Have you ever wondered what it’s like to become an Uber driver? It’s not a very magical transformation, but there’s a hiring process involved and they send out a pretty cool care package as well. Well, we were able to get a hold of an Uber driver starter kit and thought it would be neat to share the experience…

In case you’re not familiar with Uber, it’s a ride sharing or alternative taxi service available in many different locations around the world. With Uber, all you need to do is download the app and request a ride based on your location. I’ve used Uber countless times while traveling and the experience has been great.

Like I mentioned, we were able to get a hold of Uber’s driver kit and thought it would be interesting to take a look at. When you get hired as an Uber driver, there are a few tools you’ll need to make the job easier and thankfully, the company has got you covered.

First off, the packaging is surprisingly great. The presentation made it feel like I was unboxing a high-end product. Very Apple-esque. The first thing you’ll find is an “Uber Driver Guide” which will get you up to speed on using the “Driver” app and best practices when picking up customers.

Next up, you’ll get an iPhone. In this box, we were presented with a 16GB iPhone 4s, but it may differ for everyone. Uber also left a small welcome card next to the iPhone. In some areas, Uber includes a “driver light” that can be stuck to a car window, but due to laws and restrictions in certain areas, this package didn’t come with one.

Finally, you’ll find a small accessory kit. It’s nothing special, but inside of the kit you get an auxiliary cable, dual-USB car adapter, 6 ft. 30-pin to USB cable, and even a dash/windshield mount for the iPhone 4s.

Speaking of the iPhone, that thing is locked down. Uber is using special profiles to disable most of the iPhone’s features, but you are left with a handful of stock iOS apps. Unfortunately, you won’t find the App Store, iTunes, or Safari as they have been hidden and restricted. Also, even though the Phone and Messages apps are available, they aren’t functional. I’d assume that these restrictions are in place because Uber wants its drivers to do their job, instead of play around on the phone.

The only app you’ll actually need on this phone is called, “Uber Driver.” This is the app that you will use to conduct all driver business with Uber. Once signed in and “live,” you will be able to accept rides as they are requested from customers through the driver app.

Overall, there’s nothing magical or amazing here, but this isn’t something you see every day and we thought it would be interesting to share. I Rode An Electric Motorcycle For The First Time. Here’s What I Learned.

The Zero FX electric motorcycle is an exciting machine with a top speed of 85 miles per hour and enough acceleration to frighten yourself if you twist aggressively enough on the throttle.

But as a relative beginner to the motorcycle world, I didn’t ride it anywhere near its maximum speed when I had the chance to check it out for about a week in November. I’d never driven an electric motorcycle before, and a sense of curiosity coupled with pandemic-induced boredom urged me to try it out for rides in Manhattan (while another, very present feeling of caution urged me to do so carefully).

I’m not the only one hopping on a two-wheeler these days: Sales of new motorcycles and scooters are up by about 10 percent in the third quarter of this year, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. That bump is a smaller version of a large surge in bicycle sales.

If you’re curious about climbing onto one—whether as an alternative to public transportation during COVID, for fun, or some combination of those reasons and others—here’s what I learned as a beginner on a fancy new electric motorcycle.

The Zero FX

A standard-issue gas-powered motorcycle requires that its rider shift gears by pulling in the clutch with your left hand and changing gears with your left foot.

But an electric motorcycle strips away that requirement. Because you don’t need to shift, operating it is a cognitively easier task for a beginner like me. The Zero FX I rode, like other electric bikes, is operated simply by rolling on the throttle in your right hand. The rear and front brake controls are in their usual spots—engaged using your right foot, and right hand, respectively.

Because you don’t need to shift, accelerating is an easy, linear experience—twist that throttle and zoom forward. That allows you to zip away from any cars that you think might be encroaching into your space, but it also means that you can scare yourself if you twist it too much. Also, it’s very quiet—it makes a whirring sound when you drive it, and when you’re sitting still with it turned on, it’s completely silent. It’s wise to stay ready with the horn to warn others that you’re there. The common motorcyclist phrase “loud pipes save lives” doesn’t apply here.

The bike was taller than I initially felt comfortable with—the seat height is 34.7 inches—and when I was on it, I could only touch the ground with my toes; its height made swinging a leg over it harder than I expected, and backing it into a parking spot was also a little challenging. But I found that my initial intimidation with the machine faded as I rode it around my neighborhood, and the fact that it felt maneuverable and easy to swerve around with helped me become more comfortable on it.

If you’re thinking of buying an electric motorcycle, here’s what to keep in mind: You’re obviously going to need to charge it. If you have a garage or other easy way to park and plug it in, that’s a simple problem to solve. If you live in a city—and the Zero FX felt great for cruising around one—then you’re going to need to think carefully. I live in an apartment building and parked the bike on the street, so had no way to recharge, meaning that I had to rely on what was already in the battery for the time I borrowed it. While the model I was using has an integrated battery, the same bike comes with a modular configuration. That means you can remove the battery to bring it inside and then charge it—but it weighs 42 pounds. That’s rough if you live in a walk-up.

Bottom line if you’re thinking about an electric motorcycle: It’s a great option for a beginner, because you don’t need to worry about shifting, and it can be a great way to commute or run errands around the city or suburbs, too. The range on the model I had was 91 miles, making short trips easily accomplished for days on end between charges, but of course you’re not going to easily take it on a road trip. Plus, the starting price is steep: $11,295 for the non-modular version. And beyond the Zero offerings, another famous electric motorcycle comes from a classic brand: Harley Davidson’s LiveWire, which begins as $29,799.

Keep in mind, though, that starter internal-combustion motorcycles are so much cheaper—they might cost you somewhere around $4,000 (like for a Honda Monkey) or $4,600 (for a Honda Rebel) or more, depending on what you want.

Getting started

Of course, a dual-sport electric motorcycle is just one option out of a myriad of two-wheelers out there, and they come in different types: The basic categories include standard motorcycles, sport bikes, dirt bikes, and others.

“Unlike cars, motorcycles are very individualistic,” Yu says. Besides the issues of ergonomics, what you need it for, and the relatively new electric-vs-gasoline question, there’s also a question of style and even the culture of where you live. That individualistic nature is “kinda the joy of it,” she says. That differentiates buying a bike from purchasing a simple car like a Toyota Corolla or Subaru Forester—you’re thinking more about comfort, capability, and image than you do with a four-wheel vehicle.

Last but definitely not least, she recommends taking a safety class, which can pave the way for getting your license. A good place to look for those is through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or the website for your state DMV. I took a basic class twice, so had plenty of time to learn in the relative safety of a small parking lot in Queens, New York. Those experiences helped me feel comfortable with the basics of operating a standard motorcycle like a Suzuki, but also jumping onto that zippy Zero when I had the chance.

While everyone’s hopping aboard the social livestream train, certain platforms are friendlier for brands.

For your live video to succeed from both a social and an organic perspective, you need to choose the right social network.

For social media, this means the networks where you’ve got an engaged following and the know-how to create and strategically post high-quality livestream video.

For SEO, this means the qualified networks from that first statement that let you add links to the post and make it easy to annotate your videos.

I’ll save some of your work for you – the clear winners here are YouTube Live and Facebook Live.

Instagram Live disappears 24 hours later while Meerkat doesn’t offer a replay option, and Twitch isn’t really applicable unless you’re in the gaming industry.

But with Facebook Live, you can create a permanent post, download your video for embedding on your own website, add a description to your post, and review analytics during and after your stream.

YouTube Live offers the same features – and it’s owned by Google. Enough said.

Amplify Your Other Marketing Channels

Live streams in and of themselves are not a go-to SEO option.

The SEO comes when you use social live video to improve results from your other channels, from events to content marketing.

As they say, a rising tide lifts all ships.

The more social video you create, the more you have to embed on your related blog posts or landing pages.

Once the stream is over, you can update your video description with links to said blog posts or landing pages to drive traffic.

Event Marketing

Social live video gets more people talking about, hyped up for, and attending your event. In fact, this is one of the most common types of livestreams you’ll see.

Before social live video, only people at an event got to enjoy it, while others would read about it afterwards. With social live video, you can infinitely scale your audience and invite all your Facebook fans to enjoy it, too.

Promote, Promote, Promote

As with any campaign, promotion is essential to a successful live video.

Hype your livestream beforehand to drive eyeballs and increase your visibility on the platform when you do go live.

Create a Facebook event people can RSVP to.

Regularly tweet, post, or snap on your other networks to remind people it’s coming up.

Feature it in related blog posts or your email newsletter.

Ask your influencers to do the same, especially if they’re going to be featured in your video.

You can permanently post videos on YouTube and Facebook for long-term visibility, but you’ll get the most eyes for your video while it’s live, so you want to make the most of it.

Pre-schedule posts on Twitter and your other networks to drive eyeballs to the live stream platform while it’s happening. Use the same hashtag in all your posts.

Really drive the point home by keeping the related URL visible throughout the video. Write the link in big letters on a whiteboard behind you. Print out a big poster. Design special shirts for the occasion. You get the idea. You want to keep the link visible on the screen throughout the video so people still know where to go if they’re playing it on mute.

Keep the Ball Rolling Once You Publish

Once you finish live streaming, publish the video to your page and follow all the steps in your typical SEO checklist for regular video. This includes:

Making sure your post is set “Public.”

Adding a keyword-optimized title and relevant tags.

Beefing up your post description with relevant web links above-the-fold, and a detailed summary of takeaways below the fold.

Exporting the video to repost it on your other video hosting sites and social media networks.

Uploading the video to relevant blog posts or landing pages on your site to increase dwell time. This gives people a website URL to link to instead of your Facebook profile.

Including a transcription file for the video on YouTube and your blog page.

Providing an embed code for the video that links back to your website.


There’s an inherent urgency built into live stream video that makes it irresistible to watch. Just imagine if you can put that momentum to work for your SEO.

Opinion: What I’d Like To See Apple Announce At The March 27 ‘Education’ Event

Apple set expectations for the March 27 event with the invite: ‘creative new ideas for teachers and students’. It’s going to be themed and directed at education markets, no question.

But that doesn’t mean the event will be irrelevant to an average consumer outside of a school. Whilst software announcements will almost certainly focus on things like Apple Classroom, any new hardware revisions affect normal customers just as much as schools. Here’s what I’d like to see happen.

I feel like Apple wants to say that the 12-inch MacBook is that device. If you look at the Apple Store website, it is the first Mac in the navigation. Compare this to the equivalent page for the iPad, where the iPad Pro is listed first.

It is a sliver of metal with incredible portability, a Retina display and the new keyboard design.  The latest 2023 revision finally gave it enough CPU power to not feel dog slow. The problem is it is priced like a higher-end machine.

It gets squeezed by the MacBook Air on price; as poor as the Air’s screen is, it is 30% cheaper and technically has a larger display. (Refurbished Airs regularly get discounted even more significantly.) Customer psychology is always driven by price. The Air is the only Mac laptop that doesn’t have a four digit price tag.

On the other end, the MacBook bumps up against the 13-inch MacBook Pro with 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports. For the same $1299 price, you can get a much more powerful  machine with modern I/O connectivity, albeit half as much storage.

What I want Apple to introduce is a machine that can be priced cheaply enough to cut out the need for an Air for a regular consumer. Honestly, I think they are already close with their current hardware. If they made a 128 GB SSD configuration of the 12-inch MacBook, they could push it lower without making any revolutionary hardware changes. I don’t think it’s a pie in the sky proposition to envision a 12-inch MacBook for $1099, $999 at a stretch.

The rumor is that Apple will make the MacBook Air more affordable. This is less ideal in my head, because the folly of psychology that people ‘buy what’s cheapest not what’s best for them’ (even if they have the budget) will still apply. If they are going to do it, make it noticeably different — like $799.

Tieing into another rumor we heard last week, Apple could be prepping a higher-end 13-inch MacBook (maybe with two ports?) that would slot in above the 12-inch but below the Pros. This product probably wouldn’t ship until June, and is unlikely to even be announced until WWDC, but the changes made next week could signal a gap in the lineup ready to be filled. For instance, the Air could shift down to $799, the 12-inch MacBook hits the magic $999 number, and then the 13-inch MacBook fills a $1199 price point in a few months time.

If it was me thinking just about my own needs, I’d love to cut out the Air altogether and simplify the range. However, I don’t think that’s practical for Apple’s margins or customer needs quite yet.

In terms of spec changes, I wouldn’t expect a huge leap. Unlike the Air, the 2023 iPad is a pretty respectable product overall. The A9 is still a very capable chip. It’s just cheaper. Given that the invite looks like a pen stroke, I am inclined to think that maybe the new school iPad will support Apple Pencil though.

I’m not familiar with the technical requirements here, but I don’t think the expensive part of making an iPad work with the Pencil is in the iPad; it’s in the accessory that you pay $99 for. So, bringing Pencil support to the cheapest iPad doesn’t seem impossible. It’s also a technology that is now several years old, starting with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in late 2024.

Of course, using Pencil with the 9.7-inch iPad wouldn’t be as nice a canvas as a True Tone ProMotion screen from the iPad Pro, but those are niceties and not requirements for a good baseline experience. After all, Apple happily debuted the 2024 iPad Pro with neither 120 FPS screen refresh nor True Tone.

I think an update to the Apple Pencil itself is possible but could come later in the year, to accompany with new iPad Pro hardware.

The other thing I’d like to see is an Apple designed keyboard accessory for the low-end model. Apple currently recommends this Logitech case for schools to use.  The reality is, though, it’s really ugly. Moreover, it relies on Bluetooth to communicate, so it needs to be charged separately.

An Apple solution would be prettier, have zero-effort pairing, and ideally eliminate the need for a separate battery to charge. This last wish would require a Smart Connector in the iPad itself. Again though, I don’t think that connector represents a price premium for the overall bill of materials.

Even if Apple didn’t want to brand it as their own, a Smart Connector and partnership with Logitech would allow them to make a second-generation case that is significantly improved.

Strategies For Amazon’s New Product Targeting On Seller Central

Earlier this month, Amazon Ads announced that Product targeting would be available on Sponsored Display for U.S. sellers.

Now available via Seller Central, the expanded capability means reaching shoppers who are browsing similar and/or complementary product types and categories.

Previously, Seller Central targeting was limited to just audience choice.

This change means the abilities to target specific product IDs and categories are now available.

A Welcome Addition Upgrade to Sponsored Display

Amazon released Sponsored Display last year, but sellers were underwhelmed with its debut.

“There was very little ability to control targeting and the bids were very expensive and didn’t convert well,” said Robyn Johnson, an Amazon expert and CEO of Marketplace Blueprint.

Outshining Competition with Superior Stats

For example, if you sell for less than a competitor, or you know you have a better star rating, your ad would appear beneath the “Buy” button of the product they’re considering.

This inserts you right into the buying path to give the customer an option to comparison shop you against the product they’re thinking of buying.

Brand Defense, Upselling & Cross-Selling

However, that strategy also needs to be considered as one competitors might do.

“You can highlight another variation of the product or other products you sell. You want to do this for two reasons: the first is the potential to increase your average order amount. The second reason is that it protects your digital real estate from other brands looking to siphon off traffic.”

The targeting ability also means you can cross-sell to your own product lines.

Instead of thinking simply in terms of like products, think about how you would cross-sell to other, related categories.

If you sell matching jewelry, pair a complementary bracelet with the necklace a user is looking at so they can add it to their cart easily.

Consider how you might cross-sell in emails, and apply it to the products you have on Amazon.

Likewise, you can target complementary product categories.

If you sell tennis racquets, you may want to target users browsing tennis skirts.

Are you one of the many Netflix subscribers hooked on the twisted psychological thriller You? The show has been a major hit for the streamer, since moving there from its original home at Lifetime. After three seasons, are you looking for more shows like You?

You follows (seemingly) charming bookstore manager Joe as he develops an interest in Beck, an aspiring writer he meets at work one day. What at first looks like a romantic meet-cute, typical of many rom-coms, quickly turns sinister. Joe begins stalking his new crush, escalating to violence to make sure they can be together. As he tries to get back on track in later seasons, Joe slips back into old patterns.

Shows like You



If what you like is getting into the mind of a dangerous madman, you can’t do much better than Hannibal. The show, adapted from Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter novels, traces the relationship between the cannibal psychiatrist and criminal profiler Will Graham. Creator and showrunner Bryan Fuller brilliantly makes us care about Hannibal and his relationships with the people who are trying to catch the Chesapeake Ripper. They simply don’t know their friend and colleague is actually the serial killer they’re after.

What’s more, baked into the relationship between Will and Hannibal is a simmering, subtextual romance. After all, the heart wants what the heart wants.

Bates Motel


Norman Bates is probably the quintessential creepy killer of women. Played by Anthony Perkins in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic, genre-defining Psycho, we didn’t get a lot of insight into how the killer’s mind worked. The A&E prequel/reboot series Bates Motel changes that.

Here, we see the iconic villain (with his equally iconic mother at his side) reframed as the protagonist of his own story. We see how an innocent boy slowly becomes a killer as his mental health deteriorates over several seasons, making it a show like You worth seeking out.

Tell Me Your Secrets


Amazon’s 2023 series Tell Me Your Secrets felt like it came out of nowhere and disappeared as quietly as it arrived. Hopefully it’ll get a second season, because the first was a knockout, with terrific performances by Hamish Linklater, Lily Rabe, Amy Brenneman, Enrique Murciano, and Elliot Fletcher.

The show follows deeply flawed characters, including a former serial predator looking for redemption, a woman with a dark past and ties to another predator, and a mother grieving the loss of her daughter. The three characters’ paths collide as they seek their own answers and quickly spin out of control.

Killing Eve


Similar to Hannibal, Killing Eve is a kind of twisted love story between a dangerous killer and the intelligence officer trying to catch her. The British spy thriller sees MI6 investigator Eve on the hunt for the international assassin Villanelle. As she gets closer to her target, both women develop an obsession with each other. The need to stop Villanelle makes way instead for a more personal relationship, all while Eve comes to realize she might not have been told everything about her mission.

Gossip Girl

The CW

The original Gossip Girl may seem like an odd fit among shows like You. Aside from sharing leading man Penn Badgley, the two shows don’t have much in common on the surface. But dig a little deeper, and it’s easy to look at You as a very self-aware deconstruction of Gossip Girl, or at least of Badgley’s character, Dan Humphrey.

Dan is, as we eventually learn, the titular Gossip Girl. That means that, like Joe, Dan narrates much of the show, and also similarly does so in a judgemental, voyeuristic way. Dan is the typical TV “nice guy” of yesteryear. He’s a self-righteous outsider who looks down on his peers, even when they include him and he gets the girl. You effectively tells us to watch out for his type, correcting for the tropes that confuse creepy obsession and romance.

Dirty John


The true-crime boom has led to lots of shows like You that unpack the motivations of scary people who hide in plain sight. One such example is Dirty John, based on the shocking true story and podcast of the same name.

A single mom thinks she’s found the perfect guy and a second chance at love online. But as she gets closer to her dream man, she and her kids slowly start to see a darker side of him. Is this all a case of mistaken identity, or has she uncovered a dark, violent, and manipulative double life? And are she and her kids in danger?

Behind Her Eyes


Behind Her Eyes follows Louise, a single mother who embarks on an affair with her married boss. Things get more complicated when she develops an unlikely friendship with his wife.

Major narrative twists keep this series interesting, as Louise learns more about the couple, with dark revelations putting her in danger, as she realizes no one is quite what they seem — and this love triangle threatening to turn deadly.

The Fall


Like many titles on this list, The Fall tells the story of two conflicting characters: a vicious serial killer and the investigator hired to track him down and catch him. The killer is a family man leading a double life. Like Joe in You, he’s hiding in plain sight and relying on preconceived notions about what kind of person commits such ugly crimes. But the woman hot on his trail has experience with this kind of case and won’t stop until she gets her man.

The Fall is a great choice if you’re looking for shows like You — or just looking for an excuse to watch the incomparable Gillian Anderson.

The Stranger


In this 2023 Netflix miniseries, a mysterious stranger approaches a happy family man with some dark revelations about his wife. After he tries to confront his wife about it though, she disappears. As the series progresses, the stranger approaches more people. She shares other secrets, revealing hidden lives, elaborate cover-ups, and duplicity, all with devastating consequences for those who hear them and those in their orbits.

Like You, The Stranger looks at the double lives people lead, presenting themselves one way while hiding sometimes shocking secrets even from the people they love.
