Vlc 2.0.2 Update Includes Retina Display Support (And Lots More!)
.
VLC 2.0.2‘s headlining update is support for Retina Displays (yay!). However, the laundry list of features, updates, and fixes seem monstrous—especially for a “.o.2” release. The download link is here, and the full list of updates follows.
About a month after passing the 1,000,000,000th download, we are going to release VLC 2.0.2 today.
It includes the following security content:
Fixed Ogg Heap buffer overflow
Updated taglib (CVE-2012-2396)
VLC 2.0.2 adds further refinements to the new Mac interface. We improved the video playback experience by enhancing the crop features and restoring the highly desired “go automatically to fullscreen” feature. Additionally, the aspect ratio is respected like in the 1.1.x releases. The Retina Display (HiDPI) on the new MacBook Pro is natively supported, too.
Furthermore, you can drag & drop items between the playlist, services and media library. Growl 1.3 is supported for notifications as well (disabled by default). Playing a video in a window without any further UI elements is supported again, too.
Finally, we removed the font cache. VLC for Mac will never ask you to wait for it, but it will still find all your fonts!
This update also includes video output improvements for a vast number of PowerPC-based Macs equipped with an ATI Radeon 7500, an ATI Radeon 9200 or a NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra [1] as well as Intel-based Macs with an Intel GMA 950 [2].
Here’s the full list of changes:
Enabled drag and drop of playlist items between the temporary playlist and the persistent media library
Various video output improvements, notably for crop, zoom, osd and menu support
Enabled import of playlist items taken from the service discovery modules to the media library or the temporary playlist
Added media key support for keyboards by other manufacturers than Apple. This fix was facilitated through a hardware donation by ZF Friedrichshafen AG manufacturing keyboards under the brand “Cherry”.
Added HiDPI / Retina Display save UI artwork
Restored the preferences’ fullscreen options, which allows the user to start videos directly in fullscreen mode
Keep Aspect Ratio when resizing is back
Added controls to manipulate the Subtitles Duration to the Track Synchronization panel
Hidden items in the sidebar are being retained for the next launch now
Fixed crash when trying to open an Audio CD by drag & drop
Improve reliability when opening DVDs or BDs by drag & drop
Fixed a crash when attaching harddrives with multiple partitions while VLC is running
Improved OSD rendering in fullscreen mode
The selected audio device is retained throughout multiple VLC sessions now
Since running the Mac OS X interface as an Extra Interface or Control Interface can lead to undefined results, the respective options will be automatically reset on the first launch, if needed.
This fixes issues with unresponsive playback controls and crashes on quit.
Updated Growl plugin supporting Growl 1.3.
Improved reliablity in detecting VIDEO_TS folders when opened through the “Open Disc” panel.
Re-implemented the “Window Decorations” option, which, if disabled, hides all the UI elements from the video output window to give you the cleanest experience possible.
Miscellaneous minor interface improvements
VLC 2.0.2 includes these cross-platform improvements:
Video Output
PCs running Windows XP will use the DirectX mode by default now, like in VLC’s 1.1.x release due to a fast number of broken drivers
Misc fixes in the OpenGL module, on all platforms
Fixed video output on PowerPC-based Macs equipped with an ATI Radeon 7500, an ATI Radeon 9200 or a NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra.[1]
Fixed video output of 10bit encoded contents on Intel-based Macs equipped with an Intel GMA 950 chipset running OS X 10.6 or later.[2]
Access
Reworked Digital TV module for Windows. DVB-T and DVB-C work again
Fixes for RAR compressed files
Fixed DirectShow crashes on exit
Improved PulseAudio input latency
Fixes for HTTP access through a proxy
v4l2 webcam outputting H264 can now be used directly (use –v4l2-chroma=h264)
Fixed Subtitle auto-detection in subfolders
Accepts more extensions for DVD images
Fixed crash in VC1 packetizer
Codecs
Fixed crashes in AAC decoder on channels changes, notably in ISDB streams
Fixed compilation with multiple FFmpeg and libav versions
Fixed G726 support
Demuxers
Fixes for MKV segments and MKV title display
Fixed some mp4, voc, midi and au crashes
Fixed Real .ram and .ra files support
Fixed DVB channel file support
Fixes for alac, vorbis, DTS, VC-1 and Dirac in mp4
Encoders
Fix for MPEG audio encoding. Use Layer2 for the FOURCCs “mp2 ” and “mp2a”
Fixed JPEG generation when doing snapshots
Audio filters and output
Limitation of the Spatializer output volume
Fixed DirectSound device selection
Correct PulseAudio volume control
Fixed Directsound volume initialization
Volume level is no longer applied to the file output
Fixed sampling rate for the JACK output
Lua Scripts
Fixes for stdin/stdout and for different locale issues
Qt interface
Fixed preferences for audio devices on Windows
Fixed various crashes
Fixed multiple issues in the Open Disc dialog
Fixed playlist search and selector behavior
Miscellaneous fixes in preferences, buttons, EPG, playlist and customize dialog
Fixed tags and file names display
Skins2
Fixed mousewheel on Windows
Fixes for key events and focus loss
Web interface
Fixed display of some buttons
Fixed listing of files in the Open interface

50 Open Source Replacements For Windows Xp
Microsoft officially ended support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. That means the company is no longer patching newly discovered security vulnerabilities in the operating system, and people who continue to use it are opening themselves up to security risks.
However, according to NetMarketShare, more than a quarter of all PCs (27.69 percent) were still running Windows XP in March of this year.
Why would people continue using a twelve-year-old operating system that would put them at risk?
No doubt, many are home users who simply aren’t very technology savvy and/or may not have the desire or the money to upgrade to a newer version of Windows. Some probably have older, underpowered PCs that can’t run Windows 7 or 8. And others have specific software—often custom business applications—that only runs on Windows XP.
Fortunately, the open source community has free operating systems that meet the needs of users in all of these situations. This month we’ve put together a list of 50 different applications that can replace Windows XP. It’s organized into several different categories. Those that are easiest for beginners to use come first, followed by lightweight operating systems that can run on old hardware, then operating systems that are particularly tailored for business users and open source operating systems that aren’t based on Linux. The list ends with a few applications that aren’t complete operating systems but do allow users to run their existing XP software from Linux.
Before we get to the list itself, here’s a some quick background for Windows XP users who aren’t familiar with Linux or open source software. Linux is an operating system that anyone can use free of charge. In addition, anyone can see the source code for Linux and modify it however they like. Because anyone can tweak it, it comes in thousands of different versions, which are known as “distributions.” Different Linux distributions use different interfaces or “desktops,” which determine how the operating system looks on the screen. Unlike Windows, Linux distributions generally come with lots of free applications already built in, so users don’t have to pay extra for office productivity software, security software, games or other applications.
1. Linux Mint
Many people consider Linux Mint to be among the most intuitive operating systems for Windows XP users. It supports several different desktop interfaces, including Cinnamon, which users can configure to look and feel a lot like XP.
2. Ubuntu
Very easy to use, Ubuntu is likely the most widely used Linux distribution in the world. The desktop version offers speed, security, thousands of built-in applications and compatibility with most peripherals.
3. Zorin OS
Built specifically to attract former Windows users, Ubuntu-based Zorin is probably the Linux distribution that’s the most similar to Windows. It includes a unique “Look Changer” that switches the desktop to look like Windows 7, XP, Vista, Ubuntu Unity, Mac OS X or GNOME 2, and it includes WINE and PlayOnLinux to allow users to keep using their Windows software.
4. Robolinux
Also similar to Windows, Robolinux promises to allow users to run all their Windows XP and 7 software without making themselves vulnerable to malware. It also includes more than 30,000 open source applications.
5. StartOS
Formerly known as YLMF, the interface for StartOS looks an awful lot like Windows XP. It’s managed by a group of Chinese developers, so the website is in Chinese. However, English versions of the OS are available.
6. Pinguy OS
According to the Pinguy website, “PinguyOS is very much designed for people who are new to the Linux world; many people coming from both a Windows or a Mac background will find plenty of familiar features along with some new ones that aren’t available in either Windows or Mac.” It’s based on Ubuntu and uses the Gnome-Shell desktop.
7. MEPIS
Popular with new Linux users, MEPIS aims at providing a Linux distribution that’s very stable and very easy to use. It comes with hundreds of applications preinstalled and you can easily dual-boot it alongside Windows so that you can continue using XP software.
8. Antergos
Previously known as Cinnarch, Antergos is based on Arch Linux, which is popular with hard-core open source users, but Antergos much easier for beginners to use than Arch. It comes with a graphical installer that allows the user to choose from among several interfaces, including some that look quite a bit like XP.
9. Manjaro
Like Antergos, Manjaro aims to be a more user-friendly version of Arch. It comes with desktop environments, software management applications and media codecs pre-installed so users can get right to work after installing it.
10. PCLinuxOS
Like many other OSes on this list, PCLinuxOS was designed with usability in mind. It can run from a LiveCD, meaning you can try it out while still keeping Windows XP installed on your PC.
11. Edubuntu
For those looking to replace Windows XP on a PC primarily used by kids, Edubuntu is an excellent choice. It’s based on Ubuntu (and supported by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu), so it’s very user-friendly. Plus, it adds plenty of software tailored for use by schools or home users with children.
12. Mageia
Forked from Mandrake (which was later renamed Mandriva), Mageia is a community-driven Linux distribution with a good reputation for being beginner-friendly. Because it’s updated very frequently, it tends to include more recent versions of software packages, and it has excellent support for several different languages.
13. OpenMandriva
14. Kubuntu
Kubuntu’s goal is to “make your PC friendly,” and it’s fairly easy for new Linux users to figure out. It combines Ubuntu and the KDE desktop and includes plenty of built-in software, like a web browser, an office suite, media apps and more.
15. Netrunner
Netrunner is based on Kubuntu, plus some interface modifications to make it even more user friendly and some extra codecs to make it easier to play media files. The project also offers a second version of the same OS based on Manjaro.
16. Kwheezy
17. Point Linux
Also based on Debian, Point Linux uses the Mate desktop, which should feel comfortable to most Windows XP users. It aims to be a “fast, stable and predictable” desktop operating system.

Humble Bundle Monthly: What is it?Whether you’re a hardcore gamer, or just like hoarding awesome titles in your virtual library, we have some exciting news for you. Humble Bundle is an online platform where you can get a lot of games, but also books, comics, and even software, for a bargain price.
If you’re already familiar with this service, it’s time to get down to business. You can grab Humble Bundle’s awesome deals in various ways: you can either wait for your desired titles to show up in bundles, purchase a Humble Choice plan, or check out the Humble Store.
Humble Monthly vs Humble ChoiceIt’s no longer a secret; Humble Bundle has been here for a long while and has already built some solid reputation. If you feel a bit nostalgic (much like we do) you’ll surely remember there was a time when you could pay as little as $12 per month in exchange for a lot of games. We refer to this pleasant time as the “Humble Monthly” era.
However, times have changed and Humble Monthly has grown into what today we know as Humble Choice. It’s similar, but not exactly the same. There are three different plans, and you can choose the games you get to keep. As a result, there’s no longer a standard $12 monthly payment, as each plan is priced differently and offers you a different amount of content.
Note: if you have a Humble Monthly (classic) plan since before the Humble Choice came to be, you can keep using it. However, if you cancel it (unsubscribe), you will lose it forever. To make matters worse, there’s no way to revert to the Classic plan once you’ve unsubscribed.
How does Humble Choice work?Even if you miss the good ol’ days when you paid a flat $12 monthly fee for games galore, many users argue that Humble Choice is fairer to the average consumer. The cheapest option ($5) grants you access to a DRM-free game catalog, whereas the most expensive plan ($20) lets you choose 9 titles every month from a 10+ selection of curated games.
Additionally, as long as you’re a subscriber, you get some generous discounts off certain titles in the Humble Store. Thus, the Lite and Basic subscriptions grant you a 10% off discount, while the Premium plan can shave up to 20% off your purchases.
One thing that’s worth mentioning is that unlike the bundles section, Humble Choice doesn’t offer anything besides games. At least not for the time being, anyway. Long story short, this monthly subscription was designed with gamers in mind, and will probably stay that way.
Humble Choice May 2023Expert tip:
May 2023 games:
Jurassic World Evolution + Jurassic World Evolution – Deluxe Dinosaur Pack

May 2023 extras:
Rainy Season – DRM-free game
Fae Tactics Sneak Peek

Note: depending on your Humble Choice plan, you’ll be able to pick 9, 3, or no games at all from this compilation. The Premium plan lets you choose 9 games for keeps, the Basic one allows 3 game grabs, while the Basic plan only gives you access to the Humble Trove. Which brings us to the next part of our article:
Humble Trove: Free & DRM-free gamesThe Humble Trove is a nice touch to the Humble Choice plans. It’s only fair that Basic plan subscribers get something besides store discounts, right? Joke aside, regardless of the plan you wish to purchase, Humble Bundle offers you free access to the Humble Trove.
Thus, the Trove is but a collection of DRM-free games that you can download on your PC and play for free. That being said, as long as you’re a Humble Choice subscriber, you’ll always have access to this catalog.
If you cancel your Humble Choice subscription you won’t be able to access the Trove again. On the bright side, you’re free to play the games that you’ve already downloaded to your PC before your subscription expired.
We’ve compiled a full list of the games you’ll find in the Humble Trove. We’re always updating the list with the latest additions, so you can rest assured that we won’t miss any title, regardless of its “freshness.” Therefore, without further ado, here are the Humble Trove titles, sorted from newest to oldest (appearance):
