The European Union’s European Commission has had its sighs set on a standard mobile phone charger for quite some time. And yet, nothing has come of it. But this time might be different. We first heard about these most recent plans in January of last year, and now it looks like the EU is finally ready to start legislating.
As reported today by Reuters, the EU’s EC is going to move forward and present legislation to standardize the mobile phone charger sometime in September. If this passes, it would aim to choose a general standard for all mobile phone chargers, which would then have to be followed by companies like Apple, Samsung, and others. And while it’s main focus is on mobile phones, it would include other electronic devices, too. This isn’t completely unheard of, though. Apple actually agreed to this years ago, along with other major smartphone companies, with the first major push happening in 2011.
That did see a drastic reduction in different charges throughout the market, but, at the time, that also meant a reliance on the USB 2.0 micro-B connections. That lasted a little too long, and we’ve since seen the market shift quite a bit. Now, though, USB Type-C is all the rage, with the majority of companies delivering pieces of technology relying on the cable to charge their devices. While Apple hasn’t adopted USB-C for the iPhone lineup quite yet (despite all those rumors), it has for a variety of other devices, including within the iPad lineup and MacBook range.
As pointed out in the original report, this new legislation –if it passes in any meaningful timeframe– would mainly impact Apple. And the company has argued against it. Last year, Apple said this legislation would actually lead to more environmental waste, and that it would ultimately stifle innovation, too. Apparently the European Commission doesn’t agree, as they’re ready to move forward with this proposal anyway.
Now, something to be aware of all this time later. This is not the EU’s EC telling Apple that it must adopt a USB-C port on the iPhone lineup. Instead, this is for the wall charger itself. However, this change would ultimately require Apple to probably adopt the USB-C port on the iPhone because in many regions it would force the company to install an adapter in the box of iPhones sold across the world. So, getting Apple to adopt a USB-C port in the iPhone lineup in a roundabout, costly sort of way.
And, as it stands, Apple has already pointed out that the market is moving towards a USB-C standard anyway. The company says this move doesn’t need the help of the European Commission. From today’s report:
The move will affect iPhone maker Apple more than its rivals. IPhones and most of Apple’s products are powered by its Lightning cable, whereas Android devices are powered by USB-C connectors.
Half of chargers sold with mobile phones in the European Union in 2023 had a USB micro-B connector while 29% had a USB C connector and 21% a Lightning connector, a Commission impact assessment study in 2023 found.
The legislation will be presented next month, but there’s no word when anything might happen after that.

If you’ve decided that it’s time to make the switch, we have good news. There are only two main types of plans to try — those with limited data and those with unlimited data. We’ll break down the broad strokes in the table below, and then we can jump into the nitty-gritty of each option.
The easiest place for most people to start — especially if you just want to give Ultra a test run — is with a limited data plan. You can always start with the 250MB per month option, though the data cap serves as a strict limit. Once you move into one of the higher-capacity plans, you technically get unlimited data instead. Nationwide talk, text, and data are fairly standard for affordable MVNOs, but international calling is what sets Ultra Mobile apart. After all, there aren’t too many other plans that grant you calling to 80 countries for as little as $10 per month. The included international destinations cover everywhere from Australia to Venezuela, and many offer mobile calling as well. American Samoa only offers mobile calling, but you’ll have to check on the entire list before signing up.
If you don’t see your preferred destination on the list of 80 countries, you’ll have to check Ultra Mobile’s master list for individual rates. It should show you both a mobile to mobile rate and mobile to landline rate, as well as whether or not there’s a fee for text messages. Some calls can cost as little as five cents per minute, while others can run you for nearly 50 cents every single minute you spend on the phone.

Luckily for everyone, it’s pretty easy to choose an Ultra Mobile plan. It really just comes down to whether or not you need unlimited high-speed data. Even though all plans technically include unlimited data, you’ll be throttled once you reach a certain point. If you want to stretch your speed as far as possible, you’ll have to turn to the Unlimited and Unlimited Plus plans. These offer 40GB and 60GB, respectively as well as a slightly larger international roaming credit.
If you’re alright with a lower data cap, you can take your pick from 250MB per month all the way up to 15GB. All of these plans offer the same talk and text options, but there are some monthly deals to help steer your spending right now. For example, the 3GB plan is just $11 per month for three months — the same as you’d pay per month for six months of the 250MB plan.

Ultra Mobile vs the competition
If you’re hoping for an affordable AT&T-based carrier, it’s tough to top Cricket Wireless. It packs limitless talk, text, and data into one friendly package, and you can text with friends in 37 destinations worldwide. Cricket Core also brings access in Canada and Mexico into the mix, though your usage cannot exceed 50% of your overall billing cycle.

Ultra Mobile is keen on its affordable coverage options, but you might not guess so by looking at the available phones. The carrier has just about all of the latest flagships on offer, including options from Apple, Samsung, and Google. However, Ultra has quite a few older models to choose from, too, with the likes of the Pixel 4a 5G ($499) and Galaxy S10 ($549) gracing its shelves.
As with most carriers, you’re more than welcome to bring your own phone when you switch. All you have to do is sign up for a plan and buy a SIM card to get started. Ultra Mobile is a GSM carrier, so you should have no problem bringing a phone from AT&T or T-Mobile, or you can bring an unlocked device.

Ian Goodfellow, Apple’s Director of Machine Learning, has resigned in opposition to the company’s return to office policy.
The news comes just days after Apple Together, a cohort of disgruntled Apple employees, penned an open letter expressing their opposition to plans to make spending three days in the office a requirement for the company’s 25,000 Bay Area employees after May 23rd. This will mark the final phase of the company’s gradual return to office strategy, which commenced last June but was then postponed due to Covid fears.

Ian Goodfellow, Apple’s Director of Machine Learning, is leaving the company due to its return-to-work policy. Journalist Zoe Schiffer broke the story on Twitter, Goodfellow said in a letter to employees that he felt “strongly that more flexibility would have been the best policy for my team.”
Goodfellow, a former employee of Google who was a Senior Staff Research Scientist, is a highly respected figure in his field described by journalist Zoe Schiffer as Apple’s “most cited [machine learning] expert.”
He joins the cohort of Apple staffers known as Apple Together in his opposition to the return-to-work mandate.

Apple’s current considerations call for a video camera to be integrated into the top bezel of the Apple Watch 2, enabling users to make and receive FaceTime calls on the move via their wrists. The company telegraphed its interest in increasing Apple Watch FaceTime functionality during the rollout of watchOS 2.0 at the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month. For the first time, the new software allows users to answer FaceTime Audio calls from the Apple Watch, as well as route FaceTime video calls to either be answered on an iPhone or rejected. Of course, plans can change and it is possible that the camera could be pushed back to a later model.
More iPhone Independence

While Apple and consumers were both concerned about the Apple Watch’s real-world battery life prior to the product’s April release, Apple has conducted market research since then, and has concluded that the majority of current customers are satisfied with charging their Apple Watches nightly. According to a source, Apple’s research indicates that average consumers finish each day with between 30% and 40% charge remaining on their Apple Watches, enabling the company’s engineers to change their hardware priorities for future Apple Watch models.
While minor hardware upgrades for this holiday season have been hinted at in analyst reports over the past several months, it is most likely that Apple will wait until 2023 to release a full next-generation Apple Watch device. Sources did warn that Apple prototypes several variations of future hardware products before release, so the plans for a camera-equipped model could ultimately be saved for another generation either due to roadmap changes or component availability. To hold off Apple Watch customers until a new model, Apple will release watchOS 2.0 this fall with new Nightstand functionality, a trio of new watch faces, improved email functionality, and new “Digital Touch” messaging features.
