The new attribution model for AdWords was the talk of the town when it was first announced in 2023. But since then, it hasn’t received as much attention.
I can understand how he missed it. After all, it’s one of those AdWords settings that you can easily overlook if you don’t know it’s there.
Therefore, in this article, I’m going to recap what attribution settings are and reveal what you can expect if you start using the new models.
What is Attribution?That’s what attribution is all about.
Problems with the Old ModelIn the baseball jersey example above, the last ad would have gotten all the credit for the sale.
At the time, we could use Google Analytics assisted data to give us a fuller picture of what was happening. But it could be a hassle to try and “meld” Google Analytics data with what we were seeing in AdWords.
Google’s New Attribution ModelAs Google explains:
Attribution models give you more control over how much credit each ad and keyword gets for your conversions.
With this change, PPC pros could now choose which attribution model to use.
These attribution models include:
Linear
Time decay
Position based
Data-driven
And now instead of having to cobble together data from AdWords and Google Analytics, all this functionality now resides in AdWords!

Changes You May See With the New Attribution ModelsWhen we first tried some of the new attribution models, we noticed some changes in our accounts. You may also experience the following:
1. Your Branded Conversions May Drop and Non-Branded May RiseUnder some of the new models, you may see a drop in branded conversions but an increase in non-branded conversions (i.e., credit given to a branded ad versus credit given to a non-branded ad).
But now the data shows that would be a bad idea.
Having this fuller (and more accurate) picture of what’s going on makes it easier to optimize client accounts.
2. You May Need to Experiment to Find the Right ModelWhile having multiple attribution models to choose from is great, it isn’t always easy to know which ones to choose.
Unfortunately, we haven’t yet had the opportunity to use the data-driven attribution model as none of our clients have accumulated large enough amounts of data to make it available to us.

From the table, select the conversion action you want to change. You can then select the desired attribution model from the dropdown menu:

6 Ways To Ensure Your Adwords Campaign Fails
The depth of reporting and the ever-increasing complexity of AdWords means that even the most seemingly unimportant variable within your campaign can mean the difference between success and failure. For this reason, rather than spending time on how to improve performance in just one of many areas of your campaign, I’ve decided to list six ways that you’re almost certain to see failure when it comes to running an AdWords campaign.
1) Keeping All Campaigns Opted into the Display Network.By default, when you create an AdWords campaign, it will be opted within your account into both Search & Display Networks, as well as all devices. The main problem with this is that while the Display Network will generate a huge amount of traffic compared to Search, the conversion rate will generally be much lower. This means that you might find that almost your entire daily media budget is being spent on Display, leaving Search traffic with a smaller budget.
To ensure you’re getting the exposure you’re after on Google, opt out of the Display Network as soon as you create your campaign, and then create specific Display targeted campaigns to ensure budget caps are separate if you’d like to run activity in this area.
2) Creating a Single Campaign and AdGroup for All of Your KeywordsIf you’ve got 100 keywords within a single AdGroup, it’s almost impossible to create ad text that contains all of your keywords. This will have a very negative impact on your quality scores, which will ultimately result in inflated CPCs for your account. More on how to properly structure an AdWords campaign.
3) Using Broad Match for Your KeywordsWith the release of the newest AdWords match type, “broad match modifier,” the standard broad match would almost be considered obsolete in my opinion. The screenshot below from Google explains the difference between the two match types:

5) Competing in a Bidding WarYou can also explore different avenues, such as bidding for the same keyword on sites such as Yahoo! and Bing where the competition may not be as strong.
6) Sending All AdWords Traffic to Your Homepage.Doing this can negatively affect both your conversion rate and your AdWords quality score. Send users to the most relevant section of your website to ensure the conversion process is as easy as possible for your users, or even go one step better and create landing pages for each of your keyword areas. Landing pages have the benefit of focusing on only one action on your website, which is particularly useful for AdWords where the only thing you want users to do is purchase a product or contact you.
Hopefully, you’re now armed with a few new ideas on what not to do when it comes to setting up your AdWords campaign. Although there are many more things you’ll need to keep in mind, follow these steps, and you’ll be on the right track to ensuring your AdWords efforts are well worth your time and investment.
Difference Between Dispositional Attribution And Situational Attribution
The field of study known as “attribution theory” investigates the reasons people provide for their actions and the results they observe. In this context, “cause and effect” refers to the process of making a decision based on a variety of available pieces of evidence.
The Austrian psychologist Fritz Heider proposed that people attribute their actions to a mix of internal (dispositional) and external (situational) factors including attitude and ability. Heider furthered it by saying that people’s beliefs about what causes their actions are more important than the actual causes themselves. Humans, he said, act as “amateur psychologists” when they try to determine people’s intentions. A student, for instance, is more motivated to put in extra effort if he believes that his success is the result of his own efforts rather than random chance.
The basic attribution mistake (which will be detailed below) involves both dispositional and situational attributions, and both aim to explain the causes of behaviors. When discussing an individual’s actions, one might make a dispositional attribution, which focuses on the person’s own inherent traits, or a situational attribution, which emphasizes environmental circumstances. These contrasts will be explored in further depth in the following topics.
What is Dispositional Attribution?Attributing a behavior’s origin to anything inside, such one’s disposition, personality, emotions, appraisals, capacities, motivations, or beliefs, is known as dispositional attribution (McLeod, 2012). This form of attribution is made with the intention of enhancing the subject’s image (Communication Theory.org). A worker who is told that he was promoted because of his efforts is far more likely to put in the same level of effort in the future.
What is Situational Attribution?The concept of situational attribution (also called environmental attribution or external attribution) involves attributing a behavior’s occurrence to factors beyond the control of the individual, such as the environment, the opinions of others, the passage of time, the difficulty of the task at hand, or even sheer random chance (McLeod, 2012).
To provide just one example, a worker who was passed over for a promotion may attribute his or her failure to do so to unfavourable luck or the simple dislike of him or her by their superior.
The basic attribution fallacy is the common inclination to blame external causes for one’s own failures while assigning internal causes for the failures of others. As a result, we tend to give ourselves a pass while demanding perfection from those around us (Healy, 2023). For instance, one student could blame unforeseen traffic for his tardiness to class, while another would assume that his fellow student is just being lazy.

Someone who did not get promoted can blame luck or assume that his boss just didn’t like him.
Fundamental Attribution Error
People often make what’s known as the “fundamental attribution mistake,” or FAE, when they place blame for their own poor results on other causes rather than on themselves.
One student could claim that unforeseen traffic made him late to class, while another would assume that his tardiness was the result of laziness.
As a result, FAE relies on dispositional attribution to account for the mistakes of others.
A person uses situational attribution while discussing their own mistakes.

How To Make The Most Of Your Credit Card Points
If you have a credit card, you probably know the basic rewards it offers: maybe you get airline miles, maybe you get cash back, or perhaps it gives you points to shop on Amazon. How to choose the right credit cardTravel cards, for example, are extremely popular, and their points tend to be worth more than other types of rewards programs. But if you don’t travel very often, you might be better off with a cash-back card, even if those travel points give you more for your dollar. “I like to think about that ahead of time, so you can have a goal, something that you’re working toward,” says Harzog. Consider getting an airline miles card to help you pay for a trip to your brother’s wedding in Bermuda, for example.
If you’re comparing two similar cards and want to see which program’s points are more valuable, though, plenty of credit card sites—including U.S. News, The Points Guy, and others—have pages dedicated to calculating how much money different points are worth. For example, many airline programs redeem at a value between 1 and 2 cents per point, while most hotel points are worth significantly less—usually under a cent. So if you travel a lot, you might consider signing up for a miles program instead of a hotel points program.
Consider which points make the most sense for your usage, too. For example, my family lives in Detroit, which is a Delta hub. That means a Delta card makes a lot of sense for me. Even if I don’t fly Delta all the time, I know I’m guaranteed to fly there once or twice a year. Even if I liked another airline better, having that guarantee means my points will never go to waste.
Finally, when choosing a card, make sure you take into account all the hidden costs. For example, many cards offer a big signup bonus, but you have to spend a certain amount in the first three months to get those extra points. “Make sure you’re going to be able to spend enough within that three month period without spending more that you intend to,” says Harzog. “If you use that card for stuff you were going to buy anyway, you’re fine.” In addition, check the annual fee and make sure that your rewards outweigh the fee. You can sometimes call the credit card company and get the fee waived the first year (or more), too. And—though this should go without saying—don’t ever carry a balance on your card, since you’ll end up spending more in interest than you’ll ever gain in points.
Analyze your credit card benefitsOnce you pick a card that looks good, get to know all of its benefits. A lot of people miss out on certain perks because they didn’t pay close enough attention, says Harzog. “It’s very boring to read this stuff, and it’s hard to understand because it’s written by lawyers. Sometimes I have to read it a couple times.” Don’t hesitate to call the credit card issuer if you aren’t sure about something, and see if you can find discussion about the card elsewhere on the web that may shed light on its idiosyncrasies.

For example, I’ve had the popular Amazon Prime Rewards card for years, and it’s great for me—I shop a ton on Amazon, so I earn 5 percent back on all those purchases, and eventually accrue enough Amazon points to buy something really awesome. I did not realize, however, that I can also exchange those points for a statement credit of equal value. This is a much better option, even if I’m still going to buy that big-ticket item on Amazon—if I buy it on a card instead, I accrue more points. If I buy it with points, I get nothing. I’ve definitely missed out on a few hundred dollars over the years with this mistake.
Similarly, plenty of cards come with shopping portals—like United’s MileagePlus Shopping, or American Airlines’ AAdvantage eShopping—that can net you more points per dollar you spend, as long as you navigate to the retailer through the credit card’s website. If you’re debating between getting a gift card and redeeming for travel, you may find your redemption program places more value on one or the other.

How to track your credit card rewardsAwardWallet can also keep track of bonus categories that net you more points. “Say you’ve got the Blue Cash Preferred card, and you get 6 percent back at grocery stores,” says Harzog. “You’re going to want to be sure that you use that card when you go to the grocery store.” Many credit card sites can also send you reminders, especially with cards like Chase Freedom where those categories change every few months. If it helps, put sticky notes on your cards to remember which ones to use where.
Finally, “don’t forget to actually use those rewards,” Harzog says. “So many rewards are lost because people haven’t kept track, or they expire.” If you can, sign up for notifications to make sure you know when your points are going to disappear—that way, you don’t miss out on any free money.
