Apple Watch isn’t a fully standalone device (yet), but Apple’s been working to reduce dependency on iPhone since its inception, and joining Wi-Fi networks is a good example of that. In watchOS 5, you can manually connect to a nearby Wi-Fi network directly from the wrist, even if the selected network is password-protected.

The ability to choose Wi-Fi networks from your wrist, no iPhone needed whatsoever, was first added to Apple Watch with the September 2023 release of the watchOS 5 software update.

You can even join password-protected networks via the watch.

Captive Wi-Fi networks found in public spots like hotels and airports are unsupported.

Wi-Fi networks that require subscriptions or profiles are not supported.

Before watchOS 5, Apple Watch used Wi-Fi credentials saved on iPhone.

About Apple Watch and Wi-Fi

With watchOS 5 and up, you can manually join Wi-Fi networks.

Any Wi-Fi networks your iPhone has previously joined continue to be shared with the watch, too. With watchOS 5, your watch maintains its own list of know Wi-Fi SSIDs and saved passwords that doesn’t get shared with its paired iPhone.

The watchOS software still attempts to prioritize known networks: if you have previously joined a Wi-Fi network on your iPhone while the handset was connected to the watch with Bluetooth, watchOS will continue to use those saved credentials when switching its Wi-Fi connection.

Here’s how to manually join Wi-Fi networks on Apple Watch.

How to join Wi-Fi networks on Apple Watch

To manually join a Wi-Fi network on the watch, do the following:

1) Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch with watchOS 5 or newer.

2) Select Wi-Fi from the list.

3) Wait a few seconds until your Apple Watch has finished scanning nearby Wi-Fi networks, then tap one from the list and dismiss the explainer screen by tapping OK.

4) If the selected wireless network is password-protected, you’ll be prompted to type in the Wi-Fi password into your watch using the incredibly handy Scribble feature.

5) Tap Join in the upper-right corner to join the network or Cancel to abort the operation.

When the watch joins the selected network, the Wi-Fi icon in Control Center turns blue.

How Wi-Fi toggle works

Much like iOS 11, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles in the watchOS Control Center don’t really shut down the wireless radios. Toggling Wi-Fi off from Control Center dims the icon and disconnects the device from any networks it’s connected to, but keeps the radios on to support Continuity features such as AirPlay, Handoff, Location Services and Instant Hotspot.

After you manually disconnect from a Wi-Fi network or toggle Wi-Fi off in Control Center, your Apple Watch won’t re-join it until you do one of the following things:

Turn on Wi-Fi in Control Center

Walk or drive to a new location

It’s 5:00 am local time

The device gets restarted

Apple says this change allows for a better user experience because people will stop wondering why AirDrop stopped working after disabling Wi-Fi from Control Center (the EFF disagrees).

To fully disable the Wi-Fi radio and Continuity services, disable Wi-Fi via Settings

How To Fix “Your Wi

Nearly everyone alive today knows that password-protecting your network is best practice. You don’t want just anyone having access to your network, whether it’s your neighbor just looking for free Internet or a malicious hacker looking to steal your information. You don’t want to get a visit from the police just because someone else used your network for nefarious purposes!

Passwords are not the only protection your network needs. It also needs strong encryption so that no one can intercept the data.

Wi-Fi Encryption Protocols

There are different methods of encryption that are used to protect Wi-Fi networks: WEP, WPA, and WPA2. The Wi-Fi Alliance has just begun certifying new products using the new WPA3 technology. Each new protocol improved on the security of the previous one, making your network safer.

However, the older versions are still available and, unfortunately, still widely used. WEP has never been a good option for encryption, even when it was first released. The Wi-Fi Alliance retired this method of encryption in 2004. A year later, the FBI demonstrated how easily hackers could crack WEP encryption by exploiting its many flaws.

The Wi-Fi Alliance planned to replace WEP with WPA-TKIP, but that protocol works in very similar ways as the original one. They have many of the same vulnerabilities. If you can crack one, you can usually crack the other.

Windows’ “Wi-Fi Isn’t Secure” Warning

Windows has recently added a warning when you try to connect to a network that is protected by one of these older encryption protocols. This message is for your safety and as a warning, especially if you are running Windows 10, that you will soon be unable to connect to these less secure protocols.

This warning states:

[Network Name] isn’t secure.

This Wi-Fi uses an older security standard that’s being phased out. We recommend connecting to a different network.

This message lets you know that you are trying to connect to a network that is still using WEP or WPA-TKIP encryption.

How to Fix the Issue

If you see this message when trying to connect to your home network, you should be able to fix the problem by enabling a stronger, more recent method of encryption.

Each router has a different method for changing these protocols, so you may have to check the manufacturer’s website to find the exact location of this option.

1. Either type your router’s IP address into the address bar of your browser, or if you have a Netgear router, you can type chúng tôi to access the router.

2. Log in to your router with your username and password. If you don’t have a password set, check the router manufacturer’s site for the default.

How To Enable 5Ghz Wi

You might have considered switching broadband providers, but this may cost you more and there are no guarantees of a faster connection. A Wi-Fi extender or mesh Wi-Fi system might help, or you could move close enough to the router for a more rapid wired connection.

But there’s another potential solution that’s much easier. Most routers have what’s known as ‘dual-band’ Wi-Fi, meaning it broadcasts two separate Wi-Fi networks at the same time.

2.4GHz is usually the default, as it provides decent speeds over a longer distance. However, if you’re dissatisfied with your current connection, it’s worth considering a switch to 5GHz. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi?

Essentially, it comes down to reliability vs speed.

2.4GHz can pass through walls and floors much more easily, making it a more reliable option for all rooms of the house. 

However, if you’re near the router or have few obstacles, switching to 5GHz is likely to lead to a much faster connection. 

Does my router have 5GHz Wi-Fi?

Unless you already know for sure that your router is a dual-band model and definitely has a 5GHz radio, it’s worth checking that out first. There’s no point enabling 5GHz Wi-Fi on your laptop if your router doesn’t support it.

The easiest way to do that is to check its specifications online, look in the manual, or log in to the router itself and check the settings available in the Wi-Fi section.

When you have separate networks, you can rename them (with 5GHz at the end of the 5GHz one, say) so you can easily identify each network from your laptop, phone or tablet and know which one you’re connected to.

If your router doesn’t support it, almost all of the best routers do.

Does my laptop support 5GHz Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi specs aren’t the first thing you think about when buying a new laptop, and manufacturers don’t always quote them.

But if you already have a Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop, it’s easy to find out, and the method is the same on both.

Using the search bar next to the Start menu, search for and open the Device Manager

Expand the ‘Network adapters’ section

Find the make and model of your laptop’s Wi-Fi – either ‘Wi-Fi’ or ‘Wireless Network’ is usually mentioned in its name

Search for its specific name online

This laptop, for example, has a Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 adaptor. Searching online for this make and model brings up plenty of results for its specifications which show that it works only on 2.4GHz. If your adapter supports Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), it will definitely support 5GHz. In most cases, 802.11n adapters will also support 5GHz.

You can also check directly from Device Manager:

Select the ‘Advanced’ tab, then look for the ‘Property’ list

If it supports 5GHz, you should see it mentioned here. If not (as is the case in the example below), either your adapter doesn’t support it or the wrong drivers are installed

But even if it’s bad news, there’s an easy fix. You can add 5GHz Wi-Fi to any laptop which doesn’t have it by adding a dongle. These are relatively cheap, and there are plenty of great options.

How To Join Up With A Horse (With Pictures)

Remember that the horse will almost always mimic you. If you’re jumping everywhere and shouting, the horse will respond by running and acting aggressively.

Maintain relaxed body language and don’t show fear. If you show fear or hesitation, then the horse will take this as a sign of submission from you, and it will take a lot longer to join up.

A horse may take fright at objects perceived as being waved around, so presenting a uniform silhouette poses less of a threat.

Use a calm voice. Use a sing-song, happy, calm tone of voice. As soon as you shout or berate the horse, you have broken the Join Up because the horse understands your attitude as well as the tone and timbre of your voice.

Bring your horse to an enclosed paddock or ring on a 30 feet (9.1 m) line. Your aim at this stage is to familiarize the horse with the arena, so the animal can see it holds no surprises. You also want to show the horse you are calm and not a threat.

You may also want to talk to the horse in a gentle voice as you do this to help calm the animal.

The process of moving the horse away presents you as lead mare.

Work the horse in circles around you. Continue to push the horse on gently, working in circles around you. As the horse becomes familiar with what’s expected, you will see its body language start to change. The horse may angle its head toward you and twitch the inside ear (the one closest to you) toward you as if awaiting instructions. This is a sign that the horse is ready to negotiate his position and do what you want.

After 5 or 6 circuits (if using a 50-foot diameter pen), change direction by blocking the horse using body language, but not actually getting in the way. After another 5 or 6 circuits change direction again, and start to coil the line and maybe drop eye contact down to the neck/shoulder.

The fact that the horse is relaxed but looking to you for instruction means the horse has started to trust you. Now you are both ready to move onto the next phase and test that trust.

If everything goes according to plan, when you turn your back and walk away, the horse will step toward you and follow. This is the same way a foal follows the mother when she moves off. You want to reward this behavior so that the horse is more likely to repeat it in future.[2]

If things don’t go to plan and the horse ignores you, start working the animal in a circle again and go back to the beginning. However, if the horse is starting to tire, stop and try again another day.

Reward the horse. You can rub between the eyes or offer a nice stroke on the neck. This is how horses naturally groom each other or assure a lower status horse. They do not approach the lead mare unless she is very relaxed and not exerting her authority.

Get the horse to follow. Stand next to the horse on the near side, facing forward. Walk off and circle around the horse’s nose to the right. The horse will follow when you have established that you are the leader. Complete a small circle and reward the horse. Do this in both directions.

How To Manually Change The Date And Time On Iphone

By design, your iPhone automatically uses a combination of GPS and cellular services to display the correct date and time. That’s very convenient if you tend to travel a lot or live in a region with daylight savings (DST). But it’s also possible to manually adjust both the date and time on an iOS device should you want.

How to Change the iPhone’s Date & Time Manually

You can manually change the date, time, and time zone on your iPhone by diving into the Settings app’s Date & Time management screen.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

2. Scroll down and tap General.

3. Tap Date & Time.

4. Turn off the switch next to Set Automatically.

Note: If “Set Automatically” appears grayed out, skip ahead to the next section for ways to fix that.

5. Tap Time Zone to search for and switch to a different time zone. Additionally, tap the current date and time and use the date picker and the time scroll wheel to make manual adjustments to both.

Warning: Setting a date and time that deviates from the selected time zone may cause some apps and services to malfunction.

Once you’ve finished changing the date and time on the iPhone, tap General to the top-left to exit the Date & Time screen.

“Set Automatically” Toggle Appears Grayed Out? Try These Fixes

If the “Set Automatically” toggle appears grayed out and locked within the Date & Time settings on your iPhone, you can’t make any manual changes unless you figure out a way to turn it off. Work your way through the suggestions below, and you should be able to do that.

Remove Screen Time Passcode

Your iPhone comes with built-in functionality called Screen Time to help you impose app restrictions and monitor device usage. However, if you’ve already activated and secured it with a passcode (called the Screen Time passcode), that may force the device to lock the “Set Automatically” switch in place. The only way to sort that out is to turn off the Screen Time passcode.

1. Open the iPhone’s Settings app.

2. Select Screen Time.

3. Scroll down and tap Change Screen Time Passcode.

4. Tap Turn Off Screen Time Passcode.

5. Enter your Screen Time passcode to authenticate your action.

Note: If you can’t remember your Screen Time passcode, tap Forgot Passcode? to reset it using your Apple ID credentials.

Disable Screen Time

If turning off the Screen Time passcode didn’t help, try disabling Screen Time completely. You can do that relatively quickly.

1. Open the Settings app and tap Screen Time.

2. Scroll down and tap Turn Off Screen Time.

3. Tap Turn Off Screen Time again to confirm.

Feel free to set up Screen Time again after you’ve finished changing the date and time on your iPhone.

Disable Location Services

Your iPhone relies partially on GPS to set the time automatically. That could lock the “Set Automatically” switch in place unless you deactivate the corresponding setting within the device’s Location Services.

1. Open the Settings app and tap Privacy.

2. Tap Location Services. Then, scroll down and tap System Services.

3. Turn off the switch next to Setting Time Zone.

If you still can’t interact with the “Set Automatically” toggle, move on with the rest of the fixes.

Restart Your iPhone

Sometimes, the “Set Automatically” switch can appear dimmed due to a glitch within the system software. Restarting your iPhone may fix that. 

2. Drag the Power icon to the right to turn off the iPhone.

3. Wait for at least 30 seconds and hold down the Side button to reboot the device.

Update Carrier Settings

Your carrier might be restricting you from changing the time settings on your iPhone. If so, you can’t do anything about it. But you can check if you’ve got a pending carrier settings update that could activate the ability to set the time manually. It’s a long shot but still worth an attempt.

2. Wait for at least 30 seconds.

3. If you receive a Carrier Settings Update prompt in the meantime, tap Update.

Update the System Software

Applying the latest system software updates for your iPhone can fix any known bugs causing the “Set Automatically” switch to appear dimmed. 

2. Wait for your iPhone to finish scanning for new updates.

3. Tap Download & Install to update iOS to its latest version.

Reset All Settings

If none of the fixes above failed, try resetting all settings on your iPhone. That could help patch out any underlying issues behind the grayed-out “Set Automatically” switch.

2. Tap Reset All Settings.

3. Enter your device passcode and tap Reset All Settings again to confirm.

After the reset procedure, visit the Date & Time pane and check if you can make any adjustments manually. You most likely should be able to do that. However, you must also re-connect to any Wi-Fi networks and re-configure your device preferences from scratch all over again.

Remember to Make Any Periodic Adjustments

Manually changing the time on your iPhone is fine, but you do have to remember to make any periodic adjustments depending on your time zone. If you start encountering issues with any apps or services, you should fall back on allowing the device itself to set the time automatically or try your best to re-correct it yourself.
