iPhone SE 2 wireless charging unlikely says contrary analyst

Apple may not have the resources to add wireless charging to the iPhone SE 2, with analysts casting doubts on reports of the smallest iPhone getting a big upgrade in 2023. Released in early 2024, the iPhone SE was Apple’s compromise for critics of big-screen smartphones. It proved to be surprisingly successful.

Packaging what was at the time the latest chipset of the iPhone 6S with a new camera into the iPhone 5s’ body, the iPhone SE managed to keep up with its larger brethren despite sticking with a 4-inch screen. Apple gave it a mild polish in 2023, increasing the storage sizes, but otherwise it has languished without a significant upgrade since launch.

Rumors over the past few months had suggested that the iPhone SE’s time, however, had come. Speculation began for a second-edition of the smartphone, unofficially dubbed the iPhone SE 2, which would again follow the strategy of distilling key features from Apple’s larger phones into a more hand- and pocket-friendly form-factor. Indeed, the rumors were beginning to seem pretty gratifying for iPhone SE fans.

Along with a processor upgrade and a better camera, it was suggested, the iPhone SE 2 would drop the metal back plate of the current design, in favor of glass. That wouldn’t be simply an aesthetic decision, mind. In doing so, it would allow Apple to add wireless charging support to the smartphone, just as it did in 2023 with the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus.

Not everybody, however, is so upbeat. Oft-cited analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, of KGI Securities, has dashed cold water on the Qi chatter. He counters earlier reports with the suggestion that Apple lacks sufficient development resources at present to focus on an iPhone SE 2 with wireless charging, MacRumors reports.

Now, the idea of Apple – with its billions in the bank and tens of thousands of staff – being short on manpower might seem strange, but 2023 is shaping up to be a pretty pivotal year for iPhone. After the iPhone X in 2023 debuted features like Face ID, the TrueDepth camera that powers it, and a whole new internal design, Apple is believed to be expanding that to its 2023 iPhone range. The first iPhone X was so complex that its market release was later than Apple intended, Kuo argues: an even more ambitious plan this year is only going to test the Cupertino firm’s abilities more.

The analyst’s vision of an iPhone SE 2 is a little less striking, as a result. If Apple does update the phone, he suggests, it’ll skip wireless charging and instead focus on a faster processor. That would allow it to keep up with new releases of iOS, like iOS 12 expected to be launched toward the end of the year, but also allow Apple to further shave away the price tag. That was reduced to $349 last year.

Apple announced the latest iPhone SE will be $429, with a new A15 Bionic processor, same color options (don’t be fooled by fancy names), same screen, same Touch ID login, same size, same camera*.

The differences are: 5G connectivity, but only sub-6GHz, not mmWave, and battery life: now up to Apple’s impossible-to-quantify 15 hours of playback, up from 13 hours.

One of the worst things to stay the same is the 64GB storage default, too.

So, the guts of this iPhone are from the iPhone 8 in 2023. Yet, Apple is charging $30 more.

Why I can’t:

The problem here is Apple charging more for what’s basically a specs bump that it should’ve incorporated.

Ignoring the A15 chip, these specs are so average that it’s obvious Apple’s margin is enormous. It should’ve lowered the price, or maintained it. Raising the price for what is effectively a currently limited 5G experience just doesn’t do it for me.

The benefits of 5G will only be seen properly later. US carriers have spent $100B on 5G and yet it just hasn’t impacted consumers in a meaningful way.

And, 5G modems draw more power, so how this affects overall battery life will be interesting.

As for the chip, the A15 Bionic is great and all, and adds longevity to the platform, but the A13 Bionic in the previous iPhone SE was already easily sufficient for the hardware. It’s in the iPhone 11. The iPhone 11 is still excellent.

Anyway, I’m disappointed, for the first time in years, at this Apple iPhone.

I’ve been delighted each time Apple announces a new iPhone at the same price, or even cuts its prices, since they are the default for so many people, and serves to keep people in Apple’s very-very high margin ecosystem.

Grabbing the 128GB version, which is the only one you should recommend to anyone, means this is a $480 phone.

The best Android competitors here are the likes of the Pixel 5a ($450 but has been on sale) and the Samsung Galaxy A52 ($450). Both are much bigger and brighter devices, with better cameras and more photography versatility, faster charging, long-term Android support, IP rating, and solid battery life.

As expected, Apple didn’t pull the trigger yet on an M2 chip, but the M1 Ultra showing modularity by combining two chips looks extremely competitive for Apple in the long term.

The Mac Studio will be a default choice for plenty of folks looking at high-end solutions for design/photography/video work (Gizmodo).

And the same goes for the Studio Display, which is $1,600 but will tick a lot of boxes. Only the $400 height-adjustment element looks outrageous at the price, but that’s the Apple we all know!

Ming-Chi-Kuo is at it again with iPhone SE successor rumors this time around. MacRumors have a great knack for getting their hands on investors notes, with the latest one dropping some major iPhone SE3/pro bombs:

“We expect Apple to release a new iPhone SE in 2023 with a larger display than the 1H22 SE’s 4.7-inch and 4GB of memory support (vs. 3GB in the 1H22 SE). We predict that Luxshare-ICT will be the NPI supplier for the 2023 iPhone SE.“

The display is rumored to be Apple’s last iPhone shipped with an LCD display, however, it will feature a hole-punch front-facing camera instead of the cursed Apple notch. Overall, we’re looking at an iPhone XR-type design rather than anything resembling the current iPhone 13 line.

It’s hardly surprising that Apple is already preparing for an iPhone 14 release date, their yearly upgrade cycle is key to keeping the iPhone brand fresh in the public consciousness. It’s also key to keeping manufacturing costs down for Apple whilst providing better tech to willing fans.

In fact, we have a better idea than usual about how iPhone 14 and its various iterations will look thanks to a leak by Front Page Techs’ own Jon Prosser. Whilst he’s noted for leaking the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in July 2023, his leaks can sometimes be a bit iffy when it comes to specs. As usual, take any leaks with a pinch of salt until the real McCoy has been revealed. Although it hasn’t been announced, we normally expect iPhone 14 release dates around September time every year. Worst case scenario, you can expect iPhone 14 to be on store shelves before Black Friday 2023 for sure. In terms of pricing, there’s nothing confirmed although we can assume Apple will be following on from their budget to premium offerings as they did with iPhone 13 too. Anywhere between $699 and $1499 is as accurate as we can be right now.

It’s safe to say that iPhone 14 will offer various models in its line-up to suit different budgets and tasks. It’s looking like the iPhone 14 Mini might not happen in 2023, with Apple opting for an iPhone 14 Max model with a larger screen and diminished camera specs to keep costs down. The plus side of a bigger phone is a bigger battery capacity, which may make the new iPhone 14 MAx a big deal when it comes to budget-busting. We can also expect Pro and Pro Max models too, although we’re not sure how this will look when it comes down to official announcements and launch day.

It’s looking like Apple may be finally going all in for a selfie camera punch-hole instead of the fowl bar taking up precious screen space. With rumblings of Samsung going for an under-screen selfie camera with its next iteration of Galaxy handsets, Apple may go for similar technology to jump ahead of the curve. Under-screen fingerprint ID and Face ID are also rumored to make an appearance. iPhone 14 may feature a complete design overhaul, even though the last four generations of iPhones have more or less looked the same.

This technology takes the raw data captured by a 48MP camera to create a quality 12Mp image with more detail and less noise. Only time will tell, but the render leaks do feature an iPhone 13-esque camera array that is completely sunk into the handset.

A chart is a tool both investors and traders use to help them determine whether to buy or sell the stock-bond commodity or currency. Trends can be classified in three ways: Up, Down or Range bound. In an uptrend, a stock rallies often with intermediate periods of consolidation or movement against the trend. We want to know if the days when the stock rises outnumber those when it falls. If losing days are more and frequent then we can say the trend is weakening.
