Today we will be discussing how to use your PC as cloud storage. Cloud storage is an online/virtual storage for files and folders.
Cloud storage providers allow users to upload any size and type of computer file, only e-mail attachments usually have limitations.
Over the years, many organizations have come up with their own solutions to Cloud Storage and Data Privacy.
Although any remote storage is used for file upload during backup, providers dedicated to backup as a service (BaaS) usually perform automatic uploading and store multiple versions of files.
Professional cloud storage services specifically designed for sharing such as Dropbox and Box make it easy to invite others to download files.
Some storage providers are known for storing the same files in sync on every device owned by a particular user.
Companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft use their cloud synchronization as a way to retain users within a fold.
Even some hardware producers use cloud services as a bonus when selling external hard drives.
Types of Cloud Storage
Cloud storage providers that retain data for automatic downloading to the application or Web page of a user, fall under the “content management” group.
There are basically three types of services related to Cloud, they are:
SaaS (Software as a Service) – it allows users to access other available public clouds of large organizations in order to store their data such as Gmail, PaaS.
PaaS (Platform as a Service) – It is used for apps or software hosting on other public clouds: for example, Google App Engine which hosts apps of users.
IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) – it is used for the virtualization of any machine.
Arguably the best PC cloud storage software solution at the moment is Sync. It boasts great storage since you may automatically back up your files in one centralized location.
In spite of that, rest assured that they are synced across all of your PCs and devices. This means that you can access them while on the desk or take a peek when having a walk in the park.
Even more, the standout feature is how easily accessible the service is even for those who don’t have a Sync account. To be more precise, you can send files to anyone, regardless of using this service or not.
As for its enterprise-grade infrastructure, this means that you can also fully trust Sync to keep your files safe and secure.
Clean, user-friendly design
Increased security for confidential data
Granular user permissions
Never collect or sell app usage information or private data
Dedicated Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android apps
In-house support from Premium plans
If you value simplicity, security, and power, then Sync is the best PC cloud storage software to use today!

Some of you may know that I am the creator and sole member of what I call the 10,000 steps a day challenge, a self-imposed goal of walking at least 10,000 steps per day. I started with a goal of 6,000 steps per day back in 2024, and increased that goal by 1,000 every new year, a goal I reach every single day, no matter how busy my schedule may be, no matter what the weather is like outside, and no matter my health condition.
When I talk to people about the 10,000 steps a day challenge, a question that often comes up is how I track the amount of steps I take. Surprisingly, most people don’t know this is something newer iPhones can do straight out of the box.
iDB readers are probably aware of that feature, but for those that might not be, or those who want to share the existence of this feature with friends and family, we will go over this today as I talk about how you can use an iPhone as a pedometer. The chip that makes it all possible
The best part of the motion coprocessor is that it can collect data without having a meaningful impact on your battery usage. As a matter of fact, if your iPhone runs out of battery, or if you manually shut it down, the motion coprocessor will keep collecting data and offload that data once the device is powered back on.Using an iPhone as a pedometer
The good news is, if you’re using an iPhone 5s or newer, you do have that tiny chip embedded in your device, and you pretty much have nothing to do but start walking or running to effectively use your iPhone as a step counter. The trick here is not to have your iPhone act as a pedometer, because it already does. The trick is to find out how you can get access to that step count, and more.
There are a couple of ways to keep track of your step count on your iPhone. The first one is to use Apple’s own Health application. The second option is to use a third-party application from the App Store. We’ll go over both options.Using Apple’s Health app to keep track of steps count
The Health app is a stock application on iOS, so if you have a newer iPhone, you automatically have that app installed on your device.
On your iPhone, simply launch the Health application, and you may already see a chart of steps on your main Dashboard, as seen on this screenshot.
If not, tap on the Health Data tab at the bottom of the screen, then select Fitness, then Steps. Finally toggle the “Show on Dashboard” button to display your step count on your main dashboard.
From the Dashboard, you can keep track of your steps by day, week, month, or year.
The best part of using the Health application is that it is entirely free and readily available on your iPhone. But to me, the main downside is that the Health app isn’t really pretty and doesn’t always give a great visual representation of your steps. This is where third-party applications can come in handy.Using Pedometer++ to track your step count
Before owning an Apple Watch and keeping count of steps directly from it, I used Pedometer++, a free download from the App Store, and admittedly one of the best pedometer apps for iPhone. It is free, simple, and to the point, which I particularly appreciate.
Specifically, my favorite feature of Pedometer++ is how it displays step data in a very clear fashion using a bar graph. The tallest the bar, the more steps you have. And unlike Apple’s Health app, it clearly shows how many steps you’ve been walking each day, something you have to hunt down when you use the Health app.
Pedometer++ also lets you set up a daily step goal. If you’re far below the step goal, your bar will show in red. It will turn orange if you get closer, and green once you’ve reached the goal.
Still, Pedometer++ is not perfect. I find it to often report step data much higher than what Apple reports in the Health app. I don’t want to argue Apple’s tracking is better than Pedometer++’s, but as a conservative measure, I like to base my daily step goal of 10,000 steps on Apple’s own data.
As an example based on the screenshots used in this post, you can see that the Health app reports 2,393 steps for me so far today, while Pedometer++ reports 2,645. That’s a 10% difference! At the end of the day, it might not be a big deal to you if all you’re looking for is a rough estimates of your walking steps.
To be completely fair, Pedometer++’s developer David Smith explains on his blog that he believes Apple way of counting steps when the user has both an iPhone and an Apple Watch may be skewed, which could be the reason why I am seeing some discrepancy in the data being reported. If Smith uses the same motion coprocessor to get the raw data as the Health app uses, he actually tweaks this data with his own algorithm when he detects an Apple Watch is being used in conjunction with an iPhone to track step count. Still, I put a little more trust in Apple’s army of engineers, and again, I’d rather be conservative when it comes to my step count.
There is a plethora of similar applications in the App Store, including Runtastic Pedometer Step Counter, and Steps Pedometer & Step Counter, so if Pedometer++ doesn’t seem to work well for you, you might want to try something else.Tip for getting more accurate data
Although incredibly smart, the motion coprocessor of your iPhone can be more accurate at counting steps if you put your iPhone in your pocket when walking. Having it in a purse or backpack will work too, but it might not be as accurate as if the phone was in the pocket of your pants or shorts.
If you’re trying to count your steps when running, consider using an armband for your iPhone. This will also increase accuracy of step count.Do you have a daily step goal?
They say that everyone should walk 10,000 steps a day, which for most people would equal to about one and a half hour of walking. I find this goal hard to reach, which is why I started by setting myself a more realistic goal of 6,000 steps a day in 2024, and slowly increased that daily goal over time.

Over the years, we’ve seen Internet Service Providers (ISPs) roll out a special service for their customers. If you use an ISP-provided router, it will act as a hotspot that other customers can use for free. People who aren’t customers can buy internet time and use your router like a regular hotspot.
Usually, in return, you have to allow other users of the ISP to use your router as a hotspot, too. But can people slow down your internet speed while using it; or worse, use it for malicious purposes? Can People Snoop On Your Wi-Fi?
With strangers connecting to your router, can you be sure that they won’t pry on your traffic? While it’s true that people are connecting to your router via the hotspot, that doesn’t mean they’re using your personal network.
Advanced routers have the ability to broadcast more than one network. When your router is in hotspot mode, it’s broadcasting two networks at the same time; your personal network, and a hotspot network. When you scan for Wi-Fi signals, you should see two SSIDs; your personal one, and a generic hotspot name.
Despite being two separate entries, these are both coming from your router. It’s just that it has separated your private network away from the hotspot traffic. As such, when people use the hotspot on your router, they’re not using the same network as your private one. They won’t be able to access the computers and devices on your personal network, so there’s no need to worry. Can People Use Up Your Bandwidth?
Even if the other users are using a different network than you, it’s true that all the connections go through the same road from your home to the ISP. Not only does this mean that other users share your bandwidth, but perhaps those users use up any data caps you have.
First of all, your data cap is fine! The ISP can separate the traffic you generate from the traffic generated by others. As such, even if someone uses the hotspot to download files, it won’t count toward your data cap.
Your bandwidth, however, is a different story. The connection between your router and your ISP doesn’t magically double its bandwidth just because your router has two networks!
ISPs acknowledge this, and they claim that your private traffic will have priority over that of the hotspot traffic. Essentially, if someone is downloading a file using the hotspot and you begin watching a Netflix movie, the ISP will give priority to your movie and reduce the hotspot user’s download speed.
As such, you should technically not feel any difference while you use your private network. If you’re uncertain, however, you should turn the feature off so you can have the bandwidth to yourself. What About Illegal Downloading?
People connecting to the hotspot require an account to use it. This is either the account tied to the ISP for free usage or an account created so the user can load internet time onto it. As such, all traffic from that account is tied to that person’s personal data.
As such, if someone uses your hotspot for illegal reasons, their traffic won’t be tied to you. It will instead lead the investigation to the account the user made to use the hotspot in the first place.Hotspot or Not-Spot?
Leaving this feature on is a case of personal preference. People connecting to your router as a hotspot shouldn’t be able to see your traffic, neither will they drain your data caps or use up your bandwidth. From a technical standpoint, there’s little danger in letting others use your router as a hotspot.
As such, if you like the ISP’s hotspot plan and want to be a part of it, leave it on. However, if you don’t use the hotspots and suspect that the bandwidth prioritization perhaps isn’t as good as it could be, you can turn the hotspot feature off and revert it back to a regular router.
What about you — would you keep this feature on or turn it off? Let us know below.

Planning to work as a digital nomad on a holiday? Don’t head out without learning these effective tips on how to remote wipe laptop data for your Windows PC. If you thought your valuable data was safe with a touch ID or face-recognition software, all a thief has to do is insert your laptop hard drive in another system.
However, with a little bit of planning, you can be ahead of the game. By taking these simple precautions, you can remote wipe your hard disk and make your Windows laptop pretty much useless for any burglar out there.Currently Available Options in Windows
First, if you are using Windows 10, you must locate your laptop’s GPS coordinates using the Windows key with the “Find my Device” option. This technique will not work with previous Windows versions. You will notice a tiny “Bitlocker OFF” icon right below your device.
Next, simply turn BitLocker ON to encrypt sensitive files, folders and even entire disks. The procedure takes a bit to get used to, but you’ll be assured with the knowledge that your files are now secure with AES-128 encryption. The encrypted folders can now only be viewed with a password or a recovery key.
However, such a useful functionality comes with a caveat: it is not available for Windows 10 Home, Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 systems. Unless you upgrade to Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, Microsoft doesn’t have your back.Remote Wipe Laptop Data with Prey Anti-Theft
Prey, a freemium laptop, smartphone and electronic device-monitoring solution, manages to recreate the functionalities and technical strength of the above solutions.
After downloading and a guided installation, you will be asked to set up your Prey account as a new user. You may also log in with your Facebook or Google accounts.
Tracking your device location with Prey works more efficiently than Windows’ “Find my Device” option. The utility uses Geo IP, Wi-Fi triangulation and GPS to access your lost or missing laptop.
After you track your device, you can choose to “wipe” all data including documents, cookies, emails, Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive information.
Not all missing laptop incidents can be pinned to theft. If you simply forgot your laptop at a friend’s place, there is another option to remotely “lock your device.”
Tips for Recovery: You can also report your device as “missing.” This means that as soon as a thief opens your laptop, you will start receiving evidence reports, pictures, coordinates, and active and nearby Wi-Fi.
It is always useful to set up a guest account so that the thief can use your laptop to access the Internet. Once done, you can use Prey to send them warning messages along with a police complaint.
However, if you lose your laptop in a foreign country, your only option is to make data backup in Cloud. Use DropBox, Google Drive or OneDrive.Remote Wipe Laptop Data with DriveStrike
DriveStrike is another relatively lesser-known web utility that offers the same remote wiping facilities as Prey. Their monthly plans are substantially cheaper. It is also much easier to use. Conclusion
Laptop thefts are way more common than you may imagine. Be it at airports, malls, vehicles, cafes, hotel lobbies, or backpacker hostels, you may luck out almost anywhere. It can be the most unpleasant thought ever, some quick-fingered thief deciding to pick you clean just when you let your guard down.
With the tips discussed in this blog, you may not have to worry about a lost or stolen laptop again.
