at whether the revenue per Gmail subscriber per month changes.

The rollout has been happening in June, so look at trend changes in the three months before June and compare against August onwards.

What action should I take?

This example spotted by Alchemy Worx from the Outnet.

In short ask customers to do one of:

Star your emails*

Move one of your emails to the Primary tab

Drag and drop one of your emails to the Primary tab

*Default behaviour for starred emails is to go to the Primary tab. However this can be controlled by the tab settings dialog that looks like this

One brand marketer reported they had a 21% read rate from such a message, which they were happy with.

 What about the future?

The truth is that right now we don’t know for sure what the final impact will be. When Google added the priority inbox there was a mass of concern and gloom. After the dust settled there weren’t reports that it had made a material difference to email effectiveness.

This isn’t the first and neither will it be the last change to way the inbox works.

Email sits at the core of the online world, everyone person online has an email address and checks their inbox. There are no signs that this is going to change, the need for personal electronic messaging remains and should Google stop the inbox working in the way customers want it to work then they will leave and use a different inbox solution.

For commercial email to stop working requires customers to stop wanting commercial email. Technology can’t change customer desire for offers, deals, information and all the other reasons they sign-up in the first place.

The basics of email marketing are truer than ever. Get opt-in permission and provide email content that on balance is of sufficient value to you customer that you remain wanted and welcome in the inbox on a regular basis.

New December 2013 research on the impact of Gmail’s tabbed inbox

This new research from Return Path is based on a decent sample – they analyzed data from its panel of email users—approximately 3 million people who agree to anonymously share their aggregated inbox experience. This includes 400,000 distinct Gmail inbox configurations.

The main findings of the research relevant to email marketers are that:

90% of commercial email is delivered to the Promotions tab

Consumers continued to engage with Promotions emails as shown by the Gmail Before / After open, delivery and complaint rate data below.

Efforts to persuade consumers to add their messages to the Primary tab made little difference

Mailchimp also has a detailed analysis on the impact of Gmail’s tabbed inbox on opens . It shows the percentage changes in opens are significant when compared to other email services included for comparison.

Is The Tiktok Creator Fund Worth It? Everything You Need To Know

TikTok launched the Creator Fund in spring 2023 with an initial investment of $200 million. But reviews from participants have been mixed.

It’s hard to imagine what viral moment will take the world by storm this year, but we can almost guarantee it’ll trend on TikTok first. And the app’s endless popularity means there are plenty of ways to monetize.

Among them is the TikTok Creator Fund, which launched last year with a whopping initial investment of $200 million USD and a promise to reach $1 billion in the next three years.

Yes, there’s presumably a large bag of TikTok money just waiting to be claimed by the smartest, most engaging content creators. But what exactly is the TikTok Creator Fund, and is it worth your time?

We’ve answered all of your questions about this exciting (and potentially controversial) new program.

What is the TikTok Creator Fund?

@tiktok_uk

The Creator Fund is open! We’re so excited to celebrate creativity with a European fund of €254 million. See link in bio for more info 🥳

♬ Originalton – TikTok UK

It’s right there in the name: the TikTok Creator Fund is a monetary fund for creators. It’s not an ad revenue sharing program like YouTube’s AdSense, nor is it a form of arts grant. It’s simply a way for TikTok to share income with creators who are killing it on the platform.

TikTok first launched the Creator Fund in the spring of 2023 with an initial investment of $200 million USD. In the company’s own words, the fund was launched “to encourage those who dream of using their voices and creativity to spark inspirational careers.”

The TikTok Creator Fund was an instant success (although not without its controversies, as you’ll soon read). The fund is so popular, in fact, that the company will increase it to $1 billion within the next three years.

TikTok has been decidedly secretive about their payout structure, but the general idea is that users who meet their requirements will be compensated for well-performing videos. How TikTok calculates their payouts is based on factors like views, video engagement and even region-specific performance.

It should go without saying, but the videos also need to adhere to the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, so you’ll have to rack up your views without breaking the rules.

How much does the TikTok Creator Fund pay?

When TikTok users first learned about this enormous fund, they understandably had dollar signs in their eyes (no filter necessary). But even with multiple millions at play, high-performing TikTok users shouldn’t expect a life-changing payday just yet.

There are no hard rules about how much the TikTok Creator Fund pays its contributors. But plenty of creators have gone on record to explain their own experience with the Creator Fund.

The general consensus is that TikTok pays between 2 and 4 cents for every 1,000 views. Some quick math suggests you might expect $20 to $40 after reaching a million views.

At first glance, that might look pretty bad. But remember: the fund should inspire creators to, well, keep creating. Master your TikTok game and you could be hitting millions of views on a regular basis.

Once you’ve racked up at least $10 from the Fund, you can simply withdraw your Creator Fund payout using an online financial service like Paypal or Zelle.

Who can join the TikTok Creator Fund?

The TikTok Creator Fund is available for users based in the US, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. Yes, Canadians and Australians are out of luck for now, but rumour has it the fund will launch in their respective countries later in 2023.

As long as you’re in the right location, there are a few other requirements to join the Creator Fund.

You need to have a Pro account (and it’s easy to make the switch if you don’t)

You need to have at least 10,000 followers

You need to have received at least 100,000 views in the last 30 days

You also need to be 18 or older and make sure you’re following the TikTok Community Guidelines and terms of service. And in order to make money off your work, you should be making original content.

If you meet those requirements, you’re good to sign up for the Creator Fund. But should you?

Is it worth it to join the TikTok Creator Fund?

As with any new social media feature, there has been plenty of debate (and downright drama) over the TikTok Creator Fund. From valid concerns to surprising benefits, let’s dig into the pros and cons of the fund:

Pros Money!

It goes without saying that getting paid for your work is always a good thing, so payouts from TikTok are an obvious pro. Even if the amounts are small, money is a great motivator to keep uploading.

Unlimited Money!

Another great thing about the Creator Fund is that TikTok hasn’t set a limit for how much money one user can make. So if you do master the platform and break into the multi-million view zone, you could theoretically start raking in some decent cash.

Friendship!

The Creator Fund is also a great way to foster community and set apart users who have shown a dedication to the platform. From TikTok’s perspective, it’s also a great way keep their high-performing users dedicated to the app rather than switching over to YouTube or Instagram.

Cons Conspiracy…

Some users have claimed that their views have been cut (by the algorithm?) since they signed up for the Creator Fund. TikTok has denied this theory, explaining that participation in the fund has no bearing on the algorithm. Others think view counts might seem lower because there are so many more Fund recipients flooding the feed.

Confusion…

While they’re decent with general analytics, TikTok is super secretive about how they calculate payouts. The 2-4 cents rule is based on hearsay from users, as is just about everything else from the Fund. In fact, the user agreement states that reporting metrics and other private information about the fund are meant to be kept confidential.

Commitment…

Outside of hearsay, the biggest potential downside of the Creator Fund is the simple fact that you’ll need to create a ton of content, and have it perform incredibly well, in order to make cash from the app. For some, that might make TikTok feel more like a job than a fun hobby.

So is the TikTok Creator Fund worth it? It really boils down to personal choice. Knowing what we know, you’re not going to be buying a TikTok hype house with the money you make from the program, but it’s also a low-risk way to create more passive income on your content.

Assuming you meet the requirements, it doesn’t hurt to try it out. Plus, you can always quit if you’re not feeling it.

Think of it like another tool in your influencer toolbox. Pair it with other monetization options like sponsored posts via the TikTok Creator Marketplace or merch sales, brand deals, crowdfunding and other strategies.

How to join the TikTok Creator Fund

If you meet all of the requirements listed earlier in this article, it’s super easy to apply for the Creator Fund. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Make sure you have a Pro account.

If you’re already signed up for TikTok with a Pro account, you can skip this step. Otherwise, simply open the app and tap Me to go to your profile.

2. Head to Settings and Privacy. 3. Read the fine print.

It’s probably a good idea to actually read through the TikTok Creator Fund Agreement before you agree to anything. You’ll also need to confirm that you’re over the age of 18.

4. Submit and wait.

TikTok will let you know if they decide to approve your application. And don’t worry — if you get rejected, you can apply again in 30 days.

Among Us Movie In 2023? All You Need To Know

Although it came into being in mid-2023, Among Us has taken the world by storm with millions of users either playing the game or binge-watching its streams on Twitch and Youtube.

The reason for the game’s long-time success has certainly been its plot where you’re required to complete little tasks as crew-mates of a spaceship and prepare it for launch. But that’s not just it; you’re also expected to stay vigilant and keep an eye for an imposter who’s simultaneously working to kill some of the members in secret.

The game’s plot has led many fans to believe that an Among Us movie is coming soon. But is it? That’s what we’re here to discuss.

Is an ‘Among Us’ movie coming in 2023?

No. Not until the time of writing this. While there have been many rumors floating around about an upcoming movie that’s based on the indie game, there’s no solid reason to believe that an ‘Among Us’ movie is going to drop in 2023. The reason for netizens to believe such a movie is coming is because there are several fan-made posters for the ‘Among Us’ movie that doesn’t exist.

Posters like the one in the tweet below have left some fans confused, so much to an extent that some do expect that such a thing is in the making.

— Bixels (on hiatus) (@BixelsWixels) September 21, 2023

Another reason why there are rumors of an Among Us movie is that Netflix is known to produce live-action movies that are based on games, comics, and books. But that doesn’t mean everything that’s popular will be turned into a movie and until now, there has been no worthwhile development or even an indication of an Among Us-themed movie.

Isn’t ‘Among Us’ already a movie?

Yes. There’s in fact a horror-drama movie that’s actually titled ‘Among Us’. The movie was released in 2023 and it’s about a couple whose young son was killed in a mysterious death and now they’re fleeing to a remote lake house to escape the supernatural activity that continues to haunt them. Struggling to save their sanity, they reach out to seek the help of a clairvoyant to end the dread once and for all.

This 2023 horror movie has an IMDB rating of 4.3 stars and if you haven’t realized it yet, NO, this movie has nothing to do with the Among Us video game that has been popular lately.

What’s with the Among Us movie rumors?

As we have mentioned above, Among Us has inspired many fans to make fan-art posters that might look very close to being real but they’re not. It took one person to start joking about an Among Us movie and it didn’t take long for others to join the wagon.

The number of fan posters and jokes for the supposed Among Us movie grew in so many numbers that it has made many of us anticipate that such a thing is close to being on the big screen.

Look at this poster! It just looks real, doesn’t it?

Which movie closely resembles the Among Us game?

If you have played Among Us for quite some time and you’re wondering whether there has been a movie that’s similar to the space indie game, then you might like this.

The Thing: Released and set in 1982, this Sc-Fi mystery horror movie takes place in a US research station in Antarctica. The research team finds the remains of a strange creature that has shape-shifting powers and later hunts them so that they can take over and assimilate into other life forms. Tensions escalate and soon no one trusts the person next to them – which is what Among Us is all about. The Thing has an 8.2 star-rating on IMDB and it’s pretty amazing how resembling the movie is to the latest viral game.

Life: Set at the International Space Station, a team of scientists starred by Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, and other prominent names discover that their life is in danger after the events that follow the collection of samples containing life form in Mars. Soon, the crew realizes that the single-celled organism can evolve rapidly and can be more intelligent than what they thought it to be. This Sci-Fi Thriller movie was released in 2023 and has an IMDB rating of 6.6 stars.

Sunshine: This Danny Boyle-directed film is as close to Among Us as a movie can ever be and revolves around a team of international astronauts that embark on a mission to reignite the dying Sun. Released in 2007 but set in 2057, the astronauts devise to shoot a missile in the hopes of bombarding the sun but little do they realize that someone in their own team doesn’t want to mission to succeed. IMDB has rated this at 7.2 stars.

Solaris: This George Clooney-starrer revolves around a psychologist who’s sent to a space station that is orbiting the mysterious planet of Solaris. The psychologist seeks the truth behind what is making the crew members terrified after they witness a set of strange phenomena aboard the ship and fail to differentiate between what’s real and what’s not. While only rated 6.6 stars by IMDB users, Solaris could still be a decent watch if you want a bit of drama, science, and mystery.

10 Cloverfield Lane: While not set in space, this 2023 movie is what happens when you want to combine Among Us but you want to do it on Earth. Michelle finds herself inside a mysterious shelter after getting into a car accident and is made to believe that the outside world is affected by a widespread alien attack. But is it? IMDB recommends that you watch it as users have given it a 7.2-star rating.

Having filled with love for the game and after seeing the several fan posters that could have been made real, many have come to expect a movie that captures the essence of paranoia and thrill that you get when playing Among Us.

Although movies have made us realize that nothing is impossible to adapt, no one has announced that they’re making a movie about Among Us, not even Netflix. But don’t lose hope, there might always be new movies to look forward to and maybe, just maybe, the next space-based sci-fi title takes inspiration from the game.

Best Gear In Ac Valhalla: Everything You Need To Know

Assassin’s Creed takes things up a notch with its riveting new 2023 title – Valhalla. Other than being set in 873 BC, depicting the Viking conquest of East England from the Nordic north, there is a slew of changes introduced this time to empower the player’s choices and improve the gameplay. One of them is undoubtedly in the way the game approaches Gear.

Although there are various weapons and armor sets that are truly awesome in both form and function, there is no metric to judge these since Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a supremely customizable game. Regardless of what gear you have, as long as you upgrade it to the max, it’s going to be on par with any other weapon that you compare it against.

In this guide, we go through everything related to Gear in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – the gear system, how it is different from previous iterations, how to acquire and upgrade, and lots more. Rest assured, there won’t be any spoilers here.

What counts as Gear?

Basically, anything that you can pick up and equip or slot in your inventory is considered gear. If you take a look at the Inventory Screen, you’ll see the first two boxes are Quiver and Rations.

The four slots left of your character include your Cloak (hood), Torso, Bow, and your Main Melee Weapon. The four slots right of your character include a Helmet, Arms/Bracers, Legs/Boots, and your off-hand weapon/shield.

Further to its right, you’ll see your satchel that contains some extra resources which can be gathered by basically exploring the wide-open world of Valhalla, completing side-quests, hunting animals, and opening chests.

The Valhalla Approach to Gear (Few but Focused)

Compared to Odyssey, Valhalla has a much more focused approach to gear and what you need in the game. Unlike Odyssey, where every single enemy was a potential loot providing varying stats and perks and you had to go on killing sprees to ensure that you covered your gear, Valhalla keeps things simple.

There are no generic armor and weapons – all are unique and all have a name. Every time you find a piece of gear, you’ll find that it has a particular place in your overall gear system.

What this means is that, should you choose to equip it, it could very well be a part of your whole game. As such, gear takes center stage again and has special prominence in Valhalla compared to previous games.

The simplicity of the gear system is one of the defining factors of Valhalla. It finds the middle ground between acquiring and upgrading your gear and using it in your builds. There are no limits to how much you can equip and upgrade since there are no character levels in Valhalla.

They do, however, have varying starting tiers depending on the location where they’re found. Every location in Valhalla will have its own recommendation in terms of the Power Level and the gear items will follow that.

Gear Categories (and Skill-Tree)

The gear that you own can be categorized based on the purpose that it serves – Weapon, Armor, and Shields. It can be leveled up with Runes. On top of that, every single piece of gear will also have a skill affiliation based on the group that it belongs to. Basically, there are three Skill Trees:

Way of the Raven (Yellow): ideal for stealth-based gameplay.

Way of the Wolf (Blue): for those who require a ranged focus.

Way of the Bear (Red): melee focus, to brute force your way through.

The Skill Tree will further increase the impact of your gear.

Inside the Skill Tree, you’ll unlock Nodes that either increase your basic fighting stats or main skills to unlock passive abilities. The abilities that you unlock in your skill tree will have an influence on the gear item, that is if it matches your learned Passive abilities.

No matter which node on the Skill Tree you upgrade, it is going to improve your character in some way. If you want to go in a particular direction of the Skill Tree, you can always plan ahead as they are more suited towards the playing style that you incline towards (stealth, ranged, or brute).

How to acquire gear

There are a few ways by which you can get gear – by completing missions and quests, looting it from treasure chests, buying it from merchants, or the ever-reliable exploration of the world.

Completing Quests

Now, don’t expect gear every time you finish a quest, main or otherwise. But in certain cases, you will receive parts of weapons, armor, and shields upon finishing quests. Many of them are spectacular both in form and function and will give Eivor the much-needed boost to his/her skills.

You don’t have any way of knowing whether you’re going to receive gear before you embark on a quest, so when you do get them it comes as a pleasant surprise.

Explore the World

This ties in perfectly with the breath-taking wide-open world of Valhalla. Regardless of where you are in the story, you can always travel around, including Norway. Every last inch of the map is there for exploring and hunting down gear pieces.

You can even get some assistance from the game’s interface to reveal some treasures that contain gear pieces, ingots, and even new abilities. These will be revealed on the map when you get closer to them as gold dots.

Buy from Merchants

Merchants are found in the bigger towns and cities of Valhalla. But before you can trade with them, you’ll need to establish trust with the leader of the region. In your own Ravensthorpe settlement, you can build a Trading Post.

In the shops, you’ll receive a mix of resources and will have to be traded with silver which is the basic game currency. How do you get silver? Looting, basically, and selling them to the merchants.

From Reda

At some part of the story, the shady merchant Reda will appear. His offerings are quite unique that prop up both your gear and the way you look. However, he deals only in Opal that can be obtained after you complete his and his associates’ contracts (they are in every town’s market). Opal is also found through map explorations in small amounts.

Do note that his offerings are at a higher tier than whatever you can find in the world, which is why they are also quite expensive.

Upgrading your Gear

Every single gear piece can be upgraded 10 times which is highlighted by small rectangles in the item’s description.

They all come at different levels based on where you find them. Some of them will come partially upgraded when you get them from quests in the later game which does compensate for the time and energy you’ve spent in acquiring them. That means you don’t have to upgrade every single piece of gear from the very beginning.

How to Upgrade Gear

Go to Inventory and find the gear that you want to upgrade. To level up, navigate to the green slot and interact with it to upgrade.

Every gear will require the necessary resources to upgrade it. The slot will become unlocked and available only when you have the item.

Upgrading Gear Tier

While we’re on upgrading gear, it is also important that you upgrade their tiers. Some of the items will require a higher tier to upgrade than others. This is quite logical since gear pieces are found at different stages of the game and in different regions of the map.

All in all, there are four of these tiers:

Tier 1 – Fine: Basic tear with 2 level slots; No runes.

Tier 2 – Superior: Upgrade till level 4; 1 Rune slot.

Tier 3 – Flawless: Upgrade till level 7; 2 Rune slots.

Tier 4 – Mythical: Upgrade till level 10; 3 Rune slots.

To upgrade your Gear Tier, you need to, first of all, build a settlement and visit Gunnar.

In his smithy, you can simply hover over the item you wish to upgrade and find out what the next Tier will look like.

You will also require Ingots to upgrade the gear tiers. For the first Basic to Superior Tier upgrade, you’ll need the Carbon Ingot.

For the Superior to Flawless Tier upgrade, you’ll need Nickel Ingot.

For the Flawless to Mythical Tier upgrade, you’ll need Tungsten Ingot.

Gear Upgrade Resources – Where to Find them?

A simple gear upgrade will require things like Leather, Fabric, Ore, and such things (which aren’t that hard to get). They can easily be acquired by exploring the world.

Hunting animals will get you Leather. Mining glowing rocks will get you ore. Fabric and Titanium (which are rarer) are found in chests, so make sure you never let a chest go unpopped, even underwater.

Ingots, on the other hand, are some of the rarest resources to find. These, too, are found in treasure chests or be bought in shops.

About Runes

Starting from Tier 2, you’ll start receiving Rune slots. Runes will let you increase specific stats boost perks.

There are two types of runes, based on their slot shapes – circular and rectangular. The former is usually found as loot, while the latter can be a tad harder to find. Rectangular runes will drop from Order of the Ancients members. The shops will start offering them as well when you reach a higher Power Level. As you level up, the offerings in the shops will also get upgraded.

How many rune slots an item has will depend on the gear type and its tier. Weapons and Shields can have one rectangular and two circular rune slots. All armor items have three circular rune slots, except for the torso which has one rectangular and two circular rune sots.

The main difference between these shape-based runes is that the rectangular one will only provide a temporary boost while the circular ones are permanent.

Why Upgrade Gear

You can only go so far before you’ll have to upgrade your gear. Gears at a higher tier will ensure that you can augment Eivor’s abilities and insert Runes into your gear to further diversify what it can do. Upgrading a whole armor set will also ensure that you get additional bonuses.

Even though it may seem a bit of a hassle to upgrade your gear, it is still far from being as frustrating as it was in Odyssey. Besides, gear in Valhalla serves a broader purpose and gives you a sense of direction in your gameplay. You can pick out your weapon and armor set and stay with them for the entirety of the game.

Since you can upgrade just about everything, even if you start with something as small as a dagger, it will be as formidable a weapon as a giant ax or a sword by the time you’re done upgrading it completely. It all depends on what you put your resources into.

Best Gear to Upgrade First

So you don’t have enough resources but still want to ensure that you choose the best option when deciding which piece/item to upgrade first. We’d suggest you begin with your Weapon.

Defense becomes unnecessary when your offense is on point and you are careful enough to dodge incoming attacks. That is definitely the case in the earlier level when resources are hard to come by. But the exact item that you upgrade will depend on your play style.
