Samsung couldn’t resist mocking the controversial notch and Face ID on Apple’s iPhone X during yesterday’s Galaxy S9 unveil. However, the firm is now on the defensive insisting its new AR Emoji feature is not an Animoji ripoff because it’s been in development for years.
Praising Samsung’s design heritage and Infinity Display, the company’s mobile chief D.J. Koh said during yesterday’s Galaxy S9 press announcement that their approach offers more screen in less space than Apple’s. The new Galaxies take the same general design as the Galaxy S8 series, with slightly slimmer bezels at the top and bottom.
“With Galaxy S9, we’ve built on this foundation, taking the same immersive end-to-end display and refining it even further,” he said. “We’ve created a design so sleek and unified, you can hardly tell where the screen ends. And as always, you know, there’s no notch.
A casual observer might note that there’s no notch because Samsung’s screen actually does not extend vertically all the way to the top and bottom edges of the device like with iPhone X.
He went on to highlight the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner as an example of listening carefully to user feedback. Fingerprint scanners are one of the most popular ways customers prefer to unlock their phones, he said, arguing that this is why they didn’t get rid of it.
“Instead, we listed carefully to your feedback and we moved the fingerprint scanner directly below the camera,” he said in another dig at iPhone X’s Face ID biometric system.
Beyond the notch and Face ID, Samsung and Apple appear to have a new smartphone battleground: emojis. Because Apple was the first to bring out Animoji on iPhone X last year, Samsung is now being accused of lifting this feature wholesale from its competitor.

Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Samsung’s mobile head D.J. Koh said that in terms who’s copying who Apple is doing its thing while Samsung is doing their own thing.

Koh said in an interview that he had personally explored early 3-D animations since 2001 on flip phones, while leading the firm’s mobile research-and-development team in the UK. He bristled at any notion Samsung was playing catch-up with Apple as the human emojis took years of development, he added.
‘Their approach and my approach is totally different,’ said Mr. Koh, cautious not to mention Apple, a rival and components customer, by name. ‘I do work seriously based off my own roadmap.’
Samsung is partially right that AR Emoji is not a straight clone of Animoji because with Animoji you get to become a puppy, chicken, rabbit, pig or some other pre-made animal character whereas AR Emojis are custom 3D avatars that don’t just borrow the user’s facial expressions but their actual facial features and overall look as well.

Samsung lets users create an emoji that looks, sounds and acts like them. AR Emoji uses a data-based machine learning algorithm, which analyzes a 2D image of the user and maps out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalization.
AR Emoji shares users’ real-life emotions not only in video but also with a range of stickers and uses a standard animated GIF file format so users can share their emojis across most third-party messaging platforms.
Translated: Samsung is arguing that its feature goes one step beyond by offering 3D personalized characters resembling Bitmoji or Nintendo Mii avatars. Which, of course, is something Apple could easily add to iPhone X with a software update.
The only actual difference between Animoji and AR Emoji is that the former uses pre-existing characters while the latter creates a new 3D character from scratch, based on real faces. “Innovation is not everything,” Koh added. The 56-year-old executive is expected to be promoted to chief executive of Samsung’s mobile and network division next month.
No matter how you look at it, 3D emoji have become a thing and are going mainstream.
Apple was first out of the gate bringing this feature to the masses and now Samsung is bringing Animoji to the Android camp, meaning that other manufacturers will surely going to follow suit sooner than later. As an example, Sony today unveiled the latest Xperia flagship devices that let users create a 3D image of themselves by snapping a selfie.

Battery life is perhaps one of the biggest factors when it comes to choosing the right iPhone for you. Typically, the Plus-sized models get improved battery life because of the larger surface area that makes packing a bigger battery possible, but it’s still good to know the details.
First, we’ll compare the smaller handsets to the iPhone X:
From here, we can see that the iPhone 8 lasts about as long as an iPhone 7 would, but an iPhone X can last up to 2 hours longer on a single charge than an iPhone 7 or 8 would. There are differences across the board, from talk time, to internet use, to audio/video playback.
On the other hand, only the iPhone 8 and iPhone X support fast-charge, allowing your battery to charge up to 50% from dead within half an hour. These are also the only two handsets that support wireless charging with a Qi-compatible wireless cradle.
Next up, we’ll compare the Plus-sized devices to the iPhone X:
In this data, we can see that the iPhone 8 Plus lasts about the same as the predecessor, but this is where the iPhone X starts to lag behind a little bit. It’s on par with the Plus-sized handsets concerning talk time and audio playback, but the Plus-sized handsets marginally beat the iPhone X on battery life in both the internet usage and video playback sectors.
Just like with the smaller 4.7-inch handsets, the 5.5-inch handsets follow the same fast-charge rules. Only the 8 Plus and the X support fast-charging capabilities, allowing you to juice-up quickly from 0-50% in 30 minutes. Once again, we’ll compare the smaller handsets to the iPhone X first:
What we see here is that there’s a marginal increase in depth, height, and width between the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7 that you probably won’t even notice on a day-to-day basis. In fact, you probably wouldn’t even see it if the devices were right beside one another. Regarding their weight, the iPhone 8 is about 7.2% heavier than the iPhone 7.
Most you are probably interested in the iPhone X, and it’s fairly larger than both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8. In fact, it’s 3.9% taller, 5.7% wider, and 7.1% thicker than the iPhone 7. Regarding weight, iPhone X is 26.1% heavier than the iPhone 7 and 17.6% heavier than the iPhone 8.
In conclusion, iPhone X is beefier than either the iPhone 7 or iPhone 8, so that might take some getting used to if you’re making the switch.
Next up, we’ll compare the Plus-sized devices to the iPhone X:
In this case, the Plus-sized devices are still the king of the roost. The iPhone X is both smaller and lighter than both Plus-sized models. The dimensions are nearly the same between the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone 7 Plus, but the iPhone 8 Plus weighs about 7.5% more than the iPhone 7 Plus does.
Comparing the Plus-sized handsets to the iPhone X, this is where the numbers start to get interesting. The iPhone X is much smaller than both Plus-sized handsets; it’s 9.3% shorter and 9.1% narrower, than the iPhone 7 Plus, but 3.4% thicker. Regarding weight, the iPhone X is 7.4% lighter than the iPhone 7 Plus and 13.9% lighter than the iPhone 8 Plus.
That said if you’re using a Plus-sized device right now and you’re considering the iPhone X, it will feel a lot like you’ve just bought an iPhone 8 or iPhone 7 until you glance at the mesmerizingly-large display, which dwarfs even the Plus-sized handsets.Conclusion
Keep in mind that the iPhone 7/7 Plus and iPhone 8/8 Plus are nearly the same size as one another, so cases for each handset should be backward-compatible. With that in mind, if you have an iPhone 7/7Plus and you’re upgrading to the iPhone 8/8 Plus, you shouldn’t really need to buy a new case.
If you’re getting the iPhone X, on the other hand, Apple has never made an iPhone quite like it before. You’ll almost certainly need to buy yourself a whole new case to fit the new handset, regardless of whether you owned a 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch handset previously.
In terms of battery life, the iPhone 8 Plus is probably the way to go, but most people will want the latest and greatest features of the iPhone X, so a slight trade-off in battery life probably won’t make or break the demand for it.

In 2023 the newest Wi-Fi will become available to the public. Known as Wi-Fi 6, it will bring speeds of up to 2Gbps to your wireless devices. But it’s not the fastest connection in the world of Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi Alliance has approved WiGig, and the technology can deliver speeds of 5 Gbps but is not widely used.
If WiGig is faster than Wi-Fi 6, why aren’t we jumping on the bandwagon and skipping Wi-Fi 6 altogether? Well, it is faster, but it has some limitations. Let’s take a look at what it is, and why it is not better than Wi-Fi 6.What is WiGig?
WiGig is another name for a Wi-Fi connection called 802.11ad. It’s also referred to as Wireless AD. It has the possibility of delivering Wi-Fi speeds that are an insane seven or eight times the rates offered by 802.11ac! With download speeds of up to 10 Gbps, WiGig can download an HD movie in a few seconds! It boasts super low latency and almost wired-grade responsiveness.
WiGig uses the 60 GHz spectrum instead of the 2.4 or 5GHz typically used by standard Wi-Fi. This spectrum’s wider channels can pack more data into the signal. It uses beamforming technology for a direct signal between devices, eliminating interference.
The antennas that WiGig uses to send signals between devices are only about the size of your thumb and getting smaller.What are the limitations of WiGig?
Getting this new technology’s speed is something that seems like a no-brainer, but those speeds come with limitations. WiGig has a shorter range than other Wi-Fi standards, realistically only up to about 30 feet. Because it works on the 60 GHz channel, it cannot penetrate walls, other objects, or even people, making it less efficient. So to use it, you’d have to be in the same room as the access point and keep anyone from walking between you and that signal. To use it effectively, you would need multiple access points, with each functioning independently to prevent network traffic.
Another problem is that today WiGig is technically faster than speeds available from almost all internet providers. This discrepancy means that you won’t be able to get its full speeds anyway.What are its uses?
So what is WiGig good for? Right now, WiGig would work best as a compliment to your current Wi-Fi rather than a replacement for it. Some of the uses for it that may be possible soon include:
A replacement for wired connections such as HDMI
Connecting virtual reality and augmented reality equipment when it is in the same room
Multimedia streaming, gaming, and networking applications
Allowing phones, tablets, and computers to wirelessly stream to a high-resolution TV or another monitor in the same roomHow is it different from Wi-Fi 6?
WiGig is much faster than Wi-Fi 6. However, Wi-Fi 6 is more flexible than WiGig because Wi-Fi 6 can travel through objects such as walls, and it travels further. Right now, most WiGig devices need to be self-contained. In other words, you need both the WiGig wireless adapter to communicate with a specific receiver through a direct stream.
Someday you may be able to buy a WiGig-enabled router and a laptop with the WiGig capability and get incredible speeds while the computer is within range of the router. These types of devices are few and far between today. Wi-Fi 6 will be widely available soon, and even though it doesn’t have the lightning speeds of WiGig, you will still see a marked improvement over your current connections.
We know that technology is continually improving, and just recently Qualcomm announced that they have the first 802.11ay Wi-Fi chipsets. These are the next level of WiGig and have the capability for speeds of up to 10 Gbps for all devices. WiGig technology could theoretically reach speeds of 40-50 Gbps, but today’s devices are not capable of handling such data transfer rates, so they have a lot of catching up to do!
So while WiGig speeds may seem like Wi-Fi heaven, it’s not really practical yet for everyday use. Wi-Fi 6, though, will significantly improve your experience over the current 802.11ac standard.

iPhone SE 2 wireless charging unlikely says contrary analyst
Apple may not have the resources to add wireless charging to the iPhone SE 2, with analysts casting doubts on reports of the smallest iPhone getting a big upgrade in 2023. Released in early 2023, the iPhone SE was Apple’s compromise for critics of big-screen smartphones. It proved to be surprisingly successful.
Packaging what was at the time the latest chipset of the iPhone 6S with a new camera into the iPhone 5s’ body, the iPhone SE managed to keep up with its larger brethren despite sticking with a 4-inch screen. Apple gave it a mild polish in 2023, increasing the storage sizes, but otherwise it has languished without a significant upgrade since launch.
Rumors over the past few months had suggested that the iPhone SE’s time, however, had come. Speculation began for a second-edition of the smartphone, unofficially dubbed the iPhone SE 2, which would again follow the strategy of distilling key features from Apple’s larger phones into a more hand- and pocket-friendly form-factor. Indeed, the rumors were beginning to seem pretty gratifying for iPhone SE fans.
Along with a processor upgrade and a better camera, it was suggested, the iPhone SE 2 would drop the metal back plate of the current design, in favor of glass. That wouldn’t be simply an aesthetic decision, mind. In doing so, it would allow Apple to add wireless charging support to the smartphone, just as it did in 2023 with the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus.
Not everybody, however, is so upbeat. Oft-cited analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, of KGI Securities, has dashed cold water on the Qi chatter. He counters earlier reports with the suggestion that Apple lacks sufficient development resources at present to focus on an iPhone SE 2 with wireless charging, MacRumors reports.
Now, the idea of Apple – with its billions in the bank and tens of thousands of staff – being short on manpower might seem strange, but 2023 is shaping up to be a pretty pivotal year for iPhone. After the iPhone X in 2023 debuted features like Face ID, the TrueDepth camera that powers it, and a whole new internal design, Apple is believed to be expanding that to its 2023 iPhone range. The first iPhone X was so complex that its market release was later than Apple intended, Kuo argues: an even more ambitious plan this year is only going to test the Cupertino firm’s abilities more.
The analyst’s vision of an iPhone SE 2 is a little less striking, as a result. If Apple does update the phone, he suggests, it’ll skip wireless charging and instead focus on a faster processor. That would allow it to keep up with new releases of iOS, like iOS 12 expected to be launched toward the end of the year, but also allow Apple to further shave away the price tag. That was reduced to $349 last year.
