The smart home you want may not be the smart home you need (yet)
The connected home we want is one which anticipated our needs, almost a digital butler. If we’re cold, the thermostat would know. Angry? Maybe the stereo plays the music it knows calms us down. A home security system that recognizes the same face lurking a few times in a week, then notifies you about a potential burglary.
It all sounds like something out of a terrible Michael Bay Summer Sci-Fi movie where people wear Nike shoes we’ve only dreamed of. While we groan at the one-liners, we marvel at the concept of such a home. As the concept becomes reality, missteps have proven it may be the home we want, but not the home we deserve.
Nest’s recent snafu with their Protect smoke alarms that just didn’t work proved that overreaching was perhaps the order of the day. A simple wave to dismiss a fire alarm sounds calming and contextual, but proved potentially disastrous. A bug in the system meant it may not work at all in certain life threatening scenarios.
The Nest thermostat has been met with the same type of furrowed brow response. While not yanked from store shelves like its stablemate (which has yet to return), many question the real aim and use of the expensive device. It might look like something Michael Bay would dream up, but what does it do for $250? Many wonder.
As Honeywell enters the connected home space with the Lyric, their new thermostat promises to bring a bit of civility to home automation. A thermostat, an app, and temperature control. Geofencing brings the contextual awareness, and the device is likely going to be part of Apple’s HomeKit. We get a smart thermostat that actually reacts, an important small step forward.
There are several issues to consider, though. As Nest’s thermostat proved, when you start offering up smarter choices, people question them. Nest can help save money, and thousands of happy users will attest to that. It also over steps bounds we’re not comfortable with. Programming itself, the Nest thermostat absconds with our sense of control; it automates, which is scary to some maybe most). Helpful, sure, but a step too far for many home owners.
Honeywell, leaning on their brand recognition and current spot in most homes, will attempt to bridge a gap. They, among others, want to give us the connected home we need — one we control, but also extend the leash on as desired. The Honeywell thermostat, for instance, can be automated to turn off and on via geofencing. It doesn’t monitor us creepily, it just helps if we want it to. Their algorithm also promises to comfort us in a distinct way, appreciating environmental factors that may not make 68 degrees feel like 68 degrees.
Nest is our future, that much is nearly affirmed. Some day, we’ll have a home that learns in a very unique way, and can offer up intrinsic suggestions based on things we’re not even aware of. The digital butler will tend to our whims, and anticipate our needs appropriately. Until that smart home is ready, we’d be smart to throttle back a touch and accept the baby steps that will get us there.
AI chatbots have rapidly gained popularity in recent years, and their ability to generate text is one of their most important features, providing numerous benefits for businesses and individuals alike.
Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots have the potential to change the way content is created. Text generation allows chatbots to have more natural and engaging conversations with users, and it can also be used to create a variety of other content, such as articles, blog posts, and even creative writing.
In this article, we will explore everything you need to know about AI chatbots and their text generation capabilities. What is an AI chatbot?
An AI chatbot is a computer program that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to simulate conversations with human users. AI chatbots are often used in customer service applications, where they can answer questions, provide support, and resolve issues. They can also be used for marketing and sales, education, and entertainment.
AI chatbots are trained on large datasets of text and code, which allows them to learn how to understand and respond to human language. They use natural language processing (NLP) to understand the meaning of human language, and machine learning to generate responses that are relevant and helpful.
AI chatbots are still under development, but they have the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with computers. They can provide a more personalized and engaging experience for users, and they can help businesses to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Here are some of the benefits of using AI chatbots:
Improved customer service: AI chatbots can provide 24/7 customer service, which can help businesses to improve customer satisfaction.
Reduced costs: AI chatbots can help businesses to reduce costs by automating tasks that would otherwise be done by human employees.
Increased productivity: AI chatbots can help businesses to increase productivity by freeing up human employees to focus on more complex tasks.
Improved data collection: AI chatbots can collect data about customer interactions, which can be used to improve products and services. How do AI chatbots generate text?
There are a few different ways that AI chatbots can generate text. One common approach is to use natural language processing (NLP). NLP is a field of artificial intelligence that deals with the interaction between computers and human (natural) languages. NLP techniques can be used to understand the meaning of human language, and to generate text that is both grammatically correct and relevant to the context.
Another common approach is to use machine learning (ML). Machine learning is a field of artificial intelligence that deals with the development of algorithms that can learn from data. Machine learning techniques can be used to train AI chatbots to generate text that is similar to the text that they have been trained on.
Finally, AI chatbots can also be used to generate creative text. This can be done by using techniques such as natural language generation (NLG) and deep learning. NLG is a field of artificial intelligence that deals with the generation of natural language text. Deep learning is a type of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to learn from data.
AI chatbots that are able to generate creative text can be used for a variety of purposes, such as writing stories, poems, and scripts. They can also be used to generate text that is tailored to a specific audience, such as marketing copy or customer service responses.
As AI technology continues to develop, AI chatbots will become even more sophisticated and capable. They will be able to generate text that is more natural, more creative, and more relevant to the context. This will make them even more useful for a variety of applications. What are the different types of AI chatbots?
There are many different types of AI chatbots, but they can generally be divided into two categories: rule-based chatbots and machine learning chatbots.
Rule-based chatbots are the simplest type of AI chatbot. They are programmed with a set of rules that define how they should respond to certain prompts or questions. For example, a rule-based chatbot might be programmed to answer questions about the weather, provide customer service information, or make appointments.
Machine learning chatbots are more sophisticated than rule-based chatbots. They are trained on large datasets of text and code, which allows them to learn how to understand and respond to human language in a more natural way. Machine learning chatbots can be used for a variety of tasks, such as customer service, sales, and marketing.
Here are the pros and cons of the two main types of AI chatbots:
Simple to develop and maintain
Can be used for a variety of tasks
Can be limited in their ability to understand and respond to complex questions
May not be able to learn and adapt over time
Machine learning chatbots
Can understand and respond to complex questions
Can learn and adapt over time
Can be used for a variety of tasks
More complex to develop and maintain
Can be more expensive
May not be able to handle all types of requests
Ultimately, the best type of AI chatbot for a particular application will depend on the specific needs of the user.
Here are some other types of AI chatbots:
Hybrid chatbots combine the features of rule-based and machine learning chatbots. They are programmed with a set of rules, but they can also learn and adapt over time.
Virtual assistants are AI chatbots that are designed to provide assistance to users. They can be used to answer questions, make appointments, and perform other tasks.
Chatbots for education are used to provide instruction and support to students. They can also be used to assess student learning and provide feedback.
Chatbots for entertainment are used to provide games, quizzes, and other forms of entertainment. They can also be used to connect users with each other.Comparison of Accuracy, Fluency, Creativity, Relevance, and Plagiarism
AI chatbots are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and their ability to generate text is becoming more impressive. However, there are still some key differences between the text generated by AI chatbots and the text generated by humans.
here is a comparison of text generated by AI chatbots:
Accuracy: One of the biggest differences is accuracy. AI chatbots can be very accurate, but they can also make mistakes. It is important to evaluate the accuracy of an AI chatbot before using it for important tasks.
Fluency: Another difference is fluency. AI chatbots should be able to generate text that is fluent and easy to read. If the text is choppy or difficult to understand, it may be a sign that the AI chatbot is not very good. It is important to choose a chatbot that can generate text that is fluent and easy to read.
Creativity: The creativity of text generated by AI chatbots can also vary. Some chatbots are able to generate text that is original and thought-provoking, This can be a great asset for businesses that want to create engaging content for their customers, while others produce text that is repetitive or unoriginal. The creativity of the text will depend on the chatbot’s training data and the complexity of the text.
Relevance: The relevance of text generated by AI chatbots also varies. AI chatbots should be able to generate text that is relevant to the topic at hand. If the text is off-topic or irrelevant, it may be a sign that the AI chatbot is not very good.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a concern with AI chatbots. They can sometimes plagiarize text from other sources. This is a problem because it can lead to legal problems for businesses that use AI chatbots. It is important to use an AI chatbot that has a good plagiarism detection system.
Ultimately, the best AI chatbot for a particular application will depend on the specific needs of the user. If you are looking for an AI chatbot that is accurate, fluent, creative, relevant, and free of plagiarism, then you will need to do some research to find the right one.Factors to consider when choosing an AI chatbot

If you’re already thinking about setting up your smart home, you should familiarize yourself with the smart home systems that are currently available on the market, weigh the pros and cons, and then choose the one that’s right for you.
Apple, Google, and Amazon are the main leaders in the field of smart homes: their voice assistants are not only a convenient way to order connected smart home devices but also help to bring their work to automatics. Of course, Control4 and Xiaomi’s systems are already making a good name for themselves on the market, and while they don’t reach the technological mastodons like Apple or Google, they’re still the best on the market.Buying smart home devices
If you’re tired of dealing with standard household issues, you can install a smart home system that does everything for you. It will take into account all your wishes, provide security, and organize a comfortable temperature in the room with an air conditioner. Do not forget that such technological installations in the smart home needs quality air conditioner servicing. In addition, smart home controls doors, gates, electrical appliances, air conditioning, and ventilation systems.
The possibilities are endless. With its help, you do not have to think about energy accounting – it will all be carried out automatically with the provision of detailed statistics. It is convenient that to save energy, Smart House will turn off devices or transfer them to energy-saving mode before you come. You can save on the purchase and installation of the system by choosing the basic models. Later you can expand the capabilities of the system by adding new components.Apple HomeKit
The HomeKit platform is a software framework that has been built right into Apple devices. If you use this system to control your smart home on your iPhone, you don’t need anything more than a single app with a perfect design and intuitive interface.
Thanks to Apple’s clever ecosystem, you can set up home control through the Home app on iOS, iPadOS, or macOS. The whole thing works perfectly with Siri. So you can change the temperature, adjust the lights, or entire triggering algorithms just on your iPhone.Amazon Alexa
The Amazon Alexa digital assistant appeared on the original Amazon Echo smart speaker in 2014 and has since spread to many speakers and other smart devices. Amazon’s smart home system itself only includes speakers that can control other companies’ smart devices. Connecting a couple or three devices into a system isn’t too difficult, but when it comes to a fully smart home, you’ll need quite a bit of time to set everything up.Control4
You may never have heard of this smart home system. Control4 doesn’t have its voice assistant, which Google, Apple, Amazon, and even Xiaomi do. However, the company’s products are mostly lighting, smart locks, home security systems, garage doors, wireless audio, and more.Reasons to install a Smart Home system
If you’re still in doubt about whether to install this system, consider the benefits it provides:
Remote access to multimedia devices.
Restricted access to electrical outlets, protecting children from trouble.
Round-the-clock monitoring of certain items in the home.
Economic power management reduces electricity and heating costs.
Remote control and monitoring via smartphone, laptop, or tablet.
The Indonesian Navy’s Kapitan Pattimura-class corvette, KRI Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin, tested a 7 barrel Type 730 CIWS last year. The Indonesians liked it enough to purchase two for modernizing their fast attack boats, more order may soon follow. defense.pk
The High Speed Intercept Boat is a very fast (80 knots!) USV still being tested by the PLAN, and already offered for export. Currently capable of being armed with machine guns, its arsenal will likely expand once it enters service.
Chinese Third Offset
This concept from September 2024 shows a network of Chinese fast USVs undertaking various tasks, including escort, interdiction of civilian freighters, patrolling offshore assets and working in a system of systems with other unmanned systems, including drones and submersibles.
The CH-901, a micro-UAV, is already in service with the PLA. While a useful recon tool, it can kamikaze into enemy forces and detonate its warhead for some quick carnage.
The Switchblade is a similar micro UAV to the CH-901, with both reconnaissance and a suicide attack capability. The US Army and Marine Corps have been deployed with 4,000 Switchblades in Afghani operations.
The CH-901 would serve a wide range of uses for both the PLA and foreign customers in Southeast Asia and elsewhere. Instead of having to rely on air support or artillery fire that may be unavailable for whatever reason, small infantry units can mount sneak attacks on vital enemy infrastructure. Also, the CH-901 would be a powerful force multiplier for the average solider in urban combat, and a cheap weapon in counterinsurgency fights.
More Guns for the Garuda
The Indonesian Navy’s Kapitan Pattimura-class corvette, KRI Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin, tested a 7 barrel Type 730 CIWS last year. The Indonesians liked it enough to purchase two for modernizing their fast attack boats, more order may soon follow.
Moving to a more conventional weapons category, Indonesia has agreed to purchase two Type 730 Close In Weapons System to arm its KCR-60M missile boats. The PLAN already uses the Type 730, a seven barrel 30mm Gatling cannon, for close area defense of warships like the Type 052D destroyer, against enemy missiles and small boats. The Indonesia Navy has already been testing the Type 730 CIWS onboard one of its missile boats since last year. Given the need for an effective CIWS to have top notch radars and cameras to target missiles in just a couple seconds, Indonesia must have judged it to be competitive with Western systems that Indonesia already has. Taken in conjunction with previous Indonesian purchases of C-701 antiship missiles, Indonesia looks set to be a repeat customer for Chinese weapons, in spite of occasional maritime disputes.
Special Forces ZH-05
This ZH-05 is a Chinese smart grenade/rifle, with a 20mm grenade launcher that can fired munitions programmed for individual engagements. China’s development and field of smart rifles and micro attack drones are the first wave in Chinese innovations for infantry weapon technology, coming soon to the 21st century battlefield.
China’s willingness to offer weapons already used by or even still in testing with its military is looking a look like a pivot by China to go beyond economic trade and aid when winning friends aboard. And in addition to the high profile categories like long range missiles and submarines, China also has the killer apps for the average grunt on the ground. If western nations like the U.S. won’t export personal infantry digital equipment and robots, China seems well positioned to fill that supply gap.

Timeshift is a relatively new utility for Linux, but it’s something that’s become so essential to desktop users that many distros have added it to their official repositories. This nifty application essentially brings the System Restore utility from Windows to Linux.
Timeshift allows you to create incremental backups that produce exact images of your system at a specific point in time. You can use them to restore your system to the exact state that it was in when the backup was made. Since they’re incremental, they don’t take nearly as much hard drive space to store. In this post we show you how to get started with Timeshift on your own desktop. Why Use Timeshift
First off, Timeshift isn’t primarily meant for servers (though it does have great command line usability). It’s designed with desktops in mind, and it shines there. There are plenty of reasons that you’d want to use Timeshift on a desktop Linux system.
It lets you roll back from bad updates, security issues, and just about anything else that can go wrong with your system, even the mistakes that you make yourself. If you’re worried about security, you might want to check out the best Linux-Libre distributions for improved protection.
Timeshift also allows you to create backups to external and networked hard drives. That means that it can service backups even when the hardware it’s installed on fails.
There’s even an extra feature that makes it better than Windows’ System Restore: Timeshift can be set to run at just about any time interval automatically. You can have your system back itself up every night, week, or month, and never worry that your latest backup is outdated. How to Install Timeshift
Timeshift is now available in most Linux repositories and can be installed directly from your package manager. Here are a few examples of the installation in major Linux distros:Debian/Ubuntu-based Distributions
installtimeshift Arch Linux
Timeshift is available in the Arch User Repository (AUR). You will need an AUR helper to access this special repository. In this example, we used Yay to install Timeshift:yay
installtimeshift Void Linux
sudoxbps-install timeshift Getting Started with the GUI
You’ll need to decide whether you want to run your backups via Rsync or BTRFS. Unless you formatted your hard drive for BTRFS, Rsync is the right choice.
Select where you want to store your backups. Pick the drive where you want your backups to go. A different drive than the one your system is installed on is usually a better option if you have it available.
Timeshift will ask you to set up the timing of your backups. Set something that makes sense for your system. Usually, weekly or nightly backups work best on desktops.
Once all this is set up, Timeshift will let you know that the setup is finished.
If you ever want to go back and change your settings, hit the “Settings” button on the top of the window to do just that.Creating a Backup
Creating a backup of your system is super easy, and you can make one right after you set up Timeshift. This gives your system a starting point.
After the backup process is completed, you’ll be able to see it listed on the main screen. Timeshift lists all of its backups there. How to Restore a Backup
You’ve backed up your system files, and now it’s time to restore them. Timeshift is capable of restoring in a variety of conditions, which we will walk you through:If You Can Reach Your Desktop If You Can’t Boot to Desktop But Still Have Access the Login Screen
In this circumstance, your display manager was able to open meaning that you are technically booted into the system, but your desktop environment failed to load properly. To access Timeshift, we’ll need to access a terminal.
To access the Linux fallback (TTY) terminal prompt, press Ctrl + Alt + F2 or Ctrl + Alt + F3 on your keyboard. Depending on the distro, either of these key combinations should take you to a terminal where you are asked to log in.
Type in your user name and password, and you’re now in your system!
To restore a snapshot using Timeshift here, just type:
You’ll be presented with a list of snapshots and asked to pick one. We selected snapshot 0.
You’ll now be asked to press Enter. In almost all use cases, you could just keep pressing it until it starts the restore process.
Tap your Y key and then press Enter to confirm. Once Timeshift is done restoring your system, you’ll be booted back into your system which now should work perfectly fine.If You Can’t Boot At All
For this process, you’ll need a live USB/DVD of a Linux distro to boot into. You can use a software like balenaEtcher to create one.
Shut down the computer, then boot from the USB stick/DVD you created. If it asks you to whether you want to try or install the distro, pick the “Try” option.
Once you’re in, install Timeshift like you normally would in your system using the steps described earlier in this article.
Open Timeshift, pick the drive your snapshots are stored in, and you should now see the ones you’ve made.Frequently Asked Questions Why doesn’t Timeshift’s window follow my theme?
You may have noticed this especially if you normally use a dark theme: Timeshift’s aesthetics will not follow anything you have on your system. This happens because the application itself runs on a root shell. That’s why it asks you for an administrative password as soon as you open it. The root shell’s theme and your user theme are two completely separate entities managed in different parts of your file system.
To make this as simple as possible without going on a long conversation about root shell modification and its security implications, an application opened with elevated privileges will always use the root shell, which is almost always the vanilla default theme your desktop environment comes with. Can I delete older backups without breaking Timeshift?
Yes, you can delete whatever backups you want in Timeshift in any order you want without issues! Since backups are incremental, it’s normal to assume that removing an image might create a Jenga tower situation and break the sequence. However, Timeshift performs its backups using a little bit of file system magic with hard links that allow it to store multiple instances of a file in different locations. This allows the application to remove an image while preserving overall backup integrity.
