Suggested December 2023 Washington Post Finds 5,400 App Trackers Sending Data From An Iphone
Monitoring software used by The Washington Post on an ordinary iPhone found that no fewer than 5,400 app trackers were sending data from the phone – in some cases including sensitive data like location and phone number.
It’s 3 a.m. Do you know what your iPhone is doing?
Mine has been alarmingly busy. Even though the screen is off and I’m snoring, apps are beaming out lots of information about me to companies I’ve never heard of. Your iPhone probably is doing the same — and Apple could be doing more to stop it.
On a recent Monday night, a dozen marketing companies, research firms and other personal data guzzlers got reports from my iPhone. At 11:43 p.m., a company called Amplitude learned my phone number, email and exact location. At 3:58 a.m., another called Appboy got a digital fingerprint of my phone. At 6:25 a.m., a tracker called Demdex received a way to identify my phone and sent back a list of other trackers to pair up with […]
In a single week, I encountered over 5,400 trackers, mostly in apps, not including the incessant Yelp traffic. According to privacy firm Disconnect, which helped test my iPhone, those unwanted trackers would have spewed out 1.5 gigabytes of data over the span of a month. That’s half of an entire basic wireless service plan from AT&T.
The report does need to be viewed in context, however.
App trackers in contextFirst, while there is much breathless reporting of data being sent to companies like Google and Facebook, the vast majority of it is innocuous. It’s simply developers using app analytics services provided by these companies, and they are learning things like which app features people do and don’t use.
Second, the Privacy Pro app that The Washington Post was using to monitor the tracker traffic was provided by a company that would like to sell you in-app purchases to block this traffic, so the company concerned has a vested interest in making the situation sound scarier than it is.
“This is your data. Why should it even leave your phone? Why should it be collected by someone when you don’t know what they’re going to do with it?” says Patrick Jackson, a former National Security Agency researcher who is chief technology officer for Disconnect […] “I know the value of data, and I don’t want mine in any hands where it doesn’t need to be,” he told me.
There are several answers to that first question.
Most app tracking is legitimateNecessity: some apps need to be sending tracking data in order to function. That Uber or Lyft car can only collect you if it knows where you are, for example.
Immediate user benefit: Many ecommerce and credit card apps use a variety of signals to detect fraudulent transactions, for example, and it’s in all our interests to block misuse of our cards.
Indirect user benefit: The more an app developer can learn about the way that real users interact with their app in the real world, the better they can make the app. Features that are used frequently can be prioritized for enhancement over ones that aren’t, and there are in-app behaviors that can identify problems with the functionality or user interface. App trackers play a key role in software quality.
But there is legitimate cause for concernBut Jackson does make two good points about app trackers. First, transparency.
[His] biggest concern is transparency: If we don’t know where our data is going, how can we ever hope to keep it private?
With literally thousands of trackers transmitting data, it’s simply not practical for anyone to monitor that traffic and figure out which uses are legitimate and which aren’t.
Second, clear consumer protection policies.
To him, any third party that collects and retains our data is suspect unless it also has pro-consumer privacy policies like limiting data retention time and anonymizing data […]
The problem is, the more places personal data flies, the harder it becomes to hold companies accountable for bad behavior — including inevitable breaches.
Jackson may be angling for an Apple acquisition.
Jackson suggests Apple could also add controls into iOS like the ones built into Privacy Pro to give everyone more visibility.
But the point is a fair one. Apple does more than anyone else to protect user privacy, but this is an area where it’s impossible for users to get any kind of steer on what’s really going on under the hood. We either need Apple to do more, or for the law to do so.

How To Wipe Data From Iphone Or Ipad With Broken Screen
If you’ve broken the screen of your Apple iPhone and can’t access the menus, you still have options if you wish to wipe data from the device.
Though the Apple iPhone device is unbeatable in terms of its hardware, software, features, and security, it’s still not unbreakable. If the device falls on the floor on its screen or a sharp object hits the screen with high impact force, the display screen will simply crack. When there’s a crack in the display, the touchscreen won’t function. Ultimately, you won’t be able to control the device using touch gestures.
In such a scenario, if you do need to wipe out the device storage for safety and security, thankfully, there are some methods to erase data on an iPhone without touching the display. Keep reading to learn the tricks and tips to erase data from iPhone with a broken screen.

Reasons to Erase Data on an iPhone/ iPad With a Broken ScreenWhen the iPhone or iPad screen has cracks, there’s no alternative other than sending it to an Apple-authorized service center for display replacement. If you simply pack the iPhone or iPad and leave it at the service center for the repair job, you’re risking your personal and professional data. Because the screen may not work but the device is still in good condition. There are still stored data on the internal storage that anyone can access after the service center repairs the screen.
How to Wipe Data From iPhone With a Broken ScreenThere are a couple of ways to delete data from the internal storage on the iPhone with a non-functional or broken display. Find below the ones that are effortless and easy to perform on your side:
Erase Data on iPhone Using iCloudIf you used your iPhone with an iCloud account, you may be able to sign into your iCloud account from a web browser and wipe the phone with these steps. This method will only work if you activated Find My on your iPhone before the display got broken accidentally. Here’s what you need to do:
Log in to the iCloud Find Devices portal using your Apple ID linked to the iPhone.
You’d see the location of the device on Apple Maps.
You should see a pop-up warning that says “Erase this iPhone?” with two options: Erase and Cancel.
iCloud will ask you to enter the Apple ID password to authenticate the action. Enter the password and proceed.
That’s it! iCloud deletes system data on iPhone in a few minutes. You’ll also see the option to remove the device from your Apple ID once the data wiping is complete.
Delete System Data on iPhone Using the Recovery ModeIf you’ve got a Windows PC or Mac, you can use these devices to erase data on your iPhone. Here’s what you need to do:
iPhone Recovery Mode on Windows PC
Open the iTunes app on your Windows PC.
Connect the iPhone to the PC using a supported USB cable.
Wait for iTunes to recognize the device.
Once you see iTunes synced with the iPhone, do the followings:
For iPhone 8 or later: Quickly press volume up and then volume down and hold the side button (Sleep/Wake button) until you see a lighting cable connecting to a computer on the iPhone screen (recovery mode).
For iPhone 7: Long tap the side button or the top button along with the volume down button until you see the recovery mode screen on the iPhone.
For iPhone 6s or earlier: Long press the side or top button along with the Home button until you see the recovery mode screen.
As you do the above, the iTunes app on the Windows PC will show the “There is a problem…” pop-up on the computer screen.
You’ll need to provide the iCloud password for the Apple ID registered on the target iPhone.
As soon as you supply the correct password, iTunes will start wiping the storage of the device.
iPhone Recovery Mode on Mac
Connect the iPhone to the MacBook or iMac with a compatible USB cable.
Once the iPhone syncs with Mac put the iPhone into recovery mode. The steps are similar to the ones mentioned earlier in the Windows PC section.
As soon as the iPhone goes into recovery mode, you’ll see the “There is a problem with the iPhone” screen on the Mac.
You may need to close and launch the Finder app if you don’t see the above pop-up instantly.
How to Delete Data on iPhone Using Finder or iTunesSuppose, you didn’t activate the Finder app on your iPhone. In this scenario, you no longer need to put the device into recovery mode to erase data on iPhone using iTunes (for Windows PC or macOS Mojave or earlier) and Finder (macOS Catalina or later). Just follow these steps:
Launch the iTunes app if using a Windows PC or the Finder app for MacBook.
Considering the Find My service is offline on the iPhone, connect the device to your Windows PC or Mac.
Use a suitable cable when doing the above.
The Finder or iTunes app will show the iPhone as a synced device.
You’ll see a pop-up that says, “Do you want to back up…“
iTunes or Finder will factory reset the device and erase all internal storage data.
How to Wipe Data From iPad With a Broken ScreenYou can also erase data on an iPad using the same methods as outlined above in the iPhone section in this article. If you’re wiping the iPad data remotely using iCloud or a computer, follow the same steps as mentioned in the following troubleshooting processes above:
Firstly, you may delete iPad data from iCloud using the Find Devices service from Apple.
Alternatively, wipe data from an iPad with a broken screen using iTunes on Windows PC and Finder on macOS.
Furthermore, feel free to connect the iPad with a Windows PC with the latest iTunes app or a MacBook. Then, put the iPad into recovery mode to use iTunes or Finder to erase data on iPad. Here’s how you can go to the recovery screen on an iPad:
iPad model with a Home button: Long press the side or top button along with the Home button until you see the recovery screen as shown in the above image.
iPad model without a Home button: Tap and quickly release the volume up button and then the volume down button. Now immediately press and hold the Touch ID button or the top button until you see the recovery screen on iPad.

Clear Temporary Files & App Caches From The Iphone, Ipad, Ipod Touch With Phoneclean
The app isn’t perfect and it has a few quirk, along with an annoying social sharing splash screen, but it does work to recover some space on just about every iOS device we’ve tried it with. In our tests on an iPad and several iPhones, we averaged between 500MB and 1.2GB of storage being freed up using PhoneClean alone, not bad! So if you’re looking beyond the
Download PhoneClean (free) for OS X or Windows and then launch the app
Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the computer with a USB cable
After the scan you’ll be presented with a total amount of space you can recover by choosing the “Clean Up” option. For example, in this screen shot PhoneClean can free up 772MB by removing 9694 files that it considers as ‘caches’ and ‘offline files’, and 5MB of ‘temporary files’, for a grand total of 777.8MB space to be freed – choose “Clean Up” or uncheck any boxes you don’t want cleared out *
Let PhoneClean clean up the temp data on the iOS device, exit the app when done
Like every other operating system, iOS stores temporary files and app caches locally on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and these files can build up over time. Generally iOS is pretty good at housekeeping, but if you’ve had a device for a long time and haven’t deleted old unused apps, resynced recently, or restored from a backup, you may have more of these temporary files and caches stored on your iOS device than you think. That’s where PhoneClean comes in, it’s a free app that targets some of the “junk” that can accumulate over time, helping to free up storage space on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod chúng tôi app isn’t perfect and it has a few quirk, along with an annoying social sharing splash screen, but it does work to recover some space on just about every iOS device we’ve tried it with. In our tests on an iPad and several iPhones, we averaged between 500MB and 1.2GB of storage being freed up using PhoneClean alone, not bad! So if you’re looking beyond the normal tricks to free up storage on your iOS gear and further reclaim that Other space , grab PhoneClean and you’ll likely be able to recover even more storage capacity on your hardware in just a minute or two.
* Warning: Choosing to “Clean Up” the “Cache and Off-line Files” may have unintended consequences for some media files. For example, it routinely deletes all of the contents of any 3rd party app created Photos album, leaving blank albums (the images should still be stored within Camera Roll, however). If you rely on those app-specific albums to help sort your images you may want to reconsider whether or not to delete these so called ‘cache’ files. In testing, PhoneClean deleted the contents of app specific photo albums for Instagram, Snapseed, VSCO Cam, Afterglow, and GifMill. This undoubtedly frees up space and it should not impact Camera Roll at all, but you may want to copy the pictures to your computer before beginning this process just to be safe.
Mac users may need to use Force Quit to exit out of PhoneClean in OS X, which sometimes froze up when attempting to quit the application. If that happens to you, just hit Command+Option+Escape and choose PhoneClean from the list to forcibly exit out of it. We weren’t able to test the app in Windows to determine if the frozen quit problem is universal, or unique to the Mac platform, but that’s not much of a other all things considered.
Once the app is done running you’re free to unplug the iOS device and be on your way with some more storage capacity than when you started. Though recovering 500MB-1GB may not sound like much, that can be several hundred photos, a couple albums, or some new apps, so even if you wind up on the low end of recovered storage capacity from using PhoneClean it can still be worthwhile to check out.

How To Delete Game Pigeon App On Iphone
Your iPhone may currently host a bunch of mini-games, apps, and other interactive tools thanks to iMessage apps that were released after the iOS 10 update. GamePigeon is one such iMessage app that people used to interact with others on Messages and if you’re someone who uses iMessage a lot, then chances are that you might have installed the GamePigeon at some point or the other.
In this post, we’ll help you figure out how you can hide and completely remove the GamePigeon app on your iPhone in case you no longer wish to use it inside the Messages app.
What is the GamePigeon app?
GamePigeon is an iOS app that lets you play multiple mini-games with others via the Messages app on iPhones. The app was developed in 2023 after the iOS 10 update which allowed support for more apps to be accessed from within the Messages app. As a result, you can download apps specifically for iMessage from the App Store that’s built right into the Messages app.
GamePigeon comes with a slew of mini-games that you can play with anyone you’re conversing with on Messages. These include 8 Ball, Archery, Basketball, Checkers, Chess, Cup Pong, Darts, Dots & Boxes, Mini Golf, Paintball, Shuffleboard, Word Hunt, and more.
How to Remove GamePigeon from Apps section on Messages
If you’re done playing games via GamePigeon on the Messages app and you want to stop yourself from getting distracted with it for a short period, you can just hide the app from within the apps section on Messages. This way, you don’t have to install it the next time you want to play games with your friends and family.
You can simply hide GamePigeon and prevent it from appearing on the Messages app by removing the app from the Apps section inside Messages. To do this, open the Messages app on your iPhone and head over any conversation (it doesn’t matter which thread you select as the removing process has to do with the Apps section that appears below the text box on all of your conversations).
When you open a conversation, you will notice a stream of apps being laid out in a row below the text box at the bottom of the screen. These are all the apps that are available to you from within the Messages app, one of which will be the GamePigeon app.
Slide the Apps row to the left until you reach the More button (the one with the 3-dots icon) on the extreme right.
In the next screen, you will be able to see the GamePigeon app listed under ‘More apps’, if not under ‘Favorites’. To hide the app from showing inside Messages, tap on the ‘Edit’ option at the top left corner.
You can now disable GamePigeon from appearing inside Messages by switching the ‘GamePigeon’ toggle to OFF position.
This will hide GamePigeon from the Messages app and you will no longer be able to see it when interacting with someone.
You can hide any app from Messages using the same steps as mentioned above.
How to Uninstall GamePigeon from Messages
If you want to get rid of GamePigeon once and for all, you can uninstall the app from Messages. To do that, launch Messages and open a conversation with anyone.
Slide left on the apps row that’s available under the text box. At the end of this row, tap on the ‘More’ button on the right.
When the next screen appears, locate the GamePigeon app from the list of apps available for you.
To completely uninstall GamePigeon, swipe left on GamePigeon to bring out the ‘Delete’ option.
GamePigeon will be deleted from your iPhone the moment you swipe it to the left. Similar to this method, you can uninstall other apps from the Messages app by following the steps listed here.
How to Reinstall GamePigeon on your iPhone
Like you would install any other app on iOS, you can reinstall the GamePigeon app from the App Store. But for ease of access, we will be reinstalling the app straight from the Messages app itself.
To do that, open the Messages app and head over to a conversation with any contact.
From the apps row at the bottom (the one below the text box), tap on the App Store icon.
This will open up the App Store for iMessage.
You can install the GamePigeon app by scrolling down to the Top Free section (the app is generally listed at the top of this section) and then tapping on the Download icon (the one with the down arrow pointing away from a cloud). If this is the first time installing the GamePigeon app, you will have to tap on the ‘Get’ option instead.
Alternatively, you can use the search functionality within the App Store and then tap on the Download icon to reinstall the app on your iPhone.
That’s all we have to share with you regarding GamePigeon on iPhones. For more posts about iOS and iPhones, check out our dedicated iOS section here.

Creating An Ml Web App And Deploying It On Aws
This article was published as a part of the Data Science Blogathon.
IntroductionMost data science projects deploy machine learning models as an on-demand prediction service or in batch prediction mode. Some modern applications deploy embedded models in edge and mobile devices. ML web app Model creation is easy but the ML model that you have been working on is of no use until and unless it is used in the real world and ready for production.
We’ll start with Model Deployment and why we should deploy the ML web app model on AWS. The article is chopped into parts this is because I’m trying to explain as simply as I can in order to make model deployment in AWS accessible for as many people as possible. So now let’s go!
What is Model Deployment?Deployment is the method by which you integrate a machine learning model into an existing production environment to make practical business decisions based on data. It is one of the last stages in the machine learning life cycle and can be one of the most cumbersome.
What is AWS?Services Provided by the AWS:-
Now as we have some basic understanding of Model deployment and AWS so now let’s dive into creating a website using ‘Streamlit library in Python.
Why Deploy your App on AWS?Suppose that you have created an ML web app or any other app, that predicts the salary based upon the year of experience. But in order to reach that app to users/world so that users can use that app, you need a server(a server is nothing that provides services). In order to run any program/app, you need an OS. So in the server, an OS is running on which we deploy our code/app so that it can keep on running without having an actual computer/OS.
For getting a server we use multiple cloud services like AWS, GCP, AZURE, and many more. What these services do is that it provides us with a server for it is EC2 (Amazon Elastic Compute). EC2 provides an entirely new PC/server. A PC contains OS, network card, storage, and many types of things. In EC2 we just deploy our code so that our app will be running.
What is Streamlit?Streamlit is a library in python that helps data scientist to deploy their models on websites. In simple terms, it is specifically made for data scientists as It helps them to create web apps for data science and machine learning in a short time.
Why use Streamlit? With streamlit you can easily deploy your models and you don’t need to have knowledge of Flask. With this, you can easily create a website with python in a few lines of code. As well you don’t need to have front-end knowledge like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Now let’s create a website using streamlit.
The model is trained, so I have created the pickle file of the model so that I don’t have to, again and again, train the model. With the pickle file, your trained model is loaded and you will be using that model.
Let’s install streamlit library before creating a website:-
or
conda install -c conda-forge streamlit
Here is the code for the website
import joblib import matplotlib.pyplot as plt import pandas as pd import streamlit as st model = joblib.load('cancer.pkl') def web_app(): st.write(""" # Breast Cancer Predictor Web App ## This app predicts whether cancer is Benign or Malignant. """) st.header("User Details") st.subheader("Kindely Enter The following Details in order to make a prediction") cell_shape = st.number_input("Uniformity of Cell Shape",0,10) clump_thickness = st.number_input("Clump Thickness",0,10) cell_size = st.number_input("Uniformity of Cell Size",0,10) marginal_adheasian = st.number_input("Marginal Adeasion",0,10) single_epithelial_cell_size = st.number_input("Single Epithelial Cell Size",0,10) bare_nuclei = st.number_input("Bare Nuclei",0,10) bland_chromatin = st.number_input("Bland Chromatin",0,10) normal_nucleoli = st.number_input("Normal Nuceloi",0,10) mitosis = st.number_input("Mitosis",0,10) result = model.predict([[cell_shape,clump_thickness,cell_size,marginal_adheasian, single_epithelial_cell_size,bare_nuclei,bland_chromatin, normal_nucleoli,mitosis]])if result == 2:
result = "Benign" else: result = "Malignant" st.text_area(label='Cancer is:- ',value=result , height= 100) if st.button("Press here to make Prediction"): run = web_app()That’s how our website looks:
Down below I will be attaching the link to the GITHUB repo.
As we have checked our website is running perfectly time to deploy it on AWS EC2.
How to Deploy your APP on AWS EC2?Before deploying the website make sure you have an account on AWS. If not, first register and create your account after that follow these steps.
This step is very important because through this step only users from the public world will be able to access it.
Note: Keep this file stored in a folder with this file within your cmd prompt you can also access the server.
Congrats you have created your first EC2 instance.
3. Before entering the EC2 instance, we first need to create a new IAM policy ( IAM stands for Identity Access Management with IAM you can write a policy/role so that one AWS service can access another AWS service). By default, AWS doesn’t allow one AWS service to access another service this is because to avoid any security conflict.
Important Note!! :– We created this new role because in S3 we will be storing our pickle file of the model and in order to get that file inside the EC2 instance we must put the file in S3. S3 stands for Simple Storage Services with these services you can store your data files and later you can use them with various AWS services.
4. Now search for S3 press Alt+F4
8. Now we have configured the changes in AWS EC2. Now it’s time to launch the Instance.
Now install streamlit inside the EC2 using this command:
pip3 install streamlitS
You are currently login as ec2-user. In order to get access to s3, we need to log in as root users. To log in with the root user use this command.
Now go inside your EC2 and follow the below Steps:
2. Go to the EC2 instance then paste the S3 URL inside your EC2
aws s3 cp Your S3 URL/name_of_file name_of_file
aws s3 cp s3://mlwebapp/cancer.pklcCancer.pkl
3. In order to check whether the file is uploaded or not use this command. This command tells the contents inside your directory. This is a Linux command.
ls
4. Now do the same for web_app.py
5. We also need to install joblib as through the library we are able to load the model that we have trained that is chúng tôi file. And also install the sklearn library as this library contains all the models so install this also
pip3 install joblib
pip3 install sklearn
The final and last step is to run the web-app use this command to run the app.
streamlit run web_app.py
Copy any of the URLs, for the public world to connect to this app we give External URL, but if we want to check how the app looks then we use the Network URL i.e the private network. After URL has been copied paste that into your new tab.
Now fill in those details to make a prediction
Congratulations on creating an ML web app and deploying it on AWS. Now anyone in the world can use your app.
Here is the GitHub repo for the same, in here I have uploaded all the files including chúng tôi web_app.py, and the file in which I have trained the model using Logistic Regression. Link to the GitHub repo.

3 Ways To Bring An App Store To Windows 7
The idea of an app store is nothing new – it is a concept that has been available to mobile users for many years, and the same is true for OS X and Linux — but Windows has been a little slow on the uptake. In the time it took for Microsoft to add a store to Windows 8, several other options emerged from third parties. Three of the best are outlined below.
AllMyAppsWith the program installed – and you need to take care at step 3 of the installation… there’s a bundled toolbar and a few other pieces of extra software that you’ll probably want to opt out of – you’re ready to start browsing through what’s available.
Use the categories to the left of the screen to home in on a particular type of app, or make use of the Search bar at the top of the program window to look for something specific. There are also the Staff Picks, Hot Apps and New Apps sections to the left that can be great sources of inspiration.
There’s an added bonus to AllMyApps – it will also let you know when there are updates available for your software. Update checking is built into a lot of apps these days, but not all of them. AllMyApps checks what versions you have installed, sees if there are newer releases and lets you know.
NiniteNinite takes a slightly different approach to things. When you reinstall Windows, you have to set aside a good portion of time for setting up all of the applications you need. Rather than having to visit dozens of websites to download all of the necessary installers, Ninite lets you create a custom installer that takes care of all of your essential apps at once.
The installer can be used on multiple computers and it works in quite an interesting way. Rather than creating a massive installer that includes all of your desired applications, Ninite uses scripts to automatically download and install the very latest version of whatever apps you have specified.
A custom built installer will be automatically downloaded to the folder of your choice. You’ll find that it has quite a lengthy name as the filename is made up of the titles of all of the apps you have chosen.
During the installation, Ninite will automatically download the latest versions of each of the programs you have selected so you can be sure that you are completely up to date.
PokkiRounding off this trio of app stores is Pokki, and this is an app that serves a dual purpose. On one hand, it is a handy app launcher tool that can be used in place of the Start screen of Start menu, but on the other, it is a great way to access a world of new software.
Just as with AllMyApps, it’s possible to browse through categories or perform searches for apps you already know of. Any apps you choose to install will be added to your Pokki menu for easy access – you can use this to complement or replace the Start menu as you see fit.
