However, after the Creators Update, a lot of users reported critical issues related to Windows Hello, like being unable to access their PC without the PIN or password since Hello features went down – especially Surface users. Luckily, there’s solutions or at least temporary workarounds before the Microsoft addresses this issue.

So, while you’re waiting for the patch, it’s worth browsing through these workarounds we presented below.

Reset facial recognition/fingerprint

The first step you should take is to restart your device. If the problem is persistent, it’s worth trying to reset the Hello configuration and setting it up again.

Follow these instructions to reset your device and set up a new fingerprint/ facial recognition settings:

Open Settings.

Open Accounts.

Choose Sign-in options.

Follow the instructions on the screen and you should be good to go.

Restart your device and look for changes.

If the problem is still there, try the additional steps on our list.

Use the Software Repair Tool

For software-related troubleshooting, Microsoft provided a specific tool and while it’s not a guarantee, it’s certainly worth a shot. Before we start with the procedure, make sure that your laptop or Surface is plugged into an electrical outlet or, if you’re unable to do so, make sure that the battery is at least at the 30%.

After that, follow these instructions to obtain and utilize the Software Repair tool:

Change group policy

As with the Anniversary Update, there’s a chance the Creators Update changed some of the group policies and affected Window Hello. Luckily, there’s a way to restore your policy settings in the Group Policy Editor. To perform this procedure, follow the instructions below:

In the Search bar, type gpedit and open Group Policy Editor.

Open Administrative Templates.

Open Biometrics.

Open Facial Features.

Disable it.

Restart your device.

After that, facial recognition issues should be resolved and your device should recognize you at the log-in screen.

Even though Microsoft provides timely updates and the latest drivers for their devices, there’s a chance some of them became corrupted after the update. As you know, without the proper drivers your device won’t work as intended. You can check and update your drivers by following these instructions:

In the Search bar, type device manager, and open Device Manager.

Navigate to Hello, webcam, and fingerprint driver individually.

Restart your device.

The device should automatically install removed drivers.

Check for any changes in the Hello behavior.

Disable Fast Startup

Open Power Options from the notification area.

Uncheck the box next to Fast Startup.

Confirm changes and restart your device.

However, if the problem is still there, you’ll be forced to reset your computer in order to overcome the update-inflicted issues with Windows Hello.

Reset your PC

This step is your last resort. Indeed, you’ll lose your settings but at least your data will stay preserved. Additionally, you can backup your data prior to this procedure, just in case. This is how to perform Reset process on your personal computer and hopefully retrieve the functionality of your Windows Hello:

Open Settings.

Open Update & Security.

Choose Recovery.

Choose Keep my files.

After the procedure is finished, your Windows Hello features work like before.

The Windows 10 Fall creators update isn’t off to the best start with a large number of users already suffering a near-crippling error, a broken start menu. The issue isn’t entirely new, with Windows 8 and earlier versions of Windows 10 also having similar start menu issues. Hopefully, Microsoft will finally address the issue permanently in future updates. However, until that day comes, you’ll need to manually fix the issue on your own. The good news is after having this problem ourselves, we have compiled a list of solutions that should fix the issue on your system.

Important: Before you go any further, I would suggest restarting your computer before trying the steps below, in my experience this problem seems to randomly occur and randomly go away. Sometimes it can take 3 or so restarts before the problem disappears but it does go away. To restart without access to the start menu, press Ctrl+Alt+Del then shutdown your computer using the option in the far bottom right corner. This isn’t a permanent fix but it will help if you don’t have time to do the below steps. It also seems to take some time for the problem to reoccur.

Windows 10 Creators Update: Features You Probably Didn’t Know Are Coming

The Creators Update for Windows 10 has been in development for a few months now, and during the October press event Microsoft gave us a clearer picture about the features and improvements we’ll see in early Spring 2023.

However, while the company talked about 3D, mixed reality, 4K Windows 10 gaming, and MyPeople bar as the major changes, a fast-pace video introduced during the event highlights even more features coming with the Windows 10 Creators Update.

Action Center improvements

On the Windows 10 Creators Update, Action Center is getting some interesting improvements.

Quick Actions will get more functionalities and things will look a little different. In the video, we can see that Microsoft will drop the square design for most of the buttons.

You’ll be able to control volume right from Quick Actions, and you’ll also get a slider to set brightness to any percentage you want.

Some buttons, like Tablet mode, Airplane mode, Rotation lock, and Quiet hours, will retain the old square design.

Continue where you left off

We have previously heard of Microsoft trying to build some sort of continuity feature similar to Apple’s Continuity that allows devices to work together letting you, for example, start a document on one device and then pick up where you left off on your computer. In the Windows 10 Creators Update, this feature seems that it will become a reality.

According to the demo video, when you start a document on another device or you’re reading an article online, you’ll be able to resume your work by using Action Center to pick up where you left off on your other devices.

Personalization changes and paid themes

Microsoft has been constantly improving the Settings app, and the next update will bring even more ways to customize the operating system.

The Creators Update will include a new way to set color accent on Windows 10 by adding a color picker to let you select any color you want, and not just a set of predefined colors.

Additionally, Microsoft will also be delivering free and paid Windows themes through a new Personalization section in the Windows Store.

Windows Defender

Although the user interface looks the same as in previous versions, Windows 10 includes an entirely new Windows Defender antivirus software. The Creators Update will introduce a brand-new user interface using the same app design language you see today on the Store apps.

Based on the video, the new version of Windows Defender will no longer only be a place for malware protections, but to any security related feature, including firewall and network protection, computer performance and health, and family safety too.

Microsoft Edge new tab management

Then there is a new feature called “Tabs I’ve set aside,” which based on the demo, it seems that it a way to save a group tabs for later viewing.

Groove music maker

Many apps in the Creators Update will get new features, including Groove Music. In the next major update, it seems that you’ll get a tool called “Groove music maker” to mix and create new tracks without the need of extra software.

It would be interesting to see if the new feature also works to create podcasts, which will make it a great alternative to Apple’s GarageBand.

Windows Ink on Word

According to the video, Windows Ink will play a major role in Word, as you will be able to use a pen to do different editing tasks, such as cross a line on text to delete it from the document you’re working on.

It’s worth pointing out that Microsoft has already showed off this feature, but it seems that it didn’t make it to the Anniversary Update.

Maps Collections

Maps will continue to evolve too. The new update will bring a new section called “Collections”. While we’re still don’t know anything about the feature, based on the video, it seems that you’ll be able to save maps along with photos you may have taken on trips.

Along with these new small set of features, Microsoft has also announced a number of other features expected to arrive with Windows 10 version 1703.

Additionally, we have already seen other features in the test preview builds of Windows 10, including a new option to hide the app list from the Start menu, new gestures for precision touchpad, under the hood changes, and a lot more.

According to the company, users enrolled in the Windows Insider Preview program will slowly start seeing some of these features in upcoming preview rollout of the operating system.

How To Fix Mac Software Update Stuck Installing

System software updates on the Mac have a notorious reputation for taking ages to complete. They can also make matters worse by getting stuck during the download or install phases.

If your Mac has trouble completing a system software update successfully, then the list of troubleshooting tips that follow should fix that.

Fix System Software Stuck While Downloading on Mac

Before installing a system software update on the Mac, you must download it using the built-in Software Update tool. If it appears to get stuck at some point, however, here’s what you should do.

Wait It Out Cancel and Retry

If sitting on your hands doesn’t seem to help, try canceling and downloading the system software update from scratch. Hover the cursor over the progress bar and select the x-shaped icon to stop the download. Then, select Upgrade Now/Update Now to re-download it. In most cases, your Mac should end up completing it without issues.

Check System Status Check Your Internet

Don’t rule out any connectivity issues on your end. If you experience slow internet speeds elsewhere (check by downloading or playing something in Safari), do the following:

Reboot your router.

Bring your Mac close to the router.

Disconnect and reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Use a different Wi-Fi connection.

Flush the Mac’s DNS cache.

Change DNS

Using a popular DNS (Domain Name System) service such as Google DNS or OpenDNS can speed things up by helping your Mac locate the best servers to get the updates.

Check Disk Space

Your Mac will refuse to download a system software update if it doesn’t have sufficient disk space. Even if you have the bare minimum of storage needed, it’s always a good idea to have some breathing room.

Try going on a junk file cleaning spree to free up more disk space. You can also look into reducing your Mac’s System and Other storage.

Fix System Software Stuck While Installing on Mac

After downloading a system software update, your Mac will start verifying and installing it. But if it freezes or gets stuck at some stage of the installation process, here’s what you can do to get things back on track again.

Wait it Out

It sounds boring, but most updates take a considerable amount of time to complete. Even if the progress indicator appears to stall, your Mac is likely performing lots of activity in the background. Wait until you’re positive that the system software is stuck before moving on with the rest of the fixes. Ideally, you should give your Mac a couple of hours at the very least.

Restart Mac

If you’ve already waited for a while but still see a stuck system software progress bar or a black screen, you should restart your Mac. To do that, press and hold down the Power button until the device shuts down. Wait for at least 10 seconds and boot it back up.

In most cases, the macOS software update will—hopefully—resume from where you left off. If not, your Mac will boot you into the operating system, and you must start the installation procedure from scratch. However, it’s best to check for disk errors before going for another attempt.

Check for Disk Errors

Disk errors on your Mac are a significant reason for stuck or failed system software updates. You can use Disk Utility in macOS Recovery to check and get rid of them.

Once you enter macOS Recovery, select Disk Utility. Then, pick the last volume of the disk from the sidebar, select the First Aid icon, and select Run.

Continue working your way up and run First Aid on any other volumes or containers to fix the entire disk.

Reset NVRAM

The NVRAM (non-volatile random-access memory) on your Mac stores various settings such as the time zone, startup-disk selection, display resolution, and so on. Resetting it usually helps fix stuck system software updates.

Note: You can only perform an NVRAM reset on Macs with Intel chipsets.

To perform an NVRAM reset, power down the Mac first. Then, hold down the Option, Command, P, and R keys until you hear your Mac’s startup sound twice. On Macs with the Apple T2 Security Chip, you must keep pressing all four keys until you see the Apple logo show up and disappear for the second time.

If the NVRAM reset didn’t fix the issue, you might want to go for an SMC (System Management Controller) reset instead.

Install in Safe Mode

Safe Mode is a stripped-down version of macOS that runs only the bare essentials the Mac needs to keep itself operational. If you continue to have issues with a system software update, you must install it in Safe Mode instead.

Start by shutting down your Mac and wait for 10 seconds. Then, boot it up but press down the Shift key immediately until you see the Apple logo.

If you use an Apple Silicon Mac, hold down the Power button instead until you see the startup options screen. Next, select the startup disk containing macOS and select Continue in Safe Mode while holding down the Shift key.

Your Mac Is Now Up-to-Date

Most often than not, you can deal with stuck system software updates on the Mac by doing nothing but just waiting it out. Hence, it’s a great idea to apply them overnight so that they don’t end up testing your patience.

Battling Ebola: The Ethical Issues Experimental drug use treatment at heart of the debate, says BU’s Annas On August 2, the first of two sickened American health care workers was flown from Africa to a special containment unit at Emory University. Despite the risk of infection, medical personnel continue to travel to West Africa to help bring under control the worst Ebola outbreak on record, which according to the World Health Organization (WHO) has killed more than 1000 as of August 13. WHO plans to spend $100 million to fight the outbreak, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will send 50 more disease control workers. In this weeklong Special Report, BU Today talks to Boston University researchers in several fields about why medical personnel confront the risks; the ethical and political dilemmas presented by the outbreak; how the virus kills; efforts to design effective therapies; and other aspects of this unprecedented outbreak of Ebola.

As West Africa experiences the largest and most severe outbreak of Ebola virus disease in history, the World Health Organization convened a panel of ethics experts to weigh some of the complex questions around access to treatment. The group reached consensus: it is ethical to offer “unproven interventions,” even if effectiveness or complications are unknown.

An experimental serum called ZMapp, never tested on humans, initially was given to two stricken American aid workers and later to a Spanish priest (who died), while hundreds of victims in Africa have gone untreated. The issue of whether medicine untested on humans should be used on people—and if so, who should get it—is just one of many ethical questions stirred by the Ebola crisis.

George Annas, a renowned ethicist and the William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor and chair of the department of health law, bioethics, and human rights at the School of Public Health and a professor at the Schools of Medicine and Law, sees the hype over drug availability as expected, but misplaced. He offers his thoughts on ethical considerations:

BU Today: What do you make of all the focus on who has gotten ZMapp?

Annas: The most important point to make about Ebola drugs is that the Ebola epidemic will not be solved by any existing drug, no matter how effective. The Ebola epidemic is a public health disaster that requires a heavy-duty public health response, complete with the establishment and maintenance of clean, well-supplied, and professionally staffed clinics to care for patients with the disease, and a clear plan to identify and monitor those they have been in close contact with for symptoms of the disease.

Is it acceptable to skip the normal drug-testing pathway in a crisis like this?

Yes. In both law and ethics, exceptions to general rules can be made in emergency situations. In this regard, not only does the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have rules that provide for individual patients to obtain “expanded access” to investigational drugs outside of a clinical trial, the FDA also has an “emergency” procedure which permits physicians to apply to use such drugs for patients with “a serious or immediately life-threatening disease” for which there is no satisfactory alternative. Under these circumstances, the FDA can—and did, in this instance—act quickly. Of course, there are legal and ethical rules that do NOT change in emergencies. The drug must be expected to provide benefit and not cause harm, and the patient must give his or her informed consent, which would include having an appreciation of the risks and how little is known about the drug.

Can the use of experimental drugs on Americans, and not Africans, be justified here?

It could be justified, on the basis that these two patients were the only ones whose physicians requested access to ZMapp, and that their physicians had no obligations to put other patients before their own. Closely related to this would be the very limited supply of the drug—perhaps only enough for these two. This, of course, begs the question: what if there was only enough for one of them, how would you choose—i.e., the sickest, the youngest, the one most likely to benefit, the first patient? We have no generally agreed-upon ethical rules for this, but the fairest way is always to use a lottery method, assuming all in the pool of potential recipients have a reasonable chance to benefit from the drug.

Even in a public health emergency, however, fundamental human rights precepts cannot be violated. For example, we cannot base an allocation decision on race: we must treat all human beings as equal in dignity and not discriminate against individuals on the basis of race, religion, or ethnicity.

Should experimental drugs being developed in the US simply be rolled out in Africa?

The fact that there is no approved treatment for Ebola does not justify trying out whatever we have that might work because there is an epidemic of convenience. On the other hand, if the drugs we are currently working on have been shown to be reasonably safe, and if there is realistic and robust African review and the recipients’ informed, voluntary consent, use of American-developed drugs in Africa could be justified. They could be made available as treatment under some form of expanded access/compassionate use program. Nonetheless, it would be critical to keep detailed records on all people who got the drugs so that we could learn from this experience. We have already failed to adequately respond to the current epidemic; what we are doing now is, in many ways, preparing to handle the next one better.

Does the situation have any parallels in history?

Yes, at the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, for example, ACT-UP demanded access to all sorts of investigational drugs, as well as the use of existing drugs for new purposes. One infamous drug that did not work was the French drug HPA-23, which Rock Hudson flew to Paris to obtain in 1984. Another was Suranim, which had been widely used to treat African sleeping sickness and was touted as “promising” for treating HIV infection. Still other researchers announced that they had cured AIDS using cyclosporine. Perhaps the closest parallel was when a Zairian scientist announced at a press conference that he had a “possible” cure for AIDS. Following that, the number of men in Zaire who believed AIDS could be cured doubled, and educational efforts aimed at prevention were set back.

The same could happen here—unrealistic beliefs in a “cure” for Ebola could set back the absolutely essential public health messages of disease containment and control. I also think that any strategy we in the US adopt that is centered on a new or miracle drug cure for Ebola will do little or nothing for those suffering from the disease in Africa, but could provide us with a comforting illusion that we are doing something to help.

How different would the government response to Ebola be, in your view, if the outbreak was in Europe instead of Africa?

You have to ask? Night and day. The very first patients would have been isolated immediately, their contacts monitored closely, and the disease effectively dealt with before it could spread.
