Suggested April 2024 Mac App Frozen? 9 Tips For How To Handle Freezing Mac Apps

Did one of your apps stop responding while you were working on a Mac? Perhaps you tried closing or quitting the app but to no avail? This can happen from time to time where an app freezes up or becomes unresponsive, and while it’s frustrating, there are multiple ways to fix frozen apps easily on the Mac.

MacOS works seamlessly without any hiccups for the most part, but sometimes apps may completely freeze and stop responding to user input or your actions. This can happen for any number of reasons where an app stops responding, whether the app is buggy, it’s overloaded, some component of the app isn’t functioning, the app is running on beta system software, or for no apparent reason at all. Regardless, there are some things that you can try to get the app to function properly again.

If you’re unable to get a frozen app working properly on your Mac, read on to learn some tips to troubleshoot and handle frozen apps on macOS machines.

Troubleshooting Frozen & Unresponsive Apps on Mac

Let’s take a look at the basic troubleshooting steps you can follow whenever one of the apps installed on your Mac becomes stuck, frozen, or unresponsive.

1. Force Quit the App

You may have tried closing the app window but that doesn’t really quit the app on your Mac, and the app itself may still be running, and of course if it’s frozen then attempting to do anything with the app may be unresponsive anyway. You can confirm this by looking for a tiny dot right below the app icon on your Mac’s Dock. Therefore, you’ll need to force quit the app and there’s more than one way to get this done. Note that by force quitting an app, any unsaved data in that app may be lost.

An easier way to access the same would be by using the keyboard shortcut Option + Command + Esc.

There are actually a number of different ways to force quit Mac apps, so if these approaches don’t work for you or you just want to learn more, check that out too.

2. Relaunch the App

Now that you’ve managed to force close the app, you can try relaunching the app and see if it’s working fine as it’s supposed to (usually it does).

The app should be running normally at this point, but if it doesn’t, there could be other issues, or perhaps the app itself needs to be updated..

3. Update the App

If you recently updated macOS to the latest version available, it’s possible that some apps haven’t been updated for that macOS version, or optimized to run properly on the new firmware or hardware (for example, an older app running on an Apple Silicon Mac). In such cases, you can check if there are any available updates for your apps.

Note if the app was downloaded directly from a third party developer website rather than the App Store, updating the Mac app may be different. This is common with some apps from Adobe, Google, Microsoft, and smaller developers and vendors too. Some apps have built-in update mechanisms, while others require you to visit their website to install the latest version (VirtualBox, for example).

4. Reboot Your Mac

If the app is still unresponsive, even after you have quit and relaunched it, don’t give up just yet. Another thing to try is simply restarting your Mac. You may find this step silly, but most minor software-related bugs and glitches can be resolved by rebooting your device. There’s more than one way to reboot your Mac, but perhaps the simplest is with the Apple menu option.

Or, you can hold the power button on your Mac to bring up the shutdown menu where you’ll find the option to restart your device as well.

5. Check for Mac System Software Updates

If none of the above troubleshooting steps worked in your favor, you can check if you have any available software updates for your Mac and install them.

6. Unenroll from Betas

If you’re on beta system software tracks for macOS, you might want to consider getting onto a stable public build instead. Beta system software is notoriously less stable than final versions, and it’s possible that is why the Mac app is freezing in the first place. You can unenroll your Mac from the beta and install the next final version whenever it’s available.

7. Contact the App Developer

Still couldn’t find a solution to the app freezing? You might need to get in touch with the app developer. If the app is unresponsive due to issues with a certain version of the app or incompatibility with a current macOS version, then perhaps the developer needs to push out an update before you can get it to work again.

8. Are you alone? Research the App Problem

Also, going through public forums for the app to see if others are facing similar issues can be a useful resource too, whether on Apple Support forums, or elsewhere.

9. Is it system related?

If you feel like the issue is with macOS and not the app itself, you can contact Apple Support or talk to a live agent at Apple for further assistance.

Most app problems are not related to the Mac system software itself however, though it’s always a possibility.

How To Install Numpy For Python 3 3 5 On Mac Osx 10 9

This article will show you how to install Numpy in Python on MacOS using 3 different methods as below.

Using Homebrew

Using Anaconda

Using pip

What is Numpy

NumPy is gaining popularity and being used in various commercial systems. As a result, it’s critical to understand what this library has to offer. NumPy is a powerful Python library due to its syntax, which is compact, powerful, and expressive all at the same time. It allows users to manage data in vectors, matrices, and higher-dimensional arrays, and it is also used in array computing in the industry.

Method 1: Using Homebrew Homebrew

Homebrew (brew) is a free and open-source package manager that allows users to install apps and software in macOS based on their preferences. It has been recommended because of its ease of use and effectiveness in saving time and effort. Its catchphrase is “the missing package manager for macOS”

This option is a little more complicated and may require more time invested upfront, but it can save you time and headaches in the long run because you have more control and freedom with how you want to set up Python and other command-line tools.

The first step is to install Homebrew. Currently, this is done with a single terminal command that will walk you through the installation process.

You will also need to install XCode (free from the App Store) and its associated command line tools. This is why this option takes so long.

After installing Homebrew, you’ll have access to a new command in the terminal called brew. This command will install Python 3, NumPy.

# Install Python 3, which Homebrew will manage. brew install python3

# Installing Numpy using the brew install command brew install numpy --with-python3

Checking whether the numpy is installed or not.

Then you’re all set! This option grants you access to powerful tools such as pip and brew. It means that in the future if you want to install a new Python package, you should be able to do so with pip install . Other command-line tools, such as git, can be installed using brew install git. In the end, it will make programming on Mac OS X much easier!

See the Homebrew and Python wiki page for more information.

Method 2: Using Anaconda Anaconda

languages that aims to simplify package management and deployment. Anaconda’s package management system, conda, manages package versions by analyzing the current environment before executing an installation to avoid disrupting other frameworks and packages.

Once installed, you should be able to run Numpy and Matplotlib-based Python code. You should be able to open a terminal and type pip install if you need a new Python package. Some command-line tools and libraries are configured to install with conda install, but conda does not have nearly as many packages as the brew. But that may not be a big deal depending on what you end up using in the future!

macOS graphic Installation

Download the graphical macOS installer for the Python version you want.

On the Introduction, Read Me, and License screens, follow the prompts.

If the message “You cannot install Anaconda in this location,” appears, reselect Install for me only.

After a successful installation, the following screen appears −

Command line installation

If you prefer to use a terminal window, use this method.

Download the command-line version of the macOS installer for your system in your browser.

(Recommended) Using SHA-256, check the installer’s data integrity. See Cryptographic hash validation for more information on hash verification.

Start a terminal and type the following −

vikram -a 256 /PATH/FILENAME # Replace /PATH/FILENAME with your installation's path and filename.

Python 3.7 or 2.7 installation −

Enter the following for Python 3.7 −

# Include the bash command regardless of whether or not you are using the Bash shell # Replace the .sh file name with the name of the file you downloaded

For Python 2.7, launch the chúng tôi or iTerm2 terminal application and type

# Include the bash command regardless of whether or not you are using the Bash shell # Replace the .sh file name with the name of the file you downloaded

Enter to read the license agreement. Then, to scroll, press and hold Enter.

To accept the license agreement, enter “yes”.

Anaconda recommends that you use the default installation location. For the Anaconda/Miniconda installation, do not use the /usr path.

The installer prompts you to choose whether to run conda init to initialize Anaconda Distribution. I recommend typing “yes.”If you enter “no,” conda will make no changes to your shell scripts. After the installation is complete, run source PATH-TO-CONDA/bin/activate followed by conda init to initialize conda.

Close and re-open your terminal window to make the installation take effect, or type source /.bashrc to refresh the terminal.

You can also choose whether your shell opens with the base environment activated or not.

# The base environment is activated by default conda config --set auto_activate_base True # The base environment is not activated by default conda config --set auto_activate_base False # The above commands only work if conda init has been run first # conda init is available in conda versions 4.6.12 and later

If you install multiple versions of Anaconda, the system defaults to the most recent version as long as the default install path is not changed.

Method 3: Using Pip

Pip comes with Python by default but is not installed; however, installing pip is very simple; see How do I install pip on macOS or OS X? Simply run sudo easy install pip to install pip (this assumes you already have Python installed on your system; if you don’t, install it before running this command). Then, using sudo pip install numpy, you can install numpy, which will install the package numpy. You can also use pip to search for packages by using pip search, which searches through a list of Python packages.

Step 1 − To open Spotlight search, press command(⌘) + Space Bar. Enter Terminal and hit enter.

Step 2 − Use the pip command below in the terminal to install the NumPy package.

pip install numpy

Numpy was Installed successfully.

3 Best Free Video Converter Apps For Mac Os X

Miro: The Easy Video Converter

Miro makes video conversion extremely simple, and for those who want ease of use it’s hard to beat. Miro accepts tons of popular video formats including FLV, AVI, MKV, MP4, WMV, XVID, and MOV, and it also supports batch processing of groups of video and movie files, even if they’re different formats. If you are just looking to make a movie compatible with the myriad of other devices out there, it’s a great simple choice.

Download Miro Converter from the developer

Using Miro for conversion is drag & drop simple:

Drag and drop videos into the Miro window

Miro takes the technical names and confusing aspects out of conversion as much as possible, instead referencing the intended viewing devices rather than movie format types and resolutions. You’ll find support for Apple TV, Universal, iPad, iPad 3 (HD), iPhone, iPhone 4 (HD), iPhone 5 (HD wide), iPod nano, iPod touch, Android devices from HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Sanyo, or any other device by video size, Kindle Fire, PSP Playstation Portable, MP4, Ogg Theora, and WebM HD & SD.

Handbrake: The Advanced Conversion Tool

Download Handbrake from the developer

Handbreak is a very powerful converter app, but at it’s most basic usage:

Bring any file into Handbrake, or select a video source (file, DVD, Bluray, etc)

Choose a “Device” as the output format from the left side list of: Universal, iPod, iPhone & iPod touch, iPad, Apple TV, Android, Android Tablet, OR pick “Normal” or “High Profile” for standard video conversions

Handbrake is really fast, but ultimately the speed of all of these converter utilities depends on the speed of your Mac, and the length of the video. If it seems like conversion is taking forever, consider quitting out of other apps (you can even use our nifty quit everything utility) to free up processing power and system resources to get the job done quicker.

QuickTime: Convert Video Without Downloading Anything

Did you know QuickTime, the video player bundled in OS X, can also function as an excellent easy to use video converter? We’ve shown you how to use it to turn videos into iPad compatible formats before, but it can do much more than that, and whether you’re trying to get a video ready for any iOS device or PC, it works just fine. Plus it’s already bundled with your Mac, so you don’t have to download anything else or fiddle with much to get it working.

Converting a video with QuickTime Player is as easy as re-saving a file:

Open the video to convert into QuickTime Player

Pull down the File menu and choose “Export” (or Save As)

It’s obviously convenient to have a conversion option sitting on all Macs, but QuickTime Player does have a few downsides. Mostly, it’s that QuickTime has limited codec support, and while you can choose different resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080p) and file formats (different iOS devices, Mac, or generic PC), don’t expect to open a WMV file or any obscure video formats with it. Also, there is no batch processing option like there is with Handbrake and Miro. But if you’re just looking to convert a .mov or .mkv, you’ll do just fine with it.
