What is Tiny11?

Tiny11 is similar to Windows 11 but without the extra baggage that comes with preloaded applications. So, you get a similar experience but there will be no bloatware. Because of this, even the most underpowered computer can run the operating system without having to compromise on speed.

Difference between Tiny11 and Windows 11

Tiny 11 and Windows 11 have a lot of things in common but the major difference is the number of resources and space they both use. On one hand, Windows 11 takes 20GB of space on your disk, on the other, Tiny11 takes 8GB. This pattern continues as Tiny11 can run on a computer with just 2GB of RAM.

They have made a lot of efforts in order to reduce the background processes by not including a lot of redundant apps such as Teams and Edge. However, they kept Microsoft Store so that, if you decide to install those apps, you can do that. Including Windows Store components allows the Operating System to update itself.

Another major difference between them is that the default account for Tiny11 is a Local Account, which is different from Microsoft Account in Windows 11. If you want, you can always sign into your Microsoft Account in Tiny11 as well.

Is Tiny11 Safe?

Tiny11 is not an official version of the Operating System from Microsoft. It has been developed by NTDev. If your computer supports it, your option shot is to install the official version of Windows 11. It comes with a lot of features, some are unnecessary but some are essential.

Not just that, the fact NTDev is just one developer building and supporting an entire operating system, it is very likely that the data will be vulnerable to theft by hackers. How does LastPass store your passwords?

LastPass saves your usernames and passwords in an encrypted database, which is also commonly referred to as a vault. According to the company’s security disclosure, vaults are secured using 256-bit AES encryption. The key used to decrypt a vault is based on the account’s master password.

Even with an extremely powerful computer, a hacker would need several years, bordering on centuries, to crack a single AES-256 key. While that could change in the future, AES encryption is used to secure everything from military secrets to bank accounts.

Needless to say, it’s extremely unlikely that an attacker will brute force their way into your LastPass vault.

Does LastPass have access to your master password?

No, LastPass does not have access to your master password. And since the company doesn’t store your master password, no employee or malicious actor can decrypt the contents of your vault either.

When you sign up for an account, the app generates an encrypted vault locally on your device. The vault is then uploaded to LastPass’ servers in this encrypted state, where it’s stored as a backup. Each time you log into your account on a new device, the app fetches this backup and asks you to input your master password to unlock it.

LastPass does not store a copy of your master password.

It’s extremely important that you use a secure master password. Moreover, you should never use your LastPass master password anywhere else. Doing so dramatically increases the chances of an attacker gaining access to your password from elsewhere. From there, they can simply use it to unlock your LastPass vault.

Can LastPass be hacked?

Apple devices generally come with a standard 1-year warranty which is simply referred to as “AppleCare”. But what is AppleCare?This warranty covers you against manufacturing defects and not against any sort of accidental damage. In other words, if Apple messed up and your device develops a problem, not due to your abuse, then they will fix or replace the device at no cost to you. 

Some specific components are warrantied for longer than a year, depending on the device you have. For example, all MacBooks with the butterfly keyboard switch design have a keyboard warranty of four years from the date of purchase.

Similarly, certain MacBook models that suffer degradation of their anti-reflective screen coating are eligible for display replacements for up to four years from purchase as well.

AppleCare+ is often described as a sort of extended warranty. While it does extend the standard warranty, there’s quite a bit more to AppleCare+ than just a longer AppleCare period.

What Do You Get With AppleCare+?

During that extended time, you’ll get the full cover of the standard warranty. This means any manufacturing defect will be repaired for free. However, you also get two accidental event coverages, but these aren’t entirely free. You’ll pay a fixed amount for certain repairs, but nothing more than that. For example, if you break your iPhone screen the repair cost is $29.99 at the time of writing.

Apart from a longer standard warranty and heavily discounted repair bill, you can also add theft and loss coverage to iPhones by buying the more expensive AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss package. This is basically an insurance add-on that means you pay a fixed deductible amount if you need to claim for a new phone.

Apart from all this hardware coverage, AppleCare+ customers also get priority tech support for the full duration of the plan. Whereas you only get 90 days of complimentary coverage with a new Apple product.

AppleCare vs Insurance

Since AppleCare+ offers coverage for accidental damage, it means you need to compare it to other insurance options. For iPhone users, it’s even more appropriate since you can also pay for additional theft and loss coverage which is not included in standard AppleCare+.

The big difference here is that you pay a one-off fee for the protection plan. With insurance, you’ll pay a monthly coverage fee, which you can stop at any time. So you’ll have to compare the once-off cost against the total cost of insurance over the course of the number of years your AppleCare+ plan would cover the device. Be sure to also compare deductibles and the number of incidents covered.

It’s also worth remembering that the AppleCare+ price also includes other perks, such as warranty extension. So an apple-to-apples cost comparison isn’t really possible.

What Does AppleCare+ Cost?

There is no fixed answer to this question. Apple charges different amounts for its AppleCare+ coverage depending on the device and sometimes even the specific model. You can generally expect a price somewhere around the $200 mark, but you’ll need to confirm this for each individual case.

Do I Have to Buy it Immediately?

One of the biggest problems with AppleCare+ is that you are already spending a heap of money on your new Apple goodie and spending a few hundred bucks on something intangible is often a hard pill to swallow. Luckily, it has never been the case that you have to buy it right away. 

Originally, iPhone users had 60 days from initial purchase to upgrade. Mac users had a full year to take the plunge, so it made sense to wait until the standard warranty is about to run out before buying AppleCare+. In 2023 Apple extended the same 1-year time period to iPhone users as well.

Arguments FOR AppleCare+

So what are some strong reasons to shell out for AppleCare+? Oddly enough, it turns out that the extension of the standard AppleCare warranty may very well be the most valuable aspect of the AppleCare+ offer after all. 

Why? Well, insurance will cover accidental damage, loss, or theft, but it won’t cover device failures that are out of warranty. The sort that Apple will fix for free under warranty. These can be incredibly expensive. For example, if your MacBook’s logic board fails and needs to be replaced, it could cost more than $1,000! Often in these cases, people simply opt to buy a whole new laptop, but if you pay the (relatively) small AppleCare+ fee then that repair will cost you just about nothing.

The chances of that sort of component failure over the course of 2-3 years aren’t trivial. Especially with MacBooks, which run hot and have exhibited a whole host of issues over the years. Yes, if an issue is widespread then Apple will usually cover it regardless, but only AppleCare+ is going to cover your bad luck with getting a lemon off the assembly line.

The other major plus point may also surprise you, but it’s the included technical support. Having a direct line to Apple can be invaluable, especially if your device is essential for work purposes.

Arguments AGAINST AppleCare+

The weakest part of the AppleCare+ offering is the accidental repair coverage. You need to do some serious comparative shopping with third-party insurance companies. 

Phone carriers often also offer in-house insurance for iPhones bought on contract. Your household insurance is likely to make you a better offer for similar coverage as this component of AppleCare+, so be sure to get some quotations before pulling the trigger on the Apple offering.

The Bottom Line

We think that, based on the extended warranty alone, AppleCare+ is worth it. The main reason for this is how tightly Apple controls the aftermarket repair industry of its products and how expensive out-of-warranty repairs can be. So getting 2-3 years of warranty coverage is well worth the asking price. 

In normal use, Apple devices rarely give any trouble, but there are enough horror stories out there that this peace of mind is worth the price.

If you’re happy to roll the dice on Apple’s hardware quality, but don’t trust yourself not to accidentally damage or lose the unit, then it’s more likely you’ll get a better deal from a third-party insurer. Especially one you are already using for home insurance, which will net you better rates, where you aren’t subsidizing the behavior of other, riskier customers.

It also means you aren’t pre-paying for years of coverage you may not use if the phone gets sold or upgraded before the AppleCare+ period runs out.

Pee Makes For Great Fertilizer. But Is It Safe?

The world is in a fertilizer shortage. The dilemma is linked to the war in Ukraine, which affects the export of ingredients like potash and phosphate. The fertilizer price has increased by around 30 percent since the year began, heightening the cost of food. Rising fertilizer costs are also threatening to cause food shortages in developing countries. 

Farmers need to fertilize crops to keep food supplies at adequate levels. New research shows our own waste could be an efficient tool for accomplishing this—specifically human urine.

Researchers from the National Institute of Agricultural Research of Niger recently published research on using urine as a fertilizer for pearl millet crops, a grain commonly grown in the region. Urine contains phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen, which are widely used for growing crops. The scientists treated the urine and tried using it as fertilizer over three years and found it increased yields by roughly 30 percent.

The scientists treated the urine by simply storing it at just above 70 degrees Fahrenheit for two to three months. The pH of the urine increases over time as urea, a nitrogenous compound, hydrolyzes to ammonia, which sanitizes the urine. It can then be used as a fertilizer.

The thought of pee on plants may conjure up images of dead grass where dogs have relieved themselves, but that’s because of the salt content in the urine hitting the living parts of a plant. Treavor Boyer, an associate professor of sustainable engineering at Arizona State University who was not involved in the previously mentioned study, tells Popular Science. It’s about how you use the urine. 

“Salt on leaves and stems does burn the plant. That’s the biggest challenge. The urine has salts in it,” Boyer says. “If you’re applying liquid urine with the salts in it, you want to not necessarily spray it on the plants but apply it to the ground so it gets to the roots. If there’s enough irrigation in place, that will wash away the salts because they’re pretty mobile in the soil. They don’t stick around. And then the nutrients stick around in the soil.”

Nancy Love, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Michigan who was also not involved in the study, tells Popular Science that using urine as a fertilizer appears to be relatively safe when adequately treated. She says any viruses and bacteria in the urine, like E. coli, that might be worrisome aren’t a problem for humans following the treatment process. In her lab, they actually pasteurize the urine using heat to treat the urine instead of simply storing it.

One problem, Love says, is the “ick factor.” People don’t like the idea of eating food that was grown using a urine-based fertilizer. People may not understand that it’s being treated and isn’t going to make them sick. Love says it’s simply a messaging problem, but urine can also be used to fertilize crops that aren’t going to become food for humans as well. 

“It could be used for fertilizing food for animals that then become food or in other places where you’re fertilizing non-food crops,” Love says. 

Historically, urine has been used as a fertilizer for thousands of years in parts of Africa and Asia. Today, urine-as-fertilizer is seeing a bit of a resurgence. Pilot projects are popping up across the US, Europe, and Africa. Many are interested in replacing chemical fertilizers because the production of synthetic nitrogen found in these fertilizers contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, which is not an issue with urine. 

These projects are small, but Boyer says we could increase the scale if we had more waterless urinals that can capture and divert urine without dilution. 

“In the US, we have waterless urinals, but they’re really only used for water conservation. They’re not really used as part of a urine collection system,” Boyer says. “We need to have plumbing fixtures in place that can allow us to collect urine separately from the rest of the wastewater. That urine would have to be stored in a building, likely, and then used on site in a small manner or there needs to be a logistic system in place to gather that urine and use it in a beneficial way that starts to become economical.”

Love says it’s not likely that urine-based fertilizer will take the world by storm any time soon, and it’s also not likely we’ll start replacing every urinal with one that could help accomplish these goals. Still, pee-collecting urinals could become more commonplace in new and remodeled buildings.

What is Midjourney Remaster?

Midjourney Remaster is a new feature that allows users to enhance the quality of their old images, especially those that were created with older versions of Midjourney. It accomplishes this by employing a new algorithm that is more attentive to coherence and detail.

Remaster can take your old images and make them look like new. It can sharpen the details, remove noise, and correct colors. It can even add new details, like hair or fur.

The Remaster function only works when you create images on Midjourney’s older versions. At the time of writing, Midjourney runs on version 4; so if you created images using v3, or older models, you will be able to use the Remaster option to generate an enhanced version of the original image. Being an experimental feature, the remastered image may either look more refined or may entirely change the elements present in the original image.

How to use Remaster on Midjourney

There are two ways you can use the Remaster function inside Midjourney – one is using the Remaster button that will be accessible when you upscale your preferred image and another is by entering certain prompts inside Midjourney. 

Method 1: Using Remaster option

The option to remaster images you generate on Midjourney is only available when you create them using an older version of the AI tool. This is because Remaster runs the work created on the older version and processes it through the algorithms of the current version in order to rework it. So, to access the Remaster option, you can use a prompt that looks like this:

/imagine [art description] --v 3

Notice the “–v 3” prompt we added at the end? This is to make sure Midjourney is using version 3 of its AI model instead of the current version (v4, at the time of writing). You can use older models as well to generate your desired set of images. 

You can then expand the upscaled remastered image and see how it compares to the original version of the image. Here’s an example of the remaster option we used when creating “chromolithography of Aglais lo” (Aglais lo is a rare species of butterfly).

Method 2: Using prompts to remaster manually 

If you don’t wish to use Midjourney’s older version to remaster images, you can directly use the remaster function using additional prompts that you’ll have to enter manually when tying your input prompt. Remastered images can be generated using the “–test –creative” prompt that you can enter alongside the input. For reference, you can follow the syntax below to generate a remastered image of your concept:

/imagine [art description] --test --creative

The upscaled image should now show up on the screen. You can expand it and save it on your device from here. 

If you want Midjourney to rework your idea once again, you can repeat the same prompt as input, and upon each run, you should see different iterations of your concept. You can also add other experimental parameters like “–beta” and “–testp” to get more variations to the image you want to generate.

I cannot access the Remaster option in Midjourney. Why? And how to fix

The Remaster option on Midjourney is an experimental feature, meaning it may not work best every time you use it, or on some occasions, won’t even show up as an option. If you’re unable to access the Remaster button:

Make sure your input prompt includes the parameter “–[version number]”; for eg. “–v 3”. This is important because Midjourney can only remaster those images that were created using its older versions. If you don’t include this parameter at the end of your input prompt, images will be created using Midjourney’s current version and these images cannot be remastered as they have already been processed through the newest version’s algorithms. 

Some images/art simply won’t show the Remaster option. This could be because Midjourney wasn’t able to create or process another iteration of the concept you entered. 

If you entered the “–test –creative” parameters manually, Remaster wouldn’t show up as an option as these parameters themselves are creating remastered images on Midjourney.
