Star Wars Builders Use The Force

Sitting in the California desert, Andy Woerner’s rocket-powered replica of a Star Wars X-wing fighter looks fully prepared to make a run at the Death Star. But for Woerner and his rocket club, building the ship was as big a challenge as what the rebels faced in that galaxy far, far away.

With no specs, they started by measuring a circa-1980 toy model. From that they designed their 21-foot-long plywood version using a CAD program. No detail was overlooked—for example, to get the four 60-pound wings to open and close like the movie’s fighter, they took a tiny 2.3-horsepower electric motor from a radio-controlled helicopter and linked it to a complex series of gears, chains, and shafts.

Unfortunately, the real Force affecting the X-wing at the desert rocket show was gravity, and when it began flying erratically, the group had to blow it up by remote control. Still, Woerner hopes he instilled a love of rocketry in the many kids who got to sit in its cockpit beforehand. No doubt, as Yoda might say, an unforgettable experience, it was.

How it works

Cost: $7,000

Time: 2 months

Co-pilot

Using an inflatable ball as a frame, the group made a fiberglass mold of R2-D2’s head, sat it on a plastic turntable, and hooked that up to the motion system from a radio-controlled boat so they could turn the head from a distance.

Landing

Just before the rocket reached roughly 700 feet, a series of charges was supposed to release four parachutes—on the wingtips, the nose, and the tail—allowing the fighter to land intact.

Self-destruct

When the rocket veered on its ascent, the team activated the parachute charges all at once via radio control, turning it into a fiery mess of plywood and parachutes, while keeping it away from the crowd.

Other impressive Star Wars projects R2-R9 droid

You know R2-D2, but do you know R2-R9? Courtesy of Jerry Greene

Cost: $12,000

Time: 3 years

Engineer Jerry Greene built this R2-R9 droid, seen in Episode I of the Star Wars series, because, he says, everyone makes R2-D2s. Working with the members of an international droid-builders club, he drew up blueprints and then machined and cut the parts of his all-metal robot. Using an R/C helicopter remote, he can steer it, activate a fog machine inside to simulate a smoky breakdown, and even play various audio clips. A flash drive storing prerecorded R2 sounds from the movies is hooked up to a sound card and a pair of speakers hidden behind two vents. And yes, the kids—and adults—love it.

Ultimate lightsaber

Those hilts are quite elaborate. Courtesy of Todd Clay / Ultra Sabers

Cost: $175

Time: 1 week

What’s the point of having a lightsaber if you can’t duel with it? Tired of mass-marketed sabers that were constantly breaking, Alex Buckner decided to redesign them. Rather than stringing the lighting throughout the plastic blade, as the official commercial version does, he placed a powerful LED in the handle so that aggressive Jedi throwdowns wouldn’t damage it. Now he makes the lightsabers full-time and offers inexpensive DIY kits for aspiring knights and lords.

Y-wing fighter

The Y-wing doesn’t have wings, exactly, but it does look like a “Y.” John Gilhooley

Cost: $500

Time: 9 months

Todd Mullin and the club Punk Rocket Science chose to fashion a rocket from a different rebel ship, the Y-wing fighter. They found drawings and blueprints online and began by building and flying an 18-inch scale model. Then they made a 13-foot-long version from plywood, with cardboard tubing for the rockets. Paying meticulous attention to detail, the group even smeared black paint over a coat of white for that grungy Star Wars look. They also added fiberglass and fine-sanded the pods on each side (the Y-wing doesn’t actually have “wings”) for durability and hooked up a parachute ejection system. Once the altimeter registered an increase in pressure, indicating descent, the parachutes would pop. Sadly, it never got that far. After liftoff, the charges controlling the chutes blew early, causing the pieces to crash to the ground and giving the Empire the last laugh.

Star Wars Day 2023 Stash: Toys, Pins, And Books

Star Wars Day 2023 stash: Toys, pins, and books

Today we’re taking a peek at a variety of Star Wars goodies released this week in celebration of Star Wars Day 2023. That’s May the 4th (be with you), and we’re at a very interesting moment in the history of the Star Wars universe. Disney’s release blaster for Star Wars shows and movies is fully loaded and the product-making partners have the licensed goods to make it count.

This week we received a box full of Star Wars products from the folks at Disney/Lucasfilm to take a closer look at in time for May the 4th, 2023, complete with books, toys, and some odd collectables. First, take a peek at these FiGPiNs. They’re difficult to describe. They’re like a metal pin you’d wear on your jacket – but they’re made to be more than that. Each one is part of the overall FiGPiN universe, and they’re made as much to be “displayed like your most coveted figure” as they are meant to be “worn as your favorite accessory.”

FiGPiNs are priced at around $20 apiece if they’re brand new and this size. They have an associated app for Android and iOS devices where you can scan each figure and put it in your collection. They come in high quality acrylic cases, but you can also remove them and buy FiGPiN plastic stands for a different sort of display.

Disney Parks Wishables Mystery Plush Star Tours Attraction Series might be best suited to people that are able to visit the Star Tours ride… but still, they’re beyond adorable. Each one of these (blind bagged) plush toys is $9.99 USD.

The folks at The Republic of Tea created a Mandalorian-themed Iced Tea. The flavor is Blueberry Bounty, and it has Grogu on the label. We’ve had a taste – it is surprisingly delicious.

There’s a new recipe book from Insight Editions called “Star Wars Galactic Baking.” For around $20, it’s extremely well constructed, photographed, and made to be made. In other words: It’s not just a fun list of ideas, it’s stuff you might actually want to make, for real.

We’ve got a couple of heavy duty and highly detailed metal pins, both of which will be available directly from Disney stores. One is a Star Wars Day pin – double layered! The other is a Bad Batch pin – heavy duty! Both cost around $16 apiece.

The book you’re seeing here is The Art of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This was written by Amy Ratcliffe and features concept works for the theme part of tomorrow. This might well be the ultimate take-home sort of product you’d get if you visited the park, OR the best alternative to actually going. In any case, it’s $50 for one fantastic book full of next-level artwork.

Action figures from Hasbro released for this week include a decent collection of Bad Batch characters. Here we’ve got Black Series figures for Hunter, Crosshair, and an Elite Squad Trooper. You’ll find these figures available for around $20 USD. As always, you generally cannot go wrong with a Star Wars action figure – and this latest set of Black Series figures keeps the torch lit.

How 500 Error Codes Can Impact Google Indexing

Google’s John Mueller answered a question about at what point will 500 error response codes cause Googlebot to crawl content less often. Mueller explained scenarios where 500 response codes won’t affect crawling and when they may cause pages to drop from Google’s index.

Accidentally Blocked Googlebot and Caused 500 Errors

The person asking the question explained that their content delivery system was set up to block bad bots while allowing actual human users and legit bots to browse the site.

Everything was working fine until they updated their “server monitoring suite” and apparently the previous bot blocking filters and settings weren’t carried over to the new system.

Afterward they noticed that Google Search Console began listing 500 error response codes in response to Googlebot crawling.

The person finished explaining what happened then asked the question:

“The question came up from our technology team whether this represented real user impact and why we would look specifically at Googlebot and not real user metrics to prove that there’s an issue here.

So, given that context, I have a few questions.

The first is just to get the technology concern out …of the way.

From your perspective, how does Googlebot view 500 series errors and could you give any clarity on established …thresholds at which point Googlebot will …crawl source content …less, based on those errors?”

What is a 500 Error Code?

Servers communicate a variety of status response codes to browsers and bots. These response codes communicate, for example, whether the request for a page was successful, redirected to another page, blocked or unsuccessful.

The 200 response code communicates that the request for a web page was successful.

The 500 response code means that the request for a web page was unsuccessful.

The formal name of the 500 response code is:

"500 Internal Server Error"

The 500 response code is somewhat generic in that it simply means that the page request was unsuccessful. But it often means that the server was down but not always.

Google Search Console and 500 Error Responses

It’s a good idea to monitor the Search Console for 500 Error Responses because they are a strong indicator that something is wrong.

Sometimes it could mean that the server is under heavy load, for example from too many bots and because of that it is unable to serve web pages.

How Googlebot Indexing is Affected by 500 Errors

Mueller provided a helpful explanation of the steps Google takes in response to 500 error codes and how eventually continued errors could lead to those web pages being dropped from Google’s search index.

Google’s John Mueller responded:

“We don’t have any strong thresholds on that.

But essentially what happens with 500 errors is we’ll try to retry them.

And if we continue to see …the 500 errors then we will …slow down crawling.

And if we continue to see that there are 500 errors then we will drop those URLs from the index.

So that’s something if every now and then individual pages have a 500 error, it’s like no big deal.

We will retry them, they’ll remain indexed and the next time we retry them that’s fine.”

Next, Mueller explains that the reason Googlebot slows down the crawling is in case Googlebot itself is causing the server to overload.

“But if a large part of a site consistently has 500 errors and we might assume that maybe we’re causing the problem and we’ll slow down crawling of the whole site and at some point we’ll say well, it looks like these pages are really gone, we’re going to drop them.

So that’s essentially the effects that you would see there and if you’re talking about a large site and wondering like what percentage of 500 errors is okay… I don’t know.

My feeling is if you’re seeing something more than one percent then that sounds like something is kind of broken and probably would be something where we would start to slow down.

But I don’t think we have any hard thresholds where we’d say, this many requests and this many errors means this much slowing down.”

Monitor Search Console for 500 Errors

It’s up to every publisher to decide what their daily routine is. For some people checking the search console once a week is enough. Some may find it reassuring to check Search Console once a day in order to respond to unforeseen circumstances.

In any case, 500 error codes is something to monitor Search Console for. As John Mueller mentioned, large-scale 500 errors could be a flag that something is wrong and in need of immediate attention.

Mafia series is probably one of the most popular third-person action games, alongside Grand Theft Auto V.

Mafia 2 is a worthy successor to the original game, but according to users, it seems that certain issues are frequent on Windows 10.

Among these, many have mentioned game crashes or black screens, freezing, and low FPS. Sometimes, users can’t even launch the game.

Note: The game itself is indeed quite old already, so its no wonder so many issues are present.

Luckily enough, the first game in the series got a Director’s Cut special edition that includes the core game, additional story packs, and new cars.

An excellent special edition package.

Experience a breathtaking cityscape.

Realistic recreation of Prohibition-era USA.

Plenty of Trophies and easter eggs to collect.

The rest of the trilogy is yet to come.
