Suggested December 2023 Iphone 14 May Bring Satellite Connectivity For Emergency Texting And Sos Features

This year’s upcoming iPhone 14 models is rumored to add satellite connectivity for SOS response features and emergency contacts anywhere there’s satellite coverage.

Apple could bring satellite connectivity to the iPhone as soon as this year

As for the Apple Watch, it would pick up the same feature in the future

Satellite connectivity would be limited to emergency features

When will iPhone and Apple Watch gain satellite features?

According to a new report, the iPhone 14 models coming this year could be the first models to introduce satellite features. The company would then “eventually” bring satellite connectivity to your wrist with future Apple Watch models.

Mark Gurman, Bloomberg:

The company is also working to eventually bring satellite connectivity to the Apple Watch, setting the stage for emergency texting and SOS response features. It’s planning to release those capabilities on iPhone as early as this year. The technology would allow users to send text messages to emergency personnel over satellite networks and report incidents.

While Apple might expand on those features at a later stage, don’t expect to make regular phone calls or VoIP calls via satellites anytime soon because this is still prohibitively expensive for average users.

The satellite features would be limited to focusing on helping customers handle crisis scenarios, as the article states. On the downside, those features are unlikely to be available in every country Apple’s products are available due to local regulations, satellite availability etc. Read: How to use Emergency SOS on the Apple Watch

How the iPhone’s Messages may handle satellite features

This isn’t the first time we heard future iPhones would include satellite features. The same author reporting for the same publication said in August 2023 that the iPhone would eventually bring satellite connectivity to the mix. To reiterate, that does not mean the next iPhone would double as a satellite phone that could be used on North Pole or anywhere without cellular coverage. Just like today’s report, the 2023 one said satellite connectivity would permit iPhone customers to send texts to first responders and report crashes in areas without cellular coverage, that’s it.

Mark Gurman, Bloomberg, in August 2023:

The first component, dubbed Emergency Message via Satellite, will let users text emergency services and contacts over a satellite network when there’s no cell signal available. That feature will be integrated into the Messages app as a third protocol—alongside the standard SMS and iMessage—and appear with gray message bubbles instead of green or blue. The second feature will be a tool to report major emergencies, such as plane crashes and sinking ships, also using satellite networks.

And this:

The texting-via-satellite tool, codenamed Stewie inside Apple, will restrict messages to a shorter length. The texts will automatically push through to an emergency contact’s phone, even if the do-not-disturb setting is on. One planned design will let a user send the message by typing “Emergency SOS” where they would usually input a contact name. In addition to delivering texts, the service may eventually be able to handle some phone calls too.

It’ll be interesting seeing whether this is something that could be added to the iPhone and Apple Watch with a little help from Qualcomm. At any rate, a special chip would be needed for communication with low-earth orbit satellites.

Power Bi Challenge 14 – Emergency Services Analytics

We’ve been very busy here at Enterprise DNA as we continue to level up our content so that all of you can maximize more learning opportunities as far as Power BI is concerned. Of course, one of the best ways for you to put all of this knowledge to practice is by joining our Power BI Challenge.

We just concluded the 13th round, which was all about acing report documentation. This time, we’re moving on to emergency services analytics.

Power BI has seen quite a number of updates in the past few months, and we’re excited to see how these improvements can impact the tool’s real-world application. That’s why for this challenge, we looked into one of the most dynamic and in-demand industries, which is emergency services.

The data is anonymized and random, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from creating a compelling report that tells a clear story of what emergency services are doing well and what areas they can further improve.

To help you come up with deeper analytics, we’ve also put together a few things that you should consider in your report.

Deadline for submission is on July 11.

The Power BI Challenge is an initiative that we started last year not just to add some fun, friendly competition around the Enterprise DNA Forum, but also to explore just how endless the possibilities are when it comes to using Power BI as a tool. Seeing that this is the 14th round and that we’ve managed to present unique real-life scenarios that cover a different industry each time, this certainly proves how dynamic Power BI truly is.

The challenges have fostered a culture of collaboration and sharing throughout the community. We started out with active members of our Enterprise DNA Forum participating, but we have since been seeing non-members jumping in as well.

It has truly been inspiring seeing a lot of beginners plucking up the courage to join their first challenge and then seeing their submissions improving until they submit reports that rival that of our experts by their 3rd or 4th round. This is why we continue to encourage those who have been thinking twice about joining just because they feel they lack the experience to do so. There’s no better learning experience than hands-on application.

Winners get a range of different prizes, especially for first-time participants.

Winning Enterprise DNA Member – free membership that can be passed on to a non-member who will benefit from the member-exclusive resources

Winning Non-Enterprise DNA Member – free membership

Most Innovative Entry – open to both members and non-members; overall winner can also claim this title, with a free membership as the prize

First Time Participant Winner – must be a member to qualify; winners get to choose their prize from this list of tools and resources that can help them further improve their reports and dashboards

All submissions also become part of our Power BI Showcase, where Enterprise DNA members can download and use them for some hands-on practice.

How do we judge who wins? We just stick to the 4 pillars that make a great Power BI report:

Data loading and transformation

Data modeling

DAX calculations

Reports and visualizations

So keep these in mind when you work on your submission. Staying true to these four elements can help you snag those prizes.

Here’s how you can join the challenge.

How To Set Up An Emergency Sos On Your Galaxy Smartphone

If your job requires you to work in the field on your own, you’ve likely asked yourself this question before: How would I call for help if an emergency or accident occurred?

The number of employees working alone is on the rise. By 2025, more than 605,000 workers in North America are expected to carry specialized lone worker safety devices that use GPS and cellular technology, according to Berg Insight. Out in the field, these workers perform a wide variety of tasks, from providing home care to managing properties to inspecting utility assets.

In an emergency, these workers need an easy way to alert someone who can help. Fortunately, help is right at their fingertips, thanks to the emergency SOS feature on Samsung Galaxy smartphones such as the Galaxy S22 or rugged Galaxy XCover Pro.

In addition to making workers more connected and productive, their Samsung smartphones running Android can also be quickly set up to provide emergency contacts with information so they can identify the sender’s exact location and understand their crisis situation.

An SOS message, along with a link to the sender’s location, indicated by an address and a map

Photos of the scene from both the front and rear cameras of the device

A five-second audio clip

This information can be critical to ensuring a lone worker quickly receives the right help in an emergency.  Galaxy phones can also be set up to automatically place a call to your emergency contact.

How to set up emergency SOS

Here’s how to set up the emergency SOS feature on a Samsung smartphone (some steps may differ depending on Android OS version):

Pull down your notification bar and open “Settings”

Scroll down and select “Safety and emergency”

Select “Send SOS messages”

Toggle it on and choose your emergency contacts (who will receive the message)

Choose if you want the SOS to be triggered by pressing the side button 3 or 4 times

Select what you want your phone to do when you trigger the SOS

Auto call someone: Automatically calls your emergency contact after sending the SOS message

Attach pictures: Automatically attaches pictures from your front and rear cameras to your SOS message

Attach audio recording: Attaches a five-second audio recording to your SOS message to give your emergency contact more information on what has happened

If your WiFi or location is turned off at the time you try to send the alert, your phone will automatically activate these features first in order to share your location. Your location will continue to be shared with your emergency contacts for 24 hours. They’ll get a new notification every 30 minutes if your location changes.

How to turn off emergency SOS

If you find that you are accidentally triggering the SOS or want to turn it off for another reason, you can do so in just a few taps:

Open “Settings” and go to “Safety and emergency”

Tap “Send SOS messages” and toggle it off

You can also adjust the SOS trigger from three to four presses of the side key to reduce the chance of false alarms

Sharing your medical information with first responders

For workers with medical conditions, it’s a good idea to store this information in your Galaxy smartphone so first responders can provide appropriate treatment if you are incapacitated. To save your medical information:

Open “Settings” and select “Safety and emergency”

Tap “Medical info”

Note down any conditions, allergies and current medications in the fields provided

First responders will be able to find this information even if your phone is locked, simply by tapping the “Emergency call” tab on the home screen.

Supporting lone workers

Organizations in fields as diverse as home healthcare, education, utilities, hospitality, real estate, field services, oil and gas, security and more are increasingly seeking better ways to increase security and support for lone workers through features like emergency SOS. Some also rely on these solutions to comply with occupational safety regulations and lower employee insurance costs.

What “Sos Only” On Iphone Means, & How To Fix Sos Mode

What “SOS Only” on iPhone Means, & How to Fix SOS Mode

Occasionally when using iPhone, you may see the cellular service status bars disappear and be replaced by “SOS” or “SOS Only”, or you may see “SOS Only” in Control Center.

What does SOS Only Mean on iPhone?

If you see the “SOS or “SOS Only” text in the iPhone status bar, this means the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network that is able to use typical cellular connectivity. However, SOS / SOS Only does imply that you can continue to make emergency calls from the iPhone.

You may see the SOS or SOS Only message on the iPhone when you’re out of a service area, in an area with poor cellular connectivity or coverage, in rural areas, tunnels, and in other situations where the iPhone is unable to connect to a cellular network.

SOS and SOS Only differs from ‘No Service’ in that SOS means you can still make emergency calls to 911 or the equivalent, but “No Service” means there is quite literally no service coverage available at all, not even for emergency.

Why does iPhone say SOS / SOS Only?

You might see the SOS Only message because of one of the following reasons:

Insufficient cell signal: If the iPhone is in an area with bad network coverage or no cellular network coverage, the iPhone may unable to connect to your carrier’s network.

Cellular network/carrier issues: Occasionally there are issues with your cellular carrier and their network, in which case you may see the iPhone display the “SOS Only” message in the status bar

SIM card issues: If the SIM card used on the iPhone is damaged or not placed correctly, the iPhone may not be able to connect to the carrier cellular network

iOS software issues: Rarely, software issues can an issue with the ability of iPhone to join a cellular network

Random quirk: Rarely, some randomly occurring quirk with the device, network, cell tower, or another factor can cause the SOS message to display

How to Fix “SOS Only” on iPhone

If you discover that iPhone is displaying the “SOS Only” status or says “SOS” in the status bar or Control Center, you may be able to resolve the problem by doing the following:

Physically move locations to make sure you are in an area with good cellular network coverage

Restarting the iPhone may resolve the SOS Only issue. To restart any iPhone with Face ID, press Volume Up, Volume Down, then press and hold the Power/Lock button until you see the  Apple logo on screen. In a few moments the iPhone will boot back up and attempt to join the network again

If you use a SIM card, make sure the SIM card is dry, inserted and seated properly, and that it is not damaged

Contact your cellular carrier if you continue to experience problems with cellular service, like always seeing the SOS or SOS Only message on the device, or if the SOS message appears when coverage is good and other troubleshooting approaches have failed

Are You Waiting For The Iphone 14?

It wasn’t too long ago that, every other year, we’d get an “S” variant for Apple’s iPhone. It was a very, very obvious way to tell the world that this was an “iterative” update. Not that that’s a bad thing, mind you. Not by any means. But, now, at a glance, it would appear that Apple’s moved away from that plan of attack.

But that’s not really the case, right? For those who keep tabs on this sort of thing, we know that the iPhone 13 isn’t so much a huge update compared to the iPhone 12 as it is a pretty minimal uptick in features and design. Again, not a bad thing! It’s just how it is.

This year is a little different, though. If you’ll recall, there have been rumors of an iPhone adopting a punch-hole design for quite some time now. And, more recently, we started to hear that the iPhone 14 would be the handset to welcome this change. Things got interesting when a leak showed us what the iPhone 14 might look like, with its notch-less hardware, no camera bump, and more.

It’s a lot of changes! And when you take into account that there are a lot of iPhone users out there who would like to see the notch go away, the iPhone 14 is probably a very bright spot in the future. And maybe even a reason to just go ahead and skip this year’s iteration of the popular smartphone and wait it out.

But, this is a familiar argument. A very familiar train of thought. Apple is going to keep releasing newer, better iPhones as the years trudge along. If you wait now, you could just keep waiting “forever.”

I’ll admit, I was on the fence with an upgrade this year. I don’t know why, maybe it was the fact that this year just felt truncated in just about every single way, but it genuinely felt like I just bought the iPhone 12 Pro. Plus, I really like the Pacific Blue. But, the new Sierra Blue definitely caught my eye, and after Apple’s event wrapped up I was leaning more towards an upgrade after all. What sold me is the fact I’m on a yearly upgrade plan anyway, so I had to fork over just $35 to upgrade and get a new iPhone.

This refresh does feel different because of the iPhone 14-sized shadow looming over it. If these latest rumors are to be believed, the iPhone 14 is going to be the hardware redesign a lot of people have been waiting for. Titanium hardware, no camera bump, the hole-punch front-facing camera (which means even more changes to the TrueDepth Camera).

Then again, if you don’t follow any rumors or give any credence to leaks, then all there really is to consider this year is if there’s enough in the iPhone 13 to warrant an upgrade from whatever smartphone you’re currently using. And that’s really what it should come down to, right?

Where do you stand with the iPhone 13 this year? Have you already pre-ordered? Are you waiting for the reviews to fall in? Or are you skipping this year entirely in favor of next year’s model?
