Suggested January 2024 Is Dependency On Innovation Enough Or Decoding The Layers Of It Is Necessary?

With the emergence of technology, innovation is getting into the layers of businesses. But is the same happening the other way round? It is surprising to observe that companies these days are relying on innovation but fail in the successful development and implementation of it. Companies all across the globe are investing approximately $1 trillion on innovation per annum, but sadly at least 10 percent of it ($100 billion) is wasted. Most of the companies are trying to follow the path of big companies like Google, SpaceX and imitating their innovation trajectory. It has been observed over the years that imitation method hardly works in terms of innovation. It would beneficial for such enterprises to discover tools and structures which suits their agenda the best and satisfies their requirements, strategies, and approach. These companies can encompass some steps to get their innovation entity to act. The identification of the right kind of innovation is required to achieve a variety of goals. The range of goals can be from reducing undesirable costs and adding value to the product preventing it from possible disruption via competitors and developing futuristic models. The umbrella of innovation covers a large area including – fresh products, better backend processes, employing new-age technology to build efficient platforms and enhance customer experience. In this race, one needs to keep market status in mind too. The innovation should be market facing which involves new products, their reach to customers and potential disruption they could cause. Another aspect to bring into consideration is the convention. To cope with the disruptive market, it is not necessary to ignore conventional approach completely, sometimes traditional compliance-centric culture can also be beneficial. In order to prevent that, some companies tend to separately start their innovative unit to make it work simultaneously. Discovering the best source of innovation in quintessential. Considering the fact that the world is too small and you are no unique, you have to make an extra effort to produce unique. It is absolutely possible that the ideas on which you are working are already produced or in the process by some other organization around the world. Here you need to bring machination of developing sources into the picture. The company needs to understand where is that happening and how to generate a productive approach to have access to what is required by you. In such a situation, there can be two forms of sources – internal and external. •  Internal Sources: A lot of companies discover internal competitions which help they cultivate new ideas and concepts to drive innovation. The existing staff sometimes prove to be the needful resource for the company. Even in some cases, some employees can fetch funding for new companies in the market. •  External Sources: External sources can be created through various styles of partnerships such as the partnership with academia, acquiring new businesses or start-ups or collaborating with sponsors or innovators based on demographic approach. Companies can encourage other innovators and helping hands to work on the innovation while behaving as a backend support themselves. Additionally, they can also indulge in multi-company or industry-wide collaborations. Innovation is no magic that it will happen overnight, it also requires a process to produce outcomes like other business ideas. One needs to understand that big innovative ideas don’t get implemented themselves, they need to go through a process to general potential results. It is not necessary that the process of innovation operate as per the company’s conventional workflow, it might involve certain other procedures and tools to perform effectively.

What Phone Is “Good Enough” In 2023?

Don’t skimp on the processor

Your phone’s processor is responsible for pretty much everything that it does and I would strongly argue that this is the key component to pay attention to if you don’t want to end up with a frustrating experience, waiting for apps that freeze on the simplest commands.

We won’t dive into too much technical stuff here, but one trend you’ll notice among lower cost smartphones is the prevalence of ARM’s Cortex-A53 CPU core, which is designed for low power consumption. On their own, these cores don’t offer a lot of performance, and I would say that even in quad-core configurations this design is a little slow for multi-tasking. The Moto E (2nd gen) I own often pauses for a second or two when switching apps. However, Android scales well with multiple cores, and octa-core Cortex-A53 processors offer snappy enough performance for most tasks.

As a general rule, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 617, MediaTek’s P20, Samsung’s Exynos 7 Octa series, and HiSilicon’s Kirin 935, or better are all safe bets for good performance. But feel free to spend more for faster gaming and multitasking experiences.

An octa-core A53 design is the baseline that you should look for these days, and any processors boasting more powerful A57, A72, A73 or Qualcomm Kryo CPU cores will simply fly without worries, if you’re after that extra juice for multi-tasking and gaming. Gamers may also want to pay closer attention to the graphics processing unit (GPU) includes with the chip. Avoid mid-range and even flagship chips from 3 or 4 years ago, you can easily find superior midrange chips today.

SoC showdown 2023: Snapdragon 821 vs Exynos 8890 vs MediaTek Helio X25 vs Kirin 960

Features

As a general rule of thumb, processors from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6XX series or above are going to offer smooth experiences for your day to day browsing and basic gaming. MediaTek’s P20 and X20, Samsung’s Exynos 7 Octa series, along with HiSilicon’s Kirin 935 or better are also perfectly suitable performers for the vast majority of regular use cases.

Memory, memory, memory

Alongside the processor, the other half of performance is RAM. Fortunatley RAM is quite low cost these days, and you can easily pick up phones with 2, 3, and even 4GB on a reasonable budget. We would recommend 2GB as the bare minimum these days, but take 3GB for some headroom to ensure smooth multitasking, if you can get it.

For storing apps, pictures, music, video, and what have you, you’ll want a decent stack of flash memory too. The table below shows a breakdown of roughly what you can fit on various storage sizes, and if you pick up a phone with a microSD card slot you can further augment this space.

Does Android use more memory than iOS? – Gary explains

Features

Camera and video features

While processing hardware is relatively easy to compare on paper, judging camera quality from a spec sheet is much harder, if not impossible. Camera resolution gives you an idea about how fine the image can be, but it doesn’t tell you very much about the quality of the picture. Likewise, pixel size and lens aperture give you an idea about how much light the camera can capture, but doesn’t tell you how well the software will process colors or sharpness.

Fast charging, fingerprints, and more

In summary, we know that we can’t have everything on a budget, but there are some areas that we really shouldn’t skimp on. A reasonable processor paired up with a decent amount of RAM and internal memory ensures that we won’t become frustrated by the day operations of our phone. At the very least, a modern octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage is a strong starting point.

We didn’t mention anything about software in this post, because quite frankly there are way too many OEM skins and variants to cover. However, at the very least you should pick up a phone with Android 6.0 Marshmallow onboard right now as the minimum, preferably with an update path to Nougat already mapped out. In the second half of 2023, we should certainly see more affordable handsets packing Nougat land on store shelves.

If we’re looking to get the best features for our money, mid-range phones can be readily found packing fingerprint scanners, NFC, fast charging, and decent camera setups. Prioritising which of these features is most important to you can result in some excellent choices without breaking the bank. For a look at some of the best on the market, check out the HONOR 6X, ZTE Axon Mini, and the Moto G4 Plus, as just a few examples.

New mid-ranger vs old flagship: which is the better deal?

Do you have any particular features that you look out for when buying a lower cost handset? What do you think passes as the minimum to expect from a good smartphone these days?

Excel Text Function – Handy But Limited…Or Is It?

At first glance the Excel TEXT function appears quite limited. Its purpose is to convert numbers to text in a specific/custom format.

There are two key points here:

The numbers become text. This means you can’t use them in any math type of formulas.

On the upside you can format the numbers anyway you want…almost!

Hold up!

Why would you want to convert a number into text when it means you then can’t use that number in any math calculations/formulas?

Wouldn’t you just format the cell with the number format you want?

The answer is ‘yes’ most of the time, but I’ll show you a clever use for it in a moment.

Excel TEXT Function

First, the syntax is:

TEXT(value, format_text)

Where the value is the number or reference to the cell containing the number you want to format, and format_text is the format you want, enclosed in double quotes.

By submitting your email address you agree that we can email you our Excel newsletter.

Please enter a valid email address.

Download the Excel Workbook . Note: This is a .xlsx file please ensure your browser doesn’t change the file extension on download.

Let’s look at some examples.

Excel TEXT Formula Examples

Example 1 – Format as a Currency.

If you don’t know the character codes to use you can refer to the Format Cells dialog box (CTRL+1 to open it) to get the number format ‘code’ (that is the $#,##0.00 part) you need:

You can use any number formats for the format_text argument that you find in the Format Cells dialog box under the ‘Number’ tab.

Or you can write your own custom format.

If you’re new to custom number formats check out my comprehensive guide to custom number formats.

Example 2 – Formatted as a date with hyphens instead of the Excel standard forward slash.

Note: 41640 in cell A5 is the serial number for the date 1st Jan 2014. More on understanding dates in Excel here.

Example 3 – Display day of the week.

Again we’ve taken a date in cell A6 and with the TEXT function we’ve only displayed the day of the week. If you wanted to display the full name of the day you would use “dddd”.

Example 4 – Add leading zeros to a number.

This is handy for invoice numbers or other numbers/codes that require a leading zero.

Limitations of TEXT Formulas

As I mentioned at the beginning, the above examples all convert the numbers in column A to text in column B.

Examples 3 and 4 are ok formatted as text (the day of the week and leading zeros) as they are unlikely to ever be used in a math formula so having them as text won’t cause you a problem.

But it’s not ideal for examples 1 and 2 (format as currency and date), as it’s likely you’ll want to perform a calculation using those numbers at some point in your worksheet’s life.

A better option for examples 1 and 2 is to just apply the number format to the cell in column A.

Combine Text and Numbers in One Cell

I think the best use of the TEXT function is to use it to combine text and numbers in one cell.

As you can see in cell A16 below:

In the formula bar you can see I’ve used the ampersand symbol (&) to combine the text, “Sales up” and “Since 2010”, with the number returned by the TEXT function, which I’ve formatted as a percentage:

="Sales up "&

TEXT(B14/B11-1,"0%")

&" Since 2010"

Which results in one text string:

Sales up 95% Since 2010

You’ll notice in this example I’ve also performed a calculation for the value argument of the TEXT function, which is then formatted as a percentage:

TEXT(

B14/B11-1

,"0%")

Which results in:

95%

The benefit of using a formula for the value argument is that any changes in the data will automatically be reflected in my statement in cell A16.

Bonus Trick

Now you can link cell A16 to your chart title and not only will the chart update if the numbers change, but so will the title:

To link the chart title to cell A16:

Press ENTER

Crazy TEXT Function Trick

At the very beginning I said the TEXT function converts a number to text which means you can’t perform any math calculations on the results.

However, in this video Mike Girvin, of Excel Is Fun, shows a crazy trick (at 3:30) with the TEXT function to convert a date into the right format. Even MrExcel doesn’t believe it will work:

Explanation: in the video Mike performs a calculation on the text function which in turn converts the value in the cell back to a number.

Similarly, you can also convert a cell containing a text function back to a number by multiplying the cell by 1, or add 0, or use the VALUE function, to name a few.

Note: There are some limitations to this. For example you can’t convert the text ‘Wed’ in example 3 above back to a number, but you can for the other examples.

There Is Not Enough Memory To Complete This Operation!

After your device has aged a little, during everyday activities you can see an error pop up that displays the message “Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again.”

This can seriously hamper your device performance and your productivity in general. Here I will discuss the ‘there is not enough memory to complete this operation’ error and the possible methods to fix it easily.

If you see this error during copying files, the possible reason may be a Desktop Heap Limitation. I will talk about that too below.

If you are running out of RAM to perform your tasks, here are some methods to resolve it.

Too many times, there may an app that takes up a lot of system resources that prevent other tasks from being completed. If you can figure out which application may be misbehaving, you can fix the error by terminating temporarily or removing the application from your system.

Open Task manager from the WinX menu (Press Win + X to open WinX menu) and check the Processes to see which application is using up too much system resources. If you have browser extensions installed, you can turn them off if you don’t need them in the immediate.

Pro Tip: use a power uninstalling software like IObit or Revo uninstaller to remove the software from your system. (Read here)

When the available physical RAM module isn’t enough to handle the tasks that you are performing on your device, your system uses a paging file (virtual memory) in order to temporarily store the additional data thrown at your memory module.

More often than not, this paging file is managed improperly, so you must manage it manually and allocate it enough storage space to handle the extra data. Here is how you can do that in Windows 10:

In Search, type Performance.

5. In the Virtual Memory window, choose a disk that has extra unallocated space.

Caution: DO NOT SELECT THE SYSTEM PARTITION. SSDs are also not preferred generally.

9. Restart your PC to apply the changes.

Doing this will increase the paging file storage available and lessen the burden on your memory modules.

The applications on your system with every update become more and more powerful and require additional memory place to perform their functions smoothly. If the memory modules aren’t enough and there is not enough RAM to handle the tasks, you need additional memory modules to keep your system updated and perform smoothly.

There are some basic things you need to keep in mind during buying an additional module. Check the clock-speed of your processor and see the compatible RAM clock-speeds and sizes supported before buying a new chip.

If you are running out of storage memory, here are some methods to resolve it.

If you haven’t utilized available storage memory correctly, you may see this error when the space in your system directory is running out.

Allocating space from these partitions to the system partition may help you resolve the issue.

[Read how to manage disk partitions here.]

Note: You may want to create a System Restore point before making any registry changes.

The allocated Desktop heaps store User Interface objects such as windows, menus, and hooks. When an application requires a user interface object, functions within chúng tôi are called to allocate those objects.  If an application does not depend on chúng tôi it does not consume desktop heap.

In simpler words, you need to increase the allocated desktop heaps to make more memory available for your tasks.

Here is how you can increase the Desktop Heap Limitation using Registry Editor:

From the Run (Win + R) dialogue, type regedit, and press Enter.

ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerSubSystems

4. You need to change the values for SharedSection. Here is how it should look:

5. Change the second and third values in the SharedSection according to your operating system:

If you are on an x64 processor, change the second value to 20480 and the third value to 1024

6. Here is how it should look now.

Caution: Don’t set the second value to more than 20480 KB.

Asus Zenbook 3 Review: Is Power And Luxury Enough?

I was lucky enough to get my hands on this amazing looking device much before the launch and here is what I feel initially about it.

Zenbook 3 Specifications Asus Zenbook 3 Design & Build

If you have been following the Zenbook series from the first iteration, you must be aware that these Zenbooks are in direct competition with the Apple’s Macbooks. As far as Zenbook 3 is concerned, it looks stunning straight out of the box. I am using the Royal Blue colour variant of the Zenbook 3 and I find it very striking to carry aside. The lid has the same Zen design with thin concentric circles that keeps “the Zenfeel” alive.

Although the sleek and shiny body looks amazing, it has its own drawbacks as well. You do not get a lot of connectivity options other than a USB-Type C port. Other than the USB-Type C port, it has one 3.5mm audio jack on the left side. To make it more convenient, Asus has included an USB-Type C adaptor which extends to provide a USB port, HDMI port and another USB-Type C port.

Asus Zenbook 3 Photos Display

The Asus Zenbook 3 comes with a 12.5 inch full HD display (1080 x 1920p). The display has deep blacks and the screen looks very bright and vivid. The best part about the display is its viewing angles, Asus claims it to have 178 degree of viewing angles and I don’t doubt it. One thing that disappoints me is the absence of touch input. At this price point, I expected a touch screen display to add up to the productivity and ease of use.

The bezels around the display are thinner compared to the competitors, which gives an immersive viewing experience and a better aspect ratio. Looking at the display for long was not a pain even in low lights. Moreover, the display is protected by Gorilla Glass 4 panel, which is surely a plus.

Keyboard & Trackpad

The keyboard stretches over the horizontal surface on the bottom; almost till the edges. The keys are big enough for comfortable typing despite the 12.5 inch screen size, and the travel distance is decent enough. The keys are backlit and give decent feedback while typing. If you have been typing on a bigger keyboard, then you may need some time to get used to this size. In some cases, I did not realize that the key has been pressed and the input is done (more often with the spacebar). Other than this, you will find all the alternate controls on the keyboard and they are very easy to use.

The track-pad comes with a layer of glass, and it is one of the best I have ever used. It feels smooth and gives you a wide area to scroll around the screen. It is very accurate and responsive from the first touch. You will also find a square shaped fingerprint sensor on the top left of the track-pad, which is not as accurate as I expected it to be.

Asus Zenbook 3 Sound

Asus Zenbook 3 boasts of a pair of Harmon Kardon speakers. The sound quality is pretty impressive looking at the size. There are 4 speakers in total, and they are very smartly placed. Two of them are above the keyboard and the other two are at the bottom edges of the chasis, which drives the sound perfectly in a closed surrounding.

Overall, the sound performance is good for listening to music, watching movies, YouTube videos or video conferencing. Obviously, you cannot expect a headphone like experience from this, but it still manages to impress.

Asus Zenbook 3 Performance

When it comes to hardware, Asus Zenbook 3 is a powerhouse with top-end specs. It runs on the 7th Gen Intel Core i7-7500U Kaby Lake processor clocked at 2.7GH and it is paired with a whopping 16GB of RAM. You also get a 512 GB of SSD storage along with Windows 10 Pro pre loaded.

As we said that is has a metal uni-body structure, we expect it to heat up. But surprisingly, it did not. It comes with a 3mm thermal fan and heat pipes under the panel which keeps it cool even with heavy use and charging. The impressive part is that the whole cooling is done so quietly that you won’t realize that the fan is working. It does get warm at time, but it never gets unbearable.

Coming to the graphic performance, it comes with an Intel HD Graphics 620 display adaptor, which has 8GB of memory. 8GB of graphical memory with such GPU is considered to be more than enough for most of the graphic intensive tasks. I tried playing a couple of games on the Zenbook 3 and to my surprise; it was easily handling most of them. But obviously you cannot expect it to be an ideal machine for hardcore gaming at this form factor. But if you are one of those who perform demanding computing tasks like editing photos, videos while commuting then you can surely consider this machine.

Battery Verdict

At Rs. 1, 47,990, the Zenbook 3 hits some blocks but misses some. Sure, it is a perfect competitor for the existing Apple Macbooks with such powerful hardware and elegant design but is it enough? There are other alternatives around the same price which offer tablet-laptop hybrid form factor for better productivity. There are devices with better modernity and usability but they may lack in the hardware prowess.

In the end, if you are someone who prefers beauty and power over anything else, then you can surely go for this one. But if you are spending this much of money on a notebook, then you can go for a Macbook unless you are looking for a Windows 10 Pro experience.
