Microsoft Office Vs.google Docs: A Web Apps Showdown

The future may be the cloud, but it also may be Microsoft that ushers us into that realm of possibility and imagination, . Today, Redmond unveiled as a part of Office 2010 a suite of Microsoft Office Web apps that will compete directly with Google Docs. While Microsoft isn’t letting anyone play around with the apps just yet, on paper, Microsoft’s Web apps look like they could blow Google’s online services out of the water — beta or no beta.

(See related: Visual Overview of Office 2010 Features)

Price

For personal users, Microsoft’s Web apps will cost the same as Google Docs: nothing. All you’ll need is a Window Live ID, and you’ll be able to use Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, and Word online for free.

Winner: Tie

Look and Feel

Google Docs has a very nice basic feel to it, in keeping with the simplicity and ease of use that Google brings to its products. Microsoft, however, has no qualms about complicating things, and this time that attitude may yield good results. Microsoft says its Web apps will have a similar look and feel as their desktop counterparts, including the Ribbon feature. Microsoft also promises the Web versions of your formatted documents will render properly in most browsers, including Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox. There’s no word on Microsoft’s plans for the Chrome or Opera browsers.

Winner: Microsoft. You may have to switch browsers if you’re a Chrome head or Opera freak, but that’s a small price to pay for the look and feel of Microsoft Office in your Web browser.

Collaboration

Winner: Google. Real-time collaboration right from the Web browser is a winning feature for ease of use and Google Docs will work from almost any computer with connectivity. Until Microsoft explains itself more clearly, we’ll assume co-authoring will be limited.

Presentations

Both Google and Microsoft give you the capability to instantly share your presentation online. Google lets you share through the browser and connect to anyone with a Google account. Microsoft, on the other hand, is keeping it in the family, since instant PowerPoint sharing will be dependent on the Microsoft Office add-on Communicator 2007 R2.

Winner: Google. Both presentation apps are almost equal in terms of functionality, and depend on desktop versions for deeper editing power. But Google’s capability to share with anyone in the world right through the Web browser gives it a slight lead over the extra features of Microsoft’s Web app.

Word Processing

Wi nner : Microsoft (for now). Auto-correct is a nice feature, but I will also give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt and assume its editing features are going to be deeper than Google’s since it can port more features online from Word. I may be proven wrong.

According to my calculations, Microsoft just barely comes out on top with a score of three to two and one tie. However, Microsoft is making some big promises with its Web apps, and since no one has seen them yet it’s hard to know for sure how well they’ll work. Google may also stage an even bigger challenge to Microsoft later this year since the company is promising that Google Docs will undergo “dramatic changes in the next 12 months.”

Microsoft’s Web apps will be available to technical preview users later this year, although with limited functionality. The rest of us will get our hands on Microsoft Office Web apps during the first half of 2010.

System Requirements For Office 365 And Office 2023

Office 365 always attempts to provide you with the latest versions of all the software it includes. That includes both web versions and standalone versions if you have that plan. Office 365 has different packages that come with and without the latest standalone versions. You may opt to run older standalone versions but they may create compatibility problems. The article focuses on Office 365 and Office 2023 system requirements.

Office 365 System Requirements

We were talking about compatibility issues. If your Office 365 subscription comes with an option to use your own installed software, you can use older versions of Microsoft Office. But there will be heavy fragmentation if others use older versions – resulting in misplaced data. The objective of Office 365 is to keep users on the same platform – the latest platform – so that incompatibility issues don’t happen. Hence it is better to upgrade your standalone applications such as Word, Excel and Internet Explorer etc to the latest versions. That way, your workflow would be smooth and chances of non-compatibility do not pose problems.

Here is what it takes to use different packs of Office 365 on your computers.

Home, Personal and Student plans

If you are using a PC, you will need a processor with at least 1GHz speed. For Mac, it should be a bit higher speed and should be Intel.

Office 365 Basic can run on 2GB RAM on PCs. For Mac, it should be 4GB.

HDD space for running Office 365 home should be 3GB while for Mac, it should be 6GB and the HDD format for the latter should be what is called Mac OS Extended format or HFC plus.

Display requirements for both PC and Mac are 1280 x 800 resolution.

Browsers used should be the latest versions; in case you do not have access to latest versions, the immediately preceding version would do.

You will also need .NET 4 or 4.5 CLR; Though you can also do with 3.5, it may restrict some features.

Business and government plans

For PC, you will need a 1GHz processor of any make; For Mac, Intel processor is recommended.

PC would require 2GB RAM while Mac will require 4GB

Hard disk space should be 3GB for PC while Mac would require 6GB; Again, the format of HDD in Mac should be Extended Mac OS or HFC Plus

Operating system should be the latest as far as possible

Display resolution required for proper functioning is 1280 x 800

Browser should be latest versions as far as possible; if the latest version is not available, immediately preceding versions can be used

Your Microsoft Office clients should be in compliance with Office 365: Office 2010 through Office 2024; the latest versions on all your computers accessing Office 365 makes sure no inconsistencies occur

Individual Office Suites’ System Requirements

This section talks about standalone installations of Office suites such as home, personal, governmental etc. Check out the minimum system requirements for each Office edition. Remember that these are minimum system requirements meaning they can run Office but cannot guarantee speed etc. I would recommend keeping resources a little higher than what Microsoft suggests.

Office 2023 Home and Student edition system requirements

1 GHz processor

2GB RAM

3 GB of available disk space; better to have some extra space for temp files

Screen resolution of a minimum 1280 x 800

Windows 7 SP1 or above operating system; Works best on a latest operating system according to Microsoft

The browsers used should be the latest versions of the versions immediately preceding the latest versions

At least .Net 3.5; preferred 4.5 LCR

A Microsoft account (that naturally has a OneDrive account attached to it).

Office 2023 Pro edition system requirements

The system requirements are the same as that of Home and Student. But because of the extra features, I recommend a little higher resources. You will get touch features with Office 2023 so to optimize your experience, you will need a touchscreen. While most of the functions can also be performed with a mouse and keyboard, having a touchscreen will further enhance your experience. For example, if you are inking something on Microsoft Edge, the latest browser app from Microsoft, you will need a stylus on a touchscreen. If you wish to share web pages with other users, you will have to install Windows 10 so that you can use the marking and sharing features of Microsoft Edge.

The above sums up the system requirements for Office 365 and Office 2023. The Android and iOS versions are pretty light, but still, you will have to have the latest versions and at least 2GB RAM devices to work on the apps properly.

7 Predictions For Open Source In 2011

Predictions for the upcoming year are always plentiful in December, and this year is no exception. On PCWorld, for example, we’ve seen security predictions, enterprise resoure software (ERP) predictions, and general IT forecasts for 2011.

What I haven’t seen so far, however, are predictions for Linux and other open-source software. Lest that category of technology go “unpredicted,” allow me to venture these thoughts.

1. Android, Android, Android

This feels like a no-brainer at this point, but Android is clearly going to continue on its upward path throughout 2011. Holding nearly a quarter of the smartphone market in October, it’s widely expected to become the number-one mobile operating platform in the world in the next few years; I predict that will happen sooner rather than later, possibly even by the end of next year.

iPhones, meanwhile, will increasingly be a niche choice among a relatively small set of Apple fanatics, much the way Macs are, while Windows Phone 7 will be declared a flop.

2. Again, on Tablets

Android is going to give Apple a serious run for its money in the tablet arena as well, mirroring to a slightly less dramatic extent its rapid ascendancy on smartphones. I’ve lost count of just how many Android tablets are expected in the coming months, but there’s no way the solitary iPad can continue to dominate in the face of such diverse choice.

3. Ubuntu and Linux

Ubuntu is going to continue the strides it made this year and finally give Linux some of the brand recognition it needs on the desktop and maybe some mobile devices as well, making it a serious contender in the mainstream, even among non-technical consumers.

In particular, the combination of the new Unity interface and the Wayland graphics system promise to make upcoming Ubuntu versions what may be considered the first true “Linux for the masses.” Canonical’s research and development in such areas as context-aware computing, meanwhile, could push it ahead even further, and its debut on the tablet will give it a whole new arena to compete in.

In short, I predict big things for Ubuntu next year, even as Linux continues strong on servers and as Windows continues to fade in a cloud of malware.

4. Dual-Booting

Along with these relatively new contenders in the operating system arena and the increasingly blurred lines that separate form factors, I think we’re going to see an increasing number of devices sold with two operating systems. More often than not, at least one of those will be based on Linux.

One of the first things people did to Google’s Chrome-based CR-48, for example, was to install Ubuntu on it, and we’ve already seen tablets from the likes of Acer and Augen offering the dual-boot option too.

Choice is always a good thing, and I believe manufacturers will increasingly recognize that in their operating system decisions.

5. More Open Drivers

This year saw the announcement of Broadcom’s new open source wireless driver, and it also saw the debut of an open source driver for AMD’s Ontario Fusion chip. As Linux becomes increasingly mainstream, this is a trend that will continue. No manufacturer wants to exclude an increasingly significant market.

6. ARM

With mobile devices expected to outpace PCs in the next 18 months, the low-power, open source-friendly ARM architecture will continue to shine. Microsoft and Intel may both now be trying to catch up in this arena, but such efforts promise to be too little, too late.

I predict that ARM chips will become commonplace in PCs and even servers as well, particularly given the growing popularity of Ubuntu and other Linux distributions, which don’t require the expensive horsepower that Windows does.

7. Oracle and OpenOffice.org

Oracle had a very bad year in 2010 when it comes to open source, making it clear that it has no desire to play any role that doesn’t involve significant profit. In addition to suing Google over Java, the company has pulled the plug on OpenSolaris, caused the launch of numerous forks, precipitated the Apache Software Foundation’s resignation from the Java SE/EE Executive Committee, and targeted the Hudson project with more ownership claims.

OpenOffice.org, of course, is one of the projects that has now been forked, and I’m betting that the result–LibreOffice–is going to take over in the open source productivity software world. Many Linux distributions have already pledged to include it instead of OpenOffice, and the Document Foundation has exciting plans.

Oracle, meanwhile, will stick to lawsuits and price increases.

Will my predictions hold true? Time will tell. Meanwhile, what do you expect to see happen in the world of open source next year?

Five Issues Microsoft Must Fix In Office Web Apps

I’m all in with Microsoft. I’ve got Windows 8 running on my primary work machine, I subscribe to Office 365 Home Premium , and I use almost every online consumer service that the company offers.

So when it comes time to create a document using Web apps, there is of course only one choice: Google Docs.

Despite Microsoft’s wide array of great software, Office Web Apps simply aren’t good enough to trust with critical documents. That may change in the next year.

(Office Web Apps is made up of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote, as part of Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud storage service for consumers. It’s also included with Office 365, the broader email and collaboration suite that has free and fee-based editions.)

Microsoft recently said it plans to roll out new features to Office Web Apps that would allow you to “create polished Office documents from start to finish, all from the Web.”

New features planned for Office include real-time document co-authoring, faster launch times for apps, improved file management, and Chrome for Android support.

It’s great to see Microsoft making Office for the Web into a more full-featured version, especially while we wait for rumored Office apps for Android and iOS. Before Microsoft straps on a bunch of new features to its online Office suite, however, the company needs to make some improvements to the current version first.

Here are a few suggestions, with an admitted bias towards Word.

Thanks for the flashback to Office 2003, Microsoft, but the Word Web app would be better with an auto-save feature instead of a document recovery feature that works only half the time.

Saving in the Word web app is dicey.

Google Docs has auto-save and is one of the best reasons to rely on the search giant’s service over Office Web apps. The Excel Office Web app already has auto-save. Even OneNote 2013 on the desktop has it, why isn’t this in the Word Web app?

Has this ever happened to you? You’re typing up a document in Word when suddenly you get a notification that the spell checker is down.

WHY?

Even worse, sometimes Word documents won’t save because there’s a problem connecting to Microsoft’s servers.

Google Docs in my experience rarely has connectivity issues, but when it does it’s not a huge deal. You know why? That’s right, auto-save.

Don’t be so stingy with new lines

When you get towards the end of a document in the Word Web app, Microsoft gets really stingy about creating new lines. That means after typing about 300 words, you’re stuck in the bottom area of your PC’s display as Word doles out a few new lines at a time.

After a few minutes of more or less staring down at your taskbar, you end up straining your neck. Yes, you can hit return a bunch of times to create new lines and then scroll back, but that’s a hack, not a solution.

Google Docs does not have this issue. After you get close to the bottom of your display, Google Docs adds a new page and automatically scrolls you up a bit, but not so much that you lose your place. If you want to get closer to the center of the doc, all you have to do is scroll the browser page a little more.

The Office Web apps let you maximize your workspace by collapsing the Office Ribbon into a simplified menu, just like on the desktop.

Unless you’re a longtime Office user, you’ll miss out on this benefit since the collapse button is a tiny little arrow in the far right-hand corner of the screen. This should be bigger and more prominent so it’s easier to find.

Admittedly, this is a small gripe, but it’s the little details that make the difference between a good application and a great one.

So what’s the problem? There’s no easy way to open a new SkyDrive tab when you’re inside a Web app. Sometimes you might have data in a different document you need to check out in another tab. Right now, if you want to go back to SkyDrive you have to open a new tab and navigate to the site.

For the most part Office on the Web works fairly well. I even created this article using the online suite without losing any of my work, a not-so-frequent occurrence.
