If our audiences have less attention than a goldfish, it’s important to push the right “hot buttons”Did you know that the average attention span for a new idea, we page or piece of content is now only 8 seconds – compare that to a goldfish at 9 seconds. It’s pretty startling and when you observe your own behaviour, or mine at least, 8 seconds does feel like a short time. But it depends on the context, in this post, Dave Chaffey talks about a 2 second rule to get your message across as someone visits your site or social media outpost for the first time, comparing it to the 7 seconds we supposedly look at an outdoor billboard.
Rational vs Emotional ContentThis got me thinking how so much content that we create does not take the huge lack of time into account. We write and create so much content. Of course there’s a time and place for the detail, our features need comparing, we believe, when a consumer is at purchase stage.
We’ve explored this with our content matrix, above. Here the aim is to aligh content types which leverage emotional and rational with awareness and purchase. It’s a useful graphic, though does still assume that we’re rational at point of purchase.
Of course, the shopping psychologists and experts, books such as Buy-ology and Why We Buy – will all tell you the science reveals two reasons as to why we buy – the rational reason and the real reason. It’s why cheap does not always win, why people smoke, drastically over-spend, and so on. The principle is that human purchase decisions are emotional, most certainly in the west where our needs are, for most people, more than met something explored by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs back in the 1940’s. I guess we human’s can easily construct logic, easily can post-rationalise.

Creatively awarded campaigns are much more likely to be ‘emotional’ than ‘rational’ (44% vs. 19%).
Creative campaigns are 12 times more efficient at delivering business success. The more creatively awarded, the more effective.
In short we’re talking about the different between ‘need’ and ‘want’. And I wonder, in a marketing world all content focussed, are many really getting this human, emotional element right? Where are all the examples, really? A client asked me this earlier this week and there aren’t that many. Here’s 4 that we can learn from:
“The 16 Marketing Hot Buttons” – Sell the dreamBut how do you do it? We’re comfortable with models and frameworks that align content buyer journeys and consumer behaviours, we really like the 3S model here, and the notion of Storytelling for consumer engagement offers the the steps and process. But what do you make those content stories about – what’s the consumer insight to build the story on? This is where the idea of Marketing Hot Buttons comes in. Barry Feig’s ‘Hot Buttons’ idea is basically about standing on the same emotional footing as your customer, connecting through an emotional benefit, you find out what motivates and inspires and align your brand to that – you’re adding to your product through imagery and association by appealing to their self image. What struck me is that the 16 ‘buttons’ that marketers can ‘push’ to get people to buy are things that we do (or could do) with content generation. We can see the examples above do that to a tee. The top needs that Feig identifies are:

Enterprise Dna May Updates – New Content, Courses And More
May was an exciting month for Enterprise DNA, with the number of different initiatives that add value to this community. It is, after all, our commitment to deliver courses, events, and relevant content that will help both members and non-members grow as data professionals.
Here’s an overview of what we did for the month of May.
Wrapping up a new round of our Enterprise DNA Challenge is always a notable occasion as we see how creative and innovative our participants are as we review their submissions. For this round, we dealt with call center data.
We celebrated quite a number of milestones for this round. First, it was the first challenge we launched through our LinkedIn page, bringing in a total of 55 participants. 29 of these participants were non-members and 12 were first-time participants, showing that we’re truly expanding our reach throughout the Power BI community.

The Power BI Showcase is yet another avenue for members of our community to learn. It’s a collection of downloadable pbix reports submitted through our challenges, allowing users to get some hands-on learning especially in terms of the report creator’s development process.
This time, we uploaded a number of reports about call center data reporting, a topic that is truly relevant across various industries. To access these reports, you can visit the Enterprise DNA Forum or upgrade to On-Demand to access all the report submissions and use them as learning tools for your own report development process.
The Enterprise DNA Power Tools is a collection of external Power BI desktop tools that could help make report development more efficient. Exclusively available for Enterprise DNA members, these tools were created by Microsoft Data Platform MVP Greg Deckler.
Initially, there were three tools provided – Quick Measures Pro, Power Sort Pro, and Metadata Mechanic. Now, we’re added two more into the set – Conductor Pro and DAX Editor Pro.
Conductor Pro makes it easier to manage all of your external tools. You can, for example, rename and reorder the tools on your toolbar so that you can work based on your own preferences. You can also add and remove tools depending on your needs. You can even create any number of toolbars you would need by grouping relevant tools together.
As for the DAX Editor Pro, it’s a lightweight version of the Power BI DAX Editor but with full editing features and amazing debugging capabilities. Here’s Brian Julius, our Chief Content Officer, explaining some of the features that come with this amazing tool:

Using Social And Emotional Learning To Connect With Middle School Students
Activities that help students examine their thoughts and feelings and those of others can lead to stronger bonds with peers and teachers.
In certain spaces where I coach teachers, some students struggle to connect, interact, and socialize appropriately with peers and their teachers, even in the latter part of the second semester. These struggles can significantly disrupt the learning process, making effective teaching impossible when unchecked or unremedied.
Some of the disruptions to teaching and learning I’ve encountered this school year include the following:
Interruptions where teachers are unable to facilitate entire lessons
Vulgar verbal aggressions
Prevalent bullying, causing some students not to participate in classroom discussions or seek assistance from their teacher out of fear of being ridiculed and harassed by peers
Decreased focus and motivation levels for learning due to vaping and various forms of substance abuse
Some root causes found in the literature for youth exhibiting difficult behaviors suggest the following:
Unfortunately, teachers in some communities across the United States have reported increasing levels of frequent opposition and social and emotional disconnection among students in recent years.
This type of behavior burdens teachers by putting them under enormous pressure to support kids in ways beyond teaching—especially when dealing with problematic students lacking parental or caregiver involvement. Sometimes these situations can seem hopeless, but we can take steps to improve relationships to empower willing students and appeal to those who may not immediately see a need for change.
Concerned about her students, my collaborator, the principal of William Wirt Middle School, Rhonda Simley, expressed, “Our kids are hurting. Many are using substances to numb their pain. We must provide hope and begin planting the right seeds immediately. We know it’s hard for our teachers to implement SEL [social and emotional learning], but modeling for them with students may give them needed perspective.”
Together, we created a youth empowerment SEL program at the school. We meet with the student body twice a month during enrichment time to engage them in meaningful discourse about issues relevant to them. We also use these sessions to strengthen their student portfolios with a kit of SEL tools and other life skills resources we model and teach them to use. Then we give them time to practice using the tools and provide feedback and emotional support as needed.
Our program prioritizes two powerful activities that help learners begin to develop essential SEL skills. First, we have them compose personal narratives to explore knowledge of self and develop better self-awareness. Second, we use empathy mapping to have them cultivate social awareness and begin to put themselves in a classmate’s or teacher’s shoes.
Here are some general guidelines and student handouts for implementing these two activities.
Developing Introspection by Writing Personal Narratives
Encourage learners to focus on understanding and appreciating themselves through a personal narrative—doing so will make it easier for them to make better efforts to understand others. Emphasize that having knowledge of self means having insight into one’s identity, and self-awareness means comprehending the reasons for our actions.
Students compose an original personal narrative of about 250 words describing things they know about themselves or a particular event or hobby they enjoy (e.g., a sport they play, an artistic skill, or their special talent). They may also include aspects of their culture at home (e.g., music, food, holidays, languages they speak, religion, etc.) or a future goal. The narrative should also provide the following:
Adherence to good grammar and sentence structure.
Clear organization with a start, middle, and end.
Takeaways on what they know better about themselves.
When we introduced this activity, my colleague Ezekiel Valenga and I wrote and read our own personal narratives to inspire and motivate students. One class needed external inspiration, so we had them read the lyrics to 2Pac’s song “Keep Ya Head Up.”
Developing Social Awareness with Empathy Mapping
Students can create an empathy map as a helpful tool for being kind and connecting better with others by understanding how they may feel.
Students may choose a classmate, a teacher, or someone else in their life as the subject of their map. Some may not feel comfortable choosing a person, and that’s OK. In these situations, I request them to choose a literary character or one from their favorite movie or television show. To create their empathy map, students will consider something the other person said and did in a particular situation and then imagine themselves as that person and think about what they might think and feel.
Begin by explaining the importance of social awareness for fine-tuning relationship skills and providing students with a completed example of an empathy map. The teacher then pairs students and introduces a template with the following four quadrants:
Using sticky notes or free-handing on each quadrant, the learners will pay close attention to what their subject says and does. The “What I heard” quadrant should have actual quotes from their classmates. For example, a peer may say, “I like to complete my work by myself.” By paying close attention to behavior and actions, the learners should state only what they saw done in the “What I saw” quadrant. Doing so will give them context for what they believe the person thinks and feels.

Top 4 Reasons Why Iphones Does Not Pay Attention To Heat Dissipation
Gaming with iPhones show that they need proper heat dissipation
A test of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the Nubia Red Magic 7 shows that the former needs a good heat dissipation system. The test uses both smartphones to play “Genshin Impact” for about 20 minutes. The picture quality was set to extremely high quality, and the frame rate was 60 frames.
The test reveals that the average temperature of the back cover of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is 43.2°C. Also, the highest temperature is 46.6°C while the lowest temperature is 38.0°C. Because the frame is metal, it feels obviously hot. The average frame rate of the game is 53 and it runs relatively smoothly. However, mid-way through the game, there were some stutters.
For the Nubia Red Magic 7, the average temperature of the back cover is 41.3°C. The highest temperature is 44.0°C while the lowest temperature is 35.5°C. Although the frame of the Red Magic 7 is also metal, we can barely feel the temperature because of its cooling fans. The average frame rate of the game is 59, and it runs very smoothly, with almost no stuttering.
From the game test results of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Red Magic 7 playing “Genshin Impact”, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is not as good as the Red Magic 7 in terms of the temperature of the back cover or the frame rate of the game.
This shows that Apple may need to pay attention to the cooling of the iPhone. However, it is not. Here are the most probable reasons why the iPhone does not pay attention to heat dissipation
1. Apple’s pursuit of design and beauty affects heat dissipation improvementIf the heat dissipation material and other components are to be installed at the same time, this will inevitably lead to a thicker and heavier fuselage. This is unacceptable for Apple’s iPhone which pursues a thin and light feel design.
Dismantling the iPhone, iFixit reveals that the internal structure of Apple’s latest iPhone is very compact. The placement structure is simple and orderly. If it adds heat dissipation materials, it will conflict with the simple design beauty principle inside Apple’s iPhone.

2. Apple’s “uniformity” checks heating issuesIt is easy for Apple to control parameters that raise the temperature of its devices. This is because of the “uniformity” of Apple’s ecosystem. For Android, we have the open Android system + third-party manufacturers’ hardware + open third-party application stores. The design at any of these levels could cause the device to heat up easily. Thus, there is a need for a proper heat dissipation system.
However, for Apple, Apple’s iOS system + Apple’s hardware + Apple’s closed application store. Thus, Apple is in control of all the levels along the way. We can simply characterize the iOS camp to have a “uniform and central” nature. This uniform nature makes heating not much of an issue.
For example, the same application software running on different brands of Android phones will basically have a large user experience gap due to different optimization and hardware configuration. In order to have a better user experience, Android mobile phone manufacturers must stack materials. This includes paying attention to heat dissipation, in order to obtain a better user experience.
Apple’s iPhone is different. Its powerful hardware configuration, coupled with the unified App Store checks the quality of application software. This enables the iPhone to obtain a better user experience.
3. iPhones do not heat up during short gamingiPhone users buy the device for prestige, taking pictures, communicating and sending text messages, and occasionally gaming. This also means that there are not many scenes and time for the heat dissipation to play a role. Perhaps, Apple thinks it is unnecessary to pile up heat dissipation materials for usage scenarios that are not so common.
In addition, if consumers are not satisfied with the user experience of playing games on the iPhone, they can buy Android phones with better heat dissipation. Apple is open to users buying Android phones. Once upon a time, Apple CEO Cook directly recommended consumers to buy Android phones in response to consumers calling for Apple to open up third-party application installations.
4. Apple’s powerful hardware sometimes permit gaming in power-saving modeAs we all know, Apple’s hardware performance has always been ahead of the Android competitors. Taking the A15 versus the new generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 as an example, test results show that in terms of CPU multi-core, the energy consumption ratio of A15 is 570 points/W, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is only 343 points/W. This means that the Android flagship processor is nearly 40% behind. Although the Dimensity 9000 will reduce this gap, the reduction will not be significant.
The same is true for the GPU energy consumption ratio. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is 3.84 points/W, while the A15 is 6.84 points/W. The latter is almost 50% ahead.
