It has been a long time since Mozilla updated Firefox’s entire user interface, with the latest update way back at version fifty seven, that’s an entire thirty two versions ago! After a long time coming Firefox version 89 has finally been released and features an entirely new user interface and a lot of changes under the hood.

Thankfully, there are a couple of things you can do to resolve this issue until Firefox addresses the issue on their end. If you’re wondering how to fix YouTube playback issues (stuttering and choppiness) we’re still trying to figure that one out at the moment.

How do you fix low FPS in Firefox after updating to Firefox Proton?

To begin, open Firefox on your computer then type about:config into the address bar and press Enter. Accept the Proceed with Caution prompt and continue.

If that doesn’t fix the problem after a Firefox Restart, you’ll need to try the following.

To begin, open Firefox on your computer then type about:config into the address bar and press Enter. Accept the Proceed with Caution prompt and continue.

After you have checked and made all of the above changes, Firefox should start working at 144hz instead of stuttering and inconsistent 60-70 FPS average. As for the YouTube issue, I think we will be waiting a little while longer for Firefox to push out an official fix. Google is constantly optimizing YouTube to work best in Chrome, so Firefox occasionally breaks as a result of changes.

The Windows 10 Fall creators update isn’t off to the best start with a large number of users already suffering a near-crippling error, a broken start menu. The issue isn’t entirely new, with Windows 8 and earlier versions of Windows 10 also having similar start menu issues. Hopefully, Microsoft will finally address the issue permanently in future updates. However, until that day comes, you’ll need to manually fix the issue on your own. The good news is after having this problem ourselves, we have compiled a list of solutions that should fix the issue on your system.

Important: Before you go any further, I would suggest restarting your computer before trying the steps below, in my experience this problem seems to randomly occur and randomly go away. Sometimes it can take 3 or so restarts before the problem disappears but it does go away. To restart without access to the start menu, press Ctrl+Alt+Del then shutdown your computer using the option in the far bottom right corner. This isn’t a permanent fix but it will help if you don’t have time to do the below steps. It also seems to take some time for the problem to reoccur.

How To Use Firefox Private Network To Protect Yourself Online

Firefox Private Network is an extension for the Firefox browser that aims to protect you from hackers and trackers. You can use it on your home computer but it’s especially useful on a laptop that uses public Wi-Fi networks.

Most web browsers don’t include built-in protection from hackers; you normally have to rely on third-party tools. This is what makes Firefox Private Network so exciting for Firefox users – plus it installs quickly and works with zero hassle.

Table of Contents

Whether you think you’ve been hacked already or you just want to protect your online identity to the best of your ability, Firefox Private Network is an awesome way to help.

Note: Firefox Private Network is free while it’s in beta, but it’s currently only available for people in the United States.

What Does Firefox Private Network Do?

Firefox Private Network makes Firefox safer by encrypting two things while you browse the web – the URLs you visit and the data you send to most websites. This information is then sent through a Cloudflare proxy server to hide your identity.

This

However, Firefox Private Network isn’t all-inclusive:

Only the data transferred through Firefox is encrypted and hidden, so you can’t expect it to protect your other programs and browsers.

Not all web traffic is encrypted; specifically, non-TCP traffic, such as some video conferencing services, are excluded and will not be hidden.

All of the encryption and proxy details happen automatically in the background as you use Firefox. There aren’t any settings you have to change or options to pick from. When you install Firefox Private Network, there’s just a single button for enabling and disabling it.

You can even use Firefox Private Network with your existing VPN service or with other privacy protection tools running on your computer. You shouldn’t even need to make any changes to those programs; just install this one in Firefox and enjoy the extra layer of protection.

Tip: Firefox has another security tool you might like called Firefox Monitor, which tells you if your email address has been part of a data breach.

Is Firefox Private Network Safe?

Since you’re concerned with privacy, let’s be clear what Firefox does and doesn’t collect about you while you use this extension:

Firefox doesn’t use the tool to collect information about your browsing habits.

Firefox does collect generic details like how you interact with the extension, when you turn it off, and behind-the-scenes details about how the extension is functioning.

Cloudflare receives your computer’s IP address, the IP address of the site you’re browsing to, the time you visited, and a unique identifier.

Cloudflare doesn’t share the data it collects with others, and deletes it after 24 hours (unless it needs to retain it for security or legal reasons).

You can read more in the Firefox Private Network Privacy Notice.

Not everything about a good tool is always rainbows, and that’s also true for Firefox Private Network. Depending on the existing speed of your computer and internet connection, running this anti-hacker software might make your connection really slow since data is being encrypted and then fed through a remote server before any webpages are sent back to you.

If your browser is also running a lot of other extensions – and there are plenty to choose from – adding this one to the group might lower the overall performance of your computer, not to mention it (probably) won’t make Firefox any faster.

However, what’s important to question is if the cost of running this tool is worth the benefit. We think that’s a solid yes! If you find that using it poses other problems, remove some of those extensions you don’t use and stop streaming movies while also trying to browse the web. You can then most likely use Firefox Private Network without any performance or bandwidth issues.

How To Use Firefox Private Network

Open Firefox and visit Firefox Private Network. Select Add to Firefox.

Select Add on the prompt to install Firefox Private Network.

Select the extension icon at the top-right corner of Firefox, and select Sign in.

Log in with your Firefox account details. You can create a Firefox account here if you don’t already have one.

Wait a few seconds for the extension icon to change to include a green check mark. This is how you know that Firefox Private Network is enabled and protecting you.

How To Configure The Best Fps Settings For Gaming On A Pc

FPS or Frames Per Second denotes the number of images a CPU is able to display on the screen in one second. The term FPS not only applies to video games but also to videos. The high FPS means more images are displayed on the screen in one second, which smoothens the user experience. The low FPS results in a jerky or choppy video experience. When it comes to the best gaming experience, the frame rate matters a lot. Undoubtedly, the best FPS settings for your video games deliver you the best gaming experience. In this article, we will see how to configure the best FPS settings for gaming on a PC.

How to configure the best FPS settings for gaming on Windows PC

Every video that you watch is a series of images. Technically, these images are called frames. These series of frames are measured in FPS. For example, 30 FPS means 30 images are displayed on the screen every second. That’s why by increasing the FPS, we can smoothen the quality of videos and video games. When you play a video game, the CPU, GPU, and RAM work together in order to deliver you the best gaming experience.

You might have experienced a stuttering effect in your video games. This usually happens when the FPS drops suddenly while playing a video game. You can increase the performance of your games by increasing the FPS. An increase in FPS also increases the load on the CPU. That’s why games with heavy graphics require powerful computer hardware.

If you want to know the current FPS settings for your video games, these free FPS counter software will help you. Do note that, in order to get the best gaming experience, you should upgrade your hardware. However, there are some software tweaks that will help you configure the best FPS settings for gaming on your PC.

Make sure that you have the latest version of your graphics card driver

Enable Windows Game Mode

Disable background and startup apps

Lower your game resolution

Install DirectX 12

Overclock your graphics card

Upgrade your graphics card

Upgrade your RAM

Let’s see all these tweaks in detail.

1] Make sure that you have the latest version of your graphics card driver

In order to enjoy the best gaming experience, you should have the latest version of your graphics card driver. When you play games, the Graphics Processing Unit renders the series of images before the CPU displays them on your computer screen. If you have outdated graphics card drivers, your GPU will not be able to render the images or frames properly due to which you will experience a lag or stuttering effect in your games.

There are many ways by which you can update your graphics card driver to the latest version.

2] Enable Windows Game Mode

Game Mode is a built-in feature of the Windows operating system. Microsoft has developed this feature to enhance the performance of video games. When you turn on the Game Mode, Windows deactivates the background activities during the gameplay, like the Windows Updates, notifications from apps, etc. Hence, it will result in a better game FPS. The following steps will help you enable the Game Mode in Windows 11/10:

Press the Win + X keys and select Settings.

Now, turn on the button next to Game Mode.

3] Disable startup and background apps

RAM or Random Access Memory is temporary storage where the data of the apps or software that are currently in use is stored. When we run tasks on our computers, the CPU does some calculations and stores the calculated data in RAM. This data is then used by the apps or software to perform various tasks. The performance of a system depends on how fast the data is transferred between RAM and CPU.

Every app that we run on our system consumes some amount of RAM. Hence, running more apps results in less free RAM. This will impact the performance of your game due to which you may experience a drop in the game FPS. Hence, for the best FPS in your games, we suggest you disable the startup apps and close all running programs.

4] Lower your game resolution

If you do not have a high-end gaming PC, you may experience some lag in your video games while playing them on full-screen resolution. One perfect solution to deal with this problem is to play games on a lower screen resolution.

5] Install DirectX 12

DirectX is a set of components, developed for software, especially the games running on Windows operating systems to make them work with the video and audio hardware. DirectX 12 brings amazing graphics features for the games running on Windows operating systems. If we compare the DirectX 11 with the DirectX 12, the average frame rates offered by the DirectX 12 are higher than that offered by the DirctX11.

To check which version of DirectX is installed on your system, follow the instructions written below:

Select dxdiag from the search results. This will launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

You will see the DirectX version under the System tab.

If you have the latest version of Windows 11 and Windows 10 operating systems, DirectX 12 is already installed on your system. If you have not updated your system, you may find DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12. The easiest way to install DirectX 12 is to install the latest Windows Updates.

6] Overclock your graphics card

GPU Overclocking is the process of increasing the clock speed of the graphics card in order to boost its performance. The clock speed of a graphics card indicates how fast it can render the graphics. The higher the clock speed is, the better the performance of the graphics card is.

Though GPU overclocking will boost your game FPS, you should keep an eye on your CPU and GPU temperatures because extremely high temperatures can damage your graphics card and CPU. For overclocking your GPU, you can install free overclocking software.

If after overclocking your graphics card, you will experience a temperature higher than the optimal temperature range of your graphics card or your computer starts crashing frequently, you should revert the settings and upgrade your hardware for the best FPS in games.

7] Upgrade your graphics card

If your current graphics card is not able to deliver the best FPS for your games, you need to upgrade your graphics card. Spend some time doing research on the internet so that you can select the best graphics card according to your gaming requirements.

8] Upgrade your RAM

RAM is an integral part of a computer. It plays an important role in a system’s performance. The slow RAM results in the slow performance of a system. Does upgrading RAM increase the FPS in your games? It actually depends on how much RAM you have on your system. Every game requires some amount of memory to run. If you have less RAM, say 4 GB or 8 GB, upgrading your RAM will boost the FPS in your games. On the other hand, if you have 16GB RAM, upgrading it will not make any difference in your game FPS.

Bu Boosts Effort To Recruit Low

BU Boosts Effort to Recruit Low-Income Students Joins American Talent Initiative, an alliance of universities with shared commitment

As part of its expanding effort to diversify its student body, Boston University has joined the American Talent Initiative (ATI), an alliance of colleges and universities with a shared commitment to improve opportunities for students from low- and moderate-income households.

ATI research shows that each year, more than 50,000 low- and moderate-income community college students do not transfer to four-year schools even though their grades suggest that they would thrive at a four-year institution. About 15,000 of those students have GPAs of 3.7 or higher. The same research found that most community college students say they would like to pursue a four-year degree, but only 14 percent attain a bachelor’s degree within six years. ATI hopes to support the graduation of an additional 50,000 low- and moderate-income students by 2025.

Founded two years ago by 30 of the nation’s most selective colleges and universities, the initiative is supported by the Bloomberg Philanthropies and operates in collaboration with the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program and Ithaka S+R, a nonprofit service that helps the academic community navigate economic and technological change. ATI currently includes 108 colleges and universities, and hopes to expand its membership to all of the country’s 296 colleges and universities with six-year graduation rates consistently above 70 percent. Currently, more than half of the students enrolled in those schools come from families in the top 20 percent of the national income distribution. A recently released ATI survey found that over the past two years, ATI member schools have increased their enrollment of students eligible for federal Pell grants by 7,291, a figure that puts the initiative on track to meet its 50,00-student goal.

Robert A. Brown, BU president, says he is pleased that the University has joined ATI. “The goals of ATI align very well with our commitment to bring a more diverse student body to Boston University,” Brown says. “They also align with our commitment to fully fund Pell Grant students admitted to Boston University.”

Jean Morrison, University provost and chief academic officer, says ATI and BU “share a commitment to increase access to higher education for talented students who face economic challenges. BU is delighted to be a member of the initiative, whose aims complement our goals to recruit and support first-generation and low-income students.”

Kelly Walter,  associate vice president for enrollment and dean of admissions, agrees that ATI’s goals align almost perfectly with several strategic enrollment initiatives the University recently launched, including the Cohen Scholars Program, BU Scholarship Assurance, and partnerships with the College Advising Corps and the Posse Foundation.

“Although affordability and access have always been important priorities for BU,” says Walter (Wheelock’81), “we have expanded our efforts over the past few years. In fact, BU is already making progress toward ATI’s primary goal, as the percentage of low-income students in our freshman class increased from 13.3 percent in fall 2023 to 17.4 percent in fall 2023.

“Working together with over 100 colleges and universities to improve college attendance and graduation rates for high-achieving, low-income students is a collective endeavor and one that strengthens and drives our individual enrollment and retention efforts,” she says. “I am hopeful that the momentum of ATI, together with BU’s involvement, will help to achieve our shared goals as well as to make a profound difference in the lives of students.”

Elizabeth Pisacreta, ATI’s project colead, says the initiative does not require specific actions from its member institutions. Rather, each member school determines students’ financial need using either a federal methodology or its own institutional methodology; some schools use both. ATI measures its own progress, she says, by counting the number of students enrolled who receive federal, need-based Pell grants. Pisacreta says ATI pays close attention to the goals and strategies of member institutions, and it shares with all members those practices that are most effective.

ATI reports that 81 member schools have outlined their strategies, which include:   setting a vision for socioeconomic diversity that is clearly prioritized by presidents, chancellors, and boards of trustees; increasing the size of the student body; expanding the pipelines of students they typically reach out to and enroll, through new approaches to recruitment practices and transfer admissions; shifting resources to need-based financial aid and taking other steps to make college more affordable; and improving on-campus supports to ensure that college is inclusive and navigable, designed to help all students learn and graduate.

“BU will have the opportunity to participate in these conversations to see how to strengthen or enhance their existing processes related to outreach and recruitment,” Pisacreta says. “The ATI team is looking forward to working with, and learning from, the BU team.”

You Might Want To Wait Before Updating Some Devices To Ios 7

Our recommendations are divided into two groups: devices that should wait to update until some issues have been resolved, and devices that should think twice before updating because the current 7.0 experience isn’t optimal.

You should wait to install iOS 7 on these iPad models

We do not yet* recommend updating to iOS 7 on the following devices:

iPad 2 – wait, buggy and slow user experience

iPad 3 – wait, buggy and slow user experience

Put simply, iOS 7 on the iPad doesn’t feel entirely ready yet, but it’s worse on these two older models and they wind up experiencing a combination of annoyances; general bugginess plus sluggish overall performance. The bugginess may be tolerable to many (if you don’t mind some apps randomly quitting or becoming unresponsive), but the performance degradation and sluggishness is frustrating enough to just say forget it for the 7.0 build. Tasks that are as simple as typing have an awkward lag to them, changing the wallpaper can take 15-25 seconds and render the entire device useless in the process. Even bringing up Spotlight or rotating the iPad from landscape into portrait mode wind up as exercises in patience. Basically, the iOS 7.0 GM build still feels like a beta on these devices, and the experience will probably not be what you are accustomed to with a speedy and stable iOS 6 release.

* The performance issues, speed degradation, and stability problems may be resolved by a future minor iOS update, perhaps iOS 7.0.1 or iOS 7.1. We highly recommend waiting until then. Updates versioned as iOS 7.0.1, 7.0.2, and 7.1 are actively being worked on by Apple, according to logs studied by MacRumors and 9to5mac, thus we may see releases of those updates sooner than later.

Think twice before updating these devices to the first 7.0 release

We suggest thinking twice about updating these devices because the experience isn’t entirely optimized yet:

iPad 4 – reconsider or wait before updating, buggy experience

iPad Mini – reconsider or wait before updating, buggy experience

iPhone 4 – reconsider or wait, iOS 7 is sometimes more sluggish on iPhone 4 than iOS 6

As mentioned already, the iOS 7.0 GM build still feels like a beta in many ways. To non-developers, that basically means the experience can sometimes be buggy, with apps crashing and freezing up for no obvious reason. Simple tasks can bring frustrations, and typing on the keyboard can be randomly and inexplicably lagged with a delay before characters appear. To get the device to become responsive again, sometimes you’ll have to force quit an app or even hard reboot the entire device. These kind of quirks do not happen all the time, but it’s often enough to be potentially frustrating if you are accustomed to the stability of iOS 6. Waiting a week or two for a minor bug fix update may alleviate many of these frustrations. At the very least, know what you’re getting into before installing iOS 7.0 on any iPad model, and don’t expect it to be a perfectly fluid user experience quite yet.

Finally, the iPhone 4 is also on our ‘reconsider’ list for a more simple reason; it’s often just a bit slower running iOS 7 than it is running iOS 6. That’s probably due to some of the new transparencies, transitions, eye-candy effects, and background app functionality that have been introduced in iOS 7, and it may be resolvable through adjusting user settings or a 7.0.1 type of update. If you’re happy with how your iPhone 4 is now, holding off on the initial 7.0 update may provide you with a better experience.

This is a recommendation based upon experience with the iOS 7.0 GM build. You don’t need to agree with this opinion, and remember that Apple supports iOS 7 on all the devices we mentioned here. At the very least, take the time to properly prepare and back up your iOS stuff before jumping ahead.
