Using Photoshop’s Contact Sheet tool, you can make a photo mosaic with your choice of images. The various blending modes help you seamlessly add the mosaic to your primary photo to create a unique result. The entire process is honestly a lot easier than you might expect, so let’s get into the steps to see how it’s done!How To Create A Mosaic In Photoshop Step 1: Choose And Load The Primary Photo
First, pick out the image you’d like to use as the primary shot. Mosaics work best on simple, well-lit photographs that are clear and bright! As such, I picked out this simple portrait of a woman.
With your image of choice, open it in Photoshop.Step 2: Organize The Mosaic Photos
Next, you need to pick out the photographs that will fill the mosaic itself. Gather a good collection of them and place the photographs into their own folder. This will make the next step much easier!
The images I used are courtesy of the stock website Pexels. I chose 49 different floral images for my mosaic. Regarding how many images you should have, you’ll need the number to be divisible by itself (more on why later!). 49 images is 7 x 7. 100 images is 10 x 10, 25 images is 5 x 5, and so on.Step 3: Create A Contact Sheet
To make the mosaic, we must first make the image that the mosaic consists of. We use the Contact Sheet option in Photoshop for this. A Contact Sheet is an arrangement of a batch of photographs on one sheet or document.
As a result, the following window will appear:
Go to Choose underneath the Source Images tab and select the folder with your images.
Now I am going to go to the Document section of this pop-up menu and make a few more adjustments.
Make sure that the Units section shows Inches and that the Flatten All Layers is unchecked.
Set the Width to 12 and the Height to 8, as this is the aspect ratio (shape) all of the photographs in the mosaic will have. Because all the pictures in my folder are different aspect ratios, this will unify them all. Set the Resolution to 150 pixels/inch (the default is 300, but that’s too much for this purpose). The Mode should be RGB Color, and the Bit Depth should be set to 8-Bit.
In the Thumbnails section, for Placement, I will select Across First. For Columns and Rows, you need these two numbers to be the same – that is why I told you to pick a number of images divisible by themselves. I did 49, meaning my Columns and Rows will be 7.
Ensure Auto-Spacing is turned off (unchecked) and your Vertical and Horizontal are set to 0 inches. This ensures there is no space between each image.
I checked the Rotate for Best Fit box to crop the images into the correct aspect ratio I set in the Document section. If you don’t want to have your images rotated, just don’t check this box.
In the Use Filename as Caption section, leave this unchecked. You shouldn’t have text in the Contact Sheet.
The result looks like this:Step 4: Fill (Some) Of The Photos
In our contact sheet arrangement, notice how some photographs don’t fill their area all the way. The reason I made sure not to select Flatten All Layers is so that I can go in and fix up these gaps!
In the Layers Panel, select each image (one at a time) that isn’t filling the space entirely and use the Transform Tool (Control + T for Windows or Command + T for Mac) to fill the space.
Your final result should show no white gaps like this:Step 5: Turn The Mosaic Into A Pattern
To utilize our mosaic, you must save it as a Pattern.Step 6: Add The Pattern To The Main Image
The Pattern Fill window will appear.
My pattern didn’t automatically appear for me, but for some, it will! If yours doesn’t appear immediately, you can find it easily.
Press the drop-down arrow where you see the trees on my window screen. From this arrow, you can find your pattern.
I left the rest of the settings at their default, leaving me with this:Step 7: Change The Blend Mode
In the Layers Panel, you’ll see that the mosaic is isolated on its own layer. Select the mosaic layer.
To change the Blend mode, press the drop-down menu that says Normal (because right now, the blend mode is Normal). In this drop-down menu, choose Overlay.
The resulting image will look like this:(Optional) Step 8: Adjust The Base Image
Notice how there is too much contrast in the eyes and hair in the photograph. I can fix that to make the mosaic blend better. All I have to do is edit the base image.
I will select the base image in my Layers Panel and duplicate it (never work off of the original! Always make a new layer. This saves you if you make a mistake down the line). You can also convert the layer to a smart object if you want.
The amount you need to change these values depends on your base image, so move the sliders until your photo looks correct.
Use any of the tools available in the Adjustments menu to edit your image to your liking. You can also play with the opacity of the mosaic layer itself to see what works best.
After tweaking my image, my mosaic looks like this:Step 9: Flatten The Image And Save
When you are completely done with your adjustments, you can flatten the image and save it in any format you’d like. If you ever want to go back to this image and tweak it again, you can save a copy of the file as a PSD, preserving all of the Photoshop layers.
As you can see, Photoshop quickly makes the mosaic pattern for you – making duplicating this cool effect relatively simple as well. In the end, this is my result!

In the Layers Panel, you’ll see the image as a Background Layer.Step 2: Convert The Layer To A Smart Object
Next, you’ll want to convert the image layer to a smart object. This ensures you’ll work non-destructively, so any edits you make can easily be changed or undone.
You’ll see the layer change to Layer 0 in the Layers Panel. This means the image is now a Smart Object, so all edits you make from here can be altered and won’t be written into the picture permanently.Step 3: Apply The Dry Brush Filter
You’ll see a window come up with the filter gallery open. You’ll see a series of folders to the right with different filters.Step 4: Adjust The Filter Settings
Once you’ve applied the brush, you’ll see a few settings appear in the window; these control the brush size, brush detail, and texture.
As you can see in the example below, we don’t quite have a complete watercolor picture yet, but the image is starting to look like it was made with dry brush strokes.
In the Layers Panel, you’ll see the image now has Smart Filters beneath it, with the first filter you’ve applied noted as Filter Gallery.Step 5: Apply The Cutout Filter
Now, in the Artistic section, select the Cutout option.
Each image will benefit best from slightly different settings. In general, you want to keep the Levels high, the Edge Simplicity low, and the Edge Fidelity low to maintain the most detail in the image. If you already have a lot of detail in your image, you can increase the Levels and Edge Simplicity slightly.
The Cutout filter may make the image appear more abstract, so we’ll go in and adjust the blending mode next so that the filter is only applied lightly.Step 6: Set The Blending Mode Step 7: Add A Smart Blur Filter
You’ll see the Smart Blur window appear with a few settings you can adjust for the smart blur filter. Set the Radius to 5, the Threshold to 100, and the Quality to High.
After a moment, the changes will appear on your document, slightly blurring the image so that it appears less like a photograph.Step 8: Set The Blending Mode Step 9: Apply The Find Edges Filter
You’ll see the image changes to a sketched appearance, with all the edges outlined.
In the dialogue box, set the Blending Mode to Multiply and keep the Opacity at 100.
This will bring out the photos’ edges while maintaining the painted appearance from the other filters. As you can see, the effect is starting to resemble a watercolor painting.Step 10: Find And Download A Paper Texture
Now that the image itself has been transformed into a watercolor painting, we can add a paper texture to the canvas behind the photo to make it look even more realistic. You can find a paper texture by searching paper texture or paper background on Pexels.Step 11: Add The Paper Texture To Your Image
It will open in a new tab in Photoshop, while your photo will remain in the first tab.
Now, head back to the first tab with the watercolor photo.
The texture will appear on top of the photo. In the Layers Panel, it will exist as a new layer. Use the shortcut Control + T (Win) or Command + T (Mac) to show the toggles which allow you to rotate and scale the paper.Step 12: Set The Blending Mode To Multiply
This will allow the image to come through the paper texture.Step 13: Find And Add A Watercolor Brush Set To Photoshop
Finally, we can add a few finishing touches using a watercolor brush pack. You can find these packs for free and paid online, though the easiest way to get new brushes is to use the Get More Brushes link from within Photoshop.
This will open the Adobe Photoshop Brushes page, where you can find more brushes to use in the program.
Select Import Brushes from the options.Step 14: Brush The Image Onto The Canvas
This will add a black layer mask with everything in Layer 0 hidden. In the document, you’ll only see your paper texture layer.
Set the brush size quite large, as we’ll use the brush to stamp the canvas and reveal the image. The effect works best if you set the brush size to fit about a quarter of your canvas. The brush tip is outlined in black below. Set the Foreground Color to white in the Toolbar.

Select the font you’d like to use from the options in the list.
Don’t worry about placing the text perfectly over the image; you can do this after you’ve applied the clipping mask in the next step.Step 4: Add A Clipping Mask
Now that the text is placed correctly over the image, you can apply a clipping mask between the image and the text.
Now, drag the text layer below the image layer.
You’ll only see the image – it will look like the text has disappeared.
The image will be “clipped” to fill the text layer.
In the Layers Panel, you’ll see a small arrow pointing from the Image Layer to the Text Layer, representing the clipping mask.Step 5: Change The Background
As of this point in your project, the background will be transparent. You can change this so that you have a colored background rather than a transparent one by adding a new fill layer and placing it behind the text and image layers. However, if you want a transparent background, stop here and export your project as a PNG.
Now, the text with the clipped image will appear in front of the fill layer, the solid color making up the background.
The color of the background will change to the new color you choose.Step 6: Add A Drop Shadow
Finally, you can add a drop shadow to the text as a finishing touch. Drop shadows sit just off the text itself and will help the text stand out against whatever background you choose. It also helps give an extra sense of realism and style to the project.
You’ll see various settings that will adjust the drop shadow in different ways. The main settings you’ll want to focus on are the Opacity, the Distance from the text, the Size, which will soften the shadow, the Angle, and the Spread.
Adjust these as you see fit. For my project, I’ll use a more subtle shadow sitting behind the text to help it stand out against the background.

Did you know that you can open up to 8000 layers in a single Photoshop file? I would only recommend doing this if your computer has enough RAM to handle it. Knowing this tells you how many images you can add to your project.
I’m only going to show you how to add three images to your project, but remember, it could be as many as you need (up to 8000).Step 2: Choose Your Images
Now pick the images that you wish to load into your project.
Files – Choose this option if you plan to select multiple images from the same folder.
Folder – Choose this option if you plan on importing an entire folder of images.
You will now see the images you chose appear in the Load Layers panel.
If you feel like you’ve made a mistake with one of your choices, or if you change your mind about one of your images, it’s not too late to delete the image from the list.
When it comes to the two options at the bottom of the window, make sure to leave those options unchecked.Step 3: Resize And Organize Your Images
Once you complete the last step, all the images you chose will end up in the Layers Panel. Each photo will be represented with its own layer.
All your images will be stacked on top of each other on the canvas. You must select each image and resize it manually to fit your project.How To Save Time When Loading Multiple Images Into Photoshop
Now that you know how to open multiple images into your project simultaneously, what if you need to add additional images to your design?
You can add new images by “placing” them into your project.
The only problem with placing images into your project is the extra time it takes to transform and confirm each image you place. Whether you are embedding one image at a time or dragging and dropping multiple images into your project, this step will save you time.
To help speed up your workflow, let me explain how you can change your preferences so you can just place your image and continue designing right away.
In the Preferences Window, you will find a list of tabs and many options you can check on and off.
Make sure to stay in the General tab. All of the options required for this setting will be here.
There are three settings that you need to make sure are checked on:
Skip Transform When Placing – This is the main setting you need to ensure is enabled. Having this setting checked on will make it so that each time you place an image, you no longer have to deal with transforming the image and confirming your transformation.
Resize Image During Place – Checking this option will ensure that your image will resize itself to fit inside your current canvas.
Always Create Smart Objects When Placing – This option depends on your personal workflow. A Smart Object will retain its resolution as you resize it. If you often convert your images into Smart Objects, you can check this option to save yourself a reasonable amount of time in the long run.
You will then be instructed to navigate your hard drive and find the image you want to add to your project.
Also, the image will not adjust the size of your canvas. Instead, your image will fit inside the space of your canvas.
Now that you set up your preferences, you won’t need to transform or resize an image every time you drag it into the program.
These settings also significantly speed up your workflow when dragging and dropping multiple images since Photoshop doesn’t need to open the transform function and resize elements when loading them into the program.
Now, this drag-and-drop method can also be useful for adding multiple images to existing projects. Just by highlighting your desired files on your computer, then dragging them into your Photoshop project, they will be imported and ready for action!
