Suggested December 2023 Are You Waiting For The Iphone 14?

It wasn’t too long ago that, every other year, we’d get an “S” variant for Apple’s iPhone. It was a very, very obvious way to tell the world that this was an “iterative” update. Not that that’s a bad thing, mind you. Not by any means. But, now, at a glance, it would appear that Apple’s moved away from that plan of attack.

But that’s not really the case, right? For those who keep tabs on this sort of thing, we know that the iPhone 13 isn’t so much a huge update compared to the iPhone 12 as it is a pretty minimal uptick in features and design. Again, not a bad thing! It’s just how it is.

This year is a little different, though. If you’ll recall, there have been rumors of an iPhone adopting a punch-hole design for quite some time now. And, more recently, we started to hear that the iPhone 14 would be the handset to welcome this change. Things got interesting when a leak showed us what the iPhone 14 might look like, with its notch-less hardware, no camera bump, and more.

It’s a lot of changes! And when you take into account that there are a lot of iPhone users out there who would like to see the notch go away, the iPhone 14 is probably a very bright spot in the future. And maybe even a reason to just go ahead and skip this year’s iteration of the popular smartphone and wait it out.

But, this is a familiar argument. A very familiar train of thought. Apple is going to keep releasing newer, better iPhones as the years trudge along. If you wait now, you could just keep waiting “forever.”

I’ll admit, I was on the fence with an upgrade this year. I don’t know why, maybe it was the fact that this year just felt truncated in just about every single way, but it genuinely felt like I just bought the iPhone 12 Pro. Plus, I really like the Pacific Blue. But, the new Sierra Blue definitely caught my eye, and after Apple’s event wrapped up I was leaning more towards an upgrade after all. What sold me is the fact I’m on a yearly upgrade plan anyway, so I had to fork over just $35 to upgrade and get a new iPhone.

This refresh does feel different because of the iPhone 14-sized shadow looming over it. If these latest rumors are to be believed, the iPhone 14 is going to be the hardware redesign a lot of people have been waiting for. Titanium hardware, no camera bump, the hole-punch front-facing camera (which means even more changes to the TrueDepth Camera).

Then again, if you don’t follow any rumors or give any credence to leaks, then all there really is to consider this year is if there’s enough in the iPhone 13 to warrant an upgrade from whatever smartphone you’re currently using. And that’s really what it should come down to, right?

Where do you stand with the iPhone 13 this year? Have you already pre-ordered? Are you waiting for the reviews to fall in? Or are you skipping this year entirely in favor of next year’s model?

Iphone 14 Vs Iphone 14 Pro: Which Should You Buy In 2023?

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro represent Apple’s latest and greatest devices. The decision between choosing an iPhone 14 model, however, can be tricky. The iPhone 14 Pro is obviously more powerful and capable, but you also have to factor in differences like pricing, battery life, and overall weight. Head below for a deep dive into the iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro: Screen sizes

For the first year ever, both the standard iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro are available in the same screen sizes. Regardless of which family you pick, you have your choice between a 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch screen. This is a major difference compared to the past two years, when the top-tier “Pro Max” was the only choice for those who wanted the largest 6.7-inch screen.

But with that in mind, there are some big differences in terms of the screen technology and features. Namely, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offer ProMotion display technology for smoother animations, the new Digital Island that replaces the notch, and the first-ever Always-On display.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s Always-On display enables the screen to show you your lock screen widgets, the time, and your wallpaper at all times. This is the first time Apple has ever implemented an Always-On display for the iPhone.

Meanwhile, the Digital Island brings a new level of interactivity in replacement of the notch. You can tap and hold to find more options and controls. The Dynamic Island can show things like album art for content in the Music app, controls for FaceTime, specific background activities, and more. The new Live Activities feature coming iOS 16 also integrates with the Dynamic Island, meaning you can see live notifications directly in the new screen area.

While those are the bigger differences between the displays, there are some other technical details as well. Here’s the full breakdown of the display technology inside the iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro.

Size and design

There are some notable differences in the design and dimensions of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro lineups, even though they share screen sizes. There are also differences between the materials used for each model, the weight, and more.

As you can see in the chart below, the rough dimensions of the respective iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models are the same. The biggest difference is the weight, with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max weighing noticeably more than the non-Pro counterparts. This is due to the heavier stainless steel edges, the larger camera modules (more on that in a bit), and the larger batteries.

Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

For the first year ever, Apple has split the performance between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. The iPhone 14 models are powered by an upgraded version of the A15 chip used last year (just with an added GPU core). The iPhone 14 Pro models use Apple’s newest A16 Bionic chip, which is Apple’s first 4nm processor.

We’re still waiting on the exact details on iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro performance. The fact of the matter is, however, that iPhone performance is already overkill for the majority of buyers nowadays.

Battery life

Battery life is a big factor when deciding which iPhone 14 to order. The battery stats from Apple can be a bit vague, but here’s what we know.

One of the biggest ways the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro differ is in terms of camera technology. The gap between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro is even bigger this year than before. Because of the new 48MP camera on the iPhone 14 Pro, the main camera uses quad-pixel technology to adapt to the photo being captured.

Both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro also feature a new Photonic Engine. Apple describes this as a new computational photography feature that offers a “giant leap for mid- to low-light performance in photos across all cameras through a deep integration of hardware and software.”

On the iPhone 14, Apple says you can expect improved mid- to low-light performance of up to 2x on the Ultra Wide camera, 2x on the TrueDepth camera, and 2.5x on the Main camera.

On the iPhone 14 Pro, the benefit is even better: up to 2x on the Main camera, up to 3x on the Ultra Wide camera, up to 2x on the Telephoto camera, and up to 2x on the TrueDepth camera.

Here are some more technical details on the iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro camera systems:

Crash detection that can recognize when you’re in a car accident and call emergency services.

Satellite connectivity for reaching emergency services when you aren’t connected to a cellular or WiFi network.

Action mode for stabilizing video during fast-moving scenarios like running or other sports.

Ceramic Shield front for improved display durability

Included accessories

Citing environmental concerns, Apple is not including headphones or a charging brick in the iPhone 14 box this year. Here are some accessories you might consider picking up to help fill that gap and complement your new iPhone.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro: Which should you buy in 2023?

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro lineups are similar in many ways. This is especially true because of the screen size options. As I said at the start, you no longer have to spring for the most expensive iPhone in order to get the largest display. For many people, the screen size is one of the deciding factors in picking an iPhone.

The camera upgrades offered by the iPhone 14 Pro vs the iPhone 14 are the biggest things to consider. If you’re someone who is constantly taking videos and pictures with your iPhone, these changes are going to bring a significant improvement to the end result. The combination of the new computational photography features and the 48MP sensor is huge. This is the first time in years that Apple has increased the megapixel count of the iPhone’s main camera.

Image via Brian Tong

My personal suggestion is to look at how you use your iPhone and look at the price differences between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. Do you take enough pictures and videos to really benefit from the new camera features? Are you consistently taking pictures and videos of something in your life that’s really important? If so, the iPhone 14 Pro is the way to go.

But if not, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are still incredible phones. The camera hardware is as impressive as in years past, and you benefit from some of the additional computational photography technology. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are also notably cheaper than the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Do Iphone 13 Cases Fit The Iphone 14?

If you just picked up your new iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, you might be wondering if your existing iPhone 13 case will fit the iPhone 14. Unfortunately, Apple has made enough changes to this year’s iPhone 14 models that you’ll need to buy new cases alongside your new iPhone this year. Here are the details.

Will iPhone 13 cases fit the iPhone 14?

As you can see in the table below, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are very, very close in terms of their overall dimensions. The biggest difference is that the iPhone 14 is 0.01-inches thicker than the iPhone 13. Realistically, this is not a big enough difference to impact case compatibility most of the time.

There’s another very minor change, though: Apple has ever-so-slightly shifted the location and size of the power button and volume buttons this year. More so than the changes in dimensions, this will be what breaks the compatibility between iPhone 13 cases and the iPhone.

For these reasons, the safest bet is to go ahead and splurge on a new case that’s designed exactly for the iPhone 14. Here are some of the most popular iPhone 14 cases we’re seeing so far:

Will iPhone 13 Pro cases fit the iPhone 14 Pro?

Unfortunately, the situation only gets worse if you’re upgrading from an iPhone 13 Pro to an iPhone 14 Pro. There aren’t huge changes to the dimensions, but they are bigger changes than the non-Pro models.

As you can see, Apple has increased the height, decreased the width, and increased the thickness of the iPhone 14 Pro in comparison to the iPhone 13 Pro. All of these differences add up to mean that your iPhone 13 Pro cases definitely won’t fit your iPhone 14 Pro. Additionally, the iPhone 14 Pro’s camera bump is even larger and wider than before.

Apple has also shifted the iPhone 14 Pro’s power button ad volume buttons, for yet another reason your cases won’t work.

Will iPhone 13 Pro Max cases fit the iPhone 14 Pro Max?

The iPhone 14 Pro Max situation is pretty similar to the iPhone 14 Pro. While the height of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the same, the new model is both narrower and thicker than its predecessor. The camera bump is also larger and the volume buttons and power button have been slightly relocated.

For all of these reasons, you’ll need a new case for your iPhone 14 Pro Max if you plan on upgrading this year.

iPhone 14 Plus cases

Last but not least, there’s the iPhone 14 Plus. Given that this is an all-new model in Apple’s lineup, you’ll definitely need a new case for this one. While you could technically use an iPhone 13 Pro Max case, the fit would be far from precise due to significant differences in thickness as well as the size of the camera bump.

Ios 14: Here Are 7 Ways Iphone Is Improving As A Camera

Although Apple didn’t mention it during WWDC 2023 last month, iOS 14 brings improvements and new options to the iPhone camera. This includes faster shots, an option to use the volume up button to control Burst Mode, and even QuickTake available for older iPhones. Read on as we detail what’s new for the iPhone camera on iOS 14.

Faster Shots

What’s more important to a portable camera than being able to quickly take photos of unique moments?

With iOS 14, Apple says opening the Camera app and taking the first picture is up to 25% faster, while taking two or more pictures is 90% faster. For iPhones with Portrait Mode, photos are taken up to 15% faster.

These changes are automatically enabled to all devices running iOS 14, so you don’t need to change anything to benefit from these enhancements.

Prioritize Fast Shooting

While everyone can take pictures faster with iOS 14, the update includes a new option that makes this process even faster.

With the “Prioritize Fast Shooting” option available in the Settings app, the iPhone camera intelligently adapts image processing when you rapidly press the shutter button. iOS will take less time improving your shot, but you’ll have a better chance of capturing a specific moment.

Use Volume Up for Burst

Burst Mode allows users to take multiple photos in sequences, so they can choose only the best shots. A new option on iOS 14 lets you press the volume up button in the app Camera to take Burst photos. Pressing the volume down button with this option enabled starts a QuickTake recording on supported devices.

QuickTake and In-Camera Resolution Settings for older iPhone models

iPhone 11 models and the 2023 iPhone SE features QuickTake, which allows users to quickly record videos in the Camera app by simply holding the finger on the shutter button to start a video recording. QuickTake was only available for iPhone 11, but iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max owners can now use QuickTake with iOS 14.

There’s also a new “Video Format Control” toggle in the Camera settings that lets users change the video resolution in the Camera app when enabled. This was previously only available for iPhone 11, but now it works with all iPhone models that run iOS 14.

Mirror Front Camera

If you take a selfie with your iPhone, you’ll probably notice that the photo taken is different than what you see in the live preview. That’s because the Camera app shows you a mirrored preview, while the saved version is not.

With iOS 14, users can enable a new “Mirror Front Camera” option to save the mirrored photo just as you see while taking selfies.

Exposure Control

Another new option available with iOS 14 allows you to set and lock the exposure level for all photos and videos. That means you no longer have to swipe your finger on the screen to adjust the exposure level for each individual shot.

Unfortunately, this option is only available for iPhone XR and later.

Updated Night Mode

Apple hasn’t changed how iPhone 11’s Night Mode works, but the feature now uses the built-in gyroscope to help you keep your iPhone steady during a shot. You can also interrupt a Night Mode shot on iOS 14.

Apple hasn’t made major changes to the iOS Camera app this year, but these improvements certainly make the camera experience on iPhone even better. It’s also great that Apple has enabled options like QuickTake for older iPhone models.

Apple’s official silicone, leather, and clear MagSafe iPhone 14 cases remain a pricey but solid option, but there are also plenty of others worth taking a look at for your spring/summer 2023 refresh. Not everyone buys a new Apple handset every year and updating your case can be a great way to add new life to your device as well as to match up with your seasonal outfit/vibe. Head below for a closer look at our mid-year update on the best iPhone 14 cases for your most important piece of EDC.

Update 4/22/2023: Our roundup of the best iPhone 14 cases is getting a nice mid-year update today. While you’ll still find the original collection of options below, we will be highlighting some new releases that have launched in 2023 up top here alongside creating a list of the cases that remain in our regular rotation as some of the best options for your money.

Down below you’ll find a series of new reviews on the latest collections from CASETiFY, including crossover campaigns with the world-famous paper company from Scranton with the new Dunder Mifflin models, the Push-in line with interchangeable charms, and the adorable Mandalorian cases – the brand also unveiled the market’s “clearest and most protective Clear Case” for iPhone 14. All of these are detailed below in the CASETiFY section.

We also called Twelve South’s new SurfacePad for iPhone 14 “the best leather wallet folio around” in our hands-on review and OtterBox is lighting up your MagSafe connection with new neon-style Aneu iPhone 14 cases.

After over 6 months of testing, we thought it might also be helpful for some folks to be able take a quick look at some of the best iPhone 14 cases we still love after actually using them for several weeks and months at a time. It’s one thing to test them out for a few days or a week to get hands-on reviews up in order to help potential purchasers spend their money wisely, but it’s another thing entirely to actually put them through their paces for months in the streets, out in the woods, and elsewhere – some really hold up, some look even better over time, and some quickly fall to the wayside. Here’s our favorite of the best iPhone 14 cases this year at a glance:

For some folks, the first-party covers were and are always going to be the best iPhone 14 cases out there. This year’s Apple lineup, as you’ll know from our launch coverage, includes the usual clear cases as well as a host of fresh new colorways including Sunglow, Succulent, Lilac, Elderberry, Chalk Pink, Storm Blue, Midnight, and Red as well as options like Umber, Forest Green, Ink, Dark Cherry, Midnight, Golden Brown, Sequoia Green, Wisteria, and Orange on the leather side of things.

As of right now they are all available directly from Apple, but you will also find them in an official capacity over at Amazon if you don’t score one while you’re pre-ordering your new handset later this week.

Featured: SUPCASE and i-Blason

SUPCASE is now ready with its ultra-protective UB Pro cases for iPhone 14, delivering built-in kickstands that double as ring holders, alongside integrated screen protection, and a belt-clip holster that rotates 360 degrees. The UB Pro – “winner of CNET’s annual drop test with highest total feet” – is joined by the new UB Pro Mag that delvers the same rugged design but with MagSafe compatibility (here’s our hands-on review of the iPhone 13 model). These listings are going in and out of stock but will presumably remain available shortly.

The i-Blason models landing in our best iPhone 14 cases roundup are the Armorbox and the Ares, another pair of protective covers. Described as “unbeatable protection for $25,” the Armorbox features a portrait- and landscape-ready kickstand that doubles as a ring holder alongside built-in screen protection and 360-degree belt-clip holster. The Ares, on the other hand, delivers 20 feet of drop protection constructed of shock absorbing TPU and unbending polycarbonate. It has a clear backing to show off your new iPhone 14’s design alongside a built-in screen protector and raised edges to protect your display.

What is the best iPhone 14 case?

Everyone has different needs here, whether it’s an ultra-protective option, something more affordable, a folio-style leather wallet solution, or super minimalist clear iPhone 14 case. Needless to say, you’ll find the best iPhone 14 cases for all of the latest models listed above with even deeper dives available over at 9to5Toys (links to complete breakdowns for most of the new case collections are found in each section above). Most of our favorite brands have now launched new covers for Apple’s latest handsets and any of the stragglers will get added to our roundup of the best iPhone 14 cases as they go live.

Do iPhone 13 cases fit iPhone 14?

As you can see in our detailed breakdown, due to some small changes in the overall form-factor and the slight shift on the size and location of the power button for iPhone 14, the short answer is no. On the Pro side of things, the camera bump is even larger than previous-generation models alongside increased thickness and height, among other things. That means the iPhone 13 Pro cases almost certainly won’t fit the iPhone 14 Pro, at least not properly anyway.

Where do I get the best iPhone 14 case deals?

Well, 9to5Toys of course! The editors at 9to5Toys are scouring the internet everyday of the year for the best prices drop on Apple gear, smart home tech, and much more, including iPhone 14 case deals. Many of the best brands, including Spigen and others are already offering solid discounts and you’ll also find some exclusive discount codes for 9to5 readers scattered throughout this post with more inbound everyday.
