How To Avoid Internet Fraud, Scams, Phishing And Other Cybercrime

Internet fraud takes many forms, from retail websites that don’t deliver, to emails phishing for credit card or bank information, to tech support scams that take over your desktop, and everything in between. They share a common goal, however: extracting money or personal data from an unsuspecting user.

Three signs that a website is legitimate

Hopefully most websites you encounter are legitimate. There are two quick ways to tell, plus one that requires just a little more legwork.

In addition, some sites are independently certified to be secure by displaying trustmarks such as the Norton Secured Seal (managed by DigiCert), or the McAfee Secure certification (managed by TrustedSite). In China, an ICP (Internet Content Provider) license indicates that a site is registered with the government and allowed to operate.

3. Check the WHOIS information for website owners’ names and locations. As defined by the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) organization, WHOIS is not an acronym. It literally means, “who is responsible for a domain name or an IP address?”

3. If you want to find out whether a website is suspect, check the Better Business Bureau, Consumer Protection Agency, the Federal Trade Commission, or one of many Internet Fraud Detection lists for complaints or incidents of fraud.

1. Read the fine print on customer contracts, agreements, product information, and policies concerning returns. I know these contracts are long and tedious, but it’s worth your time if it saves you from being swindled.

2. Don’t be fooled by unbelievable prices. If it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t.

3. Read the customers’ reviews on that site, but don’t be misled by an implausible number of great reviews. Read the bad reviews first, and pay attention to what the customers say. If there are a lot of bad reviews, companies hire people to write hundreds of “fake” good reviews hoping that a windfall of goodness will cancel out the negative responses. Customers tend to complain more than compliment, so believe the complaints, especially if the reviewer provides contact information for further discussion.

4. Check the shipping options and the shipping company. If the company is unknown to you, or it does not provide tracking numbers or a reasonable shipping timeframe, find another vendor. Reputable businesses use well-known, reliable shipping contractors such as USPS, FedEx, UPS, and DHL, among others.

5. Always pay with a credit card, because you can challenge the charges if you’re scammed by an unethical company or if one of those companies sells your card number to a third party who makes a number of unauthorized charges. Most banks treat debit cards with the same courtesy. If your bank follows suit, then a debit card may be a safe alternative.

02 Beware of promotional links in emails

8. Hackers often hijack users’ address books and send out infected emails that appear to be from friends, family, or coworkers. Never open an email attachment unless you personally know the individual or organization sending the attachment, or you’re expecting an attachment resulting from a prior arrangement. Even if both of these are true, you should still call or email the sender and confirm that they intended to sent you an email attachment.

Egal, ob online oder offline: Kunden kaufen heute nicht automatisch bei Ihnen, weil Ihr Produkt das beste oder einzige seiner Art ist. Um neue Kunden zu akquirieren und bestehende Kunden zufrieden zu stellen, müssen Sie diesen einen Mehrwert bieten. Das Einkaufen in Onlineshops ist zwar ausgesprochen praktisch, befriedigt das Bedürfnis der Kunden nach sozialer Interaktion aber nicht. Diese Bedarfslücke schließen die Social Networks, in denen ein reger Austausch über Unternehmen, Shops und Produkte stattfindet. In Deutschland informieren sich laut der Connected Commerce 2024 Studie von DigitasLBi schon 87 Prozent der Befragten online (und zwar auch in den sozialen Medien), bevor sie anschließend ein Produkt im Ladengeschäft erwerben, 65 Prozent machen es umgekehrt.

Der klassische Einkaufsbummel mit Freunden ist also definitiv ein Auslaufmodell. Vielmehr werden soziale Netzwerke wie Facebook oder Pinterest nach Ideen durchstöbert und/oder verschiedene Anbieter auf Bewertungsportalen verglichen. Weil aber Einkaufen ohne soziale Interaktion nur halb soviel Spaß macht – suchen Kunden auch im Web nach dem gemeinschaftlichen Fun-Faktor. Wer seinen Kunden also ein „mehr“ an Spaß bieten kann, schafft genau den begehrten Mehrwert. Hier liegt das Potenzial von Social Shopping: durch die Integration von E-Commerce in Social Media oder durch Social Shopping-Portale (Plattformen, auf denen einzelne Produkte oder Händler bewertet, zu Favoriten erklärt, mit anderen geteilt und von diesen ein Feedback eingeholt wird, der Kauf selbst ist nicht die wichtigste Aktivität) wird der Einkaufsbummel erfolgreich in die digitale Welt verlegt.

Generell gilt: Machen Sie das digitale Einkaufen zum Erlebnis, das Spaß macht – und Sie werden davon profitieren. Ob kleiner Handwerksbetrieb oder großes Handelsunternehmen – wer jetzt den sozialen Aspekt in seine digitalen Vertriebskonzepte involviert, und teilen, bewerten und „gefällt mir“-Angaben ermöglicht, erschließt künftige Absatzpotenziale. Immerhin 28 Prozent der befragten Deutschen haben in der DigitasLBi-Studie angegeben, mindestens einmal einen Kauf mit anderen geteilt zu haben, 14 Prozent davon auch öfter. 68 Prozent waren im Monat vor der Befragung zumindest einmal auf Facebook aktiv, 14 Prozent auf Twitter und 24 Prozent auf Google+.

Ob Sie dafür auf Social Shopping-Portale zurückgreifen oder Shopping-Möglichkeiten direkt in Ihre Social Media-Profile integrieren, hängt von etlichen Faktoren ab, die Sie idealer Weise im Team mit dem Vertrieb, dem Marketing und Ihren Social Media-Verantwortlichen abstimmen. Ermitteln Sie, wo sich Ihre Zielgruppe höchstwahrscheinlich aufhält und planen Sie auch den zu erwartenden Arbeitsaufwand für Ihre Social Shopping-Aktivitäten ein. Nicht alle Social Shopping-Möglichkeiten eignen sich beliebig für jedes Unternehmen. Doch welche können Sie aktuell überhaupt nutzen?

Unikate und Schnäppchen – Social Shopping im deutschsprachigen Raum

Amerikanische Unternehmen wie Facebook, Twitter und Co. testen neue Features wie ihre Shopping-Apps in der Regel erst im Heimatland, bevor sie diese in Europa launchen. Doch Deutschland und Österreich sind keineswegs Entwicklungsländer, wenn es um Social Shopping geht. Zwar steckt der Einkauf via Social noch in den Kinderschuhen, doch Social Shopping-Portale sind auch hierzulande bereits seit mehreren Jahren ein fester Bestandteil des E-Commerce.

Im Unterschied zu ‘normalen’ Onlineshops bieten Social Shopping-Portale die Möglichkeit, mit Freunden zu interagieren – oder stellen die Social Media-Komponente sogar in den Vordergrund. Die junge österreichische Plattform trendley beispielsweise bietet den Nutzern an, sich im „Creator“ schicke Outfits zusammenzustellen und diese dann mit Freunden zu teilen. Digitale Mund-zu-Mund-Propaganda, die nachhaltiger als so manch großangelegte Werbekampagne wirken dürfte, weil wir unseren Freunden (und deren Empfehlungen) eher vertrauen, als einem Unternehmen.

Auf DaWanda können Produkte und Shops von den Kunden bewertet, als Favoriten gespeichert und an Freunde empfohlen werden. Zusätzlich hilft ein Geschenkefinder, für jede Person und jeden Anlass das perfekte Geschenk zu finden.

Auf edelight müssen Produkte gar nicht gelistet sein, um empfohlen zu werden. Das Portal setzt auf seine Kunden als Trendscouts: nach dem Motto „Shoppen, Stöbern, Schwatzen“ können diese Produkte über drei verschiedene Wege weiterempfehlen.

Wichtigste Erkenntnis: Bei allen erfolgreichen Social Shopping-Portalen geht es nicht um die Unternehmen, sondern um die Kunden und deren Empfehlungen. Um von Social Shopping zu profitieren, brauchen Sie sich also nicht überlegen, welche Trends oder Produkte Sie anbieten oder verbessern können. Überlegen Sie dafür, wie Sie zufriedene Kunden erreichen, die Sie gerne weiterempfehlen – und wie Sie Ihre Produkte zum Eyecatcher machen, der gerne geteilt wird. Für Social Shopping gelten also die selben Regeln, wie für alle anderen Social Media-Aktivitäten.

Heute San Francisco, morgen Berlin – Social Shopping kommt (nur wann?)

Wer die Entwicklungen in den USA und Asien auf dem Schirm hat, weiß, was früher oder später auch in Europa auf uns zu kommt. Für den Mega-Trend Social Shopping gilt: alle großen sozialen Medien wollen kurz- bis mittelfristig direkte Kaufmöglichkeiten in ihren Netzwerken anbieten. Händler mit Social Selling-Ambitionen müssen künftig nicht mehr nach passenden Portalen für ihre Branche fahnden, sondern wählen einfach die zum Unternehmen, seinen Produkten und Dienstleistungen passenden Social Media-Plattformen aus und offerieren ihre Produkte dort.

Zudem spielt sich das Social Shopping der Zukunft verstärkt auf dem Smartphone ab. Immer mehr Nutzer gehen mobil ins Web – und sie werden nicht jedes Mal zum Laptop oder PC wechseln, um ein Produkt tatsächlich zu kaufen. Vor allem, weil auch die sozialen Medien einfach per App auf dem Smartphone verfügbar sind. Die Integration von Kauf-Buttons in die Apps der Social Networks bedeutet laut einem aktuellen White Paper zum Thema Social Shopping von productsup mehr Bequemlichkeit für die Kunden und, wenn es richtig gemacht wird, mehr Umsatz für die Unternehmen. Pinterest: der Vorreiter

Obwohl Pinterest nur über eine vergleichsweise ‘kleine’ Reichweite von 100 Millionen aktiven Usern pro Monat verfügt, hat die digitale Pinnwand beim Social Shopping die Nase vorn. Anfang Juni 2024 gab das Netzwerk bekannt, dass es nun möglich sei, verkäufliche Pins zu erstellen – einen Monat später gab es davon schon 30 Millionen . Vorerst nur für den US-amerikanischen Markt gibt es neben dem roten „Pinnen“-Button und einen blauen für „Kaufen“. Die Bezahlung läuft über Stripe und die Paypal-Tochter Braintree, zwei externe Bezahldienste. Dank Kooperationen  mit den Shop-Software-Unternehmen Shopify und Demandware ist es auch für kleine und mittelgroße Unternehmen sehr einfach, über Pinterest zu verkaufen, wenn ihre Onlineshops diese Software bereits nutzen.

Durch die Integration mit den Shop-Systemen verschwindet der Kauf-Button von selbst, wenn das Produkt, das ein Nutzer an seine Pinnwand gepinnt hat, ausverkauft ist. Und es wird nicht pro Kauf sondern nur bei Werbung für die zu verkaufenden Sachen gezahlt . 2014 wurde das Netzwerk sogar vom US-Magazin PC Mag unter die Top 3 der Social Shopping Portale gewählt. Natürlich ist deswegen die Grundregel des Social Shopping, Empfehlungen zu generieren, nicht außer Kraft gesetzt. Aber wenn Sie richtig gutes Bildmaterial und aktuelle Daten zu ihren Produkten liefern können, sollten Sie Pinterest in puncto Shopping unbedingt im Auge behalten.

Instagram: die Hoffnungsvolle

Instagram hat erst vor Kurzem seine Werbe-API für alle Unternehmen geöffnet – und damit einen langgehegten Wunsch der Werbetreibenden erfüllt. Als besonders junge Plattform (37 Prozent der Nutzer sind zwischen 18 und 20 Jahre alt) mit einer Reichweite von 300 Millionen aktiven Nutzern pro Monat bietet Instagram eine geradezu ideale Plattform, um diese Zielgruppe via Werbung und Social Shopping zu erreichen. Zudem verfügt Instagram über die Social Analytics der Mutterfirma Facebook – das macht auch die Werbe-API attraktiv. Doch so vorsichtig das Netzwerk mit Werbung war (und ist), so vorsichtig geht es auch mit Thema Kauf-Button um. Tests laufen seit geraumer Zeit, doch über den konkreten Zeitpunkt einer breiten Einführung kann hier nur spekuliert werden. Setzen Sie bei Ihren Instagram-Aktivitäten daher auf nicht gleich auf neue Technik, sondern auf bewährte Strategien: zufriedene Kunden, die Bilder der bei Ihnen gekauften Dinge veröffentlichen.

Facebook: der Gigant

Facebook ist mit 1,49 Milliarden aktiven Nutzer pro Monat weltweit der Social Media-Platzhirsch. Seit etwas mehr als einem Jahr testet Facebook auch, wie sich „Jetzt Kaufen“-Buttons in die Plattform integrieren lassen.

In Kooperation mit Shopify wurde erst im September 2024 eine neue Shop-Funktionalität für die Profilseiten gelaunched, die sowohl am Rechner als auch mobil funktioniert. Das größte Kapital von Facebook sind allerdings Unmengen von Daten und seine ausgefeilten Datenanalyse-Tools, die es ermöglichen, die Zielgruppe noch besser und genauer kennen zu lernen. Doch Facebook scheint (noch) nicht wirklich Interesse daran zu haben, auch zum weltgrößten Social Shopping-Marktplatz zu werden: Die Bemühungen in diese Richtung werden eher zögerlich vorangetrieben. Der Social Media-Riese könnte eher verlockt sein, zunächst seine Anzeigenformate auszubauen, bevor man sich konsequent dem Thema Kauf-Button annimmt. Damit bleibt Facebook vorerst der Ort, an dem sich Kunden über ihre Erfahrungen mit Produkten, Dienstleistungen und Unternehmen austauschen, die sie an anderer Stelle gemacht haben.

Die Zukunft des Social Shopping bleibt spannend

Derzeit hat es nicht den Anschein, als würden die Grenzen zwischen Social Media und Social Shopping in naher Zukunft völlig verschwimmen. Zwar gibt es Netzwerke wie Pinterest, die sich zum Ziel gesetzt haben, das Einkaufen zu einem festen Feature für ihre Nutzer zu machen, doch die Mehrheit der Social Media-Netzwerke will dies nicht in dieser offensichtlichen Form betreiben. Umgekehrt steht die soziale Interaktion bei einigen Social Shopping-Portalen zukünftig wohl noch mehr im Mittelpunkt als bisher, aber der Zweck eines solchen Portals bleibt weiterhin „verkaufen“. Spannend bleibt die Entwicklung trotzdem, zum einen aufgrund des großen potenziellen Marktes, zum anderen, weil Social Shopping für fast jede Zielgruppe einen Mehrwert generiert. Verlassen Sie sich also am besten auf etwas, das sich wahrscheinlich nie ändern wird: auf das Bedürfnis Ihrer Kunden, nicht nur einzukaufen, sondern auch mit Freunden darüber zu sprechen. With Apple’s 2023 WWDC in the rear-view mirror, anticipation can start building back up for the rest of the year and new Apple hardware. As is generally the case, Apple shows off its newest software updates in the summer and releases new hardware in the fall. Along with that comes many questions of when it’s a good time to buy Apple products. In this Apple shopping guide, we’ll take a look what you can feel comfortable with buying today and what you should hold off on.

MacBook Air/Pro

What you should do: buy now

Deciding whether to buy a MacBook Air/Pro now is increasingly difficult. Recent 2023 updates have made all of Apple’s laptop lineup much better, including a base storage of 256GB. Eliminating the loathed butterfly keyboard has also made Apple’s 2023 laptop lineup well worth considering.

All of that said, Apple’s decision to move from Intel chips to “Apple Silicon” is incredibly enticing. Yes, there are many outstanding questions about how Apple Silicon will perform. If it runs anything like the iPhone and iPad processors Apple manufactures, it could be an exceptionally strong performer.

Better battery life and overall performance could be just two of the many reasons Apple Silicon could be worth the wait. However, if you can’t wait for a new computer or still want to run Windows on a Mac, you should pick something out of Apple’s current lineup. The MacBook Air and the 13″ and 16” MacBook Pro computers are really outstanding machines in their own right. The $999 price on the MacBook Air is particularly attractive, and while Apple Silicon looks great, the current Pro and Air models perform exceptionally well.


What you should do: wait

There is little question you should hold off on purchasing a new iMac right now. The current iMac model is well overdue for a redesign. There is no answer as to when Apple will release a new iMac or if they will wait for Apple Silicon, but if you can wait, you should.

If you are looking to buy an iMac in the next six months, wait.

When anyone asks if now is a good time to buy an iPhone, the answer depends on at what point in the calendar year the question is asked. If history repeats itself, Apple will launch a new iPhone (more like multiple iPhones) in the next sixty days give or take (as of this writing).

As is generally the case, they will have faster processors, improved cameras and increased battery life among other new features. It’s also likely that new iPhones will be priced similarly, if not identically, to the current models. The best thing you can do right now is wait. On top of everything else, the upcoming “iPhone 12” is likely to be Apple’s first iPhone with 5G connectivity.

Existing iPhone models like the iPhone 11 series will drop in price shortly after the new iPhone is released. Now, if you were asking this question in January, the answer might look entirely different. This close to the fall season, wait, wait, wait.


The iPad Pro, in particular, which was refreshed in March 2023, is a particularly difficult decision. If you follow the Apple news world closely, you know there are always rumors about upcoming refreshes and the iPad Pro is no different.

That said, the inclusion of the A12Z Bionic Chip, Pro display, Pro cameras and LiDAR Scanner makes it an incredibly enticing device. Throw in the Magic Keyboard, and the iPad Pro has never been closer to a computer. Will Apple release another update to their already existing update in the same year? That’s unlikely, so go ahead and grab one.

The $329 seventh-generation iPad is a solid buy for right now. Yes, it comes with a slightly underpowered A10 processor, but it’s great for families, kids and just general entertainment.

For the iPad Air and iPad Mini 5, both refreshed in early 2023, it’s a little harder to answer. It’s very possible both of these could be updated before the end of the year, so waiting until September/October seems perfectly reasonable.


What you should do: buy now

The company’s announcements at WWDC shows that with iOS 14, AirPods will get even smarter. Things like optimizing charging and, in the case of the AirPods Pro, something of a surround-sound effect, are releasing in the fall. For now, there is no reason to hold off on any AirPods purchase.

Both the “regular” AirPods and AirPods Pro are unlikely to be refreshed this year. Even so, any changes are likely to be incremental at best, so nothing that would have you kicking yourself for purchasing early.

Apple Watch

What you should do: wait

Yet again, we’re stuck looking at an Apple product that is incredibly easy to recommend but hard to say yes to right now.

The Apple Watch Series 5 is a fantastic smartwatch and easily the best in the category. There is a good chance Apple could announce a new watch at the same time as a new iPhone later this year. The good news is that the release of any new Apple Watch would lead to a price drop for the series 5, which could be yet another reason to wait. Every Apple Watch from the Series 3 on will get WatchOS 7, which includes sleep tracking.


Deciding when to buy a new Apple product has always been a juggling act. It has always been a discussion of how much longer you can wait for a product refresh. While Apple seems to be on an internalized calendar for their refreshes, they can just as easily change things up. Don’t forget that if you are a student, you can get discounts on Apple products, so if you really need something now, do not wait. Buy with confidence that any Apple product you purchase will get both hardware and software support for years.
