It is becoming a truism that every business is a technology business. This is borne out every day in the fortunes made and lost on the business technology battlefield – Uber vs. yellow cabs, Netflix vs. Blockbuster, Amazon vs. almost every retailer, bitcoin and fintech vs. banks and insurance giants. To survive and thrive in the Internet age, you need to transform your business into a digital business.

In digital transformation, cloud computing is table stakes. It creates the foundation for innovation, experimentation, and iteration by delivering the agility, flexibility, and scalability that lets both IT and business try new things, quickly, easily, and cheaply. It is the core of success for ‘digital native’ companies like Google, Facebook, Yelp, and more. Digital transformation starts with cloud.

But the cloud is no longer enough. In fact, the cloud is already, inexorably, becoming the new legacy. After all, it is already more than 10 years old – older than Windows 7, the first iPhone, and the Nintendo Wii. All of which are now way past their use-by dates. Meanwhile a collection of new technologies, new processes, new architectures, and even new ways of working are emerging. I’ve noted numerous examples below.

·  Microservices – with many similarities to old-school Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), microservice architecture (MSA) breaks large monolithic applications into small, discrete, functions which are combined and shared among internal and even external applications. This allows faster development with more reuse and less rework, enabling rapid iteration and vast scalability.

·  Containers – containerization is the newest success to come out of the virtualization landscape, but with a smaller kernel and more shared components than virtual machines, containers enable faster deployment, forming the basis for rapid, iterative delivery of sharable and resilient microservices at scale.

·  Serverless computing – despite the name, serverless computing does not mean the end of servers per se, but rather is an emerging technology approach that provides on-demand access to reusable ‘black box’ functions as dynamic, reusable, scalable services – whether your own or from a third-party, such as a SaaS or ‘FaaS’ (Function as a Service) provider. 

·  APIs – while not new, API-based development has found a resurgence with cloud, MSAs, and serverless computing. APIs allow a ‘write once/use many’ approach to application code, enabling developers to build new capabilities by reusing existing functions or integrating third-party services to, in turn, drive faster application delivery and hyper focus on core competencies.

·  Composable applications – ‘composing’ applications from multiple pre-built components (including microservices, containers, serverless functions, and API connected services) allows developers (and even business teams) to build new capabilities and applications simply by reusing existing code, or by extending existing applications.

·  Automation Tooling – automation is not just about replacing people and lowering costs; it is also, if not primarily, about handling repetitive processes at massive scale and speed with fewer errors, tighter security, and better auditability. With humans only able to do so much, and work so fast, automation is increasingly the only way to handle the speed and complexity of new architectures like cloud, MSAs, containers, and serverless computing.

·  Data Analytics – the pace, scale, and complexity of new IT architectures create enormous volume of data from many different systems, applications, and users. By collecting, analyzing and visualizing this data organizations can better triage problems, secure systems, understand customers, and close feedback loops with real-time, data-driven decisions on everything from container status or application performance to customer experience and business impacts.

·  Agile Development and CI/CD – continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) are new ways of using agile development and automation tooling to enable dev teams to build new application capabilities in small, frequent, releases. This drives rapid iteration and innovation, with some CI/CD shops releasing literally thousands of new capabilities to customers an users every day.

If you are only adopting cloud, and failing to adopt a collection of these new approaches, then you are falling behind your digital competition: while you rewrite common application functions, they reuse existing ones; while you struggle to do it all yourself, they leverage vibrant third-party ecosystems; while you fight to retain talent, they have top-notch people knocking down their doors; while you take hours to triage and fix problems, they are back up and running in seconds; while you drown in technical debt, they focus on new innovation; while you take 6 months for a release, they take 6 minutes; while you guess and hope, they make fact-based decisions and know their impact.

Of course, cloud computing is also evolving, and cloud providers are keeping pace with, and even driving, many of these new innovations. For example:

·  Amazon Web Services (AWS): AWS Lambda, Amazon EC2 Container Service, Amazon API Gateway, AWS Cloudtrail, and Amazon CloudWatch

·  Google Cloud Platform: Kubernetes, Google App Engine, Google Container Engine, and Google Cloud Functions

·  Microsoft Azure: Azure Spark, Azure API Management, Azure Service Fabric, and Azure Application Gateway

These capabilities are keeping the cloud providers at the leading edge of these critical new technologies and processes; while deep partnerships and tight integrations with third-party providers helps them offer other critical services in areas like containers, automation, and analytics.

However, it is not enough to be using a cloud that provides these capabilities. You need to actively keep pace with them too. The new technologies, processes, and benefits of ‘New IT’ are not waiting for you, and nor are your digital competitors. If you are still relying on a vanilla cloud adoption to spur your digital transformation, it is time to step up to New IT architectures.

Here’s how to root your shiny new OnePlus 5

Rooting has become less of a necessity these days, but there will always be reasons for rooting and people who want it nonetheless. Fortunately, some OEMs, like Sony and OnePlus, make it easier to do so. Say what you want about OnePlus but it has not yet backed down on its modding-friendly stance. And now that the OnePlus 5 has had some time in the wild, it has come time to root the OnePlus 5. Fortunately for today’s generation, that has become a simpler; and less hair-raising task.

Naturally, the huge disclaimer comes first. While the process of rooting has indeed become easier and more standardized, things can still go wrong. And while you are less likely to irreparably brick your OnePlus 5 by doing so, you might end up wiping your data along the way. In fact, one step WILL wipe your data, regardless. So before undertaking this process, backing up your photos and files is really a must.

Setting up the tools for this process has also become more streamlined. On the PC or Mac side, you simply need to download the separate tools like ADB and Fastboot and make sure the USB driver for the OnePlus 5 is installed. On the smartphone side, you need to enable Developer Options, USB Debugging, and OEM Unlocking, in that order.

The first actual step to take, and one that will wipe your data is to unlock the phone’s bootloader. The simple command

fastboot oem unlock

takes care of that, while also wiping your phone. Your phone will reboot and you’ll have to go through enabling USB debugging and OEM Unlocking all over again.

The next step is to install a custom recovery, in this case, TWRP. This part involves downloading the TWRP image file (.img) to your computer. Reboot the phone into the bootloader again and then issue the command:

fastboot flash recovery twrp_image_filename.img

This time, reboot manually. If you change your mind about rooting, you can already stop here. Having a custom recovery already gives you many features, like better backups or even installing custom ROMs. Of course, we’re here for rooting, so carry on!

Installing it actually the second easiest part (unlocking being the easiest but also most destructive). Simply download the SuperSU or Magisk image and place it somewhere in your phone or on your desktop. If you choose the latter, however, you’ll still have to transfer the files to the phone, via ADB, USB, etc. Either way, do remember where you saved the files. Reboot into your custom recovery and then select the SuperSU/Magisk file to install it to root. Et voila! A rooted OnePlus 5.

Rooting is still the only way to go if you need nearly total control over your smartphones. Most users won’t need that much and there are many utilities that add new features without having to root. But if ever the time comes that you do need to root that OnePlus 5 of yours, take comfort in the fact that OnePlus easily lets yo do so and that it’s now a piece of cake as well.

Salesforce Is Building An Nft Cloud Service

Salesforce has told employees that it plans to build an NFT cloud service, according to reports from US news outlets. 

Salesforce is best known for its CRM software, but Co-CEO Marc Benioff – who also owns TIME magazine and its line of NFTs – is evidently keen to branch out further. 

With increasing numbers of companies hurling money at NFT-related projects, the question of how long the “bubble” will last is well and truly open. 

What is Salesforce Actually Building?

Salesforce is hoping to create a cloud-based platform where artists can create NFTs and subsequently sell them. 

Co-CEOs Marc Benioff and Bret Taylor mentioned the idea in a private meeting, the details of which were passed on to CNBC by individuals who attended. Executives reportedly held up Pepsi’s foray into the NFT world as an example of what was possible. 

NFT trading platforms like OpenSea are already up, running, and processing billions of dollars of transactions – and Salesforce wants their own slice of non-fungible pie.

Salesforce insiders said that a platform for buying and selling NFTs could be integrated into the company’s existing sales tech ecosystem, within which all transactions could be dealt with. 

Salesforce chief Marc Benioff has already shown a keen interest in NFTs through his ownership of TIME Magazine; the magazine generates TIMEpieces, digital collectibles that allow readers to unlock content and events. 

NFTs: The Bubble that Just Won’t Burst – Yet

In short, NFTs are crypto assets that live on the Ethereum blockchain. They are “non-fungible” because they contain a digital signature, which can be used to verify ownership. Conversely, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are “fungible”, because they can be exchanged for one another. 

Although NFTs have been around since the early 2010s, only in the last few years has it turned into a multi-billion dollar industry. 

OpenSea, an NFT trading platform, recently raised around $300 million at a $13.3 billion valuation. According to decentralized app store DappRadar, total sales on the platform surpassed $23 billion in 2023.

Exactly how economically dangerous NFTs are is hotly debated. To be charitable to critics, NFTs exude all the classic hallmarks of an asset bubble – which materializes the price of a certain item, product, or object soars without any underlying fundamentals that can be attributed to the rise, such as demand outstripping supply, or genuine usefulness. 

But then again, similar things were said about Bitcoin, and now look how far that’s come. What’s more, one could argue we’re simply seeing concepts such as “ownership” and “value” are simply being redefined in real-time, or updated to deal with the increased interest in digital property. 

Salesforce Jump on the Blockchain Bandwagon

The news all but confirms that Salesforce is about to add its name to the long list of companies that are venturing into the world of NFTs – whether it’ll be as successful as its CRM software remains to be seen.

Pepsi is one name Salesforce held up as an example in internal conversations but, in reality, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Nike and Adidas have both broken ground with NFTs of their own, with the former currently suing StockX for “freeriding” on its trademarks and using them to produce tokens. Hermes is another big brand to have taken recent legal action over NFT-related trademark infringements.

Coca-Cola, McDonalds and Ray-Ban are three other business behemoths that are starting to lean more heavily on NFTs for marketing purposes.

If CEO Marc Benioff’s TIME magazine NFTs are anything to go by, then Salesforce is heading into this increasingly competitive marketplace with serious intentions.

Why Is Cloud Data Security Still Lackluster?

The Ponemon Institute produced its third annual report on global trends in cloud encryption.  They worked with encryption solutions provider, Thales e-Security, so you do the math in terms of biases.  However, there are some interesting data points that relate to how enterprises manage cloud security. 

The report declares that about half the organizations out there are moving confidential data to the cloud.  Most importantly, they trust the cloud more than they did a year ago, as the number of cloud-based data systems increases and data breaches don’t seem to be an issue.

Ponemon asked 4,275 businesses and IT managers in multiple countries about the ways they use cloud services and encryption around managing sensitive data.  This includes whether or not companies encrypted data in the cloud at all.

When it came to encryption at rest for data, the numbers were lackluster. Only 39 percent of SaaS users and 26 percent of IaaS/PaaS users had data at rest encryption.  Moreover, only 44 percent (SaaS)/40 percent (IaaS/PaaS) of those users were encrypting data before sending it to the cloud. 

While this is good news in terms of enterprises trusting the cloud, it may be bad news in terms of risk and exposure.  While cloud computing can be made secure for enterprise data, you must at least take steps to make it secure.  Indeed, the level of security in the cloud is directly dependent upon the amount of security planning that goes into both the architecture and implementation. 

Hackers may not be the only group going after your data.  A U.S. magistrate judge ruled this month that U.S. cloud vendors must fork over customer data even if that data resides in data centers outside the country, if warrants are provided.  In his ruling, U.S. Magistrate Judge James Francis found that big ISPs, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google, must comply with valid warrants to turn over customer information, even if that material resides in data centers outside the U.S.

This means that, if it’s in a U.S.-based provider’s cloud, there is some risk that your data will fall into the hands of U.S. authorities.  In some cases, this could happen without your knowledge.  Few would argue with the contention that law enforcement may occasionally need to go after data that resides within cloud providers for legitimate reasons.  The problem is that there is likely to be some collateral damage when that happens. 

For example, the FBI seizes servers from a cloud provider used to support a criminal operation, and you data share the same cloud server that ends up on the truck heading to the FBI labs.  As a result, trade secrets are exposed, or perhaps other information that you would rather not have in the hands of someone who has not signed a confidentiality agreement. 

We don’t need to be overly paranoid about data security in the cloud.  However, the core problem, as revealed in the survey, is that companies don’t put enough security thinking, planning, and technology around data in the cloud.  While nothing is 100 percent secure, enterprises that don’t take steps to secure data in flight and at risk are likely to run into unexpected problems somewhere down the road. 

It’s pretty easy to create a sound data security plan for your cloud implementation that will meet the needs of your business.  I like to use the tee shirt sizing analogy, or, small, medium, and large. 

· Small: Basic encryption at rest for your cloud-based data.  While some are concerned about performance, the processing overhead is typically better than you think.  This provides some level of assurance that, even if your data is accessed, there will be minimal or no damage. 

· Medium: Basic encryption at rest, as well as basic encryption in flight.  When moving data to and from cloud-based platforms, it’s typically over the open Internet.  This level of security should keep most of the risks low for data breaches.

Data security is not new.  What’s new is the use of public clouds for enterprise data storage.  That said, the basic data security approaches and technologies we’ve leveraged for years are still very much relevant, and have been relocated to the cloud. 

I’ve been alive to see many paradigm shifts in the world of IT, but the movement to cloud computing is much more far-reaching and systemic.  We need to consider proven best practices, such as data security, and make sure we don’t forget those practices when moving to the cloud.  Until best practices are applied on a much broader scale, data security will still be an issue as we migrate our core data to cloud-based platforms.  The sad fact is, it does not have to be this way.
