I think it’s a fairly horrible idea, but I do tend to believe it…
I dislike the idea for two reasons.
A Pro label for an iPhone is just a bit sillyFirst, just the idea of a ‘Pro’ iPhone is a little annoying.
Don’t misunderstand me. Modern iPhones are amazing devices. There was a time when such a powerful and flexible pocket computer would have stretched the credibility of science fiction stories, yet we now take them totally for granted.
For some, it’s budget: they own an iPhone, and can’t afford to buy another camera. For others, it’s convenience: they shoot when the mood takes them, and the iPhone is the camera that’s always with them, or it’s a discreet way to film. For some, there’s a direct financial inventive, in the form of either Apple or a carrier financing the production.
But, in probably the majority of cases, it’s for the PR value. Shooting a movie or premium brand ad on an iPhone is newsworthy (at least for now). It gets coverage you either couldn’t buy or couldn’t afford. In those cases, the iPhone is really just a sensor: it’s the cinematography lenses, Steadicams and so on that enable filmmakers to produce professional quality work.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max is an ugly nameI agree with my colleague Benjamin Mayo that the name is a real mouthful.
Apple design is all about minimalism. Simplicity. The essence of a product, and nothing more.
Apple extends that philosophy to everything from its mostly-white-space packaging to its low-key product videos. It generally applies to product names too. AirPods, for example — that’s a great name. Anyone familiar with Apple knew about the iPod and EarPods, and the Air implies through the airwaves. Simple, communicative. HomePod, same deal: once you know ‘pod’ is about sound, HomePod is a minimalist name that communicates what it needs to.
iPhone 11 Pro Max, not so much.
But I do reluctantly believe itMuch as I don’t want to, though, I can believe it.
It fits with Apple’s naming conventions for the MacBook and iPad range, so it would be perfectly consistent to extend it to the iPhone too. And given we currently have the Max suffix for the larger model, that too would be consistent.
I do, though, wonder whether Apple should instead be consistent with its other Pro models. With both the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, the screen size is used as the differentiator. We have the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 15-inch MacBook Pro. We also have the 11-inch iPad Pro and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Why not have the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro and 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro?
Admittedly it’s still a bit of a mouthful, but personally, I think it’s neater than iPhone 11 Pro Max. Especially when we want to talk about the model without distinguishing by screen size. Currently, we have to talk about the iPhone XS/Max or something even more convoluted. It would be much easier to simply say iPhone 11 Pro.

I Can’T Stop Thinking About The Midnight Green Iphone 11 Pro
I can’t stop thinking about the Midnight Green iPhone 11 Pro
Of all Apple’s surprises at its big 2023 iPhone event yesterday, the one I was least expecting was that I’d fall for a dark green phone. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max proved controversial from the first leaks, the aesthetic balance of including a new triple camera array without making a smartphone look, well, ugly ending up being a very hot topic indeed.
I’m still not sure whether Apple’s triangular cluster of cameras on the back of the iPhone 11 Pro works visually or not. I do know that it’s much more obvious in the two lighter finishes, Gold and Silver, while darker colors mask the lenses more effectively.
Space Gray was the obvious third finish for Apple to offer, but the Midnight Green iPhone 11 Pro took me by surprise. Apple hasn’t been averse to color over the past few years, with last year’s iPhone XR offering some unexpected case treatments. They proved divisive too, with the pinkish Coral particularly polarizing.
Already I’m seeing similar conflict over the new Midnight Green finish. Green isn’t typically a color you see on smartphones, at least not dark green, nor electronics in general. It’s the cellphone finish equivalent of a brown car, perhaps. Silver, white, and black are the typical choices, and if there’s a fourth color then it’s generally something bright and eye-catching.
In Apple’s case that’s often left to the PRODUCT(RED) iPhone to deliver, along with a donation to AIDS research. That will be available in the iPhone 11 line-up, but not as an iPhone 11 Pro. At least, not yet, anyway. I’m not discounting the idea of a RED iPhone 11 Pro being added as an extra color option later on in the product cycle.
If you’d asked me at the top of the Apple keynote whether I’d want a green phone, I’d have told you no. Now, though, all I can think about is how Midnight Green is the killer finish for the iPhone 11 Pro.
It’s one of those colors that you may need to see in person to understand. The green is subtle, hinting a little at “military camouflage” but not obnoxiously so. Combined with the vaguely milky frosted finish that the iPhone 11 Pro has gained – making it much less slippery to hold, as well as cutting down significantly on fingerprints – it looks somewhat otherworldly, as though it was grabbed from the props basket of a movie from the Matrix or Alien franchises.
Glass-bodied phones aren’t going anywhere, at least not until the technical demands of wireless charging change. That’s not going to happen any time soon. I’m glad to see that we’re moving away from high-gloss finishes, though; I know a fair few people who have put their shiny new smartphone down on a desk or other surface, only to see it go sliding off and onto the floor.
It does seem a little strange that, a day after Apple’s keynote, what’s sticking in my mind most is an iPhone color. I should probably be thinking about the triple cameras, or the new A13 Bionic processor, or maybe even wondering whether a “Pro” smartphone that doesn’t include Apple Pencil or Smart Connector support warrants the name. If I’m not, does that say something about the big event and the news Apple had?
I’m going to wait until I have more time with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max to decide whether or not that “Pro” badge is justified. I’ll also be curious to see whether the new ultra-wide camera changes my current opinion: I’m usually team-telephoto. What I do know is that, when I finally slip an iPhone 11 Pro into my pocket, I’m hoping it’s the Midnight Green.
Comment: I Instinctively Support ‘Right To Repair’ But Do Appreciate The Trade
Some eighteen states have now signed a Right to Repair bill, with California the latest to sign up. The bills say that manufacturers must facilitate DIY and third-party repairs by publishing repair information and making both replacement parts and diagnostic tools available to consumers.
I’m instinctively on the side of those who think that devices should be both repairable and expandable by their owners. But I do recognize the trade-offs that involves …
My present 2023 MacBook Pro aside, I’ve upgraded every single one of my Macs – right from the original Macintosh in 1984. That was upgraded first to a Fat Mac, and later to a Macintosh Plus.
My previous Mac – a 2011 17-inch MacBook Pro – was upgraded twice. Immediately after purchase, I upgraded the RAM and swapped out both the 750GB hard drive and the DVD player for a pair of 1TB hard drives. Later, when SSD prices fell to more sensible levels, I replaced the 2TB of hard drive storage for 2TB of SSD.
That Mac later developed the GPU problem that has afflicted a number of 2011-2013 MacBook Pros, and Apple replaced the board under its Repair Extension Program.
So I have personal experience of the benefits of machines which can be repaired and upgraded, and see three benefits to this.
CostApple has long been known for charging quite steep premiums for up-speccing a Mac. RAM, in particular, typically costs far more from Apple than from other suppliers, and drive upgrades too tended to be pricy.
Allowing consumers to perform their own upgrades means that they can save money at the time, but also spread out the total cost of the final spec. For example, someone could buy a base machine from Apple today, and then allow their finances to recover before carrying out upgrades further down the line.
LongevityI’ve tended to keep my Macs for 4-5 years, and part of the reason I’ve been able to do this has been that upgrades have enabled me to keep them up to date. When apps started to use more RAM, for example, doubling the amount was a simple and affordable way to bring about a substantial improvement in performance.
Batteries degrade over time, so replacing an elderly one with a shiny new one was another simple and relatively inexpensive way to breathe new life into an old machine.
EnvironmentConsumer electronic products place quite a lot of environmental demands on scarce resources. It makes sense to enable them to be used for as long as possible before they are replaced with new ones.
For example, consumers like sleek and slim laptops, and that involves compromises. With the MacBook Air, Apple had to reduce the number of ports and drop the optical drive. With the 12-inch MacBook, it had to create an entirely new layered battery system to give people both the slim form factor and the battery performance they demand.
Internally, too, glue takes up less space than screws. Bonded screens, for example, are a repair nightmare, but a key element of how Apple is able to make a MacBook lid or iPad so slim.
We can’t have it both ways. We can’t on the one hand be wowed by the sleek and minimalist designs of Apple products, and on the other demand that Apple make them easy to open, with room inside to easily replace extract and replace components.
Recognizing that we have to make a choice, I’ve tended to come down on the side of accepting fatter devices for greater upgradability and battery-life. But I have to say that the 2023 MacBook Pro has at least been a stark illustration of the benefits of Apple’s ‘sleekness at all costs’ approach.
Previously, I had two MacBooks – a 17-inch Pro and an 11-inch Air – the latter carried when I wanted portability, like cycling around the city. But the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is so portable that I happily take this everywhere I used to take my MacBook Air. One machine has replaced two.
So yes, it’s fine to demand the Right to Repair. But in doing so, we need to recognize the trade-offs that would involve.

This Is The Iphone 12 Pro And Iphone 12 Pro Max
The day has finally arrived. At Apple’s “Hi, Speed” event, the company has officially unveiled the latest flagship smartphone in its iPhone 12 lineup.
During the October 13 online event, Apple unveiled the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max to the world. Of course, for anyone who’s been keeping tabs on the rumor mill as of late (especially earlier today), there isn’t much surprising here. But now it’s official, which means we can finally get excited about Apple’s incoming smartphones.
The Pro in the iPhone 12As you might expect, the iPhone 12 Pro features a lot of the same elements that are in the standard iPhone 12. You’ll get the great display, and you’ll get the great camera systems. You’ll even get the fastest processor in a smartphone ever with the A14 Bionic chip.
However, it’s the differences that matter.
That starts with the premium materials. It has precision-milled back glass. These phones are engineered to make the colors have a built-in luster, and the stainless steel band will pop in its own way, too. The displays feature the Ceramic Shield display technology.
IP68-rated for water and dust resistance. It also supports the MagSafe magnetic wireless chargers and accessories. And yes, it supports 5G.
It has the Super Retina XDR display. It starts with a 6.1-inch display, with the 6.7-inch display (with 3.5 million pixel support) going with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The form factors are nearly identical.
CameraThe Deep Fusion feature will work with all the compute engines with the A14 Bionic processor, capturing multiple images and processes them nearly instantly. The GPU pre-processes the images before running them through the Neural Engine, and the. GPU will also handle post processing as well. Deep Fusion is in all four cameras, including the TrueDepth front-facing camera.
The Pro camera system is “unlike any other device”. iPhone 12 Pro features the ultra wide camera with 120 degree field of view. f/1.6 aperture that allows in 20% more light. 4X optical zoom range. The larger sensor size goes beyond that, too.
iPhone 12 Pro features the new seven-element lens Wide camera with an ƒ/1.6 aperture, the fastest ever on an iPhone, for 27 percent improved low-light performance in photo and video; the Ultra Wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, perfect for capturing more scene in tight spots or epic landscapes; and a 52 mm focal length Telephoto camera, great for framing portraits, bringing the optical zoom range to 4x.
iPhone 12 Pro Max takes the pro camera experience even further. The new ƒ/1.6 aperture Wide camera boasts a 47 percent larger sensor with 1.7μm pixels for a massive 87 percent improvement in low-light conditions. It also includes the expansive Ultra Wide camera and a 65 mm focal length Telephoto camera for increased flexibility with closer shots and tighter crops. Combined, this system offers 5x optical zoom range.
Apple says this is the best camera to date. It has a reworked telephoto lens, and can bring better portrait photos. It supports 5X optical zoom. It also supports optical image stabilization. Apple says it has an 87% improvement in low-light photography.
Apple worked a new system for OIS, too. It offers support for sensor shift. It will maintain sharpness, cancelling low and high frequency movements and vibrations, keeping the image stable. Stabilized exposure times are up to 2 seconds in low-light photos. This means a full F-stop increase in photography. Video recording should offer a truly “cinematic feel”, according to Apple.
Featuring Apple ProRAWPro users are getting more control, too. Apple is building a new feature that will let photographers combine the computational photography and RAW photo capture. This will be a built-in feature later this year for the Pro models called Apple Pro Raw. It will allow photographers to capture photos in RAW format, but also use the Neural Engine and other features. All four cameras support this, and there is no shutter delay.
White balance, tone balance, are now instructions, rather than baked in. This gives ultimate control to the photographer. Apple ProRAW photos can be edited in third-party professional photo editing apps, as well as the stock Photos app.
Don’t forget video recording, now with Dolby VisionApple didn’t forget video capture, too. We know the iPhone is used for recording content all the time, including TV shows and films. And Apple is taking pro video further.
HDR video recording is now available in the iPhone 12 Pro, with support for 10-bit recording. That’s 60x more color capture than previous models. What’s more, the iPhone 12 Pro can record in Dolby Vision HDR. The A14 Bionic makes this possible in real-time. This means photographers can edit in Dolby Vision right from the Photos app.
LiDARThe iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max supports the LiDAR Scanner. This feature first landed on the scene with the iPad Pro earlier this year. It makes it possible for better, more precise placement for objects in augmented reality. It will make the pro camera system even better, too.
The LiDAR Scanner will reduce capture time in low-light photos because it works in the dark. It works in photos and videos. It improves focus time in low-light scenes up to 6X. It improves Night Mode, too, including Portrait photography.
Pricing, availability, and colorsThe iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max are available in several colors, including the brand new Pacific Blue. You can also pick up the pro smartphone in Gold, Graphite, and Silver. Pricing starts at $999 for the iPhone 12 Pro and $1,099 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Built-in storage starts at 128GB for each model, with 256GB and 512GB models also available.
The iPhone 12 Pro can be ordered starting Friday, October 16. It starts shipping on October 23.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max can be ordered on November 6, and it ships November 13.
