ATLANTA, GA–(Marketwired – May 14, 2013) – Aereo, Inc., today announced plans to launch its groundbreaking online television technology in the Atlanta metropolitan region. Beginning June 17, consumers who have pre-registered with Aereo will receive a special invitation to join and be one of the first to experience Aereo’s technology. After June 24, Aereo will make membership available to all eligible consumers across the Atlanta designated market area (DMA), which includes more than 5.3 million consumers in 55 counties across Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina. Atlanta joins Boston as the third city to launch as part of Aereo’s expansion announced in January.

Aereo’s innovative remote (cloud-based) antenna/DVR technology makes watching television simple and user-friendly. Using Aereo’s technology, consumers can pause, rewind and fast-forward any program that they are watching live, or save a program for future viewing. In Atlanta, there are 27 over-the-air broadcast channels accessible through Aereo’s antenna/DVR technology, including major networks such WSB-HD (ABC), WAGA-TV (FOX), WXIA-TV (NBC), WGCL-TV (CBS) and WPBA (PBS); special interest channels such as France24, BounceTV, MyTV, and AntennaTV; and Spanish-language broadcast channels such as Univision, MundoFox, and UniMas. In addition, consumers can also add Bloomberg Television, for a total of 28 channels.

5 Ways I’m Saving Money On Streaming Costs This Year

Many streaming companies also introduced price hikes last year. We saw Netflix and Amazon apply hefty jumps, whilst Disney also upped its fee in the US after a new ad-supported tier was introduced – the UK and the rest of the world are expected to follow suit in the coming months so watch out.  

Some of the biggest shows and films are often scattered across numerous platforms. As these are monthly bills, it is easy to sign up for multiple services. Before you know it your savings are being swallowed by subscriptions, some of which you might barely by using.  

With all that in mind, I’ve compiled some of the top tips to keep costs down. Hopefully, my bank account will thank me… and who knows, maybe yours will too.

Audit subscriptions and plan ahead

One of the biggest ways you may be losing money is by staying subscribed to something that you’re not using anymore. Netflix is the biggest culprit here – I’ve probably been forking out money for the streaming giant during months that I haven’t even heard the ‘Tudum’ sound of the platform loading up once.  

Keep a list on your phone of which services you’re subscribed to and their monthly costs as a reminder.

Streaming services don’t typically have penalties for leaving, and some even have incentives for coming back (like Sky’s streaming service, Now). Therefore, if you’ve not used something in a while, simply cancel it and keep your list of services on the low side. Be sure to check your monthly bank statement to see if there are any sneaky subscriptions in there that you’ve forgotten about.  

Better yet, if you’re waiting for a specific show or film to release, then mark it in your calendar to sign up when it comes out. For example, there isn’t another new live-action Marvel TV series until this spring, so if that’s all you use Disney+ for, you may as well cancel until then. 


Check if shows and movies are available via free streaming services 

One of the biggest mistakes I used to make is not checking what shows and films are available on services that don’t cost a penny.  

In the UK, there is BBC iPlayer (providing you hold a TV licence), ITVX, Channel 4, The Roku Channel and Amazon Freevee – the latter two are also available across the pond. US viewers can also stream CWTV and Peacock completely for free.  

Many of these platforms include on-demand content for some of the most popular shows such as Love Island and The Traitors, as well as a library of older classics like Broadchurch and Peaky Blinders.  

These platforms also sometimes get the rights to other popular shows and films. At the time of writing, ITVX has all the Back to the Future films and DC superhero hit Shazam!, whilst BBC iPlayer just got the streaming rights to HBO hit, Our Flag Means Death, and has the latest series of the epic fantasy show, His Dark Materials.

Not all platforms offer free trials, sadly. Netflix and Disney+ are two major ones that don’t but you can get them from the following:

It’s also worth keeping an eye out for discounts around Black Friday and other company specific events like Disney+ day. In the UK, we have seen major price slashes for Disney+ and Now around these periods, whilst HBO Max and Hulu had killer offers during sales.

I get it, sometimes cancelling is just not on the cards. However, it is worth thinking about downgrading a subscription to a cheaper one, providing you’re happy to make compromises.

Bundle in services with another contract  

It’s likely that you have other obligated contracts, such as a monthly smartphone bill, internet or cable TV. Nowadays, many big companies throw in a streaming subscription for zilch, so be sure to shop around.  

For example, in the US you can bag Amazon Prime via a Metro by T-Mobile subscription, and HBO Max via AT&T.

Those in the UK can get platforms like Netflix and Paramount+ for free via Sky, which also includes all the content on Now, or bundle in a Prime/Disney+ membership via a smartphone contract with O2 – even if it’s a SIM-only deal (I’m looking into that one as I write this).

What I’m watching this week 

During my teen years, I spent far too much time binging the same comedies repeatedly, and as such I missed out on a true classic. On the recommendation of my other half, I’m now two seasons deep into Community, and I’m truly addicted.

The show is about seven students at Greendale Community College who come from all walks of life. Against the odds, they form a study group, and the madness unfolds from there.

With a whole array of special guests and homages to film and television troupes, this is the perfect show to lighten your mood. What’s more, the cast of Community is reuniting for a film which is due to start filming this June. Therefore, now is the perfect time to get watching.

Google Assistant Is Coming To Smart Displays

With Google’s expansive booth set up on the CES floor, we’d already got the hint that the search giant was planning something big. Google has today announced that the Google Assistant is ready to take on the Amazon Echo Show and Spot with its own set of ‘Smart Displays’ – as the search giant likes to call them.

The Rise of Smart Displays

Ever since Amazon added a screen to their coveted Alexa-powered speakers, we had been waiting for Google to follow suit. It was expected sooner or later, thanks to the heating up rivalry between two of the biggest giants in the smart speaker/assistant ecosystem. We’ve seen both Google Assistant and Alexa find its way into many different pieces of hardware.

But, it seems that the company pulled a fast one on us by not adding a screen to its Google Home speaker. It has gone one step further and debuted an ecosystem of touchscreen devices that’ll benefit from Google Assitant’s smarts. Google likes to call them ‘Smart Displays’ and it has already got a bunch of partners, such as JBL, Lenovo, LG, and Sony, on board.

Not An Android Tablet!

The homescreen of the smart displays will resemble that of Google Now, which means it will show you everything from the weather forecast, and calendar appointments to traffic notification before you leave for work and other updates. You’ll be able to ask Google Assistant questions just like you did before, but you now also have a screen to interact with. The smart displays will now provide you an even intuitive user experience.

As for the underlying platform on smart displays, it is being said that Google Assistant is running atop the company’s ‘Android Things’ IoT platform. It is a skinned version of Android, designed especially for the Internet of Things devices. The platform is currently in developer preview, but the smart displays might be the required boost it needs to find a spot among hardware makers.

Lenovo Is Ahead of Others

Just moments after Google’s  announcement, Lenovo has shown off their first-ever Smart Display that’s powered by Google Assistant’s smarts. The Lenovo Smart Display is basically a trimmed-down and minimalistic version of Amazon’s Echo Show. It looks gorgeous and I am completely sold on Google’s action plan for the AI assistant here.

Lenovo’s Smart Display features two variants, with large 8-inch and 10-inch screens and is backed by the newly announced Qualcomm Home Hub platform. It’s powered by Qualcomm SDA 624 SoC, which integrates everything from CPU, GPU and DSP to robust Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity options.

Lenovo Smart Display’s 8-inch variant will retail at $199.99 whereas the larger 10-inch variant will require you shell out $50 bucks above that. The Chinese giant isn’t only offering you different screen sizes but two colour options, namely natural bamboo and soft grey, as well. They’re expected to become available for purchase in early summer.

This is just one of the many Google Assistant-backed smart display’s that will be launched in the coming weeks. It is a massive leap for Google Assistant who’ll not be giving its arch-rival an even tougher competition in the smart speaker (with a screen) market.

Net neutrality officially dies in June

Sorry to ruin your Thursday, but the FCC has announced when its new rules concerning internet service providers will go into effect. The FCC’s laughably-named “Restoring Internet Freedom Order” will take effect in June, removing regulations that prevented internet service providers from blocking or throttling internet traffic and implementing paid prioritization. The repeal vote took place in Demember 2023, despite repeated polls that show the US public greatly favors net neutrality protections and regulations.

Still, the FCC presses on, and today announced that its order will go into effect on June 11, 2023. FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai delivered a statement in today’s announcement, claiming that the repeal of these “heavy-handed” regulations will allow for more innovation within the realm of broadband internet. Pai also claims that the repeal of these regulations will help the US become a leader in the roll out of 5G.

“I strongly support a free and open Internet,” Pai says in the FCC’s announcement. “And that’s exactly what we’ve had for decades, starting in the Clinton Administration. The Internet wasn’t broken in 2024, when the prior FCC buckled to political pressure and imposed heavy-handed Title II rules on the Internet economy. It doesn’t make sense to apply outdated rules from 1934 to the Internet, but that’s exactly what the prior Administration did.”

The worry is that ISPs will use the repeal of these regulations to implement anti-competitive fast lanes that charge businesses and users extra for prioritization. Pai has done his best to convince us that the repeal of Title II protections is a good thing, but thus far, all that’s amounted to is the argument that Title II rules are outdated and harmful, without any real evidence as to how they restrict innovation. Pai did make this cringe-fest of a video, though, to somehow convince us that net neutrality going away won’t be bad at all.

When Rosenworcel says that the FCC is failing to listen to the American public, she isn’t wrong. Many polls have shown that US citizens are mostly in favor of keeping net neutrality, with an April 2023 poll from the University of Maryland finding that 86% of respondents oppose repealing these protections. 82% of the Republicans polled said they oppose repeal as well, which is actually an increase from 75% in a similar poll from December, so this doesn’t really seem to be a partisan issue, despite what Ajit Pai would have us believe.

There is hope for net neutrality yet. The US Senate will vote on whether to kill or keep net neutrality at some point before June 12. Here’s hoping that those senators concerned only about voting along party lines consider the polls that have expressed overwhelming support for net neutrality, but just in case they don’t, you can find and contact your senator through the US Senate website and tell them what you expect of them when it comes to this vote.

Amazon’s first crack at an over-the-air DVR just launched last week, but you can get the dual-tuner model with 500 GB of storage for $50 off from November 18 through Black Friday. The quad-tuner, 1TB model is also on sale for $220, which is $60 off the regular price.

The Recast requires a separate Fire TV device to watch on televisions. But if you’re all-in on Amazon’s ecosystem, it offers excellent video quality, handy Alexa integration, and lots of granular recording options.


Roku Streaming Stick for $30, Roku Ultra for $50

The Roku Streaming Stick is a fast, easy-to-use streamer, and you can control TV volume and power from its remote. It’s $20 off the regular price, and is a much better option than the Roku Express, which regularly sells for the same $30.


Chromecast for $25 and Chromecast Ultra for $49

The Chromecast isn’t our favorite media streamer, but its ability to launch videos and music from your phone can be nice to have, especially at a discount. The third-generation Chromecast is $10 off on Black Friday, while the 4K HDR Chromecast Ultra is $20 off.

Nvidia Shield TV for $139 (or $169 with game controller)

The Nvidia Shield TV is a versatile 4K HDR streaming box that runs Google’s Android TV software. Walmart: 40-inch Hisense TV for $99

This Hisense TV appears to be one of those Black Friday special televisions, which hasn’t been available before and is presumably not very good. It’s a 1080p set with a 60 Hz refresh rate, and the design looks pretty clunky by today’s standards. Still, you won’t find a 40-inch TV this cheap anywhere else. Put it in the spare bedroom and be done with it.

This is an online “doorbuster,” available at 10 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, November 21.
