Apple Watch is steadily evolving into a more capable sports watch, and the upcoming watchOS 5 software update continues that trend with yoga and hiking workouts, automatic workout detection, and new ways to see heart rate data. Specifically for runners is a new way to train with pace alerts and cadence — features coming to existing Apple Watches in a free software update expected in September.


Cadence is simply a measure of steps per minute that you take while running. Improving your cadence can directly affect the efficiency of your stride, translate to faster run times, and even minimize the chance of injury.

Cadence can be measured by counting the number of steps you take during a 60-second period — which is a handy distraction tool for enduring a difficult run — or you can let Apple Watch do it for you starting in watchOS 5.

Apple Watch can show you both average cadence and current cadence for both outdoor runs and indoor runs. You can see cadence during your workout by customizing which metrics are displayed. iOS 12 and watchOS 5 or higher are required.

From the iPhone, go to the Watch app → My Watch tab → Workout section → Workout View section → Outdoor Run or Indoor Run section → Tap Edit. You can have up to five metrics displayed per workout type so you may need to remove one or two metrics before including either cadence metric. Once included, cadence will be displayed as a numeral and SPM, or steps per minute, during your outdoor run or indoor run workout.

If you’re looking for ways to take your run to the next level, monitoring and improving cadence is one of the new ways coming to Apple Watch in watchOS 5.

Pace Alerts

Outdoor runners can also improve training with Apple Watch using newly added pace alerts in watchOS 5. This feature lets you set a target pace ahead of your run, then you can receive an alert when you go above or below your target pace. Runners can even choose between one of two ways of measuring pace: average mile or rolling mile, a new metric for Apple Watch that shows your pace for the exact mile up to your current point.

While cadence needs to be configured from the Watch app on iPhone first, pace alerts are set directly on the Apple Watch before an outdoor run.

Launch the Workout app on Apple Watch → scroll to the Outdoor Run tile → tap the … option button on the top right →  scroll down and tap Set Pace Alert → tap Set Alert → choose between Average or Rolling.

Your target pace can be anywhere between 5’00” and 12’00”, and your selection sticks once set. You can return here to switch between Average or Rolling before any workout, or you can turn off pace alerts from the same section.

From there the only thing left to do is go for an outdoor run — the longer the better — and start using pace alerts to help you speed up or slow down depending on your goal. My disdain for the treadmill and indoor running is strong, but I do appreciate being able to set my target on a single pace and stick to it. With pace alerts in watchOS 5, Apple Watch can help you train and match that experience.

iOS 12 for iPhone and watchOS 5 for Apple Watch are currently in beta and expected to be released to customers later next month. Cadence works with both indoor runs and outdoor runs; pace alerts work with outdoor runs.

Apple Announces Watchos 4 Apple Watch Update

Siri intelligence extends further into Apple Watch® with the new Siri watch face. How to use Apple Watch’s side button

The side button on an Apple Watch is a physical button situated on the device’s right side. You can use it to perform a variety of tasks, including contacting Siri, activating the Dock, and turning the device on or off. Below, I have described all the functions.

Note: You can’t change any of the following settings as they come by default.

1. Power on or off Apple Watch

To turn the watch on, you must hold down the side button for roughly 4-5 seconds until the Apple logo () appears. On the other hand, to turn off the device, follow the actions outlined in the following instructions.

Press and hold the Side button for 4-5 seconds.

Tap the Power icon on the top right of the screen.

2. Access Medical ID

The Apple Watch’s Digital Crown is a circular physical button that can be rotated and pressed to interact with the device. It enables you to navigate menus, zoom in and out while capturing images, alter the volume, capture screenshots, and much more. Scroll down to find out how it’s done. 

1. Wake Apple Watch

The primary and fundamental function of the Digital Crown on your Apple Watch is to wake your device. To do so, you must first enable the feature. To enable the Wake on Crown Rotation feature, follow the steps outlined below.

Launch Settings on your Apple Watch.

Head to Display and Brightness.

Toggle on Wake on Crown Up.

You may now wake up your wearable screen by rotating your circular dial upwards. You can also rotate it down to put it back to sleep if you haven’t completely awakened your screen to full brightness.

2. Activate Siri

Siri on Apple Watch is a helpful virtual assistant that can make many tasks easier to manage on your device. You can access Siri in different ways, including through voice commands. However, there may be times when the Siri voice command feature is not working as expected, or you can’t access Siri using voice command.

In those situations, you can use the Digital Crown to interact with Siri instead. To do this, you first need to make sure that the Siri feature is enabled on the Crown. Follow the steps below to activate this feature.

Launch the Settings app → head to Siri.

Now as you’ve enabled the feature, you can press and hold the Digital Crown to access Siri on your wearable.

3. Return to home

If you’re using an app on your Apple Watch and want to return to the main screen, just press the circular dial once, and it will take you back to the Home screen.

4. Roll back to watch face

While you’re on the Home screen of your Apple Watch, just push the Digital Crown once, and this action will immediately return you to your wearable watch face.

5. Head to previous app

With the Digital Crown, you can easily switch between Apple Watch apps. If you’re using two applications at the same time, just press the circular dial twice to navigate between them with ease.

6. List and grid views

You may move through the List view or Grid view on your Apple Watch by using the Digital Crown. In the list view, you can scroll up and down to navigate through the list by rotating the Crown. However, in the grid view, it’s a little more difficult since scrolling applications can open apps, but it’s a tricky choice.

7. Alter volume

While listening to music on your Apple Watch or when connected to Air Pods, HomePods, or Bluetooth speakers, you can use your Apple Watch as a remote, and you can effortlessly control the volume by revolving the circular dial.

8. Take ECG

Besides navigation, the Digital Crown can also take your ECG, but before you do so, make sure the function is enabled on your device. Ecg App For Apple Watch Series 4 Now Available With Watchos 5.1.2

Apple today released the watchOS 5.1.2 software for all Apple Watch models, sans Series 0. As we indicated earlier, the update has brought a new on-demand ECG feature to Series 4 models.

Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said in a prepared statement:

Apple Watch has helped so many people around the world and we are humbled that it has become such an important part of our customers’ lives. With the release of these new heart features, Apple Watch takes the next step in empowering people with more information about their health.

Aside from the ECG app, watchOS 5.1.2 brings other enhancements, such as an irregular heart rhythm notification and a new onscreen setup flow that includes details about:

As part of the new onboarding process, you’ll be given clear instructions as to what to do if you’re experiencing certain symptoms that might require immediate medical attention.

ECG app is here

The ECG app appears after updating the watchOS software on the device.

The ECG app is exclusive to Apple Watch Series 4, which sports a new electric heart rate sensor. The feature is pretty straightforward: you just touch your watch’s Digital Crown for about thirty seconds. Dong so closes an electric circuit between the electrodes built into the Digital Crown and the back crystal, letting the watch read your heart’s electrical signals.

After 30 seconds, your heart rhythm is classified as either AFib, sinus rhythm or inconclusive. The app generates a digital ECG waveform similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram and saves it securely in the Health app on your paired iPhone with iOS 12.1.1, which released yesterday, letting you share it easily with your doctor.

Tapping the option Export a PDF for Your Doctor in the Health app does just that.

The ECG app is a regulated feature that’s currently exclusive to the United States. According to Apple, its accuracy was confirmed by a clinical trial of 600 participants in the United States:

Rhythm classification from a gold standard 12-lead ECG by a cardiologist was compared to the rhythm classification of a simultaneously collected ECG from the ECG app. The study found the ECG app on Apple Watch demonstrated 98.3 percent sensitivity in classifying AFib and 99.6 percent specificity in classifying sinus rhythm in classifiable recordings. In the study, 87.8 percent of recordings could be classified by the ECG app.

Series 4 is the first device to get FDA’s clearance for over-the-counter ECG features. Apple’s been working with regulators on bringing the app to customers in Europe, Canada and elsewhere, although the approval process could take years in countries like the UK.

Non-US customers might be able to access the app by adjusting their regional settings.

Irregular heart rhythm notification

The ECG also tells you if your heart rhythm might show signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

AFib is the most common form of irregular rhythm. When left untreated, it’s one of the leading conditions that can result in stroke, the second most common cause of death around the world. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates AFib can affect up to two percent of the younger population and nine percent of those 65+ years in the US.

Other new features

Aside from the ECG app for Series 4 and the irregular heart rate notification, the watchOS 5.1.2 software includes other perks like a Control Center toggle for Walkie-Talkie availability and more than half a dozen Infograph complications for stock Apple apps.

The new Control Center toggle allows you to change your Walkie-Talkie availability without having to do it through the app itself. Just tap the Walkie Talkie toggle in your Control Center to change your status between Available (green) or Unavailable (grey). You can also adjust your availability by toggling a switch at the top of your friends list in the Walkie-Talkie app itself.

The new complications for the Infograph and Infograph Modular watch faces are now available for key Apple apps such as Home, Mail, Maps, Messages, News, Phone and Remote. Like before, you manage these in the companion Watch app on your iPhone (with iOS 12.1.1).

Those who use one of these apps on a regular basis should add its complication to their watch face so they could jump straight into the app by touching the complication.

How to install watchOS 5.1.2

To install the update over-the-air, fire up the companion Watch app on your paired iPhone, then hit the My Watch tab and navigate to the section General → Software Update.

If a new update is found, tap Download and Install and enter your passcode if requested. Tapping through the Terms and Conditions screen will start downloading the update to your watch. When finished, tap Install to being the installation process.

The Apple Watch is often described as Apple’s most personal device yet, and one of the reasons for that is that you’re able to change and rotate between bands, but also customize the Watch face.

However, Apple doesn’t make it obvious how one would go about changing the Watch face and has implemented several different ways to do so since the Apple Watch was first introduced. Follow along as we guide you through the various different methods of changing your Apple Watch face.

How to change and customize your Watch face on Apple Watch

On your iPhone:

Head into the Watch app on the iPhone. Up at the top you will see a list of your current Watch faces. To modify your current Watch faces, simply tap into one. From there, you’ll have options for color, details, and complications.

Complications are little app shortcuts, if you will, that give you extra information. For example, a weather app can tell you the current weather and update periodically, however, tapping on the complication will launch you right into the corresponding Apple Watch app. Depending on the Watch face, you can have small or large complications, with large complications taking the full width of the Watch face.

Colors typically match up with Apple’s sport band line of accessories. So, if you are wearing a sport band, there’s a high chance that you can match up its color with your Watch face.

To change color, detail, or complications, simply tap on the complication and scroll through the list available.

From your iPhone, you can also set the Watch face that your currently editing as your current Watch face as well. Some faces also have other options such as adding seconds to a digital face. You can also choose to delete your Watch face from this screen as well.

On your Apple Watch:

Force Touch by firmly pressing the screen while it’s on the main Watch face. Your Watch screen should pop out. From there, you can swipe between all of your current Watch faces, or tap the Customize button at the bottom to customize the associated Watch face. You can optionally swipe all the way over to the right, tap on the large + button labeled NEW to create a brand new Watch face. To remove a Watch face, simply swipe up on it and tap Remove.

You’ll now be able to customize color, details, and complications.
