Suggested January 2024 Check Out Apple’s Newest Airpods Features

Apple has plenty of new AirPods features ready for your enjoyment, all you need to do is install iOS 15 and other software updates on your Apple devices. Here are all of them in one place.

Let’s check out together all the new capabilities that are available to AirPods owners by updating to Apple’s newest software updates, listed in no particular order.

New AirPods features in iOS 15 and other Apple OS updates

The following new capabilities for AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max are available with iOS 15, iPadOS 15, tvOS 15, watchOS 8 and macOS 12 Monterey.

Announce notifications with Siri

Aside from announcing your incoming calls like before, Siri on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 can also announce your incoming notifications. With the feature turned on, the smart assistant automatically announces incoming notifications in your ear. You can elect to have only time-sensitive incoming notifications announced or both regular and time-sensitive ones.

This works on the second-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max in US English.

For those wondering, time-sensitive notifications are a new kind of notification available to developers that can break through system controls such as Notification Summary and Focus. You can turn off the ability for time-sensitive notification interruptions in Settings.

Announce reminders

The Siri smart assistant can now announce your due reminders when you’re wearing any AirPods model or Beats headphones powered by the Apple H1 chip.

Conversation boosting

As a result, this accessibility feature makes it easier for folks with mild hearing issues to follow along in face-to-face conversation. Conversation Boost is accessible to anyone wishing to use it by pressing the volume slider in Control Center.

The original and second-generation AirPods are unsupported by Conversation Boost.

Find your AirPods with iPhone disconnected

The Find My network now supports AirPods Pro and Max, tying them to your Apple ID.

This lets you receive a separation alert when you forget to take your AirPods with you, as well as use the Find My app to find misplaced or stolen earbuds. You’ll first get an approximate location of your missing earbuds, with the Find My app showing you their last known location, until you get closer. This works even when your AirPods are disconnected from their iPhone, which wasn’t possible before. So what kind of dark magic is this?

It’s quite simple, honestly.

Just like AirTags, AirPods ping nearby devices via Bluetooth. If anyone with an iOS device comes within Bluetooth range, their device picks up the signal and reports the refreshed AirPods location to the Find My network. Once you do get within the Bluetooth range of your AirPods, you can play that high-pitched sound like your normally would and locate them.

Because this feature depends on crowdsourcing, it has its limitations. While the Find My network comprises hundreds of millions of Apple devices, you only need one of them to pass by your lost AirPods for this to work. Conversely, you may find the reported location useless or unreliable if you lost the earbuds- somewhere in the woods or a similarly remote location with very slim chances of having other Apple users passing by nearby.

Spatial audio comes to M1 Macs

With macOS Monterey, you can get the multidimensional experience afforded by Apple’s spatial audio feature. Previously limited to iPhone and iPad, this brings a theater-like faux surround sound experience with your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max connected to a Mac.

Spatial audio works on Apple silicon Macs and is unsupported by Intel-based models. The original and second-generation AirPods are also unsupported.

Spatial audio on Apple Music, now with dynamic head tracking

In July 2023, Apple Music launched support for spatial audio and lossless audio.

Spatial audio applies various filters and effects to an Apple Music song encoded using the Dolby Atmos multi-channel codec in order to simulate a 360-degree soundscape, with sounds appearing to come all around you. It works better on some tracks than the others, but one feature was missing from the original announcement: Dynamic head tracking.

Thankfully, the Music app in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 has picked up support for dynamic head tracking. Start playing a Dolby Atmos track and rotate your head or walk around the room to hear the difference for yourself. With dynamic head tracking, the sound field stays mapped to your device. You get to hear the surround sound channels in the right place no matter how you turn your head or move your iPhone.

This feature is only supported on the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

You will also need at least an iPhone 7 or third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro or 11-inch iPad Pro or third-generation iPad Air or sixth-generation iPad or fifth-generation iPad mini or later.

Why some features don’t work on original AirPods

The reason for this is not planned obsolescence or a similar nefarious scheme on Apple’s part.

Apple generally has a certain chipset in mind when developing features—that’s why capabilities like Live Text only work on devices with the Apple A12 Bionic chip, for example.

How To Check Airpods Battery Life

AirPods have quickly risen as one of the most popular choices for Apple users to listen to music, podcasts and movies. While using your AirPods, the last thing you want is for them to completely lose battery power while you are in the middle of an important call or exciting movie scene. Thankfully, your AirPods make it incredibly easy to track your battery life. Here are some simple ways you can check your AirPods’ battery life.

Easy as a Snap

One of the quickest and easiest ways to check battery life on your AirPods is to simply open the case. Whenever your AirPods are in the case next to your iPhone or iPad, open the case and look at your home screen. After a few seconds, you will see a prompt at the bottom of your screen showing you the battery status of your AirPods and the charging case.

On a Mac (iMac, MacBook/Pro) Adding Widgets

With the release of iOS 14, there are now two different methods to check your AirPods battery life using widgets. Swiping right from the home screen or lock screen as well as adding widgets to your home screen directly can help you look at battery life on your AirPods. For the home or lock screens, swipe right so you see your Today View.

1. Scroll to the bottom and tap on edit. When the available widgets appear, find the battery life widget and tap on “Add” or the “+” button so that it appears in the list.

2. You can drag the widget around so that it appears at the top, bottom or anywhere in the middle.

Note that the battery widget does not just show your AirPods battery life but also shows battery life for your iPhone and any other connected devices like Apple Pencil, Apple Watch, etc.

Adding the battery widget to your home screen is another quick and easy way to track battery life.

1. Start by touching and holding an empty area on your home screen until the apps start to jiggle.

2. When you see the “+” sign appear at the top of the upper left of your screen, tap on it.

3. Locate the battery widget. As you do, you will notice that you have multiple size options for the widget, so choose whichever one works best for you.

Ask Siri

When you need to check battery life but also need to stay hands free, Siri to the rescue. Say “Hey Siri” and ask, “How much battery life is left on my AirPods?” Alternatively, you can also say, “Hey Siri, AirPods Battery Life.” Most variations of these phrases will work and, with a successful request to Siri, will then read out or show your battery life onscreen.

AirPods Max No Paired Device

When all other methods fail or are not available, you can always check battery life on your AirPods from the charging case. Open up the case and check the color of the little LED light. If it shows as green, the AirPods have more than 50% of their charge available. If it shows amber, they are less than 50% charged.

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch does so much it can even show you battery life for your AirPods.

1. Start by swiping up from the bottom of the watch face to show the Control Center.

2. Inside the Control Center, tap on the battery percentage icon which initially starts by just showing the battery life of the Apple Watch.

3. If AirPods are connected, you will see their battery life underneath the Apple Watch percentage remaining.

Final Thoughts

Using any of the methods available on this list should keep you from ever finding yourself without AirPods battery life. Now all you need to do is become a master at stopping your AirPods from switching between devices automatically.

Top 4 Slack Alternatives You Should Check Out Now

When people think of team collaboration tools, they think of Slack. There’s good reason behind this: it has a lot of features, publicity and steam behind it. Though, just because this app is popular, doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for the job. In fact, you’d be surprised to know that there are a lot of alternatives to Slack out there that can compete with it on features as well as pricing and usability.

Which ones are the best? Let’s find out in this list of the top four Slack alternatives for team communication!

1. Mattermost

Mattermost is the open-source “host it yourself” answer to Slack. This tool has a lot of the features many have come to expect with Slack, specifically channels, support for file transfers, image support, private groups, private messaging and more.

Those looking for a way to save money and avoid the Slack subscription fee should try out this option, especially since Mattermost has an easy installer and even supports deployment via Docker.

2. Rocket.Chat

Rocket Chat, like Mattermost, is an open-source Slack replacement. It has all of the standard “Slack-like” features that most team-chat services have going for them. However, where this app stands out is what it adds to the mix. With Rocket Chat, users get the standard messaging groups, channels, file transfers, etc., but they also get voice messages and video conferences.

With Slack, free users are able to call two people at a time or fork out some cash to call an entire team. Since Rocket Chat is a self-hosted tool, there is no limit in pricing, and you’ll be able to video conference with an entire team free of charge. Those looking to get the standard Slack features with a little extra added in should seriously consider this app.

3. HipChat

HipChat is a freemium instant messaging service designed with teams and companies in mind. It supports groups, chat rooms, and one-on-one chat. Features also include chat history, inline images, drag and drop file sharing, and even bots.

The app is very prolific, with support for all of the major operating systems (even Linux), and has the added benefit of being self-hosted. Those looking to jump ship from Slack should check out HipChat, as the features it supports are very similar and should satisfy users of all kinds.

4. Flock

Flock is a freemium team instant messaging tool that prides itself on allowing teams to “get work done.” When it comes down to it, this app has the same features that pretty much all Slack competitors have. It gets better, though, because Flock also includes video conferences, to-do lists, code snippet sharing, reminders and more.

If you’ve tried the other three alternatives on this list, and you’re still not happy, give Flock a shot.

Honorable mention: Rvyer

Rvyer is yet another great alternative to Slack that we previously covered in MTE. It is almost a clone of Slack, without the price. You can use it for free for team communication, and it also comes with desktop and mobile apps that you can install and be reachable at all times.

Conclusion

When it comes to messaging for teams, Slack is the (almost) center of the universe, though it shouldn’t be. It’s over-priced for the features you get. Instead, consider jumping ship to something else. You’ll save money and gain a better user experience. I hope that with this list, finding an alternative to Slack will be very easy.

Would you switch from Slack? Tell us why or why not below!

Solution 10: Reorganize your play space or move the Xbox console to a different place

If you’re using multiple Xbox controllers and this issue comes up, try to rearrange your play space or move your Xbox console to a different location. As such, it’s important to may reduce this range by being aware of all objects, but especially those that use wireless technology that can cause interference.

Remove or relocate objects or devices like microwave ovens, cordless phones, wireless routers, metal dividers, shelves, doors, entertainment center cabinets, or chrome faceplates.

Your controller may have lost connection to the console. You can reconnect either with the console’s connect button or by using a USB-to-micro USB cable.

How to connect your controller using the console’s connect button:

Insert batteries

Press and hold the Xbox button to turn on the controller

Press and release the Connect button

In 20 seconds, press and hold the black connect button at the back of your controller till the Xbox button quickly flashes a few times. This indicates it is searching for your console and gives a solid light when connected.

How to connect your controller using a USB-to-micro USB-cable

If you have a micro-USB cable or the Play and Charge kit, connect your controller to your console by connecting the cable between the two devices. The controller also acts as a wired controller without inserting batteries.

If all the lights around the power button are green and the controller has four green, flashing lights, then the controllers are connected to the console.

Do the following:

Solution 13: Test the controller on an Xbox 360 console

To eliminate hardware issues, try the controller on an Xbox 360 console. If the problem persists, contact Xbox Support.

Solution 14: Replace your Xbox controller
