As you know, Samsung’s campaign headlined under the ‘The Next Big Thing’ tagline went viral in September of 2012, thanks to a particularily scathing ad that ridiculed folks who’d wait in line for an iPhone 5.

The commercials were meant to counter the iPhone 5 “tsunami,” as Samsung execs put it, and have managed to enrage Apple’s marketing boss Phil Schiller so much that he proposed in an email to CEO Tim Cook that the firm fire its longtime ad agency.

According to a highly confidential email exchange between Samsung execs, we now know that the South Korean firm saw Steve Jobs’s death as the “best opportunity to attack the iPhone” and tarnish the Apple brand…

The emails were presented as evidence in the trial and obtained by AppleInsider.

As a reminder, Apple on October 4, 2011, announced the iPhone 4s and Steve Jobs passed away the following day.

Then vice president of sales operations and head of national sales for Samsung Telecommunications America, Michael Pennington, immediately issued an internal email to Todd Pendleton, Samsung’s chief marketing officer, to frame the unfortunate event as an opportunity to take the iPhone 4s head on.

“Sorry to continue to push this issue, but I have seen this far too long and I know this is our best opportunity to attack iPhone,” Pennington wrote. “If there is no consensus on the approach I initially proposed, I will stop pushing, but I would like to better understand our strategy so I can align with that.”

The point here is the there is an unintended benefit for Apple, since the external messages by third parties are all highlighting and/or supporting the consumer perception that Apple products are superior, since Jobs’ was such a visionary and perfectionist.

What consumer wouldn’t feel great about purchasing a device developed by such a person?

He then goes on to complain how Jobs’s passing has led to “a huge wave of press coverage of Apple’s and iPhone’s superiority, all created by the, passionate, tireless, perfectionist” CEO.

To this, Pendleton replied that his team would unleash the holiday ad blitz “and go head to head with iPhone 4s.”

Pennington also suggested that Samsung should “use Google to attack Apple” in a marking campaign as a way to “avoid attacking Apple due to their status as a large customer.”

If it continues to be Samsung’s position to avoid attacking Apple due to their status as a large customer, can we go to Google and ask them to launch a campaign against Apple, based on the many better Android options available in the market for the fourth quarter of 2011?

The following year, Pendleton wrote in another email that Samsung needed to “quickly understand the exact reasons” why the company was winning customers away from iPhone. “We should also quickly understand where we failed to win customers away from iPhone in our initial GS3 launch,” he wrote.

After losing the first patent trial which resulted in nearly a billion dollar in damages to Apple, Samsung’s legal strategy has taken a U-turn. The company is now attempting to shield itself by arguing that some of the allegedly infringing features its devices use have been developed by Google.

Samsung is also arguing it’s been successful at beating Apple because it had better marketing, not due to patents or any specific feature.

Apple Announces Steve Jobs Has Passed Away

Apple co-founder and visionary CEO Steve Jobs has passed away at the age of 56.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Below are pieces of remembrance from some of the people surrounding Steve Jobs.

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

Whatever option you choose, this can be as solitary as you want it to be. You can work as a freelance writer or with an organization, depending on your need for human contact.

Qualification(s) Needed: To become a writer, you must have at least a bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, or any equivalent field. Debate: Who Was The Best Star Trek Medical Officer?

With the imminent release of Star Trek: Beyond on Friday, it’s Star Trek week here at Popular Science. In addition to coverage about the movie, upcoming television series, and in general all things Trek-related, our staff is lifting the veil on one of our nerdiest moments yet. Photo Director Thomas Payne, Social Media Editor Jason Lederman, and Assistant Editor Sarah Fecht, along with contributing writers Kelsey D. Atherton and Mary Beth Griggs–all Trekkies–sat down to hash out the best of the best rankings in Starfleet. With part two, we present the transcript of our discussion over the best medical officer in Starfleet history.

Sarah: Bones. He’s so cynical–you’ve got to love him.

Thom: I love Bones. I thought Bashir was interesting, too, once they started fleshing out what he was about. Because he’s also, when you think about it, he’s supposed to be sort of like a Muslim character right? Which is cool because you didn’t see a lot of the main characters as fully formed beings. I liked his friendship with O’Brien too.

Mary Beth: Okay, best bromance? Well no, I think I’m going to argue against myself: I think that O’Brien and Bashir is one of the best, but then there’s also…

Jason: Geordi Data?

Mary Beth: Yeah, and Bones and Kirk.

Thom: Or Spock and Kirk.

Jason: Or Scotty and Kirk.

Mary Beth: Just anybody and Kirk.

Sarah: Well he’d probably get it on with all of those things anyway so…

Thom: So who was your favorite doctor then, Jason?

Jason: I think it’s the Doctor. He, more than almost any character in the Star Trek universe, gets to grow over the course of his series. Even becoming the Emergency Command Hologram which is super cool. He gets to deal with all of these unknown diseases in the Delta Quadrant.

Thom: He’s definitely one of the most interesting characters on the show. He’s probably my favorite.

Jason: As much flack as I’ll give Enterprise, Phlox is super cool cause he’s the only doctor who’s an alien. Also he’s really into these home remedies. Which is kind of funny. They’re like, “This is an incurable disease,” and he’s like, “I have some worms that will treat that.”

Thom: In his Medical Bay he had live creatures.

Jason: Yeah exactly. He used a lot of these things that he had picked up on alien worlds that not only is the crew of the NX-01 not introduced to, but we as Star Trek fans are not introduced to at all in any series. They are just like weird fucking things. He’s like, “Yes I picked this up on planet blah blah blah. It’s the Velourian Vampire Bat and they only drink the blood of their enemies.”

Kelsey: I think McCoy, I’ve got to go for McCoy. Always deeply skeptical of every decision and everything about the environment. Cause I think, if you’re going to go where no one’s gone before you should still think, “This doesn’t make any sense at all and I’m going to have to patch someone up afterwards.”

Sarah: I’m with you there, McCoy is my favorite. Bashir is my second favorite, just because he cares so much. Like McCoy cares too, but he’s primarily just a grump. Whereas Bashir is more optimistic and caring, and that’s the way you would want a doctor to be if he were your own doctor.

Mary Beth: Yeah, but I think Bashir’s problem is he’s got a hero complex.

Thom: Where Bashir starts off as a character at the beginning of seasons, and where he ends up, there is a huge arc in between. Like when they get captured by the Jem Hadar and he kind of gets taken down a notch. He’s a totally different character after that. Crusher kind of stays Crusher.

Mary Beth: Crusher is Crusher. But I think if I was choosing a personal physician based on the doctors in the Star Trek show, I would go with Crusher. She’s got easily the best bedside manner and everything. I think that if I was in space, though, I might go with the Doctor. All of the medical knowledge is just in his head.

Thom: He just has no bedside manner at all.

Sarah: He’s not a doctor, he’s a program.

Thom: And then Crusher uses him in what, First Contact?

Mary Beth: Yeah.

Thom: She’s like, “I swear to god I would never use this,” and then she activates the emergency medical kit and you got both together in one scene, which hardly ever happens. … But I do love Bashir, so if we’re taking a tally, I’d say again I guess my favorite’s Bashir. But I love them all.

Sarah: So we have two for McCoy, two for the Doctor and one for Bashir?

Mary Beth: With the caveat I think that I would chose Crusher as my regular doctor.

Jason: I would chose Crusher as my doctor but I think the best Doctor in any Star Trek series is the Doctor.

Sarah: Thom you get to be the tie-breaker I think.

Thom: Oh between those two? I’ll go with McCoy.

Writer’s note: Not to editorialize too much, but McCoy had this one wrapped up ages ago. The Doctor never had his cynicism; Bashir never competed with his bromance. McCoy had impeccable fashion sense and never gave birth to Wesley Crusher. Case closed.

As you’ll know, YouTube is the second largest search engine behind Google in many countries. It’s the number one ranked entertainment site and 3rd most visited in the UK by Hitwise. Given this and since popular videos are displayed in the “one-box” of blended search results for some queries it’s worth investigating how YouTube can be used to reach a wider audience.

It’s an enormous site with a lot of competition given the rate at which new videos are uploaded:

Getting cut-through on YouTube is like any content on the web, you need to have defined your audience and created something of value which will be shared. Defining standard consumer search behaviours

Let’s take the example of a phone manufacturer. I like to start with keyword research using the Google Keyword Tool and the other Google tools as explained in this article on the Google Toolkit by James Gurd.

From this, you will identify the main consumer behaviours grouped in your keyword list. So for a mobile phone manufacturer, common search behaviours will be:

I’d identify around 10-20 common search behaviours for a single popular category and product.

With this initial research complete, we can then turn to the YouTube Keyword Suggestion Tool and test for different searches.

Just like the Google keyword tool, this dedicated keyword research tool is a handy tool for all those in video marketing.

The keyword tool for YouTube is not as powerful or feature rich as the traditional Google Keyword tool, but it is helpful enough to show us the relative importance of search behaviour.

The image below gives an example of the tool in action exploring nokia related keyterms. As you can see, for a brand like Nokia, we find that more searches occur on a model level .

Digging a bit deeper, we can limit results to our target keywords from our existing research. It’s also useful to set the results to phrase or exact match and then you can see the number of searches specifically for that phrase:

You can see that the search volume for the generic keyword “smartphone” is much lower than might be expected. Surprisingly there is a relatively low search volume for reviews. This may be a little misleading since such videos are still popular if they feature in the main Google search results or through PR – information on this will not be available here. Taking the example of Lumia reviews, you can see there are hundreds of thousands of views for these types of videos, so the keyword search volume “not enough data” is misleading about the demand for people to interact with these videos.
