How To Edit Pdf Files In Microsoft Word

Portable Document Format (PDF) is a common format for sharing final versions of files. The format is most used for viewing and not editing. But if you need to edit PDF files, Microsoft Word 2023/2024/2013 brings a multitude of features to the word-processing table, one being the capability to edit PDFs.

Office 2010 provided the option to save a document as PDF, but Microsoft Word 2013 even allows editing of the content before sending it to the final recipient, as a PDF file. Although the full version of Adobe Acrobat allows users to modify PDFs, it’s more cumbersome than editing the original document in MS Office. Why so? PDF is technically an image file, converting this image file back to text needs sophisticated OCR like Adobe Acrobat X Pro or other tools. Adobe Free Reader, therefore, does not allow you to modify the content in a PDF. With Word 2013, however, you can convert a PDF into a Word document and edit the content.

In this post, we will see how to edit PDF files in Word.

Edit PDF Files in Word

When you install Office, you will notice that the context menu for any PDF file, has an option to open a PDF file in Microsoft Word, along with your other PDF Readers like Adobe Reader or Foxit and Windows Reader, if you are on Windows 10/8.

Microsoft PDF Reflow will convert all the files contents, including its formatting like paragraphs, lists, headers, columns, footnotes, tables, etc, into Word content. You will be able to edit even the tables. I tried with various smaller PDF documents and it kept all its formatting, even after the conversion. Then I also tried bigger-sized PDF’s like e-books (sized ~30MB). It took a bit of time to convert – but it did its job. So, you can try large files too if you have some newer systems with more memory.

Anyway, next, a dialog box with a message “Word will convert your PDF to an editable Word document. The resulting Word document will be optimized to allow you to edit the text, so it might not look exactly like the original PDF, especially if the original file contained lots of graphics.” should appear on your computer screen.

To maintain your changes, it is essential you save the document with a new name or to a different location.

So, if you get a pop bearing the same message do not be surprised. Try saving the PDF with a different name or save the file in Word or PDF format.

Depending on the situation, one option may work better than the other:

PDF: If you don’t want to make any more changes to the document, save the edited document as a PDF file.

Word document: If you want to continue making changes to the document (or if you need a second pair of eyes for approving the changes), save it as a Word document. You can always save it as a PDF file later on.

This is a great feature in Microsoft Word, among many other cool features of Microsoft Office.

Hope you find this tutorial useful.

TIP: You can convert, compress, sign PDF documents using free Acrobat Online tools.

How To Edit Indesign Files Online (Tips & Guides)

InDesign has some useful online collaboration features for sharing your layouts with others, but it’s only for review and feedback, not file editing.

If you want to edit your InDesign files online, you’ll have to use a third-party service and a special InDesign file type, although none of them are going to be as effective as editing your InDesign file actually within InDesign.

Most InDesign documents are saved as INDD files, which is InDesign’s native file format. It is a proprietary format, and as of this writing, INDD files cannot be edited by any other program except InDesign.

So, in order to edit your InDesign files online, you must export the files first.

How to Export Your InDesign File for Online Editing

While this may be nice for Adobe, it’s hard to be effective in a workplace environment if you can’t share any of your working files with other apps, so Adobe also created a new InDesign format for file exchange known as IDML, which stands for InDesign Markup Language.

IDML is an XML-based file format, which means that it’s an open, standardized, accessible file format that can be read by other apps.

Creating IDML Files Quickly

Creating IDML Files with Package

InDesign will also generate an IDML file for you if you use the Package command to prepare your file for sharing.

This can be a great way to ensure that all your fonts, linked images, and other necessary files are all available in a centralized location, which makes the process of working with them online a lot easier.

Here’s how you can package files in InDesign.

Step 1: Open the File menu and select Package from near the bottom of the menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + Option + P (use Ctrl + Alt + Shift + P if you’re using InDesign on a PC).

Online Editing Platforms for Editing InDesign Files

While there are no online services or other apps that can edit INDD files, you have a few options for working with IDML files.

Because InDesign documents often use many fonts and linked images, the “online editing as a service” model isn’t the best way to work with them, but a few companies have tried to fill the market gap.

For the most part, though, InDesign is not well-suited to browser-based editing because IDML files have much more limited functionality than INDD files. If you want the best InDesign editing experience, you’ll have to just use InDesign.

1. Customer’s Canvas

As with most services that allow online editing of IDML files, the main focus of the business is elsewhere.

Customer’s Canvas allows you to create and personalize a wide range of items from books to coffee mugs, and they allow you to upload files created in both Photoshop and InDesign.

2. Marq

Marq was formerly known as LucidPress, a web-based desktop publishing app, but it has since changed its focus to ensuring branding and marketing consistency across widely distributed organizations like real estate agencies and healthcare providers.

If you’re not exactly sure what that means, join the club, but don’t worry; they still allow you to upload InDesign files in IDML format and edit them online.

You can sign up for a free account that will allow you to have 3 working documents, which is enough to test out the service or use it as a one-off for sharing and editing a small-scale project.

FAQs

Is there a web version of InDesign?

Unfortunately, there is no official web-based version of InDesign available from Adobe. Adobe has recently launched a web-based version of Photoshop called Photoshop Express, though, so perhaps it’s only a matter of time until there is an online version of InDesign too.

Can Canva open InDesign files?

No. While you can import many different file types into Canva, including some proprietary files created by Adobe Illustrator, there is no way to import InDesign files in any format.

This would be a great addition to Canva’s impressive abilities, but we’ll have to wait for their team to implement it. Until then, you’ll get the best results from working directly in InDesign.

A Final Word

That’s just about all there is to know about how to edit InDesign files online. I’m sure you noticed that the main takeaway was that you’re really better off using InDesign to work on InDesign files, although one of the online services may be able to provide the functionality you need.

Happy InDesigning!

How To Edit Build.prop File On Android Without Root

Android is one of the most preferred operating systems out there, simply because of the customizability it offers. The user can change almost every aspect of one’s device, and even tweak it in certain ways to make sure their devices perform better. All of this is primarily dependent on your device’s config file, that is, the chúng tôi file. This file contains all the configuration data for your device as well as the Android system installed on it. Many power users modify this file in order to tweak their device furthermore. We recently did an article on some of the coolest chúng tôi tweaks for your Android device. Sadly though, since this is a system file, the general conception is that you need a rooted device. Well, don’t worry, as there is a way around that as well. So, if you’re an Android user looking to the chúng tôi file on their Android device but don’t have root access, read on, as we share with you our guide on how to edit chúng tôi without root access:

Edit chúng tôi Without Root Access

Note: The following method requires you to have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM. You can either install the custom recovery or even choose to simply boot through it for this process. This is because you have full access to system files in recovery mode. Also, this is only possible if the system partition is mounted, something which stock recoveries don’t allow. I tried the following method on Samsung Galaxy S8 and Moto X Play, and it worked just fine.

To begin with, download and install ADB and Fastboot drivers onto your system, as shown here.

Next up, switch off your device and head over to the recovery mode. Once there, tap on “Mount”. A list of all the partitions on your device will open up. Make sure the checkbox next to ‘System’ is checked, and the checkbox next to “Mount system partition read-only” is unchecked.

Once you’ve mounted the /system partition, connect your device to your PC and open the ADB window. Once there, type in the following command to transfer the chúng tôi file onto your system:

For example, I wish to transfer the file to C:Beebom on my system, hence the command that I’ll be inputting will be:

adb pull /system/build.prop  C:Beebom

As you can see below, the chúng tôi file will now be transferred to the specified path, in my case,  C:Beebom.

A new Notepad++ window should now open and you should easily be able to modify the chúng tôi file. Once you’re done with your edits, simply save the changes.

Now that you’ve edited the chúng tôi file, we need to transfer it back to your device. To do so, run the following command in the ADB window:

So, since my file is located at C:Beebom, the command that I’ll be inputting will be:

adb push C:Beebombuild.prop  /system/build.prop

Now that you’ve transferred the modified chúng tôi file, you need to set its permissions as well. To do so, open up the ADB shell by typing in the following command:

adb shell

Once you’re inside the ADB shell mode, type in the following command to set the right permissions:

chmod 644 /system/build.prop

And that’s it. You can now close the ADB window. Your chúng tôi file has now been modified as per your preferences.

How To Edit Green Screen Video In Adobe Premiere Pro

A versatile editing technique to really make videos stand out is the use of green screen video. Green screens are used in video production as a way to edit in desired special effects, transitions, or backgrounds in post-production.

The “green” of the green screen is identified by a video editing program, and you can then replace it with another video or image. This is a popular technique, widely used in media from local weather forecasts, to music videos, to Hollywood blockbuster films.

Table of Contents

Adobe Premiere Pro, as a video editing program, does have the ability to edit green screen footage through a method called chroma keying. In Premiere you can use the Ultra Key effect in order to chroma key your footage.

Follow this tutorial and you’ll be able to seamlessly incorporate a green screen effect in your videos.

How to Set Up Your Footage for a Chroma Key

Before applying the Ultra Key effect, you’ll want to clean up your green screen footage to make the final product look better. You will be applying a matte to your video so that you can get rid of the areas you don’t need for chroma keying.

Once you’ve trimmed the video, we’ll move on to applying the Ultra Key and Chroma key to your video.

How to Chroma Key In Premiere Pro Video Editor

Go back to the Effects tab after you’ve applied the matte to find the Ultra Key effect. Follow the steps below to apply it.

In the Effects Controls panel, under the Ultra Key effect, select the eyedropper tool. Use this to choose your green screen background color. If the green screen lighting in your footage is even, you can select anywhere. However, if there are portions that are lighter than others, select a darker area.

Once you select the green screen color, you’ll see the rest of the color disappear. Now you can begin to fine-tune the key to fit it smoothly into whatever background you choose.

There are a few different ways you can fine-tune the edges of your subject so it fits into the background naturally. First, in the Output dropdown, select the Alpha channel. This will change your footage to black and white so you can more easily see what areas need some work. If the white in the Alpha channel looks more translucent, that means the selected color may be more visible there.

You can also change the Setting dropdown to Aggressive. This will select more range of the color you chose with the eyedropper.

You’ll also want to look underneath the Matte Cleanup section. Here you’ll see some effects called Choke and Soften. Choke will close in the edges of your subject with hard lines. Soften also closes in edges, but with a greater feathering effect.

Adding in a Background for Your Green Screen

Now you can do the fun part of adding in the background of your choice into your video. This step is simple to do, and can help you see if you need to change any part of your key further for a natural effect.

Find the background footage you want to use for your green screen in your Media bin.

The chosen footage will now appear underneath your green screen subject.

You’ll be able to see how well your subject fits in the new background footage now, and make necessary changes using the tools outlined above.

Tips for Editing Your Chroma Key

There are a few more tools that will be useful for cleaning up your key so that it blends well into your background or effect.

Transparency

You can find this setting under Matte Generation. Lowering the value of this setting will harden and clean up the edges of your subject, while raising it will soften out the edges. This setting is good for refining difficult edges such as hair or fur, fibers, or other complex subjects.

Pedestal

Changing the Pedestal value determines how much of the background is visible around the subject. Lowering this value will increase that effect, and raising it will create much crisper edges.

Shadow

This value will change the visible “shadow” effect around the edges of your subject, making the edges softer. This is good for making your subject appear more natural in the added surroundings.

Create Mind-Blowing Effects With Green Screen Video in Premiere

For video editing beginners, learning how to utilize a Chroma key effect on a green screen clip is an important skill to master. Green screen editing can be used in a variety of formats and can really help add effects you may not be able to otherwise.

No matter what visual effects or video backgrounds you wish to add, green screen work can be done easily using Adobe Premiere Pro. If you’re a complete beginner on Adobe Premiere, this is a fundamental skill to master.
