What to expect

WWDC 2023 will kick off with a special event keynote today, June 7, at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. This event will stream “directly from Apple Park” and be available to watch via Apple’s website, the Apple Developer app, the Apple TV app, and YouTube. Here’s how to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote:

Rounding out today, Apple will hold its annual Platforms State of the Union address. This will take place at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET on June 7 and will be available via the Apple Developer app and Apple Developer website.

Throughout the week, Apple will debut a variety of different sessions and labs for developers. These will give developers “unprecedented access to Apple engineers and designers,” the company says.

Finally, on June 10 at 2.m. PT/5 p.m. ET, Apple will hold its Apple Design Awards presentation. You can view the finalists for the 2023 Apple Design Awards right here.

What to expect at WWDC 2023

At WWDC 2023 this year, we expect Apple to announce the future of its software platforms including iOS 15, watchOS 8, iPadOS 15, and more. There have been some rumors of new hardware, but last-minute leaks seem to downplay that new MacBook Pros will be announced.

Apple Silicon: What It Is, Benchmarks, Reviews, News, And More

What is Apple Silicon?

During its WWDC 2023 keynote, Apple officially confirmed its transition from Intel chips to its own Apple Silicon for the Mac. In addition to details for developers, Tim Cook announced that the first Mac with Apple Silicon would ship to consumers by the end of this year.

Apple M1

At its ‘One More Thing’ event in November, Apple officially announced its first Apple Silicon processor designed specifically for the Mac, dubbed the M1. The M1 chip features an eight-core design alongside a powerful Neural Engine and GPU, offering dramatic efficiency and performance improvements for the Mac.

With Apple controlling the processor in a Mac, it can offer significantly better software optimization than others like Intel. In the case of the Mac, this means that macOS 11 Big Sur is optimized specifically for the M1 processor. By creating the silicon themselves, Apple has much more control over how well macOS and a Mac hardware perform together. Even without touching on the technical specifications of the new M1 chip, the improved optimization in macOS should make for dramatic performance and reliability improvements.

Using Apple Silicon in the Mac also means that the Mac can now run iPhone and iPad applications. While developers can opt-out of this, it means that you’ll be able to find iPhone and iPad applications in the Mac App Store for the first time.

Rosetta 2 translation allows you to run apps made for Intel Macs on Apple Silicon, and sometimes apps perform better in Rosetta with Apple Silicon’s M1 than they do natively with Intel, Apple says.

Universal apps are apps built for Apple Silicon and Intel processors and are downloadable from the Mac App Store or from the web.

When it announced the new M1 processor during the special “One more thing” event from Apple Park, Apple touted that it’s the “first chip designed specifically for the Mac.” It’s built using a 5-nanometer with 16 billion transistors, and Apple says it was designed “for Mac systems in which small size and power efficiency are critically important.”

As such, the M1 features industry-leading performance per watt. This is why the first Apple Silicon MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are able to offer such notable improvements in battery life compared to their Intel predecessors.

Apple Silicon’s M1 chip is an 8-core CPU with four high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. The high-performance cores each provide industry-leading performance for single-threaded tasks, and Apple says they are “the world’s fastest CPU cores in low-power silicon.”

Apple also says that the four high-efficiency cores deliver “outstanding performance at a tenth of the power.” In fact, the high-efficiency cores are so powerful themselves that they deliver similar performance to the dual-core Intel MacBook Air while being much more efficient.

In total, Apple says that the eight cores work together to provide “incredible compute power for the most demanding tasks and deliver the world’s best CPU performance per watt.”

M1 GPU Apple Silicon Neural Engine

The M1 chip also brings Apple’s industry-leading Neural Engine to the Mac for the first time. The M1 Neural Engine features a 16-core design that can perform 11 trillion operations per second. Apple has used the Neural Engine in the iPhone and iPad since the A11 processor was introduced in 2023. Neural Engine was something designed specifically for machine learning tasks like video analysis, voice recognition, artificial intelligence, photo scanning, and much more.

What’s next for Apple Silicon?

The M1 chip is just the beginning of a “new family of chips designed specifically for the Mac.” Again, the new M1 processor is designed specifically for lower-power machines where efficiency is especially important. Over the next two years, Apple will likely release new Apple Silicon chips for the iMac, Mac Pro, and higher-end MacBook Pros.

About a year ago, Apple caused a stir in the computing world by introducing Apple Silicon M1 chips for its MacBook lineup. It announced a 2-year plan to transition away from Intel chips, and it’s following through with the latest M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.

These groundbreaking chips were revealed at the Unleashed event and boast up to a 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 64GB of unified memory, ProRes acceleration, and industry-leading power efficiency. What does all this mean in practicality, and what’s the difference between M1 Pro and M1 Max? Keep reading for all the details about Apple’s M1 lineup.

What is the M1 Pro chip?

The successor of the M1 chip, the M1 Pro, is based on a 5nm architecture with 22.7 billion transistors, more than double the amount on M1. It features up to 10 CPU cores, including eight high-performance cores, for 70% faster performance than M1.

Further, M1 Pro has a GPU with up to 16 cores, eight more than M1, for 2x faster graphics. Coupled with a 16-core Neural Engine, a ProRes accelerator, and a powerful media engine, it lets you edit multiple instances of both 4K and 8K videos.

You can configure M1 Pro with up to 32GB of unified RAM, with up to 200GB/s of memory bandwidth, which is a 2x of M1 chip. M1 Pro supports up to two external displays.

What is the M1 Max chip? 

To complete the M1 family, the M1 Max is Apple’s largest chip yet, with 57 billion transistors and the same 10-core CPU and 16-core Neural Engine as the M1 Pro. The GPU can feature up to 32 cores. 

It also has an enhanced media engine and two ProRes accelerators, making it the ideal chip for anyone working with high-definition video.

Lastly, it offers up to 64GB of integrated RAM and doubles the memory interface of the M1 Pro with a bandwidth of up to 400 Gb/s. It also supports up to four external displays, so it is the ultimate choice for professionals working with games and graphics.

M1 Pro and M1 Max vs. M1 chip: What’s the difference?

The ARM-based M1 was Apple’s first custom chip for Macs. It proved faster than both Intel and AMD’s x86 processors while drawing far less power. Following that revolutionary move, Apple is taking a two-pronged approach with M1 Pro and M1 Max, the latest chips powering the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

What are the benefits of Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max chips?

CPU performance 

The M1 Pro and M1 Max’s new 10-core CPU with eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores delivers stunning performance. Apple has shared that compared to the latest 8-core PC laptop chip, M1 Pro and M1 Max deliver up to 1.7x more CPU performance at the same power level.

Moreover, they match the PC chip’s peak performance using up to 70 percent less power. This means that even the most demanding tasks, like high-resolution graphics and video editing, are a breeze.

GPU performance 

M1 Pro’s GPU can be configured up to 16-core and is up to 2x faster than M1. It’s also 7x faster than the integrated graphics on the latest 8-core PC laptop chip. 

Further, M1 Pro achieves greater performance while consuming up to 70 percent less power than a powerful discrete GPU for PC notebooks. At the same time, the M1 Pro can be configured with up to 32GB of fast unified memory, with up to 200GB/s of memory bandwidth, enabling creatives like 3D artists and game developers to do more on the go than ever before.

M1 Max takes this even further with a massive 32-core GPU for up to four times faster graphics performance than M1. The GPU delivers a similar performance to a high-end GPU in a compact pro PC laptop while consuming up to 40 percent less power. This means less heat is generated, the fans run quietly, and battery life is enhanced.

Media Engine with ProRes

Moreover, it has dedicated acceleration for the ProRes professional video codec. This allows playback of multiple streams of 4K and 8K ProRes video while using very little power. 

M1 Max takes it further with up to 2x faster video encoding than M1 Pro and two ProRes accelerators. Powered by this technology, the new MacBook Pro can transcode ProRes video in Compressor up to 10x faster than the previous-generation 16-inch MacBook Pro. That’s a fantastic step-up for video creators.

Apart from the impressive performance enhancements, the M1 Pro and M1 Max boast several other features that can take pro workflows to the next level:

The latest M1 Pro and M1 Max chips currently come exclusively on Apple’s all-new 2023 MacBook Pro. This beast of a device offers 14- and 16-inch display options with a new design that brings back many of the most-loved external features of earlier MacBook Pros with the mega internal power of the M1 Pro and M1 Max system-on-a-chip architectures. 

Apple has parted ways with the Touch Bar in favor of the more user-friendly physical function buttons. It’s also brought back the SDXC card slot and an HDMI port that will keep graphics and video professionals happy.

On the battery life front, Apple says the 14-inch MacBook Pro (2024) is rated to deliver up to 17 hours of video playback on a single charge, while its 16-inch counterpart delivers up to 21 hours of video playback.

You can charge the new MacBook Pro with a MagSafe charging cable with MagSafe 3, unlike the existing MacBook Pro models that offer charging via USB-C. However, you can still use Thunderbolt 4 for charging using a USB Type-C cable.

Moreover, the display features a notch housing a 1080p webcam. This design change helps reduce bezels and increase screen real estate.

As for audio, there’s a powerhouse six-speaker sound system with two tweeters and four force-canceling woofers for audio. There is also Dolby Atmos and spatial audio support for a superior surround sound experience. 

Overall, it’s one of the most significant updates to the Mac lineup in recent years. It’s the best device for power users in creative fields like filmmaking or game development.

At first glance, Microsoft has knocked the new Surface Pro out of the park. Coming hot on the heels of the Surface Laptop, the tablet-that’s-a-notebook (and which mustn’t be called the Surface Pro 5, oh no) could’ve been overshadowed by its Alcantara-clad clamshell sibling. Instead, Microsoft has gone down the wishlist of existing owners and ticked all the boxes. Well, all apart from one.

The addition of 7th-generation Core processors is a welcome one. The fact that Microsoft has done so, but managed to make the Core i5 fanless is even more appreciated. What I’m most pleased to see, however, is the addition of a 4G LTE option.

Every Surface Book has WiFi and Bluetooth, of course, but later on Microsoft will add an LTE configuration. That will mean you can get online via its own 4G LTE radio, rather than hunting down a public hotspot. Microsoft hasn’t talked about how much data will cost – my guess is that the Surface Pro LTE will support being added to an existing cellular plan as an add-on device, at a bare minimum – or whether it’ll offer daily, weekly, or monthly subscription-free data bundles you can enable at-will. Those details will come closer to the tablet’s release.

Certainly, there are workarounds to integrated LTE. Apple, which has long resisted calls to build a cellular modem into MacBooks, argues that systems like its easy tethering – that allow you to switch on your iPhone’s hotspot function remotely, from the menu of your Mac – make onboard WWAN unnecessary. Samsung offers something similar with Samsung Flow, most recently on the Galaxy Book 2-in-1.

Having mobile hotspot on your smartphone is certainly useful, but I’m wary of relying too completely on that one device for my connectivity. It’s all too easy to find yourself chewing rapidly through your phone’s battery as it keeps other devices online. Plus, it’s simply more power-efficient to have an onboard 4G modem rather than be wirelessly connecting to another one in a separate device.

Maybe, indeed, it’ll salve the ongoing frustration that Microsoft still hasn’t addressed with the Surface Book and its keyboard. I don’t really begrudge Microsoft the extra $99 it’ll extract from those wanting the Surface Pen. That’s no longer being included in the box, unlike what was the case with previous Surface Pro models.

No, what still feels awkward is Microsoft continuing to charge if you want the Type Cover keyboard. That’ll set you back $129. Meanwhile, Samsung’s new Galaxy Book may not be perfect, but the Windows 10 2-in-1 does at least come with both the keyboard folio and the S Pen stylus in the box at no extra charge.

Selling separately, Microsoft has previously pointed out, makes packaging easier. It allows the company to offer a range of color combinations – you can have the Surface Laptop-matching Alcantara Type Cover in Platinum, Burgundy, and Cobalt Blue – which might make bundles needlessly complex, after all. Nonetheless, it does feel like a tax on anyone who wants to use the Surface Pro as a notebook replacement.

Microsoft used to sneak around that, just, by referring to earlier Surface Pro models as tablets. This time around, however, it’s calling the Surface Pro “the most versatile laptop” it has ever come up with. I don’t know about you, but to me a laptop has a keyboard out of the box.

Vision Pro could be the AR/VR industry’s iPhone-like moment, and Apple hopes the underlying xrOS operating system will become its next major software platform.

The first version of the Vision Pro includes these key features:

Front display: Called EyeSight, this is a front-facing screen that projects your eyes as captured by the internal cameras to others around you. A blurred mode alerts others you’re deeply immersed in AR.

Mindfulness session: Create a private sense of calm.

Environments: These are like screen savers for the AR background. You can use these sceneries to calm down, focus, inspire and more.

Bluetooth accessories: Magic Trackpad and Magic Keyboard are supported for those who want to enter text or navigate the user interface using the old century method.

FaceTime: You can conduct group calls on FaceTime in AR, and participants’ video windows are correctly sized relative to one another.

Photos: Your environment dims around you, bringing focus to your colorful photos and videos. Panoramas expand and wrap around you in AR.

Camera: This is your first 3D camera. letting you feel like you’re part of the action. You just press a button to capture a spatial image or video.

Spatial cinema: You can adjust the screen to the perfect size, and Vision Pro automatically dims the surroundings. You can watch movies with spatial audio, use the Environments feature to dial in soothing environments to enjoy movies in. Vision Pro can even render 3D movies like in movie theaters.

Games: More than 100 Apple Arcade games will be playable on Vision Pro from day one, with full controller support.

Use as Mac display: Just look at your Mac and then place its screen anywhere you want in AR, giving you a full 4K display.
