NVIDIA Arm acquisition faces another hurdle with FTC lawsuit
Most people probably don’t know it, and they certainly shouldn’t have to, but Arm’s processor technologies pretty much run the world today. It’s present not just in smartphones and tablets, including Apple’s iPhones, but also in supercomputers, cars, and quite a number of IoT products. It is because of that rather critical position that NVIDIA’s plan to buy Arm from SoftBank is meeting a lot of resistance, and the latest to fall into place could be the final nail in the acquisition’s coffin, unless the two companies can convince the FTC otherwise.
There are too many actors on stage for this NVIDIA-Arm deal, which isn’t surprising because there are too many stakeholders in Arm’s business. Even the UK has reservations because of how the acquisition could endanger the country’s position in the tech market, not to mention raising national security concerns as far as trade secrets go. Before being acquired by Japanese giant SoftBank, Arm or ARM Holdings was an independent UK-based company designing and licensing IP for the chips that power many of the world’s devices today.
NVIDIA is one of Arm’s customers, and its plans to buy the chip designer have naturally ruffled the feathers of its rivals as well as government regulators. The US Federal Trade Commission is actually a bit late to the party, but it might also have the biggest weight considering what’s at stake. Its lawsuit to block NVIDIA’s acquisition of Arm makes it clear that it doesn’t believe NVIDIA can play fair with its competitors once it holds all the cards.
The FTC notes that acquiring Arm puts NVIDIA in a very favorable position to drive or curb the growth of the already struggling semiconductor market. In particular, it would have access to sensitive information from Arm’s other licensees, many of whom include NVIDIA’s direct rivals. Such an arrangement could lead Arm’s licensees to distrust the property and might be forced to seek alternate technologies. While that could help diversify the processor market, it will naturally result in some delays and losses along the way.
NVIDIA and Arm have promised to remain neutral as far as Arm IP licenses and services go, but not everyone is buying it. Many of NVIDIA’s own partners have expressed concern about the ramifications of this acquisition across a wide range of industries. Although best known for its graphics cards, NVIDIA also has stakes in other markets, including data centers and automotive systems.
The acquisition has already been questioned and scrutinized in other regions, including the EU and the UK, but the FTC’s lawsuit could deal the final blow. If it fails to get approval in the US, NVIDIA might be forced to drop its plans altogether, especially if it can’t provide enough guarantees to regulators that it will be impartial in how it runs Arm’s business. Unfortunately, this could also have a negative impact on Arm and its technologies as SoftBank will be forced to find another buyer or, in its worst-case scenario, form an industry consortium willing to purchase the property.

What Nvidia Buying Arm Means For Your Next Smartphone
NVIDIA buys Arm: The ins and outsPending regulatory approval, NVIDIA is purchasing Arm from SoftBank for a total sum of $40 billion. This will be paid in the form of $12 billion in cash and $21.5 billion in stock. Regulatory approval could take around 18 months. During that time Arm and NVIDIA continue to operate as separate entries and will be sticking to their current public roadmaps. If the deal goes through, Arm will become a business unit of NVIDIA.
NVIDIA — currently a customer of Arm — notes that Arm will retain its operational independence. In the sense that it will continue to operate as a subsidiary company rather than being incorporated into NVIDIA at large. In other words, the deal won’t chop Arm up for intellectual property or staff. This is important, as Arm’s core IP licensing business will remain as is. Various partners currently licensing Arm technology, such as mobile giants Apple and Qualcomm, can continue to do so. However, we don’t yet know if NVIDIA will end up utilizing Arm technology for future proprietary designs.
Don’t bet on seeing a smartphone with an NVIDIA GPU any time soon.
That said, Huang confirmed that Arm’s existing Mali graphics solutions aren’t going anywhere. Mali serves a wide range of use cases, from TVs to smartwatches, and NVIDIA won’t be forcing existing Arm customers to switch to a new IP. However, it does plan to introduce new options for customers who want access to NVIDIA’s rich ecosystem of accelerated computing, gaming, and other tools. Just don’t bet on seeing a smartphone with an NVIDIA GPU any time soon.
It’s also worth noting that Qualcomm has its in-house Adreno GPU team and Samsung has a deal with AMD for future chipsets. So there’s no obvious large-scale high-end partner for smartphone SoCs featuring NVIDIA graphics right now. We’ll just have to wait and see what NVIDIA brings to the table for sub-5W use cases in the coming years.
AI everywhere: A shared company vision
While NVIDIA wants to convince pundits, partners, and regulators that it will mostly be business as usual for Arm, the company isn’t just interested in banking some of the world’s most important intellectual property. Just like SoftBank, NVIDIA is so interested in Arm because of its current position and further potential for powering the vastly interconnected world of the internet-of-things.
Arm’s low power RISC processor design and developer ecosystem have made it a key processor player from power-hungry data servers to tiny battery-powered edge devices. NVIDIA wants to leverage Arm’s ecosystem to integrate its industry-leading AI processing capabilities into this range of product segments. Their combined IP, licensing experience, and investment potential positions Arm/NVIDIA as a one-stop-shop for the AI technologies of tomorrow.

Of course, this is a longer-term outlook that will play out over the next decade. In the meantime, NVIDIA will have to balance the expectations of Arm’s existing customers with its pursuit of cornering the future AI market. That may not be such an easy task if existing partners decide to reevaluate their options in light of this purchase. It’s now over to the regulators to decide if this match is in the tech industry’s broader interests.
Another Day, Another Couple Of Zoom Vulnerabilities Discovered …
It seems hardly a day can go by without more Zoom vulnerabilities being discovered – with not just one but two more being revealed today …
The Verge reports that a group of security professionals were able to use brute-force attacks to access sensitive details about almost 2,400 Zoom meetings in a single day.
An automated tool developed by security researchers is able to find around 100 Zoom meeting IDs in an hour and information for nearly 2,400 Zoom meetings in a single day of scans, according to a new report from security expert Brian Krebs.
Security professional Trent Lo and members of SecKC, a Kansas City-based security meetup group, made a program called zWarDial that can automatically guess Zoom meeting IDs, which are nine to 11 digits long, and glean information about those meetings, according to the report.
In addition to being able to find around 100 meetings per hour, one instance of zWarDial can successfully determine a legitimate meeting ID 14 percent of the time, Lo told Krebs on Security. And as part of the nearly 2,400 upcoming or recurring Zoom meetings zWarDial found in a single day of scanning, the program extracted a meeting’s Zoom link, date and time, meeting organizer, and meeting topic, according to data Lo shared with Krebs on Security.
The number was so high it led Zoom to wonder whether its action in requiring passwords by default is not working.
“Passwords for new meetings have been enabled by default since late last year, unless account owners or admins opted out. We are looking into unique edge cases to determine whether, under certain circumstances, users unaffiliated with an account owner or administrator may not have had passwords switched on by default at the time that change was made.”
Additionally, The Intercept reports that Zoom’s encryption appears to have serious flaws.
Meetings on Zoom, the increasingly popular video conferencing service, are encrypted using an algorithm with serious, well-known weaknesses, and sometimes using keys issued by servers in China, even when meeting participants are all in North America, according to researchers at the University of Toronto […]
They conclude […] that Zoom’s service is “not suited for secrets” and that it may be legally obligated to disclose encryption keys to Chinese authorities and “responsive to pressure” from them.
The university also discovered that the form of encryption used is weaker than Zoom claims, and is a particularly poor implementation of the weaker standard.
The company claims that Zoom meetings are protected using 256-bit AES keys, but the Citizen Lab researchers confirmed the keys in use are actually only 128-bit. Such keys are still considered secure today, but over the last decade many companies have been moving to 256-bit keys instead.
Furthermore, Zoom encrypts and decrypts with AES using an algorithm called Electronic Codebook (ECB) mode, “which is well-understood to be a bad idea, because this mode of encryption preserves patterns in the input,” according to the Citizen Lab researchers. In fact, ECB is considered the worst of AES’s available modes.
The company is responding, but if you’re not already using one of the many alternatives out there, the latest Zoom vulnerabilities may persuade you to do so. Among my tech friends, Whereby seems to be a popular choice.

Broken Arm Causes Symptoms Diagnosis And Treatment
One or more of the three bones in your arm—the ulna, radius, and humerus—are involved in a fractured arm. The act of falling into an outstretched hand is one of the most frequent causes of broken arms. If you believe you or your kid has broken an arm, get help right away. To ensure good healing, a fracture must be treated as soon as feasible.
The place and extent of the damage determine the course of treatment. A sling, ice, and rest may be used to cure a minor break. Yet the bone could need to be realigned (reduced) at the emergency department.
If the break is more severe, surgery may be necessary to realign the shattered bone and implant wires, plates, nails, or screws to hold the bone in place while it heals.
Broken Arm: CausesThe probable causes of a broken arm may include −
Falls. The most typical way that an arm is broken is when someone falls onto an extended hand or elbow.
A sports injury. All sorts of arm fractures are brought on by direct strikes and accidents on the field or court.
Important injury. After a vehicle collision, bike accident, or other direct trauma, any of your arm bones might fracture.
Mistreatment of kids. Child abuse may result in broken arms in youngsters.
Broken Arm: SymptomsThe first clue that you’ve broken an arm can be a snap or cracking sound. Some warning signs and symptoms are −
Severe discomfort that may get worse as you move
Swelling
Bruising
An abnormality, such as a bent arm or wrist
Being unable to switch your arm’s palm from up to down or vice versa
Whenever to Visit a Doctor?See a doctor straight away if your arm is so painful that you are unable to use it normally. The same holds for your kid. Poor healing can result from delays in the identification and treatment of a broken arm, particularly in children who recover more quickly than adults.
If treated promptly, the prognosis for the majority of arm fractures is excellent. Nonetheless, issues might arise like −
Uneven expansion. Because a child’s arm bones are still developing, a fracture in the growth plate, which is located towards each end of a long bone, might impede that bone’s development.
Osteoarthritis. Years later, arthritis may develop in a joint due to fractures that extend there.
Stiffness. When a fracture in the upper arm bone needs to be immobilized, the range of motion in the elbow or shoulder may become excruciatingly constrained.
Infected bones. A shattered bone fragment that pokes through the skin runs the risk of coming into contact with bacteria that can infect you. This sort of fracture must be treated right away.
Harm to a nerve or blood vessel. The jagged edges of the upper arm bone (humerus) can harm adjacent nerves and blood vessels if it breaks into two or more pieces. If you experience numbness or circulation issues, you should seek emergency medical assistance.
Syndrome of the compartment. The blood flow to a portion of the wounded arm may be cut off by excessive swelling, resulting in discomfort and numbness. In a medical emergency requiring surgery, compartment syndrome often develops 24 to 48 hours after the injury.
Broken Arm: Risk FactorsA fractured arm might occur more frequently due to certain medical problems or physical activities.
Specific sports − A broken arm is more likely to occur in any sport that includes physical contact or raises the possibility of falling, such as football, soccer, gymnastics, skiing, and skating.
Anomalies in the bones − You run a higher risk of breaking your arm if you have osteoporosis or bone cancer. An example of this kind of fracture is a pathological fracture.
Broken Arm: DiagnosisYour arm will be examined by the doctor to check for any open wounds, deformities, swelling, or soreness. Your doctor will probably ask about your symptoms and the way you hurt yourself before prescribing X-rays to find the exact spot and size of the break. Occasionally, a different scan, like an MRI, may be utilized to provide more precise pictures.
Broken Arm: TreatmentBroken arms can be treated by the use of medications and therapy.
MedicationsYour doctor could suggest using an over-the-counter pain medication to lessen discomfort and inflammation. You could require a prescription drug with a narcotic for a few days if your pain is severe.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) can reduce pain, but they may also slow bone healing, especially if taken for a prolonged period. To find out if you can use them to relieve pain, ask your doctor.
If you have an open fracture—a wound or break in the skin close to the wound site—you’ll probably be prescribed an antibiotic to stop an infection from spreading to the bone.
TherapyAfter a short time after the first therapy, rehabilitation begins. Most of the time, it’s crucial to start moving as soon as you can to reduce stiffness in your arm, hand, and shoulder while you’re wearing your cast or sling.
Some fractures need to be stabilized by surgery. Your doctor could postpone surgery until after the swelling has subsided if the fracture didn’t break the skin. Swelling will be reduced by elevating and immobilizing your arm.
Broken Arm: PreventionAlthough accidents cannot be avoided, following these recommendations might help prevent bone fractures.
Eat to build strong bones. Have a nutritious diet that is high in calcium-containing foods such as milk, yogurt, and cheese as well as vitamin D, which aids in calcium absorption. Fatty seafood like salmon, fortified foods like milk and orange juice, and sun exposure are all good sources of vitamin D.
Bone strength training. Exercises that strengthen bones and lower the risk of fracture include weight-bearing activities and those that enhance balance and posture. You are less likely to fall and break a bone as you become older the more active and fit you are.
Avoid falling. Use sensible shoes to avoid falling. Area rugs and other trip hazards should be taken out of the house. Make sure the area where you live is well-lit. If required, install grab bars in the bathroom and railings on the stairs.
Put on safety gear. For high-risk sports like inline skating, snowboarding, rugby, and football, use wrist protection.
Avoid smoking. Smoking lowers bone mass, which increases the chance of breaking an arm. It also prevents fractures from mending.
ConclusionPain and edema might result from a fractured arm. A person should seek medical care as soon as they suspect a fracture.
The degree of damage to a broken arm can be determined by X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. To maintain the arm in the proper posture during healing, a doctor may use a cast. The doctor could undertake surgery in the most serious situations. The recuperation period typically lasts three to six months, however, it might change depending on the location and severity of the injury.
How To Check If Polyline Object Intersects With Another Object Using Fabricjs?
We can create a Polyline object by creating an instance of fabric.Polyline. A polyline object can be characterised by a set of connected straight-line segments. Since it is one of the basic elements of FabricJS, we can also easily customize it by applying properties like angle, opacity, etc.
In order to check if a Polyline object intersects with another object, we use the intersectsWithObject method. This method checks whether the object that is passed to it, intersects with the polyline object.
Syntax intersectsWithObject(other: Object, absolute: Boolean, calculate: Boolean ): Boolean Parameters
other − This parameter accepts an Object which specifies the object we want to test.
absolute(optional) − This parameter accepts a String value which specifies whether to use coordinates without viewportTransform or not. This parameter is optional.
calculate(optional) − This parameter accepts a Boolean value which specifies whether to use coordinates of current position. This parameter is optional.
Example 1: Using intersectsWithObject methodLet’s see a code example to see the logged output when the intersectsWithObject method is used. The intersectsWithObject method returns true or false on checking if the polyline object intersects with another object.
Here, we have initialized two rectangle objects namely rectangleRed and rectangleBlue. Since our polyline object intersects with rectangleRed, a true value is returned.
var canvas = new fabric.Canvas(“canvas”); canvas.setWidth(document.body.scrollWidth); canvas.setHeight(250);
var polyline = new fabric.Polyline( [ { x: -20, y: -35 }, { x: 20, y: -35 }, { x: 40, y: 0 }, { x: 20, y: 35 }, { x: -20, y: 35 }, { x: -40, y: 0 }, ], { stroke: “red”, left: 100, top: 10, fill: “white”, strokeWidth: 2, strokeLineJoin: “bevil”, } );
var rectangleRed = new fabric.Rect({ width: 60, height: 20, top: 40, left: 80, fill: “red”, strokeWidth: 6, });
var rectangleBlue = new fabric.Rect({ width: 20, height: 40, top: 70, left: 200, fill: “blue”, });
canvas.add(polyline); canvas.add(rectangleRed); canvas.add(rectangleBlue);
console.log( “Does the polyline object intersect with rectangleRed?: “, polyline.intersectsWithObject(rectangleRed) ); console.log( “Does the polyline object intersect with rectangleBlue?: “, polyline.intersectsWithObject(rectangleBlue) );
Example 2: Using intersectsWithObject method with different objectsIn this example, we have used the intersectsWithObject method along with different objects to prove that this method can work with any object.
var canvas = new fabric.Canvas(“canvas”); canvas.setWidth(document.body.scrollWidth); canvas.setHeight(250);
var polyline = new fabric.Polyline( [ { x: -20, y: -35 }, { x: 20, y: -35 }, { x: 40, y: 0 }, { x: 20, y: 35 }, { x: -20, y: 35 }, { x: -40, y: 0 }, ], { stroke: “red”, left: 100, top: 10, fill: “white”, strokeWidth: 2, strokeLineJoin: “bevil”, } );
var triangle = new fabric.Triangle({ width: 90, height: 70, top: 40, left: 80, fill: “red”, strokeWidth: 6, });
var circle = new fabric.Circle({ radius: 40, top: 70, left: 200, fill: “blue”, });
canvas.add(polyline); canvas.add(triangle); canvas.add(circle);
console.log( “Does the polyline object intersect with triangle?: “, polyline.intersectsWithObject(triangle) ); console.log( “Does the polyline object intersect with circle?: “, polyline.intersectsWithObject(circle) );
How To Link Notes With One Another In Ios 17 And Macos Sonoma
Apple Notes is becoming powerful with every new iOS update, and this time, it got the most requested feature to add links to related notes. Now you can quickly jump from one note to another, even if they are in different folders of the Notes app. This guide will walk you through the steps to create links between notes in Apple Notes in iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma.
How to link notes in Notes app on iPhone or iPad
There are 2 simple methods to seamlessly link your Apple Notes on iPhone. Learn more about them below.
Open the Notes app → Go to an existing note or create a new note.
You can see the note title in yellow with an underline and notes icon at the front.
Please note that, while using this method, Apple Notes won’t let you change the text over the hyperlink. It will, by default, take the title of the linked note.
This method is helpful when you want to connect older notes with links. Also, I use it to link my team’s shared notes.
Open a note → Tap the place where you want to insert the link.
Press and hold the blinking cursor until a pop-up menu appears.
Now, to link your older notes, type the existing note title or the first word/sentence of the note.
Select the desired note from the suggestions.
There’s one issue I faced with both the above methods. For the hyperlink, when I used the same title as my shared note, it confused the people I shared it with.
Fortunately, Apple Notes allows you to add custom words as the label when adding links to another related note to note.
As mentioned above, tap and hold a space in notes → Choose Add Link.
Toggle off Use Note Title as Name.
Enter the hyperlink label you want to use in the Optional text box.
Further, you can insert hyperlinks, just like you do on websites.
Double-tap on any text in your notes.
Swipe right on the popover menu.
Tap Add Link.
If you used Method 1 to create the interlink, deleting the entire text is necessary to remove the link.
However, if you utilized Method 2 for linking notes, follow these steps to remove the link.
Double-tap the link to see a popover menu.
That’s it! Doing so will remove the text and leave the text as is.
How to link notes in Notes app on Mac
Adding links in Notes on Mac is way easier than on iPhone. I prefer it more because the notes will be synced across all my devices.
Open the Notes app.
Select the text in your notes or place your cursor where you want to insert the link.
Another thing I want to highlight. Don’t confuse this quick link feature with the anchor icon on the Mac Notes toolbar. Tapping the anchor icon will let you add a link to your Safari’s most recent tab on your notes.
Remove a linked note on Mac
Like adding links to related notes, removing a link on Mac is a cakewalk.
What are the benefits of linking notes in Apple Notes?
Apple has played its masterstroke by letting users create links between notes in Apple Notes in iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. So, now you don’t need to use those popular note-taking apps like Notion and do most of the work on the native Notes app. You must try the quick link feature for:
