Working at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Three CAS alums interned at the White House

Jared Kleiman (CAS’12) (from left), Pratik Desai (CAS’12), and Abhishek Seth (CAS’12) have interned at the White House for the last 12 weeks. Photo courtesy of the White House Internship Program

“This experience has reaffirmed my passion for public service and renewed my belief that a few committed individuals have the power to effect change,” says Desai (CAS’12), who worked for the past three months with the White House’s Management and Administration Council. “I think the most difficult part of the whole experience has been remembering that it’s just temporary and that I’ll be leaving.”

Seth (CAS’12) has spent his internship working in the Office of Presidential Correspondence, and Kleiman (CAS’12) landed his internship with the White House’s Domestic Policy Council.

The White House Internship Program gives young people a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience life inside the Executive Office and prepares them for careers in public service. Many departments within the executive branch—from the chief of staff to the National Economic Council—rely on interns to perform tasks that include research, writing background memos, and staffing events. The internships last 12 weeks and are unpaid.

The three BU alums say they participated in the program for different reasons. Kleiman already had a history of internships, having worked as a legislative intern in the House of Commons while studying abroad in London. He later was an intern at the American Embassy in London and with the U.S. Commerce Department and says he is interested in pursuing a career in public and community service. Seth says he was drawn to the White House program because of the opportunity to observe firsthand the inner workings of the executive branch. Desai says he applied to the program because of its track record of cultivating future leaders of government.

His internship proved eye-opening in unexpected ways. “Unlike Hollywood’s version,” he says, “the White House is diverse in every sense of the word.”

Desai, former president of the BU Hindu Students Council and a Scarlet Key Award recipient, says his internship with the Management and Administration Council has taught him to always be prepared for the unexpected. The office works with the White House photo and visitors offices, among others, to ensure that each day runs smoothly.

Each week, the interns came together to attend a speaker series featuring senior staff members (a recent speaker was Vice President Joe Biden) and participate in small group discussions about different policy aspects of the administration. The internship also emphasizes community service; the recent BU alums volunteered at schools and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C.

Perhaps the most glamorous part of the job is the occasional celebrity sighting. Typically, that means lunchtime visits from Bo, the First Dog, but Desai says he’s met the president’s Cabinet secretary, Christopher Lu, his press secretary, Jay Carney, and Tina Tchen, the First Lady’s chief of staff. Seth says he was able to observe the president and First Lady up close during a September 11 memorial service on the South Lawn.

What’s next for the three alums now that their internships are over? Kleiman says he plans to pursue a job in the public sector dealing with policy development and research. Seth hopes to find a job in public relations and will continue to interview celebrities about their charity work for the website Look to the Stars.

Desai is hunting for a public service position as well. But he says that whatever comes next, working at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is something he’ll never forget. “Walking into the White House complex for the first time was both inspiring and daunting, and it’s a feeling that has lasted beyond the first day of the program,” he says. “Every day has been a lesson in humility, and I often have to stop and remind myself how fortunate I am to be here.”

Xbox At E3 2023: Everything Announced At Xbox’s E3 Showcase

Xbox’s E3 2023 presentation finally came to an end, and just as expected it was crammed with new games and titles.

Halo Infinite

Microsoft kicked off its E3 2023 presentation by showcasing one of the most anticipated exclusives, Halo Infinity. Halo Infinite is a new Halo game that appears to include a giant world associated with it, and vehicles like the classic Warthog. While there’s not much gameplay in the trailer, it does also show Master Chief slotting what might be Cortana into the back of his helmet.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Created by the Austrian indie developer Moon Studios, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a beautiful platformer which was revealed in a new trailer at Microsoft’s E3 2023 presentation.

Microsoft had earlier announced Ori and the Will of the Wisps at E3 2023, which is the sequel to 2023’s Ori and the Blind Forest. It’s basically a side-scrolling platformer with puzzle-solving elements. The new trailer features gameplay footage of action in forests, caves, jungles and other environments, and a variety of creatures including a giant arachnid-looking beast of some kind.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is scheduled to be released in 2023 on Windows 10 and Xbox One.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The basic concept of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is to give players control of a “hard-hearted warrior whose mission is to rescue his master, a young lord, and exact revenge on his arch nemesis.” Sekiro will take place in the Sengoku period of Japan and will probably have the same style of intense combat action and difficulty, as other titles from FromSoftware.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is scheduled for release in early 2023 to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.

Fallout 76

While Bethesda’s E3 conference is only a couple of hours away, Bethesda Softworks’ Todd Howard chose to reveal the first trailer of their upcoming title, Fallout 76, at Microsoft’s E3 presentation.

According to Todd Howard, Fallout 76 is going to be “four times bigger” than 2023’s Fallout 4 and will be set in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, 20 years after the devastating nuclear strike that created a post-apocalyptic landscape of the Fallout canon. Additionally, it will be the prequel to all of the series’ current titles. The players will emerge from Vault 76 in the Shenandoah Valley, tasked with rebuilding society a quarter-century after nuclear weapons have devastated the land.

We expect to hear more about Fallout 76 at Bethesda’s E3 2023 showcase. As of now, there is no mention of a release date for the game. However, you will be able to pre-order the game on June 15th from the Xbox Store.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

The next game on this list comes from Dontnod Entertainment, which is set in the universe of Life is Strange. Called The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, the game will be a self-contained story.

What’s more is that the game will be available for absolutely free on the Xbox Store from June 26th.

Crackdown 3

We already knew that Crackdown 3 had been pushed back to a 2023 release date, but we had expected to see some new gameplay footage of the game at this year’s E3. Thankfully, Microsoft did not disappoint and gave us a new look at Microsoft’s flashiest exclusives.

While the first trailer had showcased skyscraper-scale destruction, the new trailer falls closer in line with the supercop gameplay of the original Crackdown. It features Terry Crews’ character, who runs around and shoots things. Oh, and he apparently love to yell, like, a lot!

Nier: Automata

Something that we had been waiting for a long time is finally happening. Nier: Automata, which was a timed exclusive for the PS4 consoles, is making its way over to Xbox.

A special Become As Gods edition will hit the Xbox Store, bundling the base game, the 3C3C1D119440927 expansion, and a slew of in-game skins and accessories, including a Grimoire Weiss-themed robot companion. The Japanese RPG had a mind-bending story, conceived by Nier and Drakengard director Yoko Taro, and a snappy combat system refined by Bayonetta developer PlatinumGames.

Nier: Automata will be available on Xbox Store on June 26th, 2023.

Metro Exodus

Similar to previous Metro games, there’s plenty of mutated creatures being gunned down, but most importantly it looks like the tense, unsettling atmosphere isn’t lost amongst the bombastic gunplay. Apart from that, the ongoing narration highlights that there will be a strong emphasis on storytelling, which is good news for those that have been following Artyom’s journey from the start. The gameplay demo opened with a man giving a speech about survival, before quickly showing off a variety of weapons and customization options.

Metro Exodus is scheduled for release on February 22, 2023 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Kingdom Hearts III

For those of you who are Disney fans, this might be the biggest announcement from Microsoft’s conference for you.

Kingdom Hearts III will release on January 29. 2023 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves has been one of Microsoft’s biggest success stories, especially for the year 2023. At their E3 2023 presentation, Microsoft and Rare debuted a new trailer for Sea of Thieves, showcasing new and upcoming content for the game.

The Cursed Sails DLC is set for July, while Forsaken Shores will follow in September.

Forza Horizon 4

Another year, another E3, and yet another Forza. Microsoft has announced the sequel to 2023’s Forza Horizon 3 – and it is accurately named Forza Horizon 4.

Forza Horizon 4 will see players traveling to Britain and will feature the same arcade style open-world gameplay that Forza Horizon is known for. Apart from being heavily optimized for Xbox One X, with a 60 FPS mode, the major addition to this year’s Forza is dynamic seasons. Seasons will change throughout the gameplay and dramatically affect how the world looks and how cars will drive. Forza Horizon 4 also features a shared open world, where the other cars that players encounter are actually other players, who’ll you’ll be able to race against and with in real time.

We Happy Few

The game takes place in a psychedelic, fictional version of England, where players must survive as society disintegrates around them. It’s a dystopian future that tells an alternate, darker version of World War II — one where the ramifications of the war are still felt all the way in the 1960s. There’s also the influence of drugs, plenty of mime-looking coppers to run away from and a combination of survival, RPG and even roguelike elements to navigate throughout.

We Happy Few is set to be released on August 10, 2023.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

On top of the release of the game’s third map, called Sanhok and schedule to release later this month on PC, a trailer was shown during Microsoft’s E3 2023 press conference that revealed that the map would also be coming to Xbox One later this summer. It also teased the game’s fourth snow themed map later in 2023. Apart from that, the trailer also revealed that War Mode, the popular squad deathmatch mode from the PC version of the game would be heading to the console version in the near future along with other featured game modes.

The new update for PUBG on Xbox One is to be released in Winter 2023.

Tales of Vesperia

Bandai Namco will release Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition on Xbox One this winter, which aims to bring back the classic RPG game to the Xbox One.

The game which launched exclusively on Xbox 360 in the West, all the way back in 2008 is all set to get a remaster, which will include additional content as well as characters. As evident from the trailer, the studio hasn’t changed much in the past decade, but the cutscenes from the still look as beautiful as they did then.

Tales of Vesperia will be coming to Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch this winter.

The Division 2

While we’ve known about this title for a good amount of time, Ubisoft finally showed off Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 for the first time at Xbox’s E3 2023 show. Apart from the trailer, the studio actually showed off some gameplay footage as well.

The Division 2 will be released on March 15, 2023, and will be available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Teased a couple of months ago, Square Enix chose Microsoft’s E3 2023 showcase to show off the complete trailer for their upcoming title, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Session

Montreal-based indie developer Crea-ture Studios has showcased their upcoming skating game, Session, and boy, does it look fantastic.

Session is played with a dual-analog control scheme, à la Electronic Arts’ old Skate series, where each stick controls one foot. When not skating, players will be in Filmer Mode, capturing footage of their tricks for the purposes of editing and sharing it. The camera system for Filmer Mode is inspired by the VHS-quality skate videos of the ’90s, according to the developer. That being said, not much is known about the gameplay at this time.

As of now, there is no word on when Session will be out for interested users. However, it will be a timed exclusive for Xbox One.

Black Desert

Black Desert is an MMORPG based in a fantasy realm ruled by magic and disturbing creatures. The game’s trailer showed off some of the characters that players will be able to play as, and demonstrated some of the environments players will be able to explore.

Microsoft announced that the beta for Black Desert begins in Fall 2023, with players available to register for the beta now.

Devil May Cry 5

One of the biggest anticipations of this year’s E3, Devil May Cry 5 was finally showcased during Microsoft’s presentation.

Devil May Cry 5 is scheduled for release in Spring 2023.

Jump Force

During Microsoft’s E3 press conference, Bandai Namco announced a new 3D fighting game called Jump Force along with a reveal trailer. If you’re a manga or anime fan, this one is probably the best news you’ll hear all year.

Jump Force is set to launch sometime in 2023 for Xbox One, with more details about other consoles to come in the coming months.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is finally here, and thanks to the trailer and gameplay footage shown at Microsoft’s E3 2023 presentation, the game looks darker than ever.

The trailer focuses on how dire the situation of the survivors of the zombies has become, while also showing off the verticality of the gameplay. As explained by the game’s narrative designer Chris Avellone, each players’ decision will impact the world they interact with, in a different way, modifying the storyline accordingly. “It allows you to carve out your own world,” Avellone explained, before stating that things will get even darker during the night.

Apart from Sea of Thieves, Rare’s side-scroller will make its return in 2023, as showcased on Microsoft’s E3 presentation.

While there is no exact date, that game will come out in 2023.

Just Cause 4

Playing as Rico Rodriguez, players will go up against “The Black Hand”, the world’s most powerful private army in the fictional South American country of Solis. The game brings back the much-heralded wingsuit from the previous installment, along with the parachute, helicopters, fighter jets, tanks, boats, and cars that will be available to Rico as he blows his way through the massive, open world.

Just Cause 4 will release on December 4, 2023, on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Gears Pop

One of the most interesting takes at Microsoft’s GoW franchise is Gears Pop, which is coming to your mobile devices pretty soon.

Gears of War Pop was revealed today during Microsoft’s E3 2023 press conference. It will be a mobile game that combines the third-person shooter with Funko Pops. Apart from the short reveal trailer, not much is known about the game. That being said, we expect it to feature a fun twist towards the franchise.

Gears Pop will be available for both Android and iOS devices, sometime in 2023.

Gears 5

If you thought Gears Pop was the only game from the franchise, think again, since the most awaited sequel to the franchise is finally here – Gears 5!

Gears 5 will be available on both the Xbox One and Windows 10 when it does release next year.

Cyberpunk 2077

Right when Phil Spencer was about to leave the stage and bid everyone goodbye, the biggest announcement of the event was here – Cyberpunk 2077!

The trailer opened with a narrator saying poverty and other social issues had made his city the worst place to live, and yet, everyone wants to be there. It then showed a train emerging into a dazzling city of dreams, a metropolis of giant buildings adorned with dazzling screens, where the organic skin is meshed with futuristic tech. The narrator describes himself as a “dreamer” before opening a case with a rifle in it. Viewers were then treated to montage of violence, with punk-stylised figures brutally attacking each other. While the gameplay is still a mystery at this time, the trailer was just the thing people wanted to keep the hype high. For those of you unaware, the game is an RPG that is at least loosely based on Mike Pondsmith’s tabletop game Cyberpunk 2023.

Other Studio Acquisitions

Apart from all the games that Microsoft showcased, they also announced that they had acquired not one, but a total of 5 gaming studios.

The Initiative, Undead Labs, Playground Games, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games; are all now a part of Microsoft Studios. These studios will continue to operate with Microsoft’s resources and are expected to release Xbox exclusives in the coming time.

Working Of Transactions With Examples

Introduction to MongoDB Transactions

MongoDB transactions are provided in version 4.0 of Mongo DB where the transactions are supported even in Multi-document operations to maintain the ACID properties. The transactions are supported even across the sharded clusters and the replications of the documents in the Mongo database. There arise many situations where we need a transaction to maintain the atomicity in the operations where the process consists of multi-collection data or multi-document data which is supported by MongoDB transactions.

Start Your Free Data Science Course

In this article, we will have a look at the necessity of the transactions in MongoDB, the ACID properties of the transactions, and have a look at sample examples to demonstrate the use of Mongo DB transactions in your application.

MongoDB Transactions

There are multiple read and write operations being done from and to the Mongo DB database that needs a behavior where all those set of operations should be completed entirely or none of them should be reflected in the database. This integrity of a set of read and write operations is maintained by using transactions.

ACID properties of transactions

All the transactions in Mongo DB follow the properties of ACID which stand for Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and durability. It is important for exhibiting all these four characteristics inside your transaction for validation. Let us discuss one by one what all these four properties of ACID stand for –

Atomicity – By this property, we mean that all the operations that are present inside the transaction will together be treated as a single unit which means that the failure of even a single operation will lead to a rollback of all the previously executed operations of that transaction and marking the failure of the transaction. Inversely, if all the operations are executed successfully the transaction is also succeeded.

Consistency – By consistency in the database what we mean is that any changes in data will lead to the satisfaction of all the constraints applied on that column of a field in a database. For example, when a unique key is assigned to the document inside a collection then the field is always kept unique while maintaining its consistency.

Isolation is the property that helps in explaining the segregate execution of each transaction when multiple transactions are running in the system simultaneously.

Durability – Durability means the changes in the data being made in the database persist and are stored in the backing store as well which means is there is any kind of system failure arising then the data won’t be affected and will be stored and maintained properly.

Working of Transactions

We have to initiate a session in MongoDB with the help of the driver.

Further, you can make use of this session for executing all the operations that you wanted your transaction to carry out. This operation can be having the involvement of multiple documents, collections, and also across sharded clusters and all of them being ACID compliant.

Limitations of using transactions in MongoDB

There are many limitations while using the transactions in MongoDB which are as listed below –

Read operation cannot be performed on system collections.

Write operation cannot be done on non-existing collections or capped collections.

Indexes and collections cannot be modified or dropped in the transactions.

Example

Consider the following example of a transaction in Mongo DB.

The output of the execution of the above code snippet is as shown in the below image –

Further, we can decide if we want to commit the transaction or abort it by using the following statements –

sampleSession.abortTransaction()

Conclusion

The transactions can be single-document, multi-document, or even involving multiple clusters in it in the case of a distributed system. In Mongo DB the single document transactions are maintained internally. However, in the case of multi-document transactions, there is an extra overhead of managing these transactions. Transactions following the ACID properties make their database consistent, atomic, durable, and isolated. There are multiple methods using which we can initiate the session and abort or commit or transaction in Mongo DB.

Claimed Circuit Board Hints At Nfc

Combing through our archive of posts mentioning “iPhone” and “NFC” is all it takes to realize that talk of Apple allegedly adopting NFC is intensifying, not dying down. In fact, rumors calling for NFC-enabled iPhones date as far back as 2011!

Thus far, however, the iconic smartphone has not picked up support for NFC technology, which is an acronym for Near Field Communication. On the other hand, Apple has numerous NFC-related patents.

Additionally, it doesn’t really hurt to mention that a growing number of high-end Android handsets include NFC as part of their standard feature set. Well, today a claimed image has surfaced apparently picturing an iPhone 6 printed circuit board with what appears to be an embedded NFC chip…

Shared by the French blog chúng tôi [Google translate] which obtained them from one of its Chinese sources, a series of photographs show the purported logic board said to belong to a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model.

In addition to the expected  components such as three times faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi, there seems to be an NFC chip in there. The publication’s well-informed source has stated that the iPhone 6, internally referred to as N61, has unspecified NFC capabilities.

Despite the obvious similarities between the supposed iPhone 6 logic board and the iPhone 5s motherboard, the former’s layout appears slightly redesigned with screw holes matching up perfectly with those spotted in recent leaks of iPhone 6 rear shell parts.

MacRumors editor Eric Slivka took it upon himself to visualize just how this circuit board compares to the existing iPhone 5s part. In addition to a much longer part extending across what would be the top of a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model, the components pictured on the images indicate the part could be genuine (though it’s hard to tell for sure).

Slivka explains:

With the photos showing only the bare printed board and no chips or other components installed, it is difficult to tell much new information from the part, although the locations of some components can be identified based on their similarities to other iPhone logic boards.

NFC is commonly used for contactless transactions and data exchange.

Android, for instance, uses NFC to pair devices securely before establishing an ad-hoc Wi-Fi Direct session between them. This is called Android Beam and select Samsung devices come with the company’ own implementation, dubbed S-Beam, which only works across Galaxy devices.

It’s fairly safe to speculate that Apple doesn’t need NFC for wireless file sharing – AirDrop gets the job done over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Mobile payments? It’s been suggested before that Apple’s own mobile payment solution would pass on NFC due to security concerns – marketing boss Phil Schiller famously said that it wasn’t clear that NFC is the solution to any current problem.

Apple’s many patents may offer some additional clues in the form of NFC-powered digital media gifting between iOS devices, wireless data exchange over NFC, proximity-based data transfers, the connected home (see below) and, yes, the mythical iWallet.

Another possibility: as NFC exchanges are possible between an idle NFC device and an unpowered NFC chip (often called a “tag”), maybe Apple is looking to enhance iBeacons with NFC support?

Let’s also mention that AuthenTec, a smart sensor maker Apple bought to build Touch ID, used to build NFC chips for clients.

Coincidentally or not, VentureBeat (not the most reliable of sources) earlier this week said that the iPhone 6 packs in an NFC chip, wireless charging, a better 4G antenna and “a much bigger screen”, among several other highly-anticipated features.

One thing’s for sure: Fall can’t come soon enough.

How To Spin Weld At Home

Spin welding works like this: one thing rotates at high speed and, using the heat of friction, gets melted to another thing. Like other kinds of welding, it makes a very strong bond that requires no fasteners or adhesives; unlike them, it’s easy to do without special training using relatively safe, cheap equipment. You can start spin-welding in your garage with nothing more exotic than a drill press, a couple of skate bearings, and a few recyclable plastic bottles.

Safety first! Wear safety glasses to keep flying chips out of your eyes, and thin rubber gloves to prevent friction burns on your hands. Never wear heavy gloves around rotating equipment, as they may catch on spinning parts and pull your fingers in with them. If you have long hair, keep it up, back, and out of the way.

Project overview

Time: 45 minutes

Cost: $15 for parts

Difficulty: Easy

Tools needed Materials needed

3 screw-top plastic beverage bottles, recycling code 1 (PET)

4 matching caps

1 or 2 skate bearings, 8 × 22 × 7 mm (608-2RS)

2 hex bolts, 5/16″18 × 1″

2 flat washers, 5/16″

1 threaded rod coupling, 5/16″18

1 hex nut, 5/16″18

1 wooden board

3 small wood screws, #4 × 1/2″

How to spin weld

Decapitate the bottles

The captive rings may be removed or left in place.

Saw through the bottle necks right below the flange. Rub the flanges against coarse sandpaper to smooth off the cuts.

Press in the bearings

You can probably get away with just one bearing.

Fully tighten your drill press chuck and use the closed jaws to press a bearing into one of the bottle tops from the flange side. Press one bearing in as far as it will go, then press a second one in behind it.

Drill the caps

Drill from the flange side.

Assemble the tools

The driver and spinner are identical except for the nut.

Pass the long hex bolt through the hole in one bottle cap from the inside. Add a washer on the other side and screw the threaded coupling on finger-tight. This is the “driver.” Pass the short hex bolt through the other drilled cap and secure with a washer and regular hex nut. This is the “spinner.”

RELATED: We’ve wasted so much plastic, it’s almost impossible to picture—these charts will help

Mount the bearings

No need for pilot holes if you use pine.

Align the parts

Take a moment to be precise.

Thread one of the remaining bottle tops into the driver and the other into the spinner. Chuck the driver into your drill press by the threaded coupling. Set the board on the press table and—without turning anything on—lower the spindle, adjust the board’s position until the bottle tops are exactly aligned, and clamp the board to the table. Raise and lower the spindle a couple times to make sure everything stays lined up.

Make the weld

Let go when it binds.

Set your drill press to 1400 RPM and pulse the power to check for vibration. If it’s running true, turn the power on again, hold the spinner stationary between the thumb and forefinger of your left hand, and operate the press with your right. Touch the parts together as gently as possible. After a few seconds, the plastic will start to soften and the surfaces will bind. When that happens, let go of the spinner and turn off the power. Let the parts spin down together, then raise the spindle. If you did it right, the two parts are now one part and will lift together.

Finish up

Et voilà!

Unthread the spinner from the part, then unthread the part from the driver. Now screw the remaining bottle caps onto each end. Congrats! You’ve just made a cute little crush-proof watertight capsule that’s good for keeping pills, thumb drives, jewelry, and other small precious things safe and dry in your pocket, backpack, or purse. Give it a good rinse with soap and water, let it dry, and you’re good to go.

Going further

Larger-diameter stuff should be welded at lower RPM.

The tools you’ve built will make dozens or even hundreds of these things, and once you’ve got the hang of it, the process is fast, free, and fun. Raw materials are literally everywhere, and your goofs are 100 percent recyclable.

The project as written works for the common PCO1881 threaded cap found on screw-top plastic bottles all over the world, but it’s easily adapted to larger containers if you’re able to accurately locate and drill holes in the center of their caps.

With slightly fancier hardware, it would be easy to make the driver and spinner self-aligning by adding a center guide rod that rides up and down in the bearings throughout the welding operation.

Finally, note that while both parts must be free to spin as the weld cools, only one of them actually has to be round. And though different plastics can’t normally be welded to each other, PET and polycarbonate (which is sold in sheets at most hardware stores) are an exception.
